Problems with 2010 Chevrolet HHR STEERING

I was driving at approx 35 mph and the power steering went out. when i first turn the car on it works but for only about 10-20 seconds then goes off again. it is infuriating that it isn't covered in my warranty. the power steering motor needs to be recalled!!! *tr

For the second time in a week, the vehicle is being serviced because the electronic stability control (esc) activated several times since the last service while traveling straight on dry pavement at speeds between 15 and 30 mph. the vehicle briefly loses steering and pulls to the right while brake is involuntarily activated. after turning the car off and restarting, the car continues normally. fortunately, this has not yet caused an accident. on this occasion, the dealer could not duplicate the problem. the dealer has variously attributed the problem to mismatched tires (replaced with all new), bad hubs (both replaced), bad speed sensors (replaced), bad alignment (fixed) and a wrongly calibrated steering position sensor (re-calibrated). the vehicle has been towed, repaired repeatedly, and the problem is back again. this needs to be elevated to a recall. *js

Driving down interstate at 65mph when the electronic power steering failed without warning. could barely get maneuver car off road onto exit. shut car down to check out, restarted car, everything worked fine and power steering was functioning. turned back around to go home and park car, power steering went out again - this time as i was turning off main road, into my subdivision. almost had car in the ditch as wheel jerked back and power steering went out again. got car to driveway and shut down. restarted car and everything came back online again. drove car down subdivision street to test the problem. could not go more than 5-10 seconds before power steering shut off. very dangerous. i am a 6'2", 225 lb guy and i struggled to get car off the road. when steering, the car is not like an older car without power steering, it turns like you have to fight the wheel. if someone is not aware of the problem and it goes out for the first time in mid-turn, this could definitely cause an accident or kill someone. *tr

While driving on the highway my power steering stopped working i heard a 3 beep warning looked down at the dash and on the display "power steering" was displayed. i called the dealer and i was told that my car was 304 miles over my warranty and that this was not recalled. i went home and started to do research and to my surprise i wasn't the only one with this issue, there are thousands of them online with the same issue. this is very scary for me because i have a 4 year old and a 1 1/2 year old. i don't want this to be a reason for me to have an accident. chevy isn't helping me in anyway, i need help. thank you for your time. *tr

I was turning in the driveway of an apartment building and a bell went off and the steering got really hard to turn. i looked at the dash and saw the power steering light had come on. i got out my book and it says the power steering doesn't need maintenance, but to call the dealer if it happens. well, i restarted the car and the light went out, so i drove to the store a few blocks away and it did it again. luckily i wasn't going fast or in heavy traffic or a really bad accident could have happened and lives could have been lost. i have had ignition problems, i couldn't turn off the vehicle, loss of engine power, rotor replaced. two of the same side broken inside driver door handles and bad gas mileage. the steering has been the most dangerous so far. i read on-line how many people this has happened to and i wonder when they will recall this vehicle. when someone dies? *tr

While driving the car on sat 04/27/2013 at a rate of 45 mph i went to make a turn and the steering froze up making it very difficult to make any kind of turn. i found out then that it had a power steering motor vs a reservoir or anything like that. took it the next day to my mechanic who said fuses checked out good he believes it is the power steering motor. calling chevrolet but getting the run around not good for a part that can cause a major accident. *tr

While driving the car the power steering light comes on, there is a ding, and suddenly the power steering goes out. it first happened 10 days ago and happens at random times everything the car is driven. the power steering will reset if the engine is shut off and restarted, but it will soon go out again within seconds or minutes. this is a very dangerous issue and has caused us near accidents. i see that there are many, many complaints about this issue on hhr's of multiple model years. please address this issue. i have never had power steering on a vehicle just go out before. this is a late model car and an issue of this type and of this frequency definitely points to a defect and not a wear and tear issue. a recall is needed! *tr

My steering wheel locked and could not move my car, and i hit a poll and damaged my right side of my car. *tr

While driving my power steering will stop working. it doesn't happen every time we drive our hhr but at least once or twice a week. it has almost caused 4 accidents that could have been avoided if the power steering would work properly. the power steering alert will show up on our vehicle and we have to shut off the vehicle and restart in order for it to work again. i'm scared to drive this vehicle now after what has happened tonight. *tr

While going around a bend in the road at approx 35/40mph, the power steering in my 2010 chevy hhr went out. there was a ding and then it was very difficult to turn the wheel. i almost hit a jeep that was turning into a subdivision opposite of us because i could not turn the wheel to get in the passing area. this resulted in me going off of the road. i pulled onto the next side road i saw. checked for any issues and restarted. i regained power steering and was able to be on my way. in approx. another mile or so it went out again. it did so intermittently all the way to the dealer. the dealer was of no help basically saying it was an operator error. there was a steering recall that i had taken care of earlier in the year and my mechanic said that it looks like it was replaced with equally defective parts. my mechanic also said that it's not a "wear part" and nothing that i did could have caused it to do that. it is a short on the motor/computer for the power steering. *tr

I have had two issues with this car and it has made me feel unsafe when driving it. the first involves the brakes. when braking after driving at 45mph or more, the steering wheel begins shaking. i was told the brake pads needed to be changed. i did and the problem still continued. last month, the power steering light came on the dashboard. for a couple of days, it went away but soon the steering wheel became too hard to turn. took it to mechanic who changed the power steering module as indicated by the diagnostics test. once the change was done, the service esc light came on and the car has been crazy ever since. i have yet to resolve the issue as nobody knows what is wrong with my car. it has been almost a month already. i am unhappy with this car and would not recommend to anybody. after looking it up, i see that many have this same issue. it is very unsafe since this can happen at any moment while driving! *tr

Bought used 2010 chevy hhr in early february 2013 from a dealer. shortly after the 30 day warranty is over, message lights up on the dash while driving "power steering" then the power steering turns off. i almost crashed as i was turning the first time i experienced this! the power steering is restored when you restart the car. this happens sporadically all the time, at any speed and sometimes several times in just a 10 minute drive. the car is hard to steer when the power steering goes off and is seriously dangerous! *tr

Power steering stops working at all speeds and conditions. dash lights up saying power steering and from that point on until vehicle is restarted there is no power steering. it has happen many times over the last week dealer states that the power steering motor is bad and needs to be replaced at a cost of $265. there are 1000s of complaints of this happening why is nothing being done. canadian hhr has a recall on this but not us hhr. its not the money its the safety of the motoring public that is question here.if not for the fact i have driven a car not equipped with power steering before it could have been really bad when it turned off in a turn. *tr

After making a turn the car beeped, "power steering" showed on the display, and i lost power steering. restarting the car causes power steering to resume functioning but it will cut out again within a minute. *tr

Having alot of noise from front passenger side of car, sounds if something is loose, sound is at low speeds, have heard chevy is having alot of problems with loose steering columns and has posted a tsb 04-03-08-006e, to dealers. i believe so many owners are having the problem with this that chevy should have to recall and fix all cars with problem. *tr

I was pulling out of a parking lot at about 5 mph then i thought my engine stalled because i couldn't turn the wheel. it turns out the engine was on, and power steering appeared on the display. i pulled over to see what was wrong. after turning the car off, then on, the problem went away (i think for only a temporary period). *tr

Vehicle shut down due to power steering. light came on, manual says to turn off engine and restart and it will clear light. however, when reaching speed of 40mph the power steering was again hard to turn. again light came on. vehicle is very hard to turn and get over to side of road especially if you are in the left hand lane and the power steering quits working. upon the second time this happened, almost causing a wreck, it was extremely difficult to steer vehicle and get it off the roadway. took vehicle to dealership and was told the vehicle needs power steering repair. costing $365.00. what a costly repair on a new vehicle. i have had older vehicles that never had the power steering needing repair. also ask that transmission be checked again. vehicle has already had rebuilt transmission installed by gm/ chevrolet. transmission is still slipping when trying to get on freeway. when slowing down from high speed, the transmission will sound like it is slipping into another gear. *tr

While driving the vehicle at various speeds, suddenly the warning chime dings and the message "power steering" flashes on the drivers information console. at that same moment there is a complete loss of the electric power steering making the vehicle difficult to control while driving and impossible to control when parking. it can be reset by stopping the vehicle and restarting the engine. the power steering returns and randomly fails again. it may occur again in a few minutes,miles or wait til your next trip. now intermittently occurring on a daily basis. vehicle is now scheduled to have a chevrolet dealer service this issue. *tr

Slow speed made u turn power steering light came on hard to steer,took to a repair shop near by they came back and told me electric motor needs replaced, vehicle only has 45500 miles on it.. *tr

Electronic power steering assist went out twice over the past weekend. the first time in a parking structure while trying to turn into a tight spot. later will driving at approximately 35 miles per hour. power steering returned to normal function each time after turning off the ignition. nobody was hurt in either event, but with snow coming to the midwest i fear what might have happened on a snow-covered road. i understand this is a common issue and that gm refuses to recognize this issue in the united states for this make and model despite a recall in canada. *tr

Yesterday morning coming home from church our 2010 hhr power steering went out. we were in the middle of a turn and thank god no one was coming in the other lane. in the midst of the turn the warning bell sounded and the display showed "poor steering", no other warnings beforehand. and all power steering was gone. it will comeback for a few seconds if you turn the car off, but goes right back out everytime. i looked on the internet to find i am not alone, 1000?s of people have complained and had this same exact experience. why has this not been recalled, does someone have to die first? my whole family could have been injured (me, my husband, our 17 year old son, and 2 grandbabies!) we took the car in today (10-29-12) to be looked at (that cost $85.00) and they said the power steering motor has to be replaced and that will be another $250.00! *tr

While driving the power steering warning light dinged and i had been making a turn which almost caused a accident not knowing why it went out. i can drive the car for 1 or 2 miles and it keeps going out and i have to restart the car for it to be working again but im told it some type of module that controls it and its not covered by any warranty. i think chevy needs to correct this issue before someone is killed for a steering issue . i see i am not the only one with this issue there have been others. *tr

Same issues as others. key will not turn to off position, will not release from ignition. issue is noted all over the internet. they have acknowledged and issued a service bulletin for 2009 model year, but not for any other model years. why not for other years when obviously it is the same issue with the same part, over several of their models? *tr

While driving at approx 40 mph the power steering went out on the car making it very hard to turn. the warning alarm sounded and the word "power steering" lit up on the dash panel. i pulled the car over to the shoulder and shut it off. the steering worked properly upon restart. this has happened 4 times now. *tr

On two occasions within the 3yr/36,000mile warranty, the esc and antilock temporarily went out with dashboard notification. no esc problems since, so it was not taken to dealership. in the meantime, we have a power steering problem that only occurred once during the warranty period at 35,000 miles. now, at 40,000, the problem has worsened so the power steering fails every trip. the car steers hard when this occurs, obviously. restarting the car resolves the problem for a few minutes. *tr

My power steering just cuts out for no reason,,any time it wants to,,first the chime goes off and than the dash reads ( power steering ) as the steering get hard as a rock to turn ,,,if the vehicle is shut off and restarted the power comes back,,,sometimes for days sometimes for minutes after 2 trips to the dealer to have this fixed...of course the problem will not happen,,,with my luck it only happens at night when the dealer is closed,,and i am not about to leave it outside running all night. this very unsafe because you have no idea when its about to go powerless ,,,on the highway ,,while making a turn in traffic,,,there is no reason in anyone mind that this should be a recall with all the complaints i have read on this site or is it that someone has to die first before anyone gets up and does something about this. *tr

I was coming home and heard a chime, then the power steering light came on and i lost control of the steering. could not turn the wheel, i turned off the car and restarted it, worked for a few minutes, long enough so i could park it. i had the car towed to the dealership the next day, they ran diagnostics and repaired it under warranty. i was thankful for that, but i am concerned about other car owners that do not know about the problem and may be driving on the freeway at a much faster speed when the power steering shuts down. there should be a total recall on this defect! *tr

I was driving home on a secondary road in the foot hills of north carolina while it was raining last night when i was going in a curve and suddenly the power steering cut out and i couldn't turn the vehicle properly. i was traveling approx. 35 mph going into the curve at the time of the problem, due to the sudden problem, i had crossed the center line of the road due to the loss of proper steering and the wet roads, even though i applied the brakes and tried to turn. i heard a chime and saw the trouble indicator showing a problem with the power steering. i fortunately didn't have any on coming traffic or anyone behind me at the time or there could have been a serious injury accident. living in the foot hills of nc with many curves and hills this is a definite safety issue that needs to be corrected with the power steering and hhr vehicles. i was only a mile from home so i drove there and checked to see what was happening. when i restarted the vehicle, the power steering appears to have corrected itself. checking on line for possible reasons for the problem, i am made aware that the hhr's and other vehicles that use the electric power steering have had similar issues (even recalls) for a while now. i find it unacceptable not to include the hhr vehicle since this is a known issue with this model vehicle. as an individual who works in the safety & health field, i strive to keep incidents from occurring that could lead to fatalities, injuries and or property damage and feel that a recall should be done to prevent the potential loss of life from occurring. i am also a certified defensive driver instructor through the nc safety council for cars and transfer trucks. responding to vehicle accidents is part of my job and i must emphasize that the issue of steering control on any vehicle should not be debated or sat upon until lives are lost. *tr

The power steering went out on the car at high or low speeds. you can turn the car off and restart it and the steering comes back, but 15 seconds later it goes out. canada has a recall on the same issue why do not we. also the same part is in the chevy cobalt and that is recalled. *tr

While driving on the interstate at app. 70-75 miles per hour in moderate to heavy traffic the power steering turned off. i was able to pull off onto the shoulder and park. i shut down the engine to check under the hood and under the car but could find nothing obvious. when i restarted the car to drive to the next off-ramp the power steering was back. the problem repeated 3 more times that trip. shutting off the car and restarting always corrects the problem. since than we have had the same problem occur intermittently. no pattern as to when problem occurs. *tr

While driving home the other night, the power steering warning came on and i almost veered off the road into a ditch. this has been happening numerous times since then. i have heard that gm has recalled the same eps in the pontiac g6, why not for the hhr. i have an appointment with my dealer to look into this problem, as it is dangerous on the roads around me (winding and deep ditches). *tr

For no reason the power steering just stopped working ,,making the vehicle impossible to steer,,after you shut the vehicle off and restart it,, the power steering came back on only to stop again when it felt like it ,,at slow speeds as well as high,,if it were snowing or on slippery roads this could of been a major fatality,,,very unsafe if children are in the vehicle

Driving straight at 55 mph. the power steering failed without warning, about 10 seconds into failure the warning indicator came on. dealer checked and advised the code indicated the ps motor overheated. had this happened in a turn or in a panic situation the results could have been deadly. *tr

I was driving my car to the dollar store and was stopped at the red "left turn" arrow, and all of a sudden, the "power steering" sign flashed on my dashboard and my car made a "ding ding" noise. when the light turned green, i turned left and it was extremely hard for me to turn the wheel. it has been happening since. i will turn the car off, and when i turn the car back on, it drives fine for the first few minutes, and then the "power steering" sign came back on. the "power steering" sign has also appeared when i was making a right turn which caused the wheel to lock up in the middle of a turn. the car jerked and i almost crashed into a black sedan. i have a small child who sits in the back seat. i don't have much money, so i can not afford to pay the dealership to get this issue fixed. i took it to a cheap repair shop, and they could not find the issue. i have been looking online to find what ways i can fix this without it costing me a lot of money. have not been able to find a solution, so i am currently driving with no "power steering" which can be very dangerous. in addition to my power steering going out, a couple months ago, i went out to my car to get in my car, and put my key in the ignition and turned the car on. made it to the store, and when i was getting ready to get out of the car, the key would not come out of the ignition. i could not turn it, or anything. the car would not turn off. i had to have aaa disconnect my battery so that my car didn't have to stay running until the dealership opened in the morning. my key had to sit in the ignition over night, someone could have stolen my car. i took it to the dealership the next morning and they had to replace the whole ignition cylinder. *tr

Driving down the highway at rush house, dashboard ding'd and power steering went out completely. i was lucky i was on a straight road but to make turns to get off the highway to safety was extremely difficult. brought it to monroe muffler, couldn't even park my hhr as the steering would not work. very dangerous. monroe muffler advised to bring it to a dealer because apparently these vehicles are all electronic without any fluids.. if your going to make them electronic then please make them be safer. *tr

Arrived home from grocery shopping and i parked my vehicle. i tried to turn the ignition off and the key would not turn. i pulled the power cable off the fuse box under the hood to shut the vehicle off. i live in a townhouse sub-division and did not want to leave the key in the ignition so i removed the ignition cylinder. i called the dealer where i bought the car and they towed it to their shop. the looked at the vehicle and told me it was under oem warranty and they had it towed to a chevrolet dealer to have it fixed. the dealership said they would fix the ignition switch under warranty but the housing would have to be replaced at a cost to me. they replaced the parts and the vehicle would not start. the dealership called the next day and said the ecm (engine control module) would not hold its programming and needed to be replaced at my cost. total repair $1275.00. *tr

Power steering quit working going down the highway, pulled over shut the car off, restarted worked fine for about 2 day, then went out again, now it goes off all the time. this makes it hard to steer,could cause an accident. dealer said have to put on computer and find out what was doing it, all charges to me.i have looked online and was told that same steering is in other chevrolet vehicles that were recalled, not the hhr. *tr

2010 hhr 2lt (manual trans / flex fuel) bought new. problem began summer 2012 @ 10,200 mi. clicking & thud metal noises heard & felt (jerky & resonance of metal striking) coming from low down in both front sections. initially occurred erratically during driving, then consistently. occurred: reversing; and accelerating from 1st gear into 2nd, 3rd, 4th; downshifting from 4th to lower; and during slow stops shifting from 3rd, 2nd, or 1st into neutral. on 9/14/12 at 11,242 mi., dealer found "too much clearance between hub & cv shaft" and an existing service bulletin #09-04--95-001. replaced both wheel drive shaft washers. (note: noise & feeling has erratically returned. however, dealer did not hear it during 3/4/13 test drive at 13,313 miles. but i heard it on the way home a couple of times. and last year, it was erratic before becoming consistent....). *tr

While driving or parked i see the service air bag light come on. it has been going on and off. i haven't read where anyone else has been having this issue yet. but i have had the ignition stuck in the on position. i had to unplug the battery until the next morning. when i could go to the dealership. they fixed the car it was still under warranty at the time of incident. but now i am getting this service air bag light, when it does come on i can't see the mileage nor the temperature gauge. i want to know can this be fixed? *js
