Bought vehicle used with about 30k miles on it, at first oil change was told oil was low, this continued over the next several changes, a few times it was found to be completely out of oil, no oil leak was found, at 39k miles balance shaft chain had to be replaced, at 55k miles my check engine light came on and my car almost cut off on me while i had my infant son with me, the cam shaft had to be replaced, 56k they replaced pistons, rings, fuel pump, and timing chain due to using excess oil, a few months later my air compressor had to be replaced and now my transmission is leaking. the car has a little over 70k miles on it. also have been complaining of a rattling noise coming from the engine since i bought the car, i was told several times by the dealership that this was normal however i was told by someone at the chevrolet home office that this was not normal, i also drove another equinox while mine was in the shop being repaired and it did not make this noise. dealership has be notified of all issues with the vehicle as well as the home office for gm. *tr
Since the purchase of my chevy equinox i have had engine trouble related to the oil system. for a period of time i was initially given the run around in regards to a solution. the engine noise made it clear to me that my car needed some type of repair. my persistence enabled me to finally have the problem solved. i cannot be more specific about that event, but keeping that incident in mind leads to the next. i later began to have problems with oil consumption (several months down the road). during periods in between oil changes i began to put more and more oil in my car. this didn't make since my travel was local and not much. ( i have been out of work since last june 2013). that time i decided or i will say insisted the dealer look further into the problem when it was three weeks after an oil change and it was down almost five quarts of oil. i got a lecher about the damage it would have caused. to the point of the problem with all this. i read other letters of complaints on the website in regard to other engine or oil related issues on the chevy equinox. it seems more than apparent that this should be looked into prior to accident, injury or death. each problem or complaint also had a number of how many of each were recorded. i would hope that it wouldn't take for me to injure myself or be just another tragic death related to the big car industries. trouble shooters get paid big money to prevent such travesties. i would then expect that these glitches would be worked out to the benefit of the small people paying big money for vehicles that help them make it on the journey to a bigger a better way of life. i hope someone sitting in his or her corporate office does more than just brush this aside and post it with the other letter of complaint. *tr
Purchased suv in feb. love it and great suv. had oil changed it never alerts when oil is low, but must keep check cause computer and actual amount do not correspond. eighty percent of the time the seat adjustment works. one day took person home only left front tire hit curb as turning around. traffic was coming it had completely cut off, waited a minute restarted. just knew i would get hit. as more miles, it loses more power, getting on interstate i have to measure traffic to ensure i can get on in order not to get hit. love the vehicle, but afraid if keep more miles less power. *tr
Was driving vehicle when all of a sudden entire dash lit up and car stalled. messages included service stabilitrak, service abs, engine light, and service traction control. i lost power, power brakes, and power steering and coasted vehicle to a stop. it took a couple of tries but finally got the car to turn over, engine light remained on but drove to dealer. vehicle did not drive correctly when accelerated, it was slow and jerky. when i took the vehicle to the dealer they told me it would be covered under warranty, they plugged in their tech code reader and determined it was throttle body. i was given a concierge vehicle and informed it would take them the weekend to fix. when i picked the vehicle up they charged me saying that it would not be covered under the warranty and tried to make me pay for the rental and i have still not been reimbursed for the repairs that should have been covered under warranty or the rental car. the service agent at the dealership printed off where it clearly states that it should be covered. this is a dangerous problem and should be recalled. *tr
I purchased my car at the end of december 2013, a month later my wife noticed the car sounded louder than usual so i checked the oil and there was not a drop of oil in the engine. i quickly added oil and performed an oil change asap. i called up the dealership and they assured me an oil change is done before every purchase. i routinely check the oil and add about a quart a month. at the end of july 2014 i took my car to have the ac checked out and i asked the service center to look at the engine since it was losing about a quart a month. i get the car back a week later and they could not determine the problem. they performed an oil change and asked that i bring it back for the next oil change for an inspection. this was on 8/1/2014 and yesterday 10/2/2014 i checked the oil and once again there was not a drop of oil. it is currently at the dealership. the service tech called gm in july 2014 and found out there was a recall for equinoxes losing oil if they tow but that did not apply to my vehicle and i do not see that recall anymore. *tr

No oil on the dipstick after 3 months and 3000 miles since they replaced my drive chain and added oil i experienced no heat and transmission irregularity. added 4 qts of oil and called chevy dealer. took it in and they are replacing the rings and valves which were leaking oil into the crankcase and i was burning the oil. it will take a week to fix. they gave me a free rental car. i am concerned that this may have caused some damage to the engine. *tr

At 58569 miles the engine light was on. the catalytic converter, gasket, and nut were replaced. i began complaining about oil consumption at 72388 miles. at 77313, the engine light was flashing. the dealer got the code p0300. there was a misfire in cylinder #2. the dealer replaced the #2 coil and gasket as well as the spark plugs. at 91968 miles the engine light was on and the catalytic converter was replaced. at 103123 miles the engine light was on and throttle body gasket replaced. at 105185 miles the engine light on again. replacedspark plugs, reprogramed ecm and tcm. there was a misfire in cylinders 1-3-and 5. the dealer also performed major throttle body service and cleaned the intake. at 112358 miles the car was towed to dealer. the engine light was flashing and dealer said a misfire in cylinder #4 and oil wad found in #2 spark plug well. i check my oil level every week and have been doing so for months. i am putting in at least 1 1/2 quarts of oil every month. i change the oil every 3500 miles whether the vehicle indicates the need or not. i have read many complaints on different websites. the dealers response is that they can get me into a new equinox. it seems that this oil consumption problem is known by chevy but this suv has never been recalled for this problem.

Check engine light came on and found out that the code p 0010 was found during a scan by the dealer. contacted gm for the 100,000 power train warranty they offer on this vehicle only to find out that the cam shaft position solenoid is not covered and will cost my 108.75 for the diagnosis scan and 157.00 for the part, why is gm offering the powertrain 100,000 warranty on there engines when only certain parts are covered. is there any recalled on the engines for the chevy equinox engine made in 2010. *tr
I had to purchase an entirely new a.c system at 50k miles. they put the hose directly on the engine when building the car. therefore, the heat burned a hole into the hose which caused the system to overheat, resulting in the need for the entire a.c. system to be replaced. a month later, the car began stalling and misfiring while at stop lights. then, it progressed to misfiring while car accelerates. i was on the interstate when my car completely shut off! i was lucky to pull off to the side road as i had my 5 year old daughter in the vehicle with me. the check engine light turns on and off randomly. apparently, at 50k miles, the computer system needed to be replaced. this is apparently the cause for the issues (per a mechanic). i've replaced the battery on this car 3 times. i'm still paying the car off and have put so much money into it from it falling apart at 50k miles!
My engine rattles and makes a loud fluttering sound accompanied with the misfiring and hesitation with acceleration. i previously wrote a complaint and forgot to mention it.

At about 40,000 miles noticed that vehicle was loosing or using oil. carried to the shop and no problem could be found. at 50,000 miles engine started knocking and engine light came on. carried to the shop, found that timing chain bracket had broken. replaced timing chain, bracket , and gaskets. two months later check engine light appears again. take it to shop. ran die through engine to find out where oil loss is , checked timing chain again, changed oil, checked fuel pump, reading for check engine light was o2 sensor but nothing was done about it. it's been three weeks and check engine light is on again. car computer first sayed stabilizer bar needed checking. got that light off and car will at least go over 30miles per hour but check engine light is still on. got to carry it back to the garage. something really needs to be done for the consumers that own a 2010 equinox. this is just ridiculous. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that engine lost power and stalled without warning. there were no warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. the dealer began observing the oil consumption for over a year prior to the failure. on april 12, 2012, the dealer replaced the cam shaft actuator. after the most recent failure the contact was told by the dealer that the pistons and the rings would need to be replaced. the dealer stated that the most recent repair was a manufacturers suggestion, but the repair will not correct the problem because there is a defect in the engine. the dealer stated that when the engines were cast, there was sand left in the engine and since the engine was not flushed, it caused the engine to lock up over time. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 23,000 and the current mileage was 35,138. *tr

14159 recall for some equinox 2010 2.4l excessive engine oil consumption and first repair of same issue was done on 2014 and i had four check up and gm added some more oil then they found same issue and i have document that i dont want that pistons to be replaced and they refused to follow my suggestion so far this present car still have a excessive engine oil consumption right now so i have to pay for that repair and they refused to procced under the expired warranty
I have experienced nothing but issues with my 2010 equinox. it has been in the shop many times regarding the oil level being low and a loud noise and transmission getting stuck and slipping. also experiencing gas smell while i'm driving or when i come to a complete stop. also it's not normal for the engine to lose 3 quarts of oil out of 5qts within 3000 miles. started noticing the lost of oil may of 2013. took it to the shop and they replace the engine and other parts that go along with that repair. july of 2013 same problem occur again, lost of oil again, and then they replace front drive axle inner shaft seal. also took the car back to the shop for oil lost on dec.31, 2013 for losing 3 qts oil out of 5qts. they tell us that there is nothing wrong. they said they inspected it for oil leaks, but if they would of check the oil dip stick they would have seen the lost of 3qts of oil. also i have pictures that i took of the oil dip stick showing only 2qts of oil on dec.17 2013. also we have contacted gm and no help from them. i've investigated this problem i learned that i?m not the only one experiencing the same problem across the united states. also on the invoice that i received they did not do an oil consumption test which involves more than just checking for leaks? seem like there not following the service procedures. it's obviously an internal defect in the 2.4 liter engine that causes it to burn that much oil. also i have all my papers when i took it to the shop. also they gave us a copy of the multi-point inspection where it indicates the fuel system, engine, transmission, drive axle; transfer case requires attention soon, wow you think that's why my transmission is slipping. *tr
2010 chevy equinox will lose power at any speed. i have lost power on the interstate at 65mph, local driving at 40mph as well as stopping at a traffic light. it pretty much just happens out of the blue endangering my life as well as the vehicles around me. the check engine light will come on but does not stay on. if i turn the vehicle off , it will restart and may run fine for days or weeks afterward. i have contacted gm , but to date have not had the issue resolved.
I purchased a 2010 chevy equinox on 4/1/2013. i have since had a few issues with the vehicle. i had the timing belt replaced due to knocking in the engine. i thank the good lord that it was under a recall. i have also been experiencing oil loss. i have my oil changed on a regular basis and it has been using oil between those changes. the last time i had it changed, i was told that there was no oil on the dip stick when they checked it prior to doing the change. i have also gone without a defroster as well. haven't thought much about it since i haven't needed it yet but now the weather is changing and i know i am going to need it real soon. but guess what. even though there is a recall on that, mine doesn't fall under that recall. i f there are so many people having the same issue, you would think it would be covered no matter. it isn't my fault that it is not working properly. so, right before christmas i am going to have to shell out over $400 to get this fixed so that i will be able to see out of my front windshield. i guess it is my fault that i have waited till now to worry with it. i am also having issues with my dash lights going in and out and my air bag light stays on. there should not be that many issues with one vehicle. *tr
Start-up noise coming from engine, sounds very similar to running a diesel. vehicle is experiencing rough idle, or near stalling/complete stall out at a low throttle opening. check engine light came on throwing codes p0014 and p0011. vehicle is also burning through at least 2 quarts of oil each week and not receiving the expected amount of gas mileage (only about 1/2). these issues are very similar to those recorded for recall 11195a on the 2011 equinox model with the 2.4l engine. my 2010 is no longer covered under gm's powertrain warranty and would like to see this recall extended for the 2010 models as i am not the only one experiencing these problems. http://chevroletforum.com/forum/equinox-23/yet-another-2010-equinox-burning-oil-stalling-51192/ http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/f53/2011-equinox-cold-start-engine-noise-102947/index4.html. *tr
After about a year of owning this vehicle, we have experienced several issues with engine related problems starting in 2011 to current recent issue on 30/2014. we have been to the dealer for several "repairs" and have continued to have additional problems. on several occasions the vehicle has stalled while driving, engine shifts hard/delayed while driving, excessive oil loss between oil changes. oil is changed and added before every 3,000 miles or sooner in recent months due to low oil and engine making "knocking" sound. took vehicle to dealer for recent noise and engine light. they are stating it needs engine work done for oil being "burned" in engine through the exhaust in excess of $1600. listed several items that need repair in conjunction with this issue. *tr
My check engine light came on. i brought my car to an autoparts store to get the code. upon running the code it was discovered the oil was low in the car. the mechanic put it in 3 quarts of oil. i had my oil changed in october and had just put 3000 miles on the car. the next day the check engine light came on again and the car was 1 quart of oil low. i called the chevy dealer and gave them the code p00014. they said it was my camshaft and to bring it in for warranty work. upon drop off they said they could smell oil burning and heard a knocking in the engine. they said the oil in my car was very black/dirty and low when they received it. they told me to make sure i change my oil regularly and not follow the "oil life" light in the car. they did an oil change and said the car was running fine. i was informed to keep an eye on the oil so they could do a consumption test. a week later the same check engine code came on in my car. i brought it back to the dealership. they replaced chains and actuators in the engine. i got my car back, watched the oil and drove 1000 miles. at that point my car was 1.3 quarts of oil low. the dealership documented it and sent me on. i drove 700 miles and was 3/4 a quart of oil low. it also had that knocking noise in the engine again. the dealership took my car back and called gm. they were told took look for markings in the engine. they ended up replacing my entire engine and the fuel pump system due to the markings they found. gm said these problems were linked to issues in engines with these marks. my situation has been fixed for now but i wanted to make my problem known for others who have not had it fixed. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that while driving 55 mph, the check engine warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection where they stated that the cam shaft actuator needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 20,000.
It started with the check engine light would come on and the stabilitrak light coming on sometimes. and you hear a rough idle.and a horrible rattling noise was coming from the engine while parked and. when i drove the car when accelerating it sounded worse as if i was driving a diesel truck. and the car would stay on for about 2 to 3 seconds after i turned the car off. so i dropped the car off at the dealer they checked it with a scanner and they got the p0172 - too rich error code. and they saw for themselves the car stayed on after turning off the car and the rattling noise it was making. after 2 days i picked up the car coalition??t hear the rattling noise as much.you could still hear the rattling but very slightly the check engine light was off. after a week driving my car you can hear the rattling noise very, very little. they fixed the rattling noise somewhat it was covered ( by power train warranty) however both the check engine light and the stabilitrak light came back on. and the car still would stay on for about 2 to 3 seconds after i turned the car off. and sometimes when i start my car it would rev up has if i step on the gas pedal and then it will drop to normal. all issues were not resolved still having problems with check engine light stabilitrak light on and the car staying on. for a few seconds. after turn off the car. took it back to the dealership now they are saying they found that it is a problem with the high pressure fuel pump and the body throttle. not functioning correctly. this may cause gas to leak into the oil. i did some research this is a common problem with the 4 cyl equinox. the dealership said the repair would not be under the 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. *tr
Equinox starts powering down occasionally during acceleration through hard right turns and, once, during a soft bump against a curb. dashboard lights turn off, engine dies, etc. can be restarted from stop. we had been able to duplicate the problem, but haven't been able to do so at the dealership, so it remains unfixed. we are concerned about the safety of driving a vehicle that may power down during a hard right turn and heavy acceleration. we now intentionally accelerate slowly and cautiously through right turns. we worry that we will get in a situation where, for instance, we'll need to turn out of the way of a semi trailer and our car will power down, putting us in great danger. *tr
Smells like something is burning & service engine stays light is on, engine has low power or is idling rough with a whining noise from high pressure fuel pump. model 2010 equinox, has a couple other recalls that also tie into the constant electrical problems. also i recently went to adjust the vent and the button disappeared into the dash. what's this. it's something new every week now. no know cause for the engine light, despite diag. tests. my fuel mileage is also shortened although the vehicle is on a strict maint. schedule. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. while driving approximately 45 mph, there was an abnormal noise coming from the engine. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the timing chain needed to be repaired. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure persisted and the vehicle stalled. after two attempts, the vehicle restarted. the vehicle was taken back to a dealer where the failure was unable to be determined. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 62,300.
I had been having oil consumption problems, like many other owners of 2010 equinoxes and was undergoing an oil consumption test. was driving on i-81s on a 500 mile trip. when i started the car after stopping for gas, it idled very roughly. foolishly, i got back on the interstate, thinking that maybe a higher speed would help. the car would not get up to a safe speed and completely stalled out about a quarter mile from the exit, leaving me stranded (by myself) 150 miles from my destination. was towed 70 miles to a dealership who replaced the timing chain, tensioner and fuel pump. this dealer stated the problem was due to low oil level as well as dirty oil. i incurred an unexpected $1200 bill and was without my car for a week. my home dealership replaced my engine 2 weeks ago and i received reimbursement for the repair bill. i am pleased, presently, with the response from gm, but it required persistence. although i have had my present problem rectified, i'm reporting this problem as many, many others have been experiencing this same problem with varying responses from gm. i've also experienced some shifting problems as well, but the engine problem took precedence, so i'm waiting to see if the transmission problem continues! *tr
I have had many problems with this vehicle regarding electrical, audio, airbag lights coming on and now engine oil. the engine oil was just detected at 80,000 miles however i have complained that my car does not run right since the beginning. they claim that the engine is burning off the oil however i am very good at getting my oil changes around 3000 miles and where is the oil going? its not in my garage or on the engine? i have had my car completely go blank on the dash no indicator lights etc. i have filled a complaint with chevy to no avail. i am very disappointed that now my engine needs to be replaced or maybe just he pistons? at 80,000 miles? this has been going on since i owned it from sept 2009! i think chevy needs to step up and make things right! disappointed. just for the record i bought this car in california. *js
Car was having rough idling and intermittent stalling at stops starting about a week ago. stalled at light yesterday and couldn't keep it started; happened to be across the street from dealership. shop indicated it was due to late oil change (low and dirty oil). only potential issue identified was the cam shaft actuators sticking but indicated there were no bulletins or recalls and it was just from the late oil change. upon further research, i have found a lot of information indicating there have been a lot of stalling and actuator issues with this vehicle and there really would be no reason at all my oil would be low of course (last oil change had been 7000 miles ago - i commute to work daily so the miles add up quickly). i'm definitely anticipating further issues but so far since yesterday, just the oil change has improved the rough idling and no stalling yet. with the number of complaints i've seen on line (and even my co-worker guessed i had an equinox when i described the issue because he has had 2 actuator replacements and timing chain replaced), i'm finding it very hard to believe the dealer didn't know these issues are out there. *tr
When starting the vehicle at any time the engine idles very rough and rpms fluctuate significantly enough that it shakes the vehicle. engine noise is very loud, even for a small direct-injected engine. when driving the throttle is slow or jerky to respond and the engine noise increases. at different rpms a rattling sound comes from the engine compartment, as though something is loose and will fall off. i have had this vehicle at our chevy dealer several times for this issue and most recently for the vehicle not shutting-down when powered off. the high-pressure fuel pump was replaced based on gm bulletin but nothing was done about the loud and obscene engine noise. dealer stated this was normal operation although bulletins exist in gm system for timing and valve-train issues and repairs. i am concerned that the engine will simply quite one day under normal operation. planned obsolescence at 100,001 miles? i will be taking the vehicle to another dealer very soon to try an remedy the situation and understand my concern and work with me to correct issues. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that the check engine light illuminated and the air conditioning failed. in addition, the contact stated that the engine fans would continue running for 20 minutes after the vehicle had been powered off. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer who informed the contact that they were unable to duplicate the failure. the contact took the vehicle to a second dealer and was told that the heating center was failing. the contact spoke to the manufacturer in regard to nhtsa recall campaign id number: 09v489000 (visibility: defroster/defogger system) but the manufacturer advised that the vehicle was not included in the recall campaign. the failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 15,000.
During idle from stop light to stop light in city traffic, vehicle began to idle very rough during stops and had reduced power while moving. eventually it died out at a stop light. general motors reference pip5025 for excessive oil consumption and cylinder damage per dealer repair report. car has been "repaired" but is still running somewhat rough and is giving off a strong gasoline odor and engine oil smells like gasoline - have another appointment with dealer to have checked out - has not stalled out again since repair though. *tr

Purchased 4/2010 1 at a red light, car idled really rough, then all of the dash lights came on. i drove straight to the dealership. they checked it out and said i needed a new fuel pump. i had about 47,000 miles. 2. oil consumption - the first time this happened i was hearing a funny noise when i turned left coming from the engine. my boyfriend checked the oil the next morning to find no oil on the dipstick. we put in 2 qts then when the dealer ship opened i took it in. they told me they could not find any internal or external leaks so bring in weekly for oil consumption test (i was about 1500 miles since my oil change that was done at the same time the fuel pump was replaced) drove out of town to visit family (about 2000 miles after oil change) after driving 200 miles heard the noise again checked the oil.......2 qts low. added oil and took to local dealership. no problems found related to oil, but did find another alert that needed to be completed when i got home related to the water pump tensioner. gm customer service again , but only was told to wait until my next scheduled oil change and start consumption tests again. 3. i pod jack - worked fine for the first 2 years, but then would cause all center console lights to go out, could not operate radio or a/c. 4. stalling - i have only had this problem once but it was as i was turning left across 3 lanes of traffic! 5. jerky transmission - the first time this issue happened it jerked so hard i thought i hit something. took it to the dealership and was told, like others it was the transmission "learning" me. the transmission codes were updated and problem only occurs occasionally 6. drivers seat lumbar support airbladder - has popped and had to be replaced two times. *tr
Vehicle burns large quantities of oil, often in short periods of time. (we will check oil, it's fine, and then a few days later we've burned two quarts.) this requires us to pull over rapidly and find new oil to prevent engine failure, making it a major safety hazard. we've burned 1 to 2 quarts of oil every 1,000 to 1,500 miles pretty consistently since march, when we first discovered we were down 3 quarts. *tr
