We have classified the 116 complaints from 2009 Chevrolet HHR about STEERING into the following categories.
The vehicle has started losing power steering at low speeds intermittently. in researching the problem, a recall on the electronic power steering for this 2009 hhr was found. in addition, i found that gm issued a bulletin (14119) under recall n140115, stating that for model year 2006-2008 and early production 2009 hhrs, to provide eps motor replacement for the life of the vehicle. since i have not had this vehicle since 2009, i contacted the dealership to look up the recall history and found the eps motor was replaced once already. however, this late 2008 production/mid-2009 delivery hhr is losing power steering at low speeds again. while myself and teenage daughter have driven it on the road. the dealership could get no diagnostic code of this and has told me there is no open recall on this vehicle and we are responsible for paying for the motor replacement. i am very disturbed that this problem 1. generates no code, 2. is being unacknowledged by gm, and 3. seems to be an on-going threat to safety for many hhr drivers. gm has made a mistake in not including my make/model (or so it seems) in the bulletin pertaining to replacing the eps motor for life and is failing to acknowledge that they may have additional vehicles on the road needing to be serviced, especially when the driver states there is a problem posing a serious safety concern. note, the production of my hhr being in 2008, delivered in 2009 and failure by gm to acknowledge under bulletin 14119.
Have owned 1- 2008 & 1-2009 hhr ss with 2.0l turbo charger and manual 5 speed trans, and right at 100,000 miles the front suspension makes a horrendous noise like the front suspension is going fall out from under it when hitting small bumps . also if you move the steering wheel back and forth it will make a very similar noise. the 2008 got totaled from a lady pulling out in front of me had changed the sway bar end links prior to accident made no change. meeting the same mileage on the 2009 and already making the same exact noise . almost afraid to drive it on the freeway for fearing of loosing the steering and killing anyone. i have read up on this concern and have seen alot of people with same noise and have spent 1,000s of dollars and noise still there. you would think someone would have been able to correct the problem before there are deaths involved but even the dealership can't find the fix. really feel like this should be investigated at once, can't believe that there hasn't been a recall done yet.
I have had my hhr 2009 for a year now and i've changed the brakes twice within two weeks..the first set was still new but it kept making grinding noises and roaring noises when i press down on brakes... my steering wheel shakes like crazy i really do love my car and i wanna get the problem resolved asap.
My 2009 hhr has a problem with the shift gear sticking and not releasing to put it in drive or reverse also i bet problems where the car is revving up while driving and then jerks like someone is hitting it from behind i took it into bachman chevrolet to have it fixed and they said it was fixed it is now doing the same problem again i'm afraid i'm going to be hit while driving when it starts jerking and hesitating and the engine is revving while in drive not sure what is going on while i'm driving.
2009 chevy hhr had problems with stick gear stuck and will not move on position to dr or rev for several minutes. car has been hesitating and racing to then jerks like i'm being hit. happens everyone i press on the gas . i took it into bauchman chevrolet to have serviced and was told it was fixed 2 weeks later it is doing it again. it almost caused a rear end due to hesitation. i need to get this fixed by dealership. others have reported same issues .

The steering wheel turns to right by itself while driving slow. i have to hold the steering while real tight and firm to stop it from turning right. on aug 26 2017 at 5pm, i was ready to make a slight right turn, but the steering wheel took control over me, the car turned right by itself before i turned the steering wheel. this morning while driving in slow traffic, the steering wheel turned towards right, i had put strength and hold firm and strong with my hands on steering wheel to stop it from turning right by itself. while driving fast, i felt the steering wheel vibrate towards right and heard vibrating sound...it could be life threatening if the steer wheel is out of control.
The var jerks when it reaches gear changes and makes it harder to steer and the check engin light stays on. shows error code u0101

I was making a left hand turn when my power steering suddenly stopped working. the power steering light was on the dash board and vehicle was very difficult to drive. on 09\10\2014 i called serra chevrolet in madison tn and told a service rep named [xxx] what had happened and what i needed to do to get this fixed. she told me that i needed to call back in a couple of weeks when a new recall was issued. i asked if this could happen again and she replied "its possible." so i asked her what i could do to fix this and she said "well you can bring it to us and pay to have it fixed and when a new recall was issued i could get my money back from them." if they have this part in stock should they not fix it now and not let this power loss happen again? i have to work and i'm very nervous this will happen again without warning. i also never received a recall notice a year ago or i would have had this done then. thanks information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

I was pulling out of a parking space at wal mart and a beeping sound got my attention and then i realized the steering wheel was almost impossible to turn.. i stopped in the middle of the lane and turned the car off... we sat there for about 15 seconds and i started the car again and the steering was fine then.. we then drove about a half mile to the dollar tree and it happened again as i was pulling into a parking space.. i parked and we went in the store.. when i came back out it was working again... then today, sept. 15, 2014, i pulled into the library and as soon as i started to turn into a parking space, the steering wouldn't work and the beeping sound started and the power steering light was on again... . i turned it off right there and waited a few seconds and it was again working... we don't trust taking this car anywhere and had planned an extended trip to washington to stay with our granddaughter but we just don't dare do it... this is such a huge safety issue and we want it fixed!!!!! also, the service air bag light has been on for almost the entire time we have owned the car.. i have all the receipts of taking it in to be checked and the charges we have incurred... it has been on the last time for over a month as we had just had it in again .. the light went off for about 20 miles after we left the dealership and then came on and has been on ever since... this whole thing has been ridiculous!!!!!! who can help us????? *tr

They need to give rental cars untilthey get the parts in this would insure our safety and speed up the process that they say they are making the parts as fast as possible .that's just not acceptable. fix our cars right now i am not ready to die in gm junk. my air bag light came on says it needs service well fix it gm. i cant worry all the time the stress is to much. *tr

I have had 3 problems so far where my power steering went out. i have contacted two different chevy dealers and they said that my vin number is not on the recall list. on the gm website it says that there is a recall on the 2009 chevy hhr electronic power steering. because the dealer says my vin is not included they refuse to honor the recall. i would like gm to step up and take responsibility to repair this issue. i am concerned that i could be involved in a accident because of this issue. http://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/news.detail.html/content/pages/news/us/en/2014/oct/1007-recalls.html http://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/news.detail.html/content/pages/news/us/en/2014/mar/0331-power-steering.html. *tr
On april 28, 2014, while taken a curve power steering (ps) stopped working, lost control and damage only wheel cover, fortunately the area a came to a full stop was clear of car and people. the ps worked fine soon after that. again, on may 10, 2014 the ps went out again, but this time i was taking a small turn and was able to control steered it in the right direction. presently we are researching the malfunction to cure the problem, but unable to locate the problem. *tr
Loss of power steering when attempting to turn into side street. warning message on dash. car was brought to dealership, expecting problem to be repaired free of charge under gm recall/bulletin 14115 or 14119, but was told by dealership that this vin had no steering recalls or bulletins as of yet. paid almost $1000 to replace column and power steering motor. i would expect to be reimbursed. this is a company owned vehicle. *tr

Power steering is intermitently going out. i can turn the car off and on again and it works for a while then gives out again. *tt
Power steering quit working. restarted vehicle and power steering resumed working. over next two weeks intermittent loss of power steering became more frequent. a recall issued for this exact problem on this make and model does not include my vin number. therefore chevrolet will not acknowledge the problem with this vehicle for repair at their expense. the symptoms are the same as in nhtsa complaint number 14v153000. *tr
The esc light cae on and it became difficult to steer, turn, and jerking when i apply the brakes. i've taken my hhr to the dealership on 3 and 4 of april 2014 for software update. back to dealership on 7,8,9, for computer, however there was no additional charge. 17 april same issues as the 3 rd. 21 st to tweak the esc problems. i have spoke with [xxx] the service manager at rinke chevrolet 586 754 7000. i have left several messages for ed rinke the dealership owner. i need my vehicle to be safe! can you please assist me [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
I have received safety recalls for potentially fatal system failures to my vehicle. i was told by the dealership that there are no replacement parts to fix this issue, and they have no idea when they will have parts. so until then i am to drive this unsafe vehicle, with my family in it and just hope for the best? i tried to purchase another vehicle, as we typically do after 2-3 years of financing, only to find not one dealership will buy it back from me in trade, including the one i purchased it from, due to the major safety recalls. so i am essentially trapped in a vehicle that has already had 2 of the 3 recalls actually occur to it, and just hope the one that can cause a fatal crash, does not also happen. *tr
The power steering malfunctioned on my chevy hhr on 3/19/2014 for the first time. it has happened several times since then, today--4/3/2014 being the most recent. every time the warning lights start flashing because my power steering has gone out. the first time i was doing 50 mph while passing a state trooper. because of the malfunction i was unable to fully move over a lane and was ticketed. when i explained the fact that i was confused because i did not know what was going on with the car and was not able to move over properly the state trooper did not believe me and issued me a $435 ticket! it was 2 weeks after that incident that the car was recalled for a faulty power steering motor. no kidding. that ticket is not fair to me and the entire situation is dangerous. when the power steering goes out i have little control over the car. when i shut the car off and restart it the power steering is again okay--at least until the next time it goes out and tries to kill my family. i have repeatedly contacted my local chevy dealer--as i read online i could get a loaner car until mine was fixed for the recall, and my calls are not being returned. meanwhile me and my children's lives are in danger. this is not okay. i have no other car to drive. i spent a lot of money on this vehicle. chevy should give me a loaner car while i wait for repair--our lives are in danger. also, i have a ticket that i have to go to court for. chevy should be ashamed. *tr
Taken the car to dealer multiple times, for power steering failure as well as the car stalling.. was told there was nothing that could be done about the car... was side swiped on road on 03/14/2014... car barely tapped us and we lost control of the car due to power steering issue... ran into the guardrail.. car was totaled while the other car (a 2005 toyota prius) drove home... driver had head injuries while passenger had contusions to his right hand from airbags. this car is a death trap waiting to happen.. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver as the power steering warning light illuminated. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer for a diagnostic. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 (steering). the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 87,000 and the current mileage was 90,000.
I was driving down the road and dash started flashing and beeping saying power steering . the power steering quit working while turning on snowy roads this am. i pulled over checked fuses. called dealer who states bring it in. when i restarted car power steering working again. this was a scary experience later today as im driving on freeway at 65 or so power steering went out again. my question is this is a safety issue. with more research i am seeing this is common for these cars and recalls on other chevrolets have been made for same reason. this is scary especially in northeast ohio snow weather and icy roads. i've been told cant pinpoint this until i take it in to the shop when the power steering goes out. so i guess i wait til it happens again really??? if i work far from dealership guess im supposed to drive it to dealership when it goes out at 9 pm what a joke. hope they figure out this glitch....have to share i have had this happen a while ago when had less miles and thought it was a fluke now it returns. yes high miles but car has been serviced as per recommendations since owning it. *tr
The power steering stopped working while driving and still does not work. the passenger air bag turns on and off intermittently when no one is in the seat. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that while driving 55 mph, the steering wheel seized causing the contact difficulty to maneuvering the vehicle. the contact mentioned that the eps warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the power steering motor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 14v153000 (steering). the approximate failure mileage was 61,000.
The electrical system in the car has shut down and has caused my power steering to go out while i am driving. it dings so i have some notice. but none the less really scary and very hard to turn going 20 mph. my brakes are very hard when this happens. my thermostat/ coolant information is currently displayed as dashes (----) across my dash, making this really difficult to know if it is hot or has run out and my ac is connected to this also so when it decides to work my ac will work. it will turn off and on while driving too. my mph reads my speed going 20 mph over what i am actually driving. my car has completely shut off while driving. the check engine light comes on and off making it more difficult to get codes.
Power steering overheats causing power steering to quit working when wheel is turned to left or right while car is stopped. the movement is necessary to parallel park the car. once overheated you no longer have power steering making the car difficult to drive. this is very dangerous for a new teenage driver. chevy knows of the issue, was told by gm that a replacement motor has the same issue. *tr
While operating the vehicle into a gradual left turn, a series of chimes sounded from the vehicle and a message was displayed in the communications center stating the message "power steering". the vehicle had lost power assisted steering but retained manual steering. this was reset by turning the vehicle ignition off and restarting the vehicle. *tr
Power steering message on the driver information center (dic) and loss of power steering causing difficult steering and an unsafe driving condition. *tr
2009 chevrolet hhr. consumer states paid for power steering repair. request reimbursement. *ta the consumer stated the power steering failed. *jb
The electric power steering motor failed 3 times within 20 minutes. i reset it by turning the ignition key off and restarting the car. i replaced the motor and it works fine now. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that while driving 5 mph, the power steering system malfunctioned making the vehicle difficult to steer. the contact had to shut the vehicle off and then restart in order for the power steering to regain normal functionality. the contact took the vehicle to a dealer for a diagnostic test. the dealer stated that the power steering motor was defective and the entire power steering system needed to be replaced. the contact did not have the power steering system replaced. the failure mileage was 67,000.
While making a left turn the power steering light came on and i could not turn the steering wheel. four days later it did the same thing while driving straight on the road at about 30 mph. each time i have to turn the car off and then restart it to make the problem go away. this could lead to crashes causing injury or death. *tr
While driving in a parking lot i heard a ding, looked down at the dash and saw that a power steering warning light was on. i tried pulling into a parking space and noticed that i had no power steering assist and had to muscle the car over. i turned off the engine, restarted it and everything seemed ok. this issue started happening every few days after that, sometimes at highway speed. this is a very dangerous situation, had this been a less strong person like my wife or an elderly person she would not have had the strength to steer the car! after doing extensive research i was shocked at what i found. the hhr is built on a chevy cobalt chassis, and the cobalt has a recall for this same exact issue but chevy had not had a recall on the hhr, not is the us anyway. canada has forced gm to do a recall on the hhr for this same exact issue but to date it has not been done in the us. the defective steering motor part number recalled on the cobalt was the same exact part number as the hhr, so why has this not been addressed on the hhr? if you'll read some of the hhr forums you'll learn that mine was not as isolated occurrence, it is very common and seems to start happening when the cars get around 50,000 miles. had this happened to an elder person at highway speeds chances are they would not have been able to control the vehicle, this disables the steering! i had this repaired at an astronomical cost of over $800. my car was still under warranty, but surprise surprise gm said this is not covered under the chassis warranty? what, the steering is not a component of the chassis? this issue needs to be addressed, im surprised someone's life has not already been lost over this issue. please force gm to recall this issue and refund ones like me that have had to pay out of our pockets to have this repaired. *tr
While driving the 2009 chevy hhr back from work, without warning, the electric power steering stopped and a warning message came up on the dic. once ignition was shut off the problem cleared temporarily. over the past 24 hours the power steering has continued to exhibit the same erratic behavior. *tr
while driving at 35 mph power steering cut out on vehicle.after pulling over & restarting engine p/steering returns for short period and cuts out again.where is govt. recall? same components used on chevy cobalt and they were recalled. no recall om hhr. oh wait, nobody died yet!!!! eventually somebody will. don't wait till it's too late. *tr
