Problems with 2010 Chevrolet Equinox ENGINE

On average, the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 81 383 miles.

I've had an exhaust problem for the fourth time!

I received a chevrolet 2010 equinox from bob's says yes super store in columbus, ohio in 2016.two weeks later we had engine problems.we informed them and got a diagnostic and bob says yes informed me that nothing was wrong.a few weeks(approximately 4 weeks) go by and we take it back and bobs tells us that we had to pay for a diagnostic test.so we had the state of ohio attorney general office involved.bob says yes agrees to a free diagnostic test and when they finally agreed to look into the problem they agreed to pay the $1000.00 of the $1600.00 of which $600.00 we would have to pay.later during the week i call bob says yes to get a update on the repairs and they inform me that they are going to replace the engine and the work cost more but they are not going to charge us more.apparently if they are covering a recall then under the fact it is a recall i should not be paying anything so i will be contacting the ohio attorney general on this updated information.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. while driving 40 mph, the transmission failed. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the contact also stated that there was excessive oil consumption with no safety defect. the contact stated that there was an abnormal grinding noise emitted from the engine. the contact also stated that the air conditioning unit and windshield defroster failed to operate as intended. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact was informed that the air conditioning evaporator needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 130,000.

My 2010 chevy equinox started with an oil consumption problem 86,000 miles may 2016 all new pistons, rings, high pressure fuel pump timing chain and seals covered on gm extended warranty. 1 month later the tranny goes 87,000 mi towed car to dealer they are telling me i have no warranty will cost anywhere from $3-5,000. all i read is bad news about this transmission.

Number one excessive oil started at about 55,000 miles. number two excessive engine noise from timing chain and cam seizures. number three transmission failure 52,000 miles. number 4 wiper transmission failure at approximately 48000 miles number 5 check engine light on due to faulty cam actuators.

While driving on i80 in rural pa engine started missing intermittently. when i exited the road to investigate the engine immediately started to run very rough and the information center was showing a problem with stabili-track - which made no sense since it was summer and the road was dry. after vehicle was shut off for awhile and restarted it seemed to run more smoothly. however, as i accelerated back up to highway speed the misfiring returned. we continued to limp along at a slower speed with emergency flashers operating while we searched by phone for the nearest gm dealer. after several different attempts gm roadside assistance was able to identify a dealer about 20 miles away. we successfully contacted them and reached their location where they were able to diagnose the problem as a failed #3 cylinder coil. a fix was completed and we were able to resume our trip. i estimate we drove about 60 miles pretty much in the middle of no whee on 3 cylinders before being able to find help. two days later on the return leg of this same trip the windshield wipers also failed in a severe rain storm while in a several mile construction zone with no berm. only a miracle prevented a multiple fatality multiple car accident. this was a well maintained vehicle with only 64,000 miles that had never previously had any significant problems.

Engine light on with 60000 miles, timing chain code, known issue and gm wanted $4000.00 to fix. changed all timing gears and tentioners in december of 2017.

Exhaust manifold crack which is a recurring failure. will be replacing the manifold for the 4th time that should never fail. photo attached from one of the failures. exhaust fumes enter the cabin of the vehicle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was taken to several dealers for diagnosis where it was diagnosed that the rear of the engine was leaking oil and it would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 97,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. while driving at various speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 100,000. updated 05/06/16*lj updated 05/16/16.*jb

The vehicle was in motion, accelerating on a freeway entrance ramp. as i was merging, the engine lost power and started a loud knocking noise. i could not accelerate, started slowing, but was able to get to the shoulder. i had the vehicle towed to the nearest chevy dealer, where a quick diagnosis was that the engine had failed, and would have to be replaced. this engine has had 2 warranty repairs related to oil issues (8/2011 and 8/2014). in both cases the timing chains, tensioner, gaskets and seals, etc. were replaced. also, in 2014 there was a recall to reprogram the oil life monitor. there was a recall letter in september, 2014 regarding excessive engine oil use due to piston ring wear caused by the previous issues. this condition was to have an extended warranty of 10 years or 120,000 miles. i blame the engine failure as an extension of these oil related issues, while chevy says 'no".

Engine sputters and is very noisy when at idle. also, it consumes oil at an alarming rate.

At 45,000 miles the vehicle suffered from excessive oil consumption and the engine became very loud. the engine was replaced under warranty with a new one. now at 100,000 miles it has the exact same problem. our warranty just ran out so they said we are responsible for the damages. the vehicle was maintained very well, i have read many people have the same issue and gm themselves told us they knew about it when the engine was replaced the first time. they extended special coverage for excessive oil consumption on many of the equinoxes to 10 yrs/100k mi, but neglected to include our vehicle. gm refuses to check our engine serial number separate from our vin to verify that it is one of the defective products. gm needs to know that the problem extends farther than they thought, which is easily seen by searching online and looking at cases like ours. gm neglected to properly fix our issue the first time and this is potentially a major hazard for many people, they need to actually extend coverage on all vehicles affected. the engine burned 60% of the oil between oil changes, it clatters and soon will stop working.

My engine has been burning oil ever since i bought it about 4 years ago. it is a 2010 chevy equinox, which i bought used from a dealership. there is a class action lawsuit that was just accepted for reimbursement of cost associated with previous repair, due to the oil burning. although, i never had to pay to get it repaired since i was putting in oil about every week to two weeks since i found the issue. i'm very upset, because the issue should be a recall for everybody who has the issue to be able to get it repaired. since the oil issue is known and a class lawsuit has been filed and accepted, it should go for all vehicles, not just the vehicles people didn't look after and let them brake. the oil burning issue is very bad and it will cost me a lot of money to get fixed. therefore, it should be a recall and i should be allowed to get the issue fixed for free as it is a known problem for this vehicle.

While operating vehicle, (anywhere between idling to travelling 40 mph) the "service stabilitrak" message will appear on console between tachometer and speedometer. driving the vehicle any further will cause the instrument panel glitch, and all readings will go to zero (tach, speed, temp) while engine is still running. further operation will create sudden jerks in the transmission until the transmission goes to third gear and remains until engine is cut off. after cutting off engine and trying to restart, the instrument panel will go directly to "service stabilitrak" message and the engine won't turn over. have had the vehicle towed three times on separate occasions after not starting back up. have already spent over $2k is different diagnosis and repair/replace actions. considering that this website has 8 separate service bulletins concerning the "service stabilitrak" and 11 different complaints concerning "stabilitrak", this is an ongoing and common issue. i have a workmate that had a gmc (same generation, not sure of year) that had similar issues with "service stabilitrak" to the point of dumping the vehicle to get something more reliable.

My equinox engine light came up while driving in the highway, i hear a noise in the engine every time i accelerate, and the truck would shake a bit, put the suv in the machine and got a p0300 code for misfire, the coils and sparkplugs where loose and out of place for the second time in less than seven months.

Having the oil changed and noted that the oil was extremely low. took it in again for service in june 2016 and the oil was already low again and had not be driven far. mileage is at 64,000 miles. there is not a leak. happens even when sitting still.

Purchased car from toyota of rockwall in jan 2015. in july 2015 started having issues with shift not coming out of park, sometimes the problem would not duplicate, so i had to take it back to the shop multiple times. initially took car to stonebriar chevy (frisco, tx), who replaced the battery. the issue occurred again - i took it to ntb (rockwall, tx) & had various parts related to shifter assembly replaced. i had it there a few times with the same issue. i then took it to britain chevy (greenville, tx) 3 times between nov & dec 2015 - the car showed error codes p0326, p0324 & p0014. the following repairs were made, some covered under special coverage warranties: replaced transmission shifter assembly, engine balance chain, tensioner, gasket, pump, pipe, seal gasket kit, 3 bolts (various part #s), filter, gm dexosi 5w30, timing chain kit, camshaft actuator & loose connection at ecm. again in may 2016 had issues. took car to lakeside chevy (rockwall, tx) & received the following error codes: p0324, p0016 & p0017. it was determined that there were oil consumption issues (covered under spec cvg warranty), but that a bolt unaffiliated with a spec cvg warranty or any bolts replaced in the past had come lose, causing timing chain to hit engine over and over, resulting in engine being ruined and needing full replacement (quoted $6k for this). i have been arguing that this should be covered under spec cvg warranty #14159 or 12313 since it is related to timing chain, etc., but was told the bolt that came lose is not one that is listed under any spec cvg warranties. i believe this is most definitely a safety issue. the check engine light did not come on until the week i took it back in the shop in may, yet the mechanics have told me the bolt has been loose and chain hitting my engine for quite a bit longer than that.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that while attempting to start the vehicle using the key remote, it failed to start. the failure recurred twice. the vehicle was not diagnosed. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was not provided. the approximate failure mileage was 63,000.

My wife and children were driving our chevrolet equinox on the highway coming off of an on ramp when the vehicle started to make some noise. trying to turn left, the vehicle stopped in the middle of the intersection, mind you, in heavier traffic, and would not move. obviously this is a safety issue itself, what if this would have happened on the highway and caused a fatal accident?? thankful this was not the outcome, but stuck in the middle of an intersection cause safety issues itself. i ovi checked the issue through a local repair auto parts store, transmission issues. i had a second opinion placed with a local repair shop and was told that the transmission was blown out. our transmission was destroyed. i was told that in this model, a plate that gm used for this vehicles transmission breaks and destroys the transmission. being stranded in the middle of the highway is a safety issue, being stuck in the middle of an intersection is a safety issue,

Excessive oil consumption. brought the car to a chevy dealer and returned with full oil, at ~55000 miles. one month later, after putting on ~700 miles, the oil level marker could merely detect any oil left. brought it back to the dealer, and was told it took them 1qt oil to top-off (i feel it should be more than that), while they admit even 1qt/700 miles oil consumption is not normal. they've started the monitoring, and we'll see what's happening.

Oil consumption, everytime i get an oil change the car has burnt nearly half the oil that was put in the car in 3000 miles. also my check engine light keeps coming on for a bad catalytic converter and i know several other equinox owners that have the same issue.

Was out running errands with our two children and the vehicle was running a little rough - almost died twice while at stoplights. had previously voiced multiple concerns to dealership on oil consumption recall. no low oil notification on vehicle would ever display, and was told by the dealership that this model was not equipped with a notification (which we thought was very odd). finally got vehicle home and as i pulled into driveway the vehicle died; went to restart and made awful sound wouldn't turn over. was completely out of oil with over 1,500+ miles left until recommended oil change. talked to gm cs and turns out our vehicle should be giving a computer notification on the dashboard for low oil. thankful it didn't happen during my errands since it could have died at a busy intersection or on the interstate and we would have been put in danger.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. while driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle jerked, stalled, and the check engine warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 83,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that the vehicle experienced a loss of power, the vehicle would not shift into gear while being operated, and the abs warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the transmission, abs sensor, and motor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired however the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was contacted however no further assistance was offered. the failure mileage was approximately 115,656.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that exhaust fumes entered the vehicle through the air conditioner vents. the failure occurred without warning. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the exhaust manifold was fractured and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 90,000. updated 09/23/16*lj updated 10/05/16.*jb

Where to begin...in 2015 i purchased this 2010 equinox from a chevy dealer and 2 months later started experiencing problems w/ the stabilitrak. i have thousands of dollars paying for this to be fixed with no solutoins to this day!! it os now a daily occurrence and comes on multiple times while driving every time i am behind the wheel now. in addition, now the engine is completely shutting off while driving it and i must coast to the side if the road!!!! with the hundreds of thousands of complaints your company has received regarding this problem over the last few years, i am guessing your company is waiting for a life to be taken! i have had this happen to me multiple times on the highway passing a car or semi and it kicks in and i have to pray that as i slow down with no control i can make it to the right lane and then on to the shoulder with out getting hit or worse!!! there are even mornings where i go out to start my car and...either it doesn't start at all w/ no sound, it starts with the stabilitrak already on or it clicks on as soon as i put it in reverse. i am keeping all my receipts together and my family knows where they are in case anything should happen to me due to the lack of chevrolet assistance for thousands of people dealing w/ the same issues!!!! yes i have a warranty but was told that is not covered and i have already had a new transmission put in, throttle body replaced, wires replaced, etc... and still no solution and this is not the first time i have filed a complaint here. i will never recommend a chevy to anyone and will share my experience with as many people as possible!

On multiple occasions, when the car was stationary, it would not shift out of park after starting the car and releasing emergency brake. i would just hear this clicking noise near the key ignition when i tried to move it out of park. i've had the car in and out of service about 6 times from july - dec 2015 because of this. first few times, the mechanics could not get the problem to duplicate. one of those times, they thought the battery caused it and said it needed to be replaced anyway bc it was weak - i did that. another time, they said it was bc some stuff had spilled down in there where the shifter cables were, so they cleaned and rewired it. still another time they said a computer part was sending weak signals, so they replaced that. the shifter assembly was replaced once, then again bc one of the parts was deemed defective. this last visit (dec 2015), they said it was bad wiring from the ecm that caused it. some of these service/diagnostic fees & the cost of towing have been waived or reimbursed, others have no. none of the issues specifically "related" to the shifter assembly were covered under warranty or recall. so as you can imagine, i have been out at least $500-700 over these last several months. huge inconveniences - being stuck at work at the end of the day or at home as i'm ready to leave for work. i am planning to trade this car in within the next month or two. if it hadn't been for all of this, i would've loved the car. i was satisfied with everything else about it.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. while driving at various speeds, the vehicle stalled and failed to restart. the engine warning light illuminated. the failure recurred on numerous occasions. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 86,000.

My drivers seat was changed twice in six month, still doesn't work the passenger air bag light comes if noting is in the seat. the oil comsumption is ungodly and now i have anoil leak on the passenger side of my engine and i need to add 2 quarts of oil daily. ecoboost went out within a year of my ownership. car has been in the shop several times for oil leak and it is stii persistent.

Incident occurred: june 30, 2015 a tractor trailer was passing another vehicle and proceeded to come into the left lane. i had cruise control engaged. the truck came over admittedly at a speed that was going slower than the rate of speed i had on my cruise control. when i went to apply the brake, i felt as though my car was not decelerating enough based on the pressure i was applying to the brake. i quick checked my side mirror- i was unable to go around the driver because a car was next to me and i checked my rearview mirror to ensure i was not going to be rear-ended as well- knowing i was too close and going to collide with the truck driver at this point. i applied as much pressure as i could to the brakes to decelerate but unfortunately still collided with the driver. my air bags did not deploy- despite this, it allowed me to see my mirrors immediately following the incident so that i could safely coast to the shoulder of the pa turnpike without disrupting traffic. my 2 concerns: was braking faulty when cruise control is engaged? also- my air bags did not deploy.

Car would not stay running when it was first started in the morning after sitting all night. we would start it up and try to back out of the garage and it would die, restarted and it would die, this would happen 3/4 times before the engine would keep running. after it kept running it would then only run at a very slow speed for about 3 blocks and then it would just take off and would run and start like it should until the next morning and then we went thru the same thing again. this car was in the shop twice for this problem. the first time they said we had too much alcohol in the gas which was bs. the second time they said they didn't know how to fix it and had to call the tac. it turns out that they had to replace o2 sensor and both timing chain actuators and all gaskets. this car had a timing chain and tensner recall on it in august 2014. i feel that this problem stems from the recall on the timing issues. i don't have any thing to upload but you can get the records from the dealer.

2010 chevrolet equinox. consumer writes in regards to fuel control system recall notice and several vehicle issues. *smd the consumer stated a warning light illuminated. the dealer reprogrammed a module. the second time the consumer returned to the dealer, the timing chain was replaced. also, the engine was noisy. in september 2014, the consumer received a letter about excessive oil consumption. in november 2014, the consumer received a letter about the possibility of the steering locking up. the condenser had a small pin hole, that caused fluid to leak out. the compressor was replaced. *jb

Vehicle ran rough, noise from engine noted . several times to dealer for repair. 77k miles engine would not start. "timing "jumped 4 notches, no compression in cylinders" per dealer . dealer wanted $3500 to "diagnose" damage not including repair, installed used motor at cost of $4000. no help from dealer or gm as vehicle was 5 months out of "5 year warranty".

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 25 mph, the vehicle stalled and the check engine warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the software needed to be reset. the vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. in addition, the contact stated that the front driver and the passenger side windows failed to close. the the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 63,980.

Traction control malfunction and made the car go into low power mode, had to pull over on the highway, restart it many time to go again. *tr

There is a current recall in place for the timing chain and fuel pump in this vehicle. both items were replaced at 30,00 mile and now 107,000 miles later the same problem is occurring and both of these items need to be replaced again and instead of gm recognizing the recall they say that they can only provide $300.00 towards the repair cost of the vehicle. gm says we have exceed the mileage for the repairs to be done at no cost and want to charge us $2200.00 for the repair of the vehicle. the recall number for this is (12313). the poc at jack evans dealership in front royal va is [xxx]. the only assistance the dealership worked out with gm towards the repair of the vehicle was $300.00. gm needs to recognize that not every single vehicle is going to be the same and not all vehicles are going to have problems at exactly the same mileage, if there was a problem with the parts in the vehicle and you replaced those parts when the vehicle only had 30,000 miles on it and the problem is occurring again 107,000 miles later then there is obviously still a problem. the recall was put in place for a reason and they need to do the right thing and honor that recall instead of trying to give us rebates and dealer incentives of up to $3000.00 to be used towards the purchase of a brand new vehicle, which is what they are trying to do at this point in time. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that the system overheat light illuminated on the instrument panel, which indicated that the vehicle overheated. the thermostat indicator indicated that the coolant system was operating normally. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but the cause of the failure could not be determined. the dealer replaced the water pump, thermostat, timing chain, fuel lines, and updated the software; however, the repairs did not correct the failure. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 80,000.

While driving down the road lost all power reduced power and stability control light came on. just checked oil on december 17 it was full and checked it on december 19 and it didn't have any oil in it and it is not leaking anywhere on the car. *tr

Gm did a recall on the rings and pistons of my car. i purchased this vehicle new and told the dealership on numerous occasions that it was using too much oil. they checked it and told me that everything was fine, to keep adding oil and that the car "just uses oil." now at 98,000 miles later they do a recall and say there is a problem and they only fixed the rings and pistons, which is only part of the problem. my car is using 1 - 1.5 quarts of oil every 1000 miles. common sense and mechanics tell me that if a vehicle is using that much oil where is all the exhaust and emissions going, it is going through the catalytic converter. since i am using three to four times the amount of oil that should be used, then the catalytic converter is working harder. now my check engine light is on and after having it tested, gm has informed me that i need a new catalytic converter because it is clogged up. it makes since that it would be clogged up since i am burning this excessive amount of oil due to the faulty rings and pistons that gm has already agreed was wrong in the first place. now, they are wanting to charge me $1100.00 for a new catalytic converter. this should have been checked and replaced during the recall. they tell me my car has too many miles and their warranty covers the converter for 80,000 miles. i understand i am over this mark and also understand that i brought this matter to their attention on numerous occasions before the 80,000 mile mark. i should not be held responsible for the $1100.00 to replace the catalytic converter since the problem originated from the rings and pistons. please help. thank you. *tr

While driving on the nj turnpike southbound from nj to va my 2010 chevy equinox suddenly stopped accelerating! after barely avoiding several collisions, the stabilitrac light came on, the service engine light came on and then the reduced engine power notification came on. the vehicle would not accelerate over 30mph, threatened to stall repeatedly and was vibrating violently. luckily i was only about an hour into my trip (the temperature outside was below 30 degrees and i had my (xxx) year old and (xxx) year old in the car!) and was able to slowly drive the car home and have it towed the next day. i had to replace the throttle body and the intake and exhaust celenoid actuators at a total cost of $644.05 *js parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Car battery constant drains, car wont start upon hot/cold weather...bcm might be the cause-body control module computer, car cuts off while driving, has stalled, nocking sound when ac/heater is on ,burning smell.battery replaced and not the problem, alt also checked and is working good. have to constantly charge the battery to charge the computer to get the car to start. *tr

Excess oil consumption 1 quart per 1000 miles 2010 equinix are well known for excessive oil consumption

My cars ch ed ck engine light has popped on and off since i git the car in july and the tpms gauge has been on since the first week i got the vehicle. it was raining and my car began to start initiating thetraction control but my car started to skid and the check engine light came on. i drove for 15 minutes between 35-55 mph and i received an error message about power failure on the car. my car immediately shut down i didn't need an oil change left and i just replenished oil but when i checked it was empty. i put more oil in the car and scheduled an oil change. the technician checked my tires and did the oil change and the car appeared to work fine. 3 days letter i had the same issue. and instead of one tire none of my tires are being read on the car and when traction control is on it rides rough. 5oday alone my car shut off 7 times while i was stuck 9j a major highway. a mechanic in my building looked at my car and said that there is oil leaking onto the engine block as well. *tr

I am losing a lot of oil within the 3000 miles before i change it. my car is losing power it stalls it runs very loudly and it knocks a little. i put at least 12 quarts of oil every 3000 miles and it's not leaking because i checked the top and the bottom of the motor and there is no sign of oil anywhere not even out of my tail pipe. *tr

Engine is consuming an inordinate amount of oil, possibly due to warped cyclinders. i told the dealer it was leaking oil or something because i couldn't keep enough oil in it, they said there was no leak and that i need to change the oil more often. terrible rattle has existed since shortly after purchasing the vehicle new in 2010. timing chain had to be replaced once and the rattle went away for a short time. other mechanics are saying cylinders become oval and then it consumes oil and if you don't notice it the timing chain breaks the plastic guides due to improper lubrication.

While at red light, i went to pull out and car just turned off. and had to put it in park and turn car off and tried to restart the car and it wouldn't start and had to do it again. *js

When the vehicle starts in the morning for the first 15-20 seconds you could hear a load rattling noise then the noise goes away. i had change the oil from synthetic to regular 5w30 because when i drained the crank case the only thing i had left was 1.5 qt, im trying with the regular oil to see what it does .i hear that many equinox owners have had the same problem with oil consumption. i would like to reported ,maybe its a problem among these vehicles owners. *tr

I started the vehicle the stabilitrac and engine light came on. the car would not move forward more than a half mile per hour. had to have it towed to dealer. i bought this vehicle 1 month ago pre owned from the dealer. it had gone thru the general motors 117 point inspection test before i bought it... i only put on 1000 miles since i purchased it. *js
