We have classified the 214 complaints from 2010 Chevrolet HHR about STEERING into the following categories.
Our 2010 hhr's power steering went out while my wife was in our neighborhood. she was able to get the car parked on the side of the road but the strength needed to steer the car was greater then she feels she could safely operate the vehicle. if you restart the car the power steering will work again. since that time the power steering will randomly go out at least every other day while driving at highway or in the neighborhood. *tt
I own a 2010 chevrolet hhr. while driving approximately 75 mph in the fast lane on i-75n. the power steering sensor light had illuminated and the power steering suddenly malfunctioned making the steering wheel stiff and almost impossible to move. i was somehow able to safely across 3 lanes to off ramp, luckily immediately to the right was able to glide into a parking lot. parked the vehicle and turned ignition off, checked all fluids under hood, read manual and advised to take keys out and restart. so i restarted the engine and the vehicle operated as normal, the warning signal was gone and wheel was moving. i reported this to gm immediately and have taken vehicle to dealership, where they do not seem to be acting as if this is urgent. they have stalled 2 days now without diagnosing, they will not provide me with a loaner vehicle and therefore i have no choice then to continue to drive the vehicle, knowing the severe threat it has to myself and others on the road. this car is a death trap. i have had numerous issues with this vehicle. i take it in for an issue atleast every other month. also since steering issue have had the "air bag service" light has come on several times. will have dealership check this malfunction out too. i think this means if my steering goes out and i crash, then i will not have an airbag to save me.. i call this car "christine"!! i am very upset that gm and the dealership do not handle this malfunction more seriously. death trap! *tr
Driving down the road, no noise or indication of a problem then power steering indicator came on. no power steering. pulled over, turned off the car and checked under the hood. everything was intact. got back in, steering was working again. maybe 2 minutes down the road and got the power steering warning again. power steering was gone again. 4 year old car should not have this issue-would like to see recall. *tr
The power steering assist went out on my hhr while driving down the road. i have seen hundreds of complaints online about this and feel that it should be a factory recall because it is a safety hazard. gm should appreciate their customers if they wish to keep us. *tr
I was driving down the road when all of a sudden the power steering light came on. i went to pull into a parking lot and the car hit a curb because the power steering shut off. i shut the car off and turned it back on and the power steering worked again. started driving home and with in 5 miles it happened again. drove it direct to the mechanic. they said it was the power steering motor. *tr
I placed a complaint here in february regarding the power steering motor going out. i had this happen to my 2010 chevy hhr and the recall is only for the vehicles made in the us not in mexico like mine was. please have gm look into this. under the nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000, in the letter section 573.6 (c)(5) states exactly what happened to my vehicle. sounds like gm is not owning up to all the vehicles they installed cheap defective parts into. thank you. *tr
Power steering constantly goes off without warning. resets after turning car off but goes out after a few minutes. contacted chevrolet for information on recall since there are hundreds of complaints about it. they said there isn't any available. cobalt had recalls for the same issue and hhr have the same power steering motor. this is very dangerous and gm needs to do something about it before people get hurt. *tr
2010 chevrolet hhr. the engine died while driving. *mw the dealer informed the consumer, the steering column and steering box needed to be replaced. *jb
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that while driving approximately 20 mph, there was a loss of power steering in addition to the illumination of the warning indicator. the vehicle continued in operation with force being applied to the steering wheel. the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 42,000. the vin was unavailable.
Intermittent "service air bags". service light goes on and off sometimes it will change multiple times in just a 20 mile commute. sometimes the service light will not turn on/off for a month. no common factor found. my vin is not yet covered on the hhr recall list. intermittent "power steering" loss - service light turns on and off. it can be hot, cold, dry, raining, driving 30 miles per hour or driving 50 miles per hour. very difficult to control vehicle. my vin is not yet covered on the hhr recall list. a couple of times my car key got stuck in the ignition. once it took five minutes to turn the hhr off. this is covered on the current hhr recall list. there currently is no fix for the problem. it could be two months before it can be repaired. *tr
Power steering unit went out when driving without warning. pulled hhr over to the curb to get the car off the road and damaged tire on curb. car very hard to steer and could not control when pulling vehicle off road. this is a serious safety hazard especially for my wife who does not have the upper arm strength to control the vehicle. same power steering unit in the chevy cruze and pontiac g6 has been recalled. do not understand why the hhr has not been included in the recall. same problem reported on the internet by many other owners. *tr
I,was driving on the fwy!lucky on the exit at ramona blvd from the 605 fwy my car power wheel star to turning hard to turn right and the light on the panel show power steering and lucky me! i,manage to turned very hard but,i did turn the wheel and park my car on shoulder, i,turn off the car and turned on again and the wheel turn soft again!so i,cut drive safe to my home from there!!but i am afraid going to the fwy again!!this happen 01_14_2014 please give to me any feedback from this matter!!scare driver..( this is the third time happen) i am afraid to something happens to me!!! *tr

Steering went out all at once while rounding curves became hard to keep from wrecking or to move to shoulder of road. *tr
As i was driving, the power steering light came on and the power steering went out. the next day, i took it to a repair shop. the problem had disappeared. several weeks later, the problem recurred. i was advised to take it to a gmc dealership. the dealership replaced the electronic motor assist motor (recalled on other vin numbers). and they charged me a hefty fee for the replacement. *tr
I have been having issues with the power steering light coming on the dash as i am driving. it occurs randomly, but after reading several websites i am very concerned that this is a common problem that needs to be addressed and a recall issued. once i turn off the car, and turn it back on the steering wheel softens from its previous rigid state. i never know when it might occur and that is disturbing. through research i have found that this is the same system that is in the chevy cobalt and a recall was issued, so why not the hhr? it appears that a lot of consumers are experiencing this and we need corrective action!!! *tr
Please include repairing this issue in the recall of 2010 hhr vehicles. this is the most recent of multiple incidents where the electronic stability control (esc) activates while traveling straight on dry pavement at speeds between 15 and 30 mph. as a chime sounds, and a message is flashed on the display, the vehicle briefly loses steering and pulls to the right while brake is involuntarily activated. on this occasion, the servicer found the female connectors to the abs speed sensor were not making proper contact. he crimped the new ones tightly when installing the replacement ends. the service advisor admitted that my car is not the only one with this issue, he had seen this problem repeatedly. after turning the car off and restarting, the car continues normally. fortunately, this has not yet caused an accident. the dealer has variously attributed the problem to mismatched tires (replaced with all new), bad hubs (both replaced), bad speed sensors (replaced), bad alignment (fixed) and a wrongly calibrated steering position sensor (re-calibrated). the vehicle has been towed, repaired repeatedly, and the problem is back again. *js
When i drive my chevy hhr is was not sound alert only the power steering light come on and hard to drive almost had on accident, when i try to check the fluid is nothing so i call the local dealer and told me that kind the car no use power steering fluid is electric my concern is post to have same kind of alert before used in my case is happened on a busy street . maybe you guys help to this not happen again how i don't know maybe with the chevrolet company because i heard i not the first person this is happen can be a defect in the car...... thanks for u time i try to write correct. *tr
I was driving the car got up to 25 mph and the steering went out, the car was hard to steer i turnaround for home. i turn the car off took the key out of the ignition put it back in started the car up and it work for one minute and went out again. *tr
On nov. 26 ,2013 i was turning car around in a lot at 1 mph and power steering stopped working and dash light came on power steering. i drove highway for 5 miles to a garage with steering difficulty to get it checked, turned motor off. mechanic said to pull in garage. when i started it up power steering worked and he could not check it since it was working at that time. dealer said if its ps motor including steering column it could cost $1500 or more. i wrote to gmc motors and they phoned and said they never recalled for this " because there were not enough complaints filed.". bob fisher chevrolet where i purchased the auto , rt 61 reading pa assistant manager, [xxx] told me they have had quite a few hhr's in with this problem. gmc only wants to pay only first hour of diagnostic which i am not satisfied with. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that while driving approximately 55 mph, the power steering assist failed and the steering wheel became very tight without warning. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the power steering motor failed. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 57,398.
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that while driving approximately 10 mph, she attempted to make a turn and there was a loss of power steering with the illumination of the warning indicator. the vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road. the engine was turned off and when restarted, the vehicle resumed normally until the failure recurred three times. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the power steering motor was replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 55,227.
It has happened 3 times in the last 2 days. started up the car, and heard a couple beeps and on the information center it said "power steering" and could barely move the steering wheel. i have read that chevy had a recall on the cobalt which uses the same parts as the hhr for steering, why is this not recalled also. it makes no sense. i've also read of people having accidents in hhrs due to this issue. my daughter also was driving the car and the steering just went out on her at about 20 mph. this is very dangerous and seems pretty common on these vehicles. *tr
I was parking my car ,and message came power steering.the car was very hard to handle and could not park the car.i went slowly drifting to a parking space to park.the car was very hard to park .the steering wheel very hard to turn i finally parked the car.i went to a meeting, came back in about two hours, the steering problem was not there.afraid that this would happen again,my husband drove the car home with no problem.this seem to be a problem with this car. i went online to see if other drivers of this car had problems and the answer is yes. if it keeps happening there could be an accident.there should be a recall because there is defect in this car. the car has less than 75,000 on it..please correct before someone is injured. *tr
My son had borrowed the car to go to work. about 1/2 mile form home he called me to tell me the "power steering" message came on the screen and the car felt really stiff to turn. after returning home and taking another vehicle, i took the car out and it failed within 1/2 mile. i took it to a meeting the next day, same result. the steering worked after being parked during the lunch meeting, but failed again within about 1 mile. *tr
Power steering went out and the power steering warning message came on as i made a left turn into heavy traffic. steering got very stiff, but usable. pulled into a parking lot and turned off the car. when i restarted, the power steering was again working and got me 25 miles home. there seems to be a lot of these incidents! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that while driving 15 mph, the power steering assist failed. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection where they stated that the steering wheel motor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 160,000. the vin was unavailable.
While driving at any speed at all there would be a chime and a message on the dash then my power steering would be totally gone, you have about a 4 second warning when this happens. i took the vehicle and had it repaired, it was the power steering motor. i contacted chevrolet directly after having it repaired complaining that this very problem had been recalled in canada but not the us. i was told to keep the repair receipt (which i did) in case there was a later recall. so when the recall happened in the us my vehicle wasn't included. it was clearly a faulty power steering motor yet no recall on my vehicle. i believe there are more out there that gm isn't recalling. if mine done it then there are more out on the road that this has either happened to already or it will. *tr
At approx. 5:30pm , my wife was driving east on us-10 from m-18, to the garfield rd exit at auburn mi when the chimes rang and power steering came on the dic panel. it should be noted that at the time it was raining causing her to be uneasy also note that it did not clear up for approx. 2 hrs. *tr
I was driving at approx 40 mph on a surface street. i heard a click and the power steering message came on the display and then the wheel became extremely hard to turn. i restarted the car and the power steering came back. the power steering messsage continues to come on and the power steering goes out after driving the car less than 5 min each time i have driven it since the initial inicident. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that the steering wheel failed several times and became hard to turn. the information system alerted a power steering failure after the failure had occurred. the contact's personal mechanic replaced the steering wheel sensor however the failure was not corrected. the vin was not available. the failure and current mileage was 58,000.
While stopped at stop light, three chimes and power steering message on wheel. power steering failed. could still operate the car but hard to turn. after turning off engine and turning on again, power steering was re-enabled. have not yet driven the car since the failure so i don't know if it is one time or recurring. however, this exact issue is listed many times on this site. why is nothing being done? *tr
While driving the vehicle will lose power steering. dash indicator says "power steering". i turn the car off and turn back on and it fixes the issue everytime. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that while driving approximately 55 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver. the power steering warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where the technician stated that the power steering motor would have to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 62,000.
10/1/13 as i left work, heading home, the car drove fine for approx. the first five minutes. out of nowhere, the steering became tight, as if it locked up. i could not turn the wheel left or right, the car almost instantly produced more heat, i felt the heat around my feet and it came through the vents. i looked at the dic panel and power steering was flashing. there was a smell as if the car was burning. with force, i was able to maneuver the car to a parking lot to sit. after reading through the user manual, i followed the suggestions from the manual, turned the wheel left and right hoping it would loosen and letting the car sit idle. after about two hours of sitting, my brother drove the car home with no problem. 10/2/13 i took the car, early morning, to be inspected by a local repair company. after running diagnostics on the car, i was told that once diagnostics began immediately power steering control circuit was diagnosed as an issue, the only issue from the diagnostic report, that had malfunctioned. i was also informed that could be the reason why one minute power steering malfunctioned and hours later it worked fine. i was also told that normally something like this is recalled by the automaker. *tr
Power steering intermittently goes out. the car dings 3 times, the console flashes "power steering" and the car becomes very heavy and hard to turn. turning the car off and back on resolves the issue in the short term, but it continues to happen at random. *tr
2010 hhr with 35,000 miles, steering message came on and car wouldn't steer. stopped car and steering came back on for a while then went out again. did this several times over weekend making steering almost impossible. took car to dealer, they replaced the motor stating it was overheating, per computer. cost me 271.00, i am retired and it has put me in a financial squeeze. reason i bought a new car to avoid having problems like this, still making car payments. definitely believe this is a major defect on this car. *tr

During normal driving conditions, the power steering will fail making steering difficult. the problem reset with a key cycle. this intermittent problem has become more frequent during the last month.
On the highway i heard some warning beeps and my info screen said "power steering". my steering became increasingly more difficult to use especially after i got off the highway. after turning off the car and turning the car back on the steering worked again. now it goes out every so often. seems to be a common problem on the hhr, but no recall yet. *tr
I was driving and the power steering light went on, the car started to smell like it was on fire and the power steering was gone. lost control of the vehicle and hit a curb. no injuries and no other damage to vehicle. could have been worse if inexperienced driver or elderly person was behind the wheel. *tr
I was driving on the expressway and my power steering warning came on and vehicle was tighter, after exiting the expressway the vehicle became even harder to steer. i pulled into a has station checked all the fuses all we're fine, restarted the vehicle power steering worked again, after a few miles the power steering light came back on and was difficult to turn. this is very dangerous i had 3 small children in my vehicle and could have been a very bad situation. *tr

The power steering on my 2010 chevy hhr failed as i was driving causing me to hit another driver. chevy has problems with the cobalt and the hhr has many similarities to the cobalt. i think a recall is needed before someone dies. if you look online many hhr owners are having issues! please help us the innocent consumer. *tr
In the last week the power steering has went out 5+ times while driving it on city streets. i will be driving around 40 mph then i will here a dinging sound then look at the dash and it says power steering. after it says power steering there will be a complete loss in power steering assist from the electronic power steering. this is a big safety hazard because it could easily cause a wreck if driving around a curve when it goes out. *tr
I was driving down the road at 60 miles an hour when i heard a ding ding i look at my message board and it said power steering. i had a hard time steering and making turns. i shut my car off and the message went a way and i could steer again. about 5 miles down the road i heard a ding ding and it was my power steering light again i had a hard time steering. luckily i mad it home. i only have 73,000 and no power steering. *tr
Entering a roundabout at only 27mph and power steering quit making it very difficult to control my car. any other situation at higher speed could have been catastrophic . there is a recall for the cobalt model gm but not the hhr model. *tr
