Problems with 2009 Chevrolet HHR AIR BAGS

Takata recall on feb,25/2019 i was i was traveling 95 north to chesterfield to get on chippenham parkway and i was in a car accident with my 2009 hhr i hit a another car from behind and my hood on my hhr was torn back so bad it would not open ,the airbag did deploy i was going about 30 mph when the person in front me came to a complete stop. and i slammed on brakes i have to see a i have to see a doctor now.

My airbag light keeps coming on and off to get serviced. my warranty is ran out so i don't have the money to get it fixed. what can i do?

For approximately 6 months when i start my 2009 chevy hhr panel, the air bag warning light comes on. it does not go out while driving. the warning light does not always come on as it is an intermittent issue. it only comes on at starting never while driving. i am very concern that the air bag is not operating properly. i found that gm did a limited recall on a connector. my vehicle did not come up for a recall.

Airbag light comes on when the interior temperature rise, after the interior cool down the light goes off. i have to turn the air condition on high to cool down the interior temperature to get the light to go out.

I have found through research that there has been a recall previously due to the airbag lights, apparently this was never fixed in our car. we bought the car this past december. the light comes on even when no one is in the passenger seat and now the light and system says that we need to service the airbags.

I have a 2009 hhr and i have been having a number of problems the esc and the abs warning lights come at low speeds around 5 to 15 mph and the brakes make a growling noise i drive 80 miles a day back and forth to work in stop and go traffic on the interstate and the turnpike i am afraid i will rear end somebody or worse i don't want to let my wife drive the car because when it occurs she might not know on to react. when i turn the car off and it goes away for a while but comes back. and the service air bag light comes on from time to time when it is raining or heavy dew i had the recall performed on the air bags and it still is happening the passenger air bag display on the dash will come on when there is no one sitting in the passenger seat. the service abs light also comes on at the same time as the esc and the traction control light i don't feel safe i have 179,000 miles on the car the electrical system in this car has a major problem and it needs to be addressed by gm before more people are hurt or killed as i have read in other comments i don't want to take it to the dealer and just go thru the remove and replace tango trying to get lucky and fix the problem or play car doctor and treat the symptoms and not address the malady

I was driving down the highway and all of a sudden the service airbag warning light came on as well as the warning chime. i purchased the car used in august 2013, and soon after getting it the very same warning came on. i went back to the dealer and they had it sent to a local gm dealer to be fixed. i purchased the car from a dodge and subaru dealer and they were not able to do the repair. i was shown the repair paperwork stating that a faulty airbag sensor was replaced. well just last week the very same thing happened again. the service airbag light comes on then goes off sometimes after only a few seconds. then another warning light went on stating faulty air pressure sensor. the check engine light is on as well so i'm wondering if there is some type of electrical gremlin in the car. this is extremely frustrating because i like the car but all of these stupid little issues make me want to trade it in, and never buy anything made by gm ever again. *tr

After buying the hhr the day before i went to work. on my way back home. i got off on my exit about half way down the ramp my side airbags went off. then i pushed the brakes and they did not respond sending me into a meaden causing my wheel to snap almost all the way off. *tr

Less then 24 hours off the lot i was driving home off hwy26 exiting to my town of watertown,wi. i was slowing down on the ramp and my side air bag deployed. i was hit in the head by the driver visor causing my to flinch and release the break for a slit second. i tried to reapply the break and had no breaks i was still at 40mph. it was snowing this caused me to not be able to turn so i hit a meaden snapping my a arm. i also snipped my abs cable, blew out driver ball joints, bent the tie rod, dislocated my axel bent my rim and ruined my new tire on the driver side. on the passenger side i broke my knuck and blew out my ball joints. it locked up my driver seat belt and even with no one wearing the passenger one it locked that up too. after it happened going online i have found a few more cases like mine one caused a woman to spend a month and a half in hospital from hitting a pole. *tr

My air bag warning light has gone on and off over several weeks. dealer cannot diagnosis the issue because it is not been on when i bring it ind. *tr

Airbag sensor light to have airbag service has been on for sometime. the service department has been asked about this on multiple occasions. the last answer we received is that the airbag is only under warranty for two years but previous to this we were told that the service department does not even know what this means. my service department at gadsden chevrolet has not even fixed the switch recall yet. they were supposed to call when they got the part in. even though my husband has called multiple times they still have not called. there is another issue for which they have offered for us to just pay half and they know they are suppose to fix them both at the same time. my car has been in the shop multiple times and yet they still never fixed the previous recall & now this airbag thing has come up. *tr

I was pulling out of a parking space at wal mart and a beeping sound got my attention and then i realized the steering wheel was almost impossible to turn.. i stopped in the middle of the lane and turned the car off... we sat there for about 15 seconds and i started the car again and the steering was fine then.. we then drove about a half mile to the dollar tree and it happened again as i was pulling into a parking space.. i parked and we went in the store.. when i came back out it was working again... then today, sept. 15, 2014, i pulled into the library and as soon as i started to turn into a parking space, the steering wouldn't work and the beeping sound started and the power steering light was on again... . i turned it off right there and waited a few seconds and it was again working... we don't trust taking this car anywhere and had planned an extended trip to washington to stay with our granddaughter but we just don't dare do it... this is such a huge safety issue and we want it fixed!!!!! also, the service air bag light has been on for almost the entire time we have owned the car.. i have all the receipts of taking it in to be checked and the charges we have incurred... it has been on the last time for over a month as we had just had it in again .. the light went off for about 20 miles after we left the dealership and then came on and has been on ever since... this whole thing has been ridiculous!!!!!! who can help us????? *tr

Service air bag- this message comes up a lot when car is started. it is coming up more often now though. this vehicle has not been in an accident. i have seen on line that other gm vehicles are being recalled for this problem. talked to my chevy dealer about this and he said that there is no recall and it is our issue. our hhr has been recalled for ignition switch and a power steering issue so far. i feel that the service air bag light is just another gm problem. with this warning light on, i do not know if our air bags will deploy. are our lives in jeopardy? *tr

They need to give rental cars untilthey get the parts in this would insure our safety and speed up the process that they say they are making the parts as fast as possible .that's just not acceptable. fix our cars right now i am not ready to die in gm junk. my air bag light came on says it needs service well fix it gm. i cant worry all the time the stress is to much. *tr

I purchased this car in august 2009( special auto program) and had to return in august 2009 for the drivers airbag light kept flashing on and off. the repaired was done (necessary to replace & program pass presence module ) at that time. i started having this same issue this year and brought it back for service again 6/20/14. paid $315.00 to be repaired and picked it up today and the flashing light is still on. my concern is this may also be a factory defect also that has not been detected. i am feeling a little uncomfortable with the airbag being repaired and still doing the same thing. i am a senior and i travel always with a 33 year old totally disabled child. if my airbag is not working correctly , you would have two people impacted by this. now i was told to bring it back but as isaid i am not feeling to good about the job really being done. as a consumer what can i do other then have this on file with your off? *tr

My chevrolet 2009 hhr airbag light comes on when the car has been sitting in the sun for a few hours on a hot day. once the car cool off the light goes off, or if it is before the sun come up there is no problem. i reported this to my chevrolet dealer and they pretended like this issue was foreign to them, but as i search the internet i see this issue reported by more owners than i can count. there is an issue going on and this need to be corrected in a recall. *tr

I was leaving work and my speed was 30 mph or less when dinging sound came on and screen showed service air bags. i had no idea what that meant. i don't know if the vehicle is safe to drive or not!!! it stays on awhile then goes off, but always comes back on. i see where this is an ongoing problem that lots of people are having is there no way to get chevrolet to fix this problem?? it's obvious that it's their problem. *tr

The red light keeps coming on and off that the air bag needs service.it seems it the passenger side, as it beeps and there is no one there or i have my purse sitting on the seat. the car dealership said it's not on the recall list and i wanted to do diagnostic that it would cost me $98.00. i have read on the chevy website for owners there is a lot of people with the same compliant with different model years. *tr

Service airbag lights keeps coming on. took it to get looked at today. the passenger airbag was bad. it is going to cost $1200 to get new airbag installed. i did some research and found that this is a common problem the 09 hhr. it is not under warranty. contacted chevy with no response. the car was never in an accident or even bumped by anything for a airbag to go bad. *tr

Taken the car to dealer multiple times, for power steering failure as well as the car stalling.. was told there was nothing that could be done about the car... was side swiped on road on 03/14/2014... car barely tapped us and we lost control of the car due to power steering issue... ran into the guardrail.. car was totaled while the other car (a 2005 toyota prius) drove home... driver had head injuries while passenger had contusions to his right hand from airbags. this car is a death trap waiting to happen.. *tr

2009 chevy hhr , the air bag light come on and goes off multiple times a day. the passenger seat belt is locked up , i purchased the pos 3 months ago it has not had its first oil change yet. i have heard the wiring is a issue and its all built in mexico which makes me sleep well. obviously its a big issue but im sure we don't want to make a big deal of air bags failing at 60,000 miles, lots of online complaints on air bags, if something happens to me in this crap car its been addressed with the gov. don't buy hhrs there outsourced junk, matter of fact my 2003 2500hd is a crap pile too, with 90k on the clock, replaced almost everything electrical on it. *tr

For no apparent reason the "service air bag" warning light comes on. occurs while smoothly traveling at 60 mph on i-70. cannot get light to go off or reset. vehicle has never been hit, bumped or jolted. web posts indicate this is a common hhr problem. gm needs or to make this right. *tr

Service airbag light is on. told by mechanic that it's a common issue in hhrs and cobalts, due to poorly designed parts. gm says i have to pay to fix it. i'm also told that the airbags will not deploy in an accident, making this car undriveable. this is absolutely ridiculous and should be listed on a recall immediately, if both gm and random mechanics know about the problem. *tr
