Problems with 2010 Chevrolet HHR STEERING

Experienced loss of power steering assist and a message displayed on the driver information center with a chime sounds. vehicle reverted to manual steering, but greater driver effort was required as i had to turn so i would not hit other vehicles. same issue as in recall bulletin # bulletin 14115. after finding out on google that cars like mine had been recalled i called my chevy dealer and they said that my car did not qualify for free repair, even though of correct make and year. they did not seem to care at all that i was stranded and would not give me an appointment until 3 days later, but told me to call gm as they did not seem to want to deal with me. i called gm and they said the same that the car had not been recalled for some reason, and did not seem to care either. i took my car to a regular garage, driving it in the middle of the night so there would be less traffic and less risk of a crash and they could not repair it as they needed the gm software in order for them to do that, but they did tell me that it was the same issue as the ones that were being recalled. now i will have to miss more work and try to beg to get an appointment and spend a fortune on having something fixed that should have been taken care of as part of the recall. i am a single mother during the week, and have no other choice, i am afraid. i have always driven chevrolet vehicles but that is it for me, i will never buy a gm again. i am very disappointed by their dishonesty, and poor quality of their vehicles.

Driving on freeway power steering went out, dash indicated power steering. extreemly difficult to steer vehicle even at hwy speed. pulled over, shut off engine, restarted vehicle, power steering now working again. finished driving to work, on the way home, it went out again. pulled over , shut off engine, restarted, power steering working again, finished driving home. checked with chevy dealer, they informed me that my vin is not included in the recall.

Steering wheel is locking in place as it should when you park, turn the car off and remove the key, but then the steering remains locked when you insert the key and attempt to restart the car. the wheels are not in a turned position and the steering wheel is in it's appropriate position. it takes wiggling the steering wheel as much as you can until the key catches to get it to start. the key will completely turn to the "on" position, but if that steering wheel is locked there is no connection and the steering must be wiggled until the key engages. also, the steering does not respond as well as it did before the 1st recall for the ignition switch. it feels as if the wheels are not responding appropriately when i am driving. it's harder to maintain control and stay in my lane. i do not know if this has anything to do with the recall on the steering that was previously performed but it is becoming progressively worse.

Started vehicle in parking lot of business after shopping. "power steering" message appeared in driver information center. drove vehicle in parking lot; was no power assist for the steering, manual steering only. checked owner's manual, no information about steering system, other than contact dealer if msg appeared. drove vehicle home with manual steering. did research on net and found that the hhr (& several other gm models) had electric motor assist for steering, and gm had issued a recall in early 2014 for this problem; covered wide variety of models & years, including "some" 2010 hhr's. contacted dealer, said bring the vehicle in. started vehicle, message was gone, power steering worked, but drove the vehicle to dealer anyway. service writer was unaware of any recall for this issue. he checked the vin, said my vehicle was not covered under this recall; said he "could contact gm about any participation in the cost of the repair; may be 10%, may be 100%, but there is no guarantee." hhr remained at dealer overnight;svc writer called next day, said electric motor had definitely failed, it was $346, and gm would not cover any of it. i had done more research online in the meantime, and there were several instances where gm appeared to be very conciliatory to getting this problem resolved. my question is why gm wouldn't cover any of this cost, even if this particular '10 hhr was not included in the '10 hhr's covered under this recall. a second question would be how hard the service writer actually tried to contact someone at gm to get participation in the repair cost. my complaint then would be that gm has apparently denied to cover the cost of an obviously defective product that produces a definite safety hazard, even though it acknowledges the same problem with other similar vehicles; and i would think that gm would be more conciliatory in this matter. *tr

This a recalled 2010 chevrolet hhr. we had the ignition switch recalled, power steering system recalled, and right after the ignition switch was installed, the keys stop working and we had to get towed. now, the airbag light came on. and when we went to re-start the car, nothing. the power went totally out, and the key is still stuck in the ignition switch. about a few weeks ago, we got another recall notice from gm that the transmission shifter may not properly transmit an electrical signal properly that will cause the key to stay in a lock position. we are now stranded. and we have to once again get the car towed to the dealer and pay for a rental. and there are still so many recalled cars at the dealer that they are so behind. all of this is going on while gm is showing off their new cars at the detroit auto show. cars that will probably soon be on another recall list. enough is enough!! all chevy hhr owners who have had more the one recall on it, should be allowed to turn the car in without penalty or charge. all car notes should be cancelled!-thank you. and "be blessed"-[xxx] in c/o [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

My power steering light came across the dash and i could not steer my car to good. it will not go out now and i have 2 kids that we almost got into an accident when this happened. i have only had my car a year and a half and i think someone should be fixing it for me at no cost. *tr

Power steering stops operating at any speed, but happened this time at 50mph in a curve. caught me by surprise and was difficult to maintain the lane as a result, but i managed. this is the same symptom as found in cobalt's and hhr's in canade. same part numbers involved, etc... for some reason these are not recalled on us hhr's. please help! *tr

Driving on interstate and the steering warning light came on, the steering became almost impossible to manage. pulled off at next exit thinking i would check the fluid level. couldn't locate the fluid reservoir and read the manual to find out that the power steering is electrically controlled. came close to losing control of the vehicle at high speeds. *tr

While driving through a school zone at 25 mph, my power steering failed and reverted to manual steering. my girlfriend is unable to steer the vehicle during the manual steering mode. i researched the vin recall database and found that there was recall for "some" 2010 non turbo models. mine is a non turbo model. i had two recalls on my vehicle which i had repaired on 12/31/2014. the following quote is from the gm recall web page: ?with these safety recalls and lifetime warranties, we are going after every car that might have this problem, and we are going to make it right,? said [xxx] , vice president, gm global vehicle safety. ?we have recalled some of these vehicles before for the same issue and offered extended warranties on others, but we did not do enough.? this is a severe safety issue that must be addressed. *tr

My power steering is going in and out in my car which can be quite dangerous. gm says there is a recall on it but its in customer phase mailing so they won't fix it. *tr

Was driving down highway and suddenly the power assist steering quit working and could not steer vehicle. sometime power assist works and sometimes it doesn't.. at times it locks up. had to have a mechanic get vehicle to chevrolet garage because i was not strong enough to steer it. *tr

I was driving to an appointment, when my power steering flashed on the dash screen and my steering wheel went from fluid to stiff. i pulled over to the side of the road as soon as it happened and turned off the car. when i turned it back on, the steering was fluid again, but the air bag light had came on as well as the abs and traction. the steering wheel was fluid only for a few minuets, and then after making a few turns, i lost the steering once again. i have learned of a recall on the hhr's power steering and starter. i will go to the dealer and ask them what they can do. i am filing this so it is noted in the records of the happenings. *tr

Sudden lose of power steering with power steering light coming on and engine stopping. luckily we were exiting a shopping area and was on a downhill grade and was able to coast to the side without incident (except the irritated traffic behind me). we were able to restart the car with no difficulty but the power steering light immediately came on and indeed there was no power steering. went to a local auto parts place who said the fuse looked good, but we changed it anyway, hoping this would fix the problem, but no such luck. i live in the city and work in a metropolitan area, this is my only mode of transportation and at this point my biceps and shoulders are getting pretty sore. very difficult to pull in and out of my driveway. looking back, i see how this could have been disasterous. what if my 16 year old had been behind the wheel? hope it doesn't take long to get repaired. updated 05/7/2015*js

On my lunch break for work my powersteering once again has given out on me i have contacted chevrolet numerous time trying to get them to understand how unsafe it is to keep driving the car when there is already a known issue with powersteering of my car but chevrolet has refused to provide a rental car to me due to me not feeling safe to drive the car they are not able to give me a time when the parts should be in. *tr

I was driving to work this morning i go to make a turn and the steering wheel just looked.the power steering alert came up, it would not unlock until i turned car off. it was very very scary the steering wheel became very very heavy i had to struggle to turn, i was praying and sweating profusely, i really felt my life was in danger. *tr

No accident has occurred; i would like to know why it takes so long to remedy the recall(s) on my vehicle; the first notice was received dated april 2014 from gm regarding the ignition switch. the next recall letter was received on may 11, 2014 and i immediately called my local gm (cecil clarke chevrolet) in leesburg, florida to be put on the 'list' for the required parts/replacements. on june 17th, i called cecil clark again and was advised that although they were receiving 4 - 5 replacement kits a day, mine had not come in yet. now i have a safety recall for june reference the eps and that parts are not currently available. i have done what i need to do, i drive only when i have to now, and although i follow the safety rules reference removing all items from the ignition key, i do not feel safe while driving anymore. please can you find out why it takes so long to get parts for a very safety related issue. i thank you in advance. *js

i was backing up out of a parking stall the power steering suddenly stopped working , that is on recall along with the ignition switch we called may 20 2014 no parts for the ignition switch still no parts for that now another recall this time electrical power steering ..... sunday july6 2014 at 11:30 am power steering suddenly went out call gm road side assistance got a tow to h&h chevy omaha ne . then first thing monday morning went in and got a loaner car. the service guy stated that gm doesn't no how to fix the power steering problem nor do they have anyone to fix it and no part to fix it with so it could be a month or longer we have to drive a chevy cruze which for someone with a very bad back and arthritis in knees and back bad car not comfortable. i think gm needs to just scrap all these cars and buy them back from the ppl and pay off there loans. i am looking into buying a different brand of car. one the corporation will communicate better then gm is now the company of we wont say a word til you get hurt. dealerships telling owners to just drive your cars but becareful til they do get the part in. *tr

David stanely chevrolet oklahoma city was notified in may that we need to take care of the recall notices on the power steering and ignition. they said it would take 6-8 weeks to get the parts. as of the 4th of august they have made no attempt to fix these recalls and we are now being told we have an appointment to have it inspected for parts on sep 18th. is this how gm is handling all these recalls? *tr

While driving down the interstate at 70 mph,i had a warning light and the display read svc esc. shortly after, the power steering display came on in the vehicle. i then immediately lost control of vehicle. it took great force to steer the vehicle off of the highway to a safe location. i then used the onstar service, they ran a quick diagnostic - result came back that they were unable to connect to the power steering system - the power steering system had lost electrical connection or had failed completely - they were unable to let me know without having it diagnosed further at a local chevy dealership. the vehicle was then towed to the local chevy dealer. they ran a diagnostic and found that my entire steering column needed to be replaced. they also explained that other models of the hhr were recalled for the same issue that i experienced, however my model was considered "safe". *tr

My vehicle is on gms recall list because of an ignition problem. i was driving down a small hill on friday may 2, 2014, when my car shut off. i had nothing on my ignition key ring when this happened and had just my key in the ignition when this happened. i called gm and let them know what had happened they offered to give me a rental car that they will pay for until my car is fixed . my concern is that these cars should not be on the road because they are a safety hazard to not only the person driving these cars but also to the people on the road with them, i know gm is doing all that it can to fix the problem and wonder why they are being allowed to be driven on the roads when they are unsafe. i do not feel comfortable driving my car because of the risk it poses not only to me but to others on the road and will be getting a rental . oh and by the way when my car shut off, it was all i could do to steer it around the corner because off course my power steering was gone making it difficult to steer. *tr

As i was driving down the street my power steering sign came on and i had difficulty steering. after parking and letting my car sit when i started it again i was able to drive for several miles before the power steering sign came on again. *tr

You tell me that there are recalls on my 2010 chevy hhr and when i call the chevy dealer that i bought it from ( deery brother chevrolet) in pleasanthill ia. and chevrolet motors they tell me there are no recalls on my vehicle. *tr

As i was driving down the off ramp of the freeway the front of my car started to shake and rattle. a couple minutes later after turning a corner, only going 30mi/hr, the cars power steering then turned off. every time i turn my car on and take a trip the power steering goes off at least twice. which is about 5-6 times a day. *js

The power steering keeps shutting off? i will be driving when i will hear this brief chiming sound and my odometer readout on the dashboard is replaced with a flashing "power steering" message. suddenly the vehicle is a bear to steer? it almost takes a muscle man to drive the vehicle at this point. it used to occur only once in a while. now the power steering is constantly out. i'm taking this car in to the dealer now... the service rep stated that if my issue is a "power steering motor" replacement that it will cost me $325.00 including parts. however if the complete "steering column" needs replacement, the guy laughed and stated that i should consider taking a second out on my home, that this would be pricey. and that if both parts needed to be replaced...? well... let's not go there he said... just bring it in and we'll run a series of computer diagnostics on it. oh boy... my first chevrolet... *tr

On 03/30/2014 the power steering light went on my hhr panel and the power steering went out. at that time i could power off the car and the power steering would work for one to two days. within a week of this, the power steering would go out each time the car was started and driven within 5 minutes or less. it occurs if you are driving at 5 mph to 65 mph and if the car is cold or hot. this is becoming more of a safety issue as it requires extra strength to maneuver the car since no power steering is available. at this time chevrolet has announced a recall on 03/31 for the 2010 hhr but nothing has shown up when i put my vin number on their website. i am concerned about not having power steering but we need the car for transportation. today is june 5 and this issue occurs every day and no recall notice has happened with my vin. the mileage was adjusted from the original complaint. *tr
