On average, the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 81 383 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2010 Chevrolet Equinox

Our 2010 chevy equinox was working fine. last week we came to a stop at a stop sign... heard a bang noise and it started to idle rough, and shut off at stop sign ( hard to even know...since radio still playing). also sounds like a thrashing machine.... check engine light came on and has since gone off and back on and back off. what is the best correction for this safety issue. continues to shut off at stop signs. ????

Oil consumption. i've spend 2k in repairs over this past year for oil consumptions problems and it still consume an excessive amount of oil, to the point i have to add a quart a week to stop the oil from extremely running low.

Oil consumption. i have to put oil in it every two week because oil is empty. it does not leak and the vehicle is part of a class action lawsuit 4 oil consumption issues. i called chevrolet they only want to cover half the parts to repair which will cost me an additional $3,000. i have already replaced the timing chain at $1,800 and the transmission at another $3,700.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. while driving various speeds, the vehicle independently decelerated and shut off without warning. the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence where it was diagnosed by an independent mechanic that the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact called a local dealer (chevrolet of homewood, 18033 halsted st, homewood, il 60430) and was informed that he would have to pay for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that it was up to the dealer to repair the vehicle. the failure mileage was approximately 117,535.

My vehicle is experiencing the same issues as reported in gm service bulletin 14882. i was told my vin was not covered under that's bulletin. i have spent $800 so far on repairs. recently all the oil was lost through blown seal due to pressure build up in the engine. excess moisture was found in air box near pcv hose.

Engine loses power abruptly, power train light and check engine light on

Bulletin #14882. my car is at 124,532 miles when the rear main seal blew out due to freezing of the pcv valve. after many times of this car being in the shop getting repaired, they weren't willing to take any of the responsibility and fix it, due to the miles of the car being barely over their limit. i feel they should have done something to help me out.

Low oil, mixed with antifreeze. engine light came on. good to my mechanic, ended replacing the catalytic converters, water pum, spark plugs, battery.

Pcv system failure with a blown rear main seal. while driving down the highway the rear main seal blew to a known faulty design by gm. this caused the vehicle to loose all power & oil on the highway. tried to get the vehicle to the side of the road, almost hitting over cars due to loss of power. this was later determined investigated and found to be a known pcv system failure. gm is aware of the many of reports of the 2.4 motor & the problems. this is all covered under gm bulltein 14882: special coverage adjustment ' plugged pcv orifice in intake manifold ' 2010-2014 buick chevrolet gmc

On december 22nd, 2017 as my husband and i were traveling to our hometown from fort bragg, north carolina, our vehicle unexpectedly lost acceleration while driving on the highway at night. this was not only very scary, but also very dangerous. imagine other vehicles whizzing by at 80mph at night and your car only wants to go a fourth of that. the screen read, 'reduced engine power'. we were fortunate that no one ran into the back of our vehicle, before we could pull off on to the shoulder. the car was towed the remainder of the drive and then taken to flow chevrolet mid january 2018. while at this dealership, we were given the following diagnosis codes, p0016 crankshaft position not plausible, p0089 fuel pressure regulator performance, p228d fuel pressure reg 1 performance, ebcm v0100-71 lost communication. the man helping us recommended that the pistons and rings/ timing chains be replaced for $5629.67 or an engine swap for $9250.76. come to find out, this is a well-known issue with the 2010 chevrolet equinox and car forums all over the internet have complained about the exact same issues. how is there not a recall for this? this is highly unsafe!

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. while driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle shut off without warning. the vehicle restarted after several attempts. the failure recurred several times. the vehicle was taken to mike shaw buick gmc (1313 motor city drive, colorado springs, co 80906) where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered no assistance. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 63,000.

Timing chain, water pump, tensioner all went bad, causing further internal problems. came to a stop and would not re-start. chevrolet required an "authorized" diagnosis. chevrolet had previously extended warranties on this motor to 120,000 miles due to this problem. i had 124,600, so chevrolet refused to help. cost me over $2400 and the car still won't run. per internet searches, this is a very common problem for the 4-cyl eco tech engine. (i believe canada required a recall on this engine!)

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. the contact had the vehicle towed to the dealer (kern chevrolet buick gmc, 218 s walnut st, celina, oh 45822) where it was diagnosed that the timing chain failed and the bottom half of the engine was gone. the dealer gave the contact a loaner vehicle and replaced the engine for free since the mileage was less than 100,000. the contact requested the warranty on the new motor, but was informed that the warranty paperwork had to remain in the files. the contact could not receive the warranty or a copy of the warranty. at 42,000 miles later, the new engine failed due to the timing chain. the contact asked about the warranty and was informed that there was no warranty on the new engine. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the first engine was replaced free of charge, but the second engine would have to be paid for out of pocket. the manufacturer was contacted a second time and the contact was informed that there was a three year warranty on the new engine. when the manufacturer was contacted a third time at the dealer, the contact was informed of the same thing as when she called them initially. the contact stated that there was a pcv valve recall. since ohio was not a cold state, the manufacturer stated that the recall would not be honored. the vehicle remained at the dealer since the second week of december 2017. the dealer provided a loaner vehicle, which was still in use by the contact. the failure mileage was 42,000. *tt *tr

Each year, when outside temperatures are cold, the check engine light comes on and the engine loses power either while driving or idle, and the vehicle runs very rough.

2010 chevrolet equinox 2.4l engine is burning oil. i took this to the deal and was pushed away saying i had oil leak. this is not true. i took my 2010 chevrolet equinox to second dealer and they advised the was metal shavings and the oil consumption was useless because the of the shavings. now gm will not replace the engine, i provided the requested documents so that the deal could make the exception to replace the engine but was denied. every time i go to start the engine and drive off it stalls.

I was on the way to the store with my two children i pulled out of my drive way and the car didnt want to pull. i let off the gas and pushed the gas again i started thinking make it just had some trash or something cause the car did fine. i got to the store and pulled in the parking lot the car wouldn't move at all. i had it towed my the chevy place and they said that it was the inner transmission seeing that it has had otber transmission issue might want to take a look that the whole unit of the transmission. thanks

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. while driving various speeds, the engine indicator illuminated. the contact stated that the vehicle was not performing properly and felt sluggish. an independent mechanic replaced the transmission and the timing chain. trapp chevrolet in houma, louisiana was made aware of the failure. the manufacturer was also made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. when the vehicle was started, the contact heard an abnormal rumbling noise for five minutes. while driving various speeds, an abnormal knocking noise was heard. there were no warning indicators illuminated during the failures. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was observed that there was no oil in the vehicle; however, the failure was not identified. the dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 130,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. while driving approximately 55 mph, the engine started to hesitate. the contact pulled over in a parking lot to check the oil, and noticed there was no oil in the reservoir. the contact also stated that three quarts of oil were added to the vehicle one month before. the contact had experienced the oil consumption issue for approximately a year. the vehicle was taken to the dealer (duteau chevrolet in lincoln, nebraska) and was informed that the warranty was extended by the manufacturer however, the vin did not qualify. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 101,391.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that the vehicle experienced hesitation and jerking. the contact also stated that the vehicle experienced a lack of engine power. the vehicle was towed to the residence. the vehicle was then towed to a transmission specialist where it was diagnosed that the transmission had malfunctioned and needed to be replaced. the dealer or manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 94,143. *ln

Let me start off by saying that i am one of many having the same trouble with my 2010 chevy equinox. on jan. 21, 2015 i was hit by a young driver totaling my 2002 s10 crew cab. i feel this truck saved my life. in need of a safe vehicle i found myself at bowman chevrolet purchasing a certified 2010 chevy equinox with less than 41000 miles. at that time i received 24 months of oil changes/routine maintenance plus road side assistance and bumper to bumper for 12months. this vehicle seemed great till my first oil change and maintenance. in less than 3 months i took it in for service they said it couldn't be serviced. i apparently bought a canadian vehicle. called bowman about the issue and was told to bring it back to them ( over an hr from home) at this time i mentioned a few things i felt were issues (my car would run on after shut off, would roll backwards in drive and shifting would pause between gears). about a month later i got my car back, new dashboard with a few scratches and a good chip in the windshield. wasn't happy but they said all was good. until the next time i had to take it in, still having run ons when i shut off the car and shifting problems along with a few minor things( i was told was not covered but should have been still under what i was promised by the 12 months bumper to bumper) over the next 21 months of my warranties i continued to have many issues with my car. never fully fixed each time i took it in and being told many times they wont do the recalls because its on a canadian car not my now american car. on july 13, 2017 driving on 96 in construction and rush hr traffic with my grandson the transmission was losing gears at one point the car stopped abruptly. we barely made it home! drove it to dealer next morning only had 1st gear. apparently this is a known problem. help us all!

Excessive oil consumption. gm has issued service bulletins and extended the coverage out to 120,000 miles, dealer keeps requiring oil consumption tests and validated it was outside of specifications and still not fixing issue claiming "gm" is the one requiring the testing

Came out of the grocery store about 9pm on 6-28-17, and the car won't start. had it towed to a local mechanic who evaluated that the timing chain on the ecotec engine has basically misaliigned and shredded parts in it's path, destroying the engine. i have done some research online and see many complaints of this happening and this video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeeuyunuhgs i chatted online with chevrolet customer service who says that they cannot do anything since i had not bought the car "certified" at a gm dealership. the estimate for these repairs is valued at more than half of what the car is financed for. i'm feeling like i have a giant piece of junk on my hands. luckily it didn't seize up while driving. so far my out of pocket expense inclues $93.00 for the diagnosis and an additional $44.00 to have it towed to the dealer's mechanic for them to do an evaluation 7-5-17. probably looking at $5,000 to $7,000 of dollars to repair and get back on the road. certainly can't afford that. it practically adds up to be the price of buying a new one.

Timing chian expanded causing check engine light on and fog on front winshield in the morning and at times during the day

Takata recall while driving and approaching a stop sign on a city street in town, the car started aggressively shaking and several lights turned on - service stabilitrack, engine power reduced mode and the check engine light- thankfully we were able to safely pull off the road as the car would not exceed 25mph. after the first time we took it in and they flushed the throttle body. less than 2 moths later the exact same problem occurred while driving in town. took it back in and they completely replaced the throttle body. here we are a few months later and now the car will not even start with the same icons appearing on the dash! if this were to happen on the freeway at 65 mph and it kick me down to 25 mph that is a serious accident waiting to happen.

I have a 2010 chevy equinox and i just got it out of the shop for the 2nd time in 3 weeks within that time it burned through all the oil that was in the engine from a brand new oil change. we have had problems with extremely high oil consumption. we had the pistons & rings replaced a couple years ago but it did not fix the problem at all. we regularly change our oil but at this rate we need to put oil in it weekly. the mechanic told us that our engine is about to go out because of burning of the oil so fast. this needs to be recalled and now. changing just the pistons and rings will not fix it. chevrolet owes this year of equinox a new, solid engine that doesnt excessively burn oil at an alarming rate. we have been set up to fail by financing this vehicle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. while driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle lost power. the vehicle was towed to the antelope valley chevrolet dealer in lancaster, ca where it was diagnosed that the fuel injection needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000. the vin was not available.

Car looses power while driving

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that while driving at 58 mph, the vehicle began to lose power as well as making a grinding and banging noise inside the motor. the contact pulled the vehicle to the side of the road when the vehicle completely lost power. the contact had the vehicle towed to the dealer. the dealer diagnosed that the guards around the timing chain detached causing the motor fail and the cadillac converters to melt. the entire motor was replaced. the contact stated that five days after having the vehicle repaired, the failure recurred. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer. the vehicle had not been repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to nhtsa. the approximate failure mileage was 138,742.

While driving on city streets, my gas pedal became unresponsive. the car began to slow down. unable to keep my speed, i was unable to make a stoplight and had to stop. while my foot was on the brakes, the rpm for my vehicle were steadily at 6-7000. as the light turned green, i put my foot on the gas pedal, received a jolt as if the car was accelerating, but was slowly making my way up to 20 mph. as the time took near 30 seconds to make the climb on a flat road to 20 mph, i decided for my safety to hit my emergency flashers. around that time, the check engine light came on. i pulled to a side street and hit 'onstar'. they were able to give me two codes that appeared. p0776 and p0700. while talking to onstar, my car was in park and again the engine was pushing 7000 rpms. i was barely able to make it to my house as the car was barely able to maintain it's speed. the next morning i was curious if i was able get the car out of my driveway or if it could move in a forward motion. i was forced to push my car out of my driveway as i could not go in reverse at all and again i noticed that the car could barely move forward. after having my car returned from specialist in transmissions, they gave me pictures of what they found. which i included five with the complaint. the issue after talking to the dealership is a very common problem and by reading those two codes were able to instruct me the parts that broke inside the transmission without opening it up or checking the transmission fluid.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. while driving approximately 35 mph, the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the accelerator pedal was depressed and the vehicle started to decelerate with the engine rpms at 6,000 when the contact removed his foot from the accelerator pedal. in addition, the vehicle failed to reverse and the "d" on the instrument panel was blinking. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact also stated that onstar produced codes p0776 and p0700. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 79,300. ..updated 08/30/17 *bf *cn

Takata recall my suv keep turning off every time i make a stop on a red light or a stop sign or even when i am in traffic. i don't know what to do anymore i send it to every shop to try to fix some don't know the problem or others don't want to even try to fix it i even send it to cheney dealers and they think it was something else they change that part but still has the same problem i been spending a lot of money on this suv that i just don't want to bother anymore. please try to help me out. the bad think too is that i am still paying for this car and i asked the financial worker to help me and they don't care. we keep searching online what to do and i'm reading that these cars are recalls so please try to help me out. thank you

Oil consumption.6 months ago called antelope valley chevrolet 1160 motor lane, lancaster,ca about oil consumption. i noticed no oil was visible on the engine oil dip stick. the service advisor stated make sure to fill it up and watch it no need to bring it in at this time. on march 15, 2017 the vehicle popped an engine code for both knock sensors and performance of the sensors. i then made an appointment that evening for the following morning. after making the appointment i checked the engine oil and no oil was present at that time again. i added 2.5 quarts of oil to make the drive to dealership the next morning. i also researched and found that there was an open recall for oil consumption. the dealer diagnosed my vehicle by doing an oil change and found metal flakes in the oil filter. the engine oil light never came on during the last six months.the dealership stated the engine needed to be replaced at a price of $8,000. as a military member who has moved 6 times in last 3 years it is really hard to keep receipts. the dealership stated without maintenance records they will not do anything or provide any assistance. the service advisor said that we can have you talk to sales department and see what they can do for you. on monday march 20, 2017 i went into the dealership wanting to talk with service manager robert. he stated they couldn't do anything without service record and i finally convinced him to submit it for warranty work. that evening i called corporate and spoke with customer care. they took my claim and called me back on monday march 27, 2017. corporate stated they could not do anything or provide any assistance. today, march 29, 2017 service advisor called me and stated they would not do any warranty work. i then stated i will pick my vehicle up and will be filing an official complaint. general motors is not backing their product up of this know issue

Multiple trips to the dealer. solenoid problem, air bag, engine light on, broken chain, fuel pump injector, leaking sun roof, as of 3/6/2017 i need a transmission. my car was purchased in 2010, i only have 31,000 miles on it. iv'e visited the dealer jan, feb, and march of 2017. i feel i should be compensated with a new car!!!! jan, f car

Cam chain broke second time

Car only has 89k miles and it's having issues when it's accelerating and switching gears. it also stalls often while in motion. also having an issue with my defroster controller. seems like this is a recall in the same year and model but my vin doesn't qualify

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. while driving 75 mph, the engine reduce power indicator illuminated and the vehicle began to shake violently. the engine stalled, but was able to restart. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the throttle body failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact also stated that the vehicle had been previously repaired due to several recalls. the recall specifics were not provided. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was approximately 96,136.

Four times within the last two months the stabile symbol, check engine symbol, and reduced engine power alert have come on. the first time happened when i was parking, the 2nd time when i let the car warm up, the 3rd time when i was doing 60mph on the expressway and the 4th time when i had gone about 5 blocks on a city street. each time i was driving, the car slowed down and became hard to control. i was able to get off the road and cut off the engine. after sitting for about 5 minutes, the reduced power alert went off and i was able to drive. the check engine light stayed on. after about a day the check engine light went out. the car will run ok for a day or two and then start to act up again. i was told that it probably has something to do with the gas medal, however the dealer hasn't been able to detect a code. i am concerned that i will be on the highway going at a high speed when it happens and not be able to get out of the way of other traffic. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. while stationary, the vehicle would not start when prompted. it was diagnosed that the vehicle needed a new engine. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 72,000.

Timing chain recalled by mfg fixed, excessive oil consumption, timing chain failure again, fixed again $2700.00, continued excessive oil consumption complete engine failure at 98,000 miles.

Excessive oil consumption. every 1,000 miles or less i need to add at least 1 quart of oil. no oil leak. hubler chevrolet in indianapolis has investigated the issue. they also indicated no leak and that the vehicle is consuming excessive oil. they recommend piston and ring placement. i declined service at that time as there is an active recall on 2010 equinox for this issue. however, my vin is not part of this recall. i spoke with a representative from gm and they suggested i contact nhtsa to see if my car can be considered part of the recall since i am having the same problem and recommended repairs as other 2010 equinox. hubler chevrolet service manager recommended i check the oil 500 miles to ensure adequate oil and add if necessary. attached is the recall paperwork i found for the 2010 chevy equinox, which does not apply to my vehicle. also attached is the receipt with diagnostic and recommended repair from the service department. please consider my request to add my vehicle and any other 2010 chevy equinox with the same problem to the active recall to fix the excessive oil consumption issue. while i stay on top of checking the oil, i am very concerned that my engine will lock up when i am driving. i truly feel unsafe in my vehicle. thank you.

I experienced sudden deceleration while driving on the interstate in winter conditions. many near accidents occurred while i struggled to maintain control and exit the interstate as soon as possible. loud knocking from the engine and a strong gas smell immediately followed. the engine stalled several times when i came to a complete stop, such as intersections as i went straight to a nearby chevrolet dealer. i was informed the rear main seal blew out causing a sudden loss of oil pressure. they also said this happened due to high positive pressure in the crankcase due to a frozen or blocked pcv valve. gm is aware of the issue as stated in the general motors service bulletin 14882. however, gm says my vin does not apply in this case. due to the severity of the issue, i felt it was important to let someone know so other people with similar vehicles could be notified of the extreme hazard. *tr

2010 chevrolet equinox all of a sudden lost traction control and drop speed to 15 miles per hour. error light came on stating "engine power reduction" and then "service ". along with these error messages the icon for engine and stabilitrak came on after car lost most of its pwlower and traction. it was a cold night christmas 2016 but not as cold as other cities as we live in phoenix, az. thankfully i was in our neighborhood when my [xxx] daughter and i lost power instead of being on the freeway but this is a major safety issue with these cars. i've recently read many complaints from equinox owners who've dealt with this same issue. the dealership said it was the throttle body and solenoid valves and charged me $850.00 for a repair that i truly feel needs to be under a recall given the safety issue of losing power and traction while driving without warning!!! *tr parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

Constant transmission issues, rebuilt motor and still having issues doesn't change gears or will make constant putt putt noises like its going to quit, goes through quarts of oil constantly, no leaks found but adding large amounts weekly, heating/ac system doesn't turn on all the time i have to turn it off and on and it eventually works. stabilitrak keeps turning on with check engine light the cars power then gets turned down all the way or off, i have to turn the car off and turn it back on to get back to normal. very dangerous car stopping with traffic all around. nothing but headaches.

My vehicle starts own its own and know i have the engine light on and the air conditioning turns on own its own!!!! please help.

Wasn't informed about the excessive oil consumption. letter never made it to my house. excessive oil consumption has caused the catalytic converter to fail prematurely . chevy issued a special warranty but it disqualifies you if you have more 120k miles. chevy has known about this issues since 2011 but intentionally waited to issue special bulletin because they wanted to disqualify as many people as possible.. the service rep told me since i didn't pay the previous repair (which were manufacturer defects) that i am basically responsible for the repairs. this car has had over 4 major repairs that were due to manufacturer defects but the rep is saying that since i'm the original owner they won't assist me. i told her the issue is with the car, it has nothing to do with the ownership which is why you're issuing all the special warranties. none of the major repairs that were done on this car are listed in the vehicle history report on carfax or on the gm owner site where it states that such reports will appear. i got the service report from the dealership when i saw the sales associate with it. i told the rep had the information about the excessive oil consumption been listed on my chevy profile i would have had the issue fixed thus saving the catalytic converter. she still claimed it was sent. the catalytic converters need to be recalled without exception. honda replaced my cracked my engine block no questions asked! they have honored ever warranty i've ever had and fixed every manufacturer defect without drama. i cannot say that about chevy. they have caused me nothing but stress over issues they created and have gotten away with it and today i just learned that my car now has a fuel pump recall.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the timing belt would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 149,500. the vin was not available.

We purchased this vehicle in dec 2014 at 42,000 miles as a certified pre owned $15000 cash. the vehicle started experiencing engine trouble in july 2016 it we were in the process of of diagnostics for excess oil consumption and engine repair. after the care broke down on a major highway with my children in the backseat. aug 2016 the car stalls again on the highway with my children in it. the transmission has failed. we havent even owned the vehicle for 2 years. it only has 76,000 miles on it. but gm says its past the 5 year warranty mark by 8 months so they wont help. i am not the only person having these issues with this make and model. there are stories all over the internet where people have stalled on highways from this issue! it needs to ge recalled. this is a death trap. we could have been seriously injured ow worse. unfortunately thats what it takes now a days for a company to care.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet equinox. while the vehicle was being operated, an abnormal noise emitted from the engine compartment. the contact pulled over and restarted the vehicle; however, there was a lack of power. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the timing chain fractured and the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 53,000. updated 01/25/17*lj *tr
