We have classified the 191 complaints from 2009 Chevrolet Impala about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
The vehicle started to beep and gauges didn't work then work. the gauges went back and forth. the locks locked and unlocked. i started to drive and didn't know how fast i was going because the speedometer didn't work. the engine seemed to work harder to reach highway speed. when i turned the car off, the stabilitrak light came off but check engine light came on. i took the car to the dealer and they cleared the codes for the check engine light but couldn't find what caused the stabilitrak light to come on. they took the electrical harness off and put electrical grease on to keep moisture out. that didn't solve the problem. i still have the stabilitrak light to come on and gauges not to work. now, it happens when i am driving. i feel that someday this will happen and have no control of my vehicle because one time i felt the power steering to go but come back right away. *tr

I cranked my 2009 chevrolet impala leaving a nearby gas station and the message service traction control flashed, then engine power reduced, and the check engine light came on. my car drove sluggish home at a very slow speed. luckily i was only about 5 minutes from home. the next morning no message was displayed and the check engine light went off. i took it to advance auto parts and the code p2127 was displayed twice - throttle pedal position sensor. i see most of these complaints are similar to mine i just happen not to be on the highway. is gm investigating this because this is serious with multiple occurrences? *tr

I originally reported a problem with experiencing what the dealership referred to as a "fishbite". i was advised by the technician and a service bulletin that was presented to me to only use certain brands of fuel and with 2-3 fill-ups the problem should resolve itself. so i have only used the brands of fuel that gm recommended in the bulletin since that date. the problem has not been resolved and i believe this is a predecessor to a different problem as today i too have fallen victim to the wonderfully frightening experience of the dreaded service traction control and reduced engineer power service lights. fortunately for me, my car did not immediately shut off and i was able to return home since i was only a few blocks away. however, given all of the other complaints, i am sure that this is not the last time i will be posting about this. we consumers are very concerned and disappointed, given all of the complaints, of no recall for the electrical problems with these cars. *tr

I was driving on the highway during rush hour traffic going approximately 65 per hour and the service traction control came on and then said that engine power was reduced. it also had the engine light come on and stayed on all the way home. i then got home safely that time and shut off the car about 20 minutes later went out and all lights had gone off and was back to normal. this has happened at least a dozen times since then. then on 6/29/15 this happened again on the highway during rush hour traffic. however this time the car said throttle disabled and the car shut off completely in the middle of the highway and i had to try and get to the side of the road without incident. after about 10 or 15 minutes the car then started back up and the lights went out and i was able to drive again. then later in the day i returned home and tried to leave in my car and it would not start and had no power what so ever. the key also would not come out of the ignition and i just had that recall dealt with on the key. i could have been seriously injured in this last incident. this needs to be recalled and gm needs to pay for what i am out of pocket because i now had to get a rental car to work. i have read pages upon pages of complaints just like mine, which is ridiculous that this issue has not been fixed. does it take someone getting injured or killed for gm to do something?
Climbing up alpowa grade on highway 12 in washington state, the check engine light came on, "engine power is reduced" came on in the odometer window. approximately 35 miles later, beyond dodge junction and before starbuck turnoff, there was another message flashed in the odometer window, "ignition switch disabled. service engine" the engine shut down, and the power steering became super sluggish. the car slowed down, and we were able to get stopped on the side of the road. at this point when we got the car running again, the cruise control would not work. when we reached walla walla, washington, we stopped at o'reilys auto parts, had one of the parts specialists come out and check what the code was on the computer, and found out it was the electronic throttle sensor that is defective. this is a pilot car escort vehicle, making the hazard even more dangerous, because had i been traveling with an oversized load, i could have been hit by the semi pulling the load, or i could have impacted the rear of the load, depending if i were following or leading. also, had that happened while on a job, the load would have had to stop until another pilot car escort vehicle could arrive to continue with the load. this is a dangerous thing to have shut off when driving in areas that are not straight. unable to control steering, brakes less than responsive, and possible hazards of vehicles oncoming or following us could become impact hazards. Was driving down the interstate doing around 65 miles an hour in heavy traffic when the traction control light came on followed by reduced engine power at that point the car shut down . after getting the car pulled over to the side of the road it would not restart for about 5 minutes . this is not the only problem with the electrical , the door locks also seem to be malfunctioning . this is my wifes car and she has said this has happen to her in the past . i have also done some research on this on the web and have seen tons of issues with these problems . what is it goin to take for you to take action on this issue ? *tr

One day before i was to take a vacation from missouri to texas, my check engine light came on. my mechanic told me the code had something to do with a fuel canister, but it shouldn't pose a problem. as i was driving 75 mph on the highway inside the texas state line, after 7 hours of driving, mostly in rain all day, the car started doing a jerking type action & then my traction control light came on, w/a warning msg saying, "service traction control; engine power reduced." going 75 mph i lost all control! no lights, no a/c (which is a separate, loud, clicking issue i could address), no power steering, no power brakes! i had all i could do to just point my car to the side of the road & coast to a stop, in the middle of nowhere w/out a service station in sight! i tried 3x to restart the vehicle to no avail. as i sat there in bewilderment & fright of what just happened, i contemplated what to do. after about 5 minutes, i decided to try & start it 1 more time. this time, it started up. however, the check engine light & the service airbag light (again, another issue i've had with the vehicle since the day i purchased it) were still lit up but the traction control light & the warning messages had gone off. i continued to my destination & the following day (saturday) i took the vehicle to the local gm dealership where they proceeded to do a diagnostic test &, of course, "could not replicate the problem," therefore they could not "find anything wrong." they gladly depleted my vacation expenses of $100 & sent me on my way with a reassurance that "if it happens again while you're here, come back by & we will test it again but we won't charge you for it." how nice of them. :{ gm seems to enjoy doing that. and the nhtsa doesn't seem to want to take the initiative to investigate this prevalent problem w/these cars. if something bad happens, i'll sue the pants off of them. *tr

I could not remove the key from the switch. i contacted my crain chevrolet dealership and the staff attempted to walk me though on how to remove the key from the switch, every attempt did not work. *tr
2009 impala, owned since 2011. started to give us issues a year after purchase where we would get no crank, no start. replaced battery thinking it was the issue. it worked for a couple of days and started over again. no crank, no start. replaced starter with autozone brand and it worked fine a few days. it started to happen again, no crank, no start. replaced starter with oem from gm. it worked for a couple of days and the issue started to happen again. no crank, no start. replaced starter relay, pulled bcm and cleaned all contacts. after cleaning bcm contacts it seemed to of worked but a few weeks later it gave us the same problem. changed ignition switch and continued to have the same no crank, no start issues. we just continued to live with it. the car cranks after 5 or 6 turns of the key and became apart of our daily life. now the big issue is the car turned off on us while driving a few days ago. let it sit 30 mins. and tried to crank but we were getting no crank no start. it eventually cranked and started but i'm worried because i have my grand kids with me often and fear if im on the highway i can get into a serious collision. airbag light has came on since then and can't afford to go to the dealership to get the vehicle diagnosed. i've called gm and since the vehicle is no longer under warranty i would be responsible for everything. have also checked the cables to make sure they are tight and free of corrosion. no oil drips on the starter. we give the car scheduled oil changes and take care of it very well. *tr
Car turned off by its self while driving. luckily had enough momentum to park it. when i stopped i placed the vehicle in park and the key was stuck in the ignition and the shifter would not move. i contact my chevy dealership and asked if this was a safety recall. it was not. i don't know why this is not a recall. having your car stop while driving is incredibly dangerous. considering that my powersteering and brakes went out on me. i came out of this without injury but i what if someone was going around a curve or driving in dangerous conditions. i really hope chevy takes responsibility for this and recall or in my case reimburse owners. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet impala. while traveling approximately 70 mph, the vehicle drastically decelerated without warning. the contact had to merge to the shoulder as the vehicle continued to slow down. the air bag sensor illuminated intermittently. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. the technician reset the sensors, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that the acc sensor, pedal assembly, air bag impact module, and the wiring needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 85,056.
Newly purchased car and child locked himself in car and when i tried to unlock car with key fob doors wouldn't unlock due to an issue that a lot of these cars are having with the actuator. i did a lot of research and found that there are tons of these cars having the same issue. i was able to quickly get the door unlocked with the key but then had to climb over the seat to get the back door unlocked... god forbid i had to rely on my key fob to save my life someday! *js
I was driving my 2009 chevy impala traveling at about 45-50 mph when the "reduce engine power" message came up followed by "check traction control". the car then became sluggish and slowed down to about 15-20 mph. it then shut off without warning and it seems as though the power steering went out. i had my daughter in the car with me and thank god traffic was light because with that happening it was an accident waiting to happen. i am concerned because it seems like this has been a common problem with this car for a few years and there has not been a recall yet. is gm waiting for someone to die. no one seems to be able to pinpoint what the problem is and i don't think it's fair that someone has to pay money to fix what may be a problem. something needs to be done because this is not safe at all. i see a lot of impalas in my town and it's scary to think that at any time this can happen to any one of those cars, mine included, and seriously hurt or kill someone. gm needs to step up and do the responsible thing for the people who invested their money in the gm brand.
In april 2013, the traction control and abs warning light began coming on, in my 2009 impala, when making a left turn. the lights began to come on more frequently and would stay on for longer times. i took the car to the dealer but they could not find anything wrong with the vehicle. the problem has been an ongoing problem since i purchased this vehicle.the lights would stay on for a longer period of time. the problem has not been fixing by the dealer. but they keep charging me $100 per visit. *tr
While driving, service traction control will come on along with the engine light, and they flicker on and off, and cause the car to jerk, the locks to relock, my fuel gauge to go out of place, and sometimes cause the car to turn off. i have taken my car to an actual chevrolet dealership, but they stated that there was nothing wrong with the car because they tried and no problems were diagnosed when they used the scan tool. i don't know what to do. some people say that it may have something to do with my transmission; others say that it is something electrical; while others say that a wire is not connecting or is touching something. one dealer stated that this is happen in all 2007-2012 impala once they hit a certain miles. *tr
Key stuck in ignition and will not release. repaired twice under warranty problem still persists. numerous complaints on internet. gm has internal knowledge of issue with proposed workaround which does not remedy the issue. this is a poor design. free standing cable in shift column moves and becomes pinched or solder comes loose from harness not allow key to be released. vehicle cannot be unattended doors cannot be locked left stranded. vehicle is now at dealer and no longer covered under warranty. terrible design by gm. now forced to pay for a repair which will not hold up and that has already been repaired twice well under warranty. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet impala. the contact stated while driving approximately 65 mph, the check engine and traction warning lights illuminated. also, the low engine power illuminated on the display and the vehicle stalled. the vehicle restarted after the first attempt but the failure recurred multiple times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing and the computer was reset. the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 85,000.
Tried to lock doors with key fob and both rear doors and sometimes passenger side would not lock. attempted to lock from inside vehicle and would still not lock or unlock. *tr
Was driving car and traction control light came on and then check engine light. lost power and brakes. car was able to stop but very hard. glad nobody was in front of me or i would have it them. this is very dangerous and i think there should be a recall on the throttle body and sensors. i did have it fixed but had to take it to several dealers to figure out if it was the accelerator pedal or the throttle body.it was the whole throttle body unit. *tr
The entire dash board (speedometer area) will lose power and all the gauges will go out as if the car was turned off while driving. the radio will still work, i can't use the turn signal when this happens. the car would eventually go back to working on the dashboard for awhile and than repeat itself. the airbag light stay on saying i need to have it service, but when i went to a chevorlet dealer today it didn't read a diagnosis code so they couldn't do anything but reset, but that still didn't work. *tr
Stopped at the top of a snow covered hill. put the transmission in 2nd gear and proceeded down the hill. the vehicle got up to about 15 mph then lost all power; engine quit, no brakes, and the steering wheel locked in place. because the brakes were not working the vehicle gained significant speed going downhill. not being able to steer the vehicle because the steering wheel was locked it went off the road and hit a tree. upon impact the air bags did not deploy. as a result the driver and passenger were seriously injured. *tr the consumer stated after owning the vehicle for a few months, the vehicle began to loose power and several messages appeared on the dashboard. all the power shut off and the consumer had to aaa to have the vehicle towed to where she purchased it. an inspection revealed the throttle body needed to be replaced. updated 07/10/14
I was approaching a intersection when the engine stopped running,i stopped the car,put the car in park, then i tried to start the car it wouldn't do anything, tried to take it out of park and it wouldn't come out park nor would it start and the key wouldn't come out of the ignition switch. this is a safety problem i could have been killed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. *tr
About 2 weeks after replacing a bad battery i noticed that my radio (factory installed) wouldn't turn on. upon further investigation i noticed that my turn signals don't make the ticking noise when they are blinking. upon further investigation i noticed that nothing makes any sounds, lights on warning, low tire pressure, seatbelt not fastened, or anything else that would make a sound. i have no clue but everything else is fine, just no warning tones at all. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet impala. while driving various speeds, the traction control, check engine, and reduce power warning indicators illuminated. in addition, the vehicle stalled. the battery cable needed to be disconnected and reconnected in order for the vehicle to restart. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 70,000.
We purchased a used 2009 chevy impala around february 2014. within a week of driving it we started hearing a loud clicking noise anytime we unlocked the doors or cut on the heat but everything seemed to be working fine so we just dealt with noise. i did look online only to find tons of people with the same problem and i also had multiple friends who said nearly every impala like mine they had been in made that same noise, wow! seriously? but me being the chevy lover, i just saw it as a minor issue maybe missed in production but not really a safety hazard. then a couple of months later that seems to have went away but now it takes about 2 minutes to get the ac to switch from defrost to blowing out of the dash vents. you can still hear it on, but it doesn't actually start blowing for about 2 minutes. still, not a big deal. then i was driving about 15mph(near a school) when a low oil pressure power off engine light came on and went off quickly, i pulled over and cut the car off and back on, no more issues. a few days later my service air bag light started coming on randomly, hmm, so if that light is on will my air bags deploy if needed? not sure... then i get alarms that someone in the passenger seat was not buckled in, but there was no one in the passenger seat. then my car starts cutting off randomly while i'm driving. this morning i backed out of my driveway and it just cut off leaving me in the middle of the street for a few minutes with no way for other cars to get around me.... it would have been terrible if i was pulling out and another car sped around the corner. then there is a recall notice sent to me stating i should remove everything from my key due to ignition failure recall. i saw on cbs you could request a free loaner vehicle until parts came in but the dealer only offered me a rental at 300/wk.wow, thanks gm for caring about our safety. *tr
2000 chevrolet impala. vehicle wouldn't start. took it to service dealer and got it fixed. recall was issued for same reason. *ta the key, and tumbler were replaced, and the key switch was re-programmed. *jb
My drivers side door lock i have to manually lock and unlock with key.. and now passenger side back seat where my 2 yrs old sets., the lock on her side sometimes doesn't lock and she can open the door.. also when it does lock i hafta crawl thru front seat into back and pull the latch up to unlock door... also i have to use a screwdriver to push in some solenoid on my shifter to get my car into gear.. it sucks big time! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that the door actuators failed to operate as intended. when the vehicle was placed into gear, the actuators would lock the doors. also, when the vehicle was stopped and placed in park, the door actuators would unlock the doors. the function no longer operated as intended. the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 125,000.
i went to a store and when i came back out to leave it wouldn't shift out of park. so, to get it out of park i have to reach into the console from the passenger side to push the release button while it's in neutral with the emergency brake on. i have had to do this every time i use the car. it's a safety concern to be laying down in my passenger side--no matter where i'm at, to get my car into gear so i can get to work, etc. i see by other websites that this is a routine problem with this make and model of car. apparently the wires are not made well enough to withstand a few thousand miles of use. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that while driving at 55 mph, the air bag warning light illuminated. in addition, the fuel and the speedometer gauge fluctuated. the message board also displayed low oil and car lowering speed before the vehicle stalled. the contact was able to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to a dealer. the technician diagnosed that the wiring harness needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure recurred on numerous occasions. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was unknown. the vin was unavailable.
While driving i keep getting message stating reduce engine power and the car will start sking and lowering speed. there also is electrical problems all the time with a any reason and then they will start working again. i even got pulled over once over this issue. *tr
I have gotten the blend door / air door actuator changed about 8 or 9 months ago. once the unlock button is pressed the ticking noise begins to go ,off it may go for 3 minutes or longer but it will eventually stop, i thought it was just my car having an issue but when i did some research i discovered that it's alot of impalas on other impalas as well even by word of mouth people hear the noise and some people have stated that their car use to make the same noise. *tr
Today must of been a record for how many times my impala shut itself off! i lost count at about 20 times! im over a hundred miles away from home at my parents house and on my attempt to get home the impala wouldn't let me drive more than 10 minutes. because of this i have now had to call off work and am out of a days wage because i made the mistake of buying this car. i have no money and cant get this fixed for awhile but it seems that i may have to chose between eating this month or fixing this so i guess ill just go hungry. i've been searching this site for other year impalas and it seems that every single year is having this issue, even the 2014 models! this has made me reach the conclusion that the nhtsa doesn't really care about our safety nor do they attempt to solve any problems based on how many times this complaint gets reported and does anything ever happen!? the answer is no! so im basically writing this to inform others who plan on getting an impala, please for the safety of yourself, those around you, and your wallet don't! this is my last gm car i will ever purchase! not that gm really cares because they already got my $60,000 for my last 3 cars so this problem will never get recalled, nor will this website attempt to provide any type of help so save yourself the headache and buy foreign. *tr
My key keep getting stuck in the ignition. after a couple of tries of wiggling it out, it came out. but when i'd gone home for then end of the day my key wouldn't come out at all ! i had to leave my key partially started because the key wouldn't come out. so my bad dies, alarm not working and not to mention i was 4mths pregnant and i kept driving around as i spoke with a gm rep and onstar rep hoping eventually the key will come out but it didn't. *tr
