Takata recall: i bought my chevy equinox in august of 2017, since taking it home it has had a lurching problem when driving or when stopped at a red light. it lurches forward and backwards like a bull trying to throw you off. i put new brakes on every 3 months because my brakes do not work even when brand new, and when i press the brake the car won't stop, or the brake pulses and vibrates. the cars gear shift sometimes gets stuck in drive when trying to put it in park. when trying to drive and the gas is pressed you hear a grinding, and the gas vibrates. i've had to abs sensor replaced 4x, o2 sensor 3x new brakes every 3 months, new tires every 6 months, regular oil changes, it's had it's valves replaced, it's had new brake lines, new shocks, regular alignments, it's had a new catalytic converter put in. the cars rpm spikes to 8000 when doing 30 miles an hour through a small town. the wheel vibrates when on a highway abs light never comes off. t/c turns off anytime i make a turn. check engine light is i swear permantly on. . i've been told this can be a transmission and gear shift problem, but that all 3 of my regular mechanics call this problem the ghost problem, because they can't figure it out and always tell me to not drive it that it's not safe to drive but it's my only vehicle and i am 5 months pregnant and cannot afford a new car right now. this car is unsafe and needs to be evaluated.
100000k miles and the transmission locks up huge problems with wheel bearings and problems with abs system

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that there was water entering the map light. the contact also heard an abnormal noise in the rear of the vehicle, the suspension was unstable pertaining to the control arm, and the axle was leaking fluid without warning. the steering wheel also made a grinding noise when turned, the automatic transmision hesitated, the throttle was light, and it was difficult to reverse upon the change in weather. the vehicle was not repaired and the dealer was notified of the various failures. the manufacturer was notified of the failures and provided no remedy. the vin was unknown. the approximate failure mileage was 201,765.
Take key out and engine does not shut off. *tr
A loud pop occurred during operation of the vehicle at approximately 40 mph and then a noticeable change in the suspension was felt. in testing the vehicles ability to travel to a repair center the brake peddle would drop to the floor as if it lost compression. this occurred after carefully observing the troublesome behavior of the turning capabilities and suspension of the tires. it seemed to make an awful grinding noise when making right turns but not left turns. previously before these problems arose, the apparent issue of the electrical system and its functioning parts(power doors, windows etc.) were malfunctioning, including the radio. at the initial purchase of the car the only seemingly harmless thing to mind was the sticking of the ignition switch at times. to date, the car is not able to reverse from parking position, and has a new issue of locking up totally and not able to engage forward. the car is not able to be driven and when searching for cheaper insurance (byvin) we were immediately, under no uncertain terms alerted that the car was unfit to be insured. this was told and sent in written form to us from a reputable insurance agency. *tr
I went to get my inspection sticker and received an safety/emissions recall sheet of paper indicating that i might have a problem with this defect number: 2529, engine family:5gmxv02.2025, emission problem: some engine control modules or power train control modules have potentially damaged integrated circuits. this may cause the egr system to malfunction or cause the fuel pump to turn off or the turbo system to malfunction. this is exactly what a mechanic has told me about the egr system. if you could please let me know what i can do about this issue as soon as possible and if it is covered or if i can get it repaired at no cost to me. i have only owned this vehicle for 1 year since march 1, 2014. i'm the second owner. *tr
In the past the transmission has quit when driving on the freeway, now the steering locks up when driving. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

I had trouble inserting the key in to the ignition. after inserted i drove the car to the store. when i turned off the car the key would not come out of the ignition. after wiggling the key around it finally came out of the ignition and the steering column locked. when i tried to put the key back in the ignition the steering column would not unlock. after several attempts the column unlocked and the key was able to be inserted and the car started. this has occurred repeatedly since the above date. *tr
Getting a very loud humming/growling sound coming from front of vehicle. starts when driving over 25 mph and gets louder the faster you drive. thinking the front rear end is going out. nothing but trouble with this vehicle. will never buy one again and don't recommend to anyone. sister also has an equinox and she has put in over $3000 to get it just to run. going to fix it fast and trade it in. chevy should recall this piece of crap. *tr
The center drive shaft bearing has failed for the second time. once at 50,000 mile and now at 100,000 miles. costly to replace 800 dollars. this bearing could cause a severe accident an injury if not know why the vehicle is vibrating. *tr chevy says not their problem for parts to wear out. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that the key was difficult to remove from the ignition intermittently. the key was stuck in the ignition on more than one occasion. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing and to be repaired. the dealer stated that the time frame had expired to receive the recall repair for nhtsa campaign id number: 04v302000 (power train). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 150,000.
I had to have my battery replaced today. my battery had to be replaced due to the ignition switch that is not completely turned off when i put the car in park. for a year or so i have been able to drive down the road and my cars key has been removable from the ignition switch. i have asked about the ignition switch before to my dealership over the years with no resolve. since the recall of other gm models during the same year my car was made recently i have read over these issues and my equinox is having the same issue. i do not have to put my car in park for the key to be taken out of the ignition switch. now my battery is being compromised due to it not completely being able to shut off. *tr

I was driving my 2005 equinox lx with my two grandchildren when they noticed a smell of exhaust gases in the rear passenger compartment. this was with the heating system on and in its normal configuration. after stopping i checked the exhaust system for leaks and could not identify any immediately with a visual inspection. i opened the hood and noticed the pipe connecting the egr valve to the exhaust manifold was disconnected and emitting exhaust gas into the engine compartment and intake area. it appears that the weld on the pipe boss was cracked. this seems to have occurred prematurely. after calling the dealership for a new pipe i was told by the parts department the pipe was no longer available and i would have to obtain a kit which included the pipe and a new egr valve. my question was this ever considered for a recall item as the kit is $360.00. *tr
My center bearings were replaced about 3yrs ago thought it was a fluke though i had heard from many people that this was an ongoing problem. clunking began under my car again so i knew what it was. took it to the mechanic and the center bearings were broke again and the bearings and the back of the driveshaft also. the rear u joint was also broken. this is ridiculous as well as dangerous. i take good care of my car no running over logs in the woods or things of that nature how can this keep happening unless it is a defect or flaw in design.this time with the clunking my anti lock brakes were going off every time i stopped too.mechanic had a hard time getting the parts to replace apparently everyone needs them but chevy sees no problem with this. *tr
This vehicle is a joke, i already put money down on it and have only had it a little over 2 weeks. 5 days it was actually in my possession but not able to drive it much. the rest of the time it was at the car lots mechanic, it dies driving down the road, it is hard to start and sometimes won't start after 10 tries, it is shifting hard and not when it is necessary( down shifting when speeding up) and it has a horrible noise coming from the front driver side which the mechanic can't figure out. not to mention that the fuel pump will need to be replaced thanks to the fuel gauge not working properly... i feel like i just made a very costly mistake( i still owe 6900 on this vehicle... ) chevy should be ashamed of this vehicle and should be fixing these problems. *tr
Carrier bearing on 2005 equinox totally gone. mechanic discovered that the driveshaft is bent which most likely caused the carrier bearing to wear down. mechanic said it is very difficult to bend the driveshaft unless the vehicle is in a major accident. i am the original owner of vehicle and it has never been in an accident. i have heard a thumping noise in the rear of vehicle when slowing down for the past 6 yrs. several shops and dealership were unable to diagnose the issue. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that the when attempting to start the vehicle, the key would become resistant to being inserted into the ignition. the contact took the vehicle to a mechanic and was told that the ignition switch needed to be replaced. the mechanic also stated that they felt the failure was related to nhtsa recall campaign id number: 04v302 (power train). the manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle was not included in the recall campaign. the failure mileage was 166,000 and the current mileage was 167,000. *tr
I heard a rattling coming from under the car, so i took it my repair shop. he said it was a broken carrier bearing, and ordered the part. said it would be $550 for parts and labor. the next day he called and said he wouldn't be able to replace just the one part, but that the entire drive shaft might have to be replaced, for around $1200. very consistent with other owners' issue. *tr
Infrequently, without warning, this vehicle's transmission will abruptly down shift. the shift will happen as the vehicle slows and violently slows the vehicle immediately. infrequently this happens as i slow to turn to enter the on ramp for interstate driving. in the most recent case, the roadway surface was very slippery. i was just beginning a right turn and the transmission shifted violently. the rear of the vehicle began to swing to the right as the front tires immediately dropped their speed. this vehicle is not equipped with stability, traction control or anytime of anti skid accessories/options. the slippery road surface greatly magnified the effect of the unexpected downshift and resulting immediate drop in speed. until this event, the down shifting was so infrequent, i was only remotely concerned about it. my concern up until this event was more focused mechanical and not control ability. i quickly made an appointment with the gm dealer where the car was purchased. they assessed the problem and called me to advise, there is a transmission software update which gm recommends for this transmission. it is not certain it will fix the problem, but most likely it will. i was charged $180. to diagnose and reprogram. when i picked up the car i expressed my concern. gm apparently knows there is a program error which needs an update, and i am suppose to pay to fix the known problem? yet there is no safety bulletin for this known problem? i strongly pointed out this is known problem is a safety issue which can become a serious accident under the right surface conditions. the service adviser agreed with me, however stated to the effect, this software update is the repair gm authorizes. i feel this software update needs to be mandatory for older vehicles operated in slippery roadway conditions, even a service bulletin would help warn unsuspecting drivers. *tr
Car will not start unless i change the rear brake fuse. when i change it, it continues to blow out.. *tr
Ignition switch won't turn unless you wiggle it sometimes for 10 minutes. dealer says needs ignition cylinder replaced i have 5 keys none work. will cost $300-$400 to replace. i have had many vehicles 15 _ 25 years old and have never had this issue. it seems chevy will only be held accountable if someone dies. i am very dissatisfied with their accountability. i have read many of the same complaints but no help. *tr

I received my vehicle back on 8.2.11 it had been in the repair shop since 5.14.11. the repair man replaced and reprogrammed the transmission modulator. he noted that it did "act up" for him, however it had not acted up since his last attempt at fixing it. it was raining when i picked up my car. in the first 10 miles i noticed the steering pulled to the left a couple of times. after i hit dry road this did not occur. after about 30-60 miles of driving the vehicle since getting it back, the speedometer started failing and the vehicle while going 55mph starts to feel like it is going to cease to operate and stutters. it is also noted that it feels like it is not going to automatically shift to the appropriate gear. the vehicle is going to chevrolet dealership on friday 8.5.11. *kb
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that the keys would not turnover in the ignition to start the vehicle. the contact would attempt to start the vehicle by wiggling the keys in the ignition for approximately twenty minutes. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was contacted who advised that there was a recall for the failure (nhtsa campaign id number: 04v302000, power train: automatic transmission) but the contacts vin was not included in the recall. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 88,000.

The center bearing on the drive shaft wore out back in april 2011 at 83,000 miles. it was replaced by a gmc dealership. the same component wore out again and required replacing in september 2011. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that the gear shifter failed. the contact stated that she shifted into park and as she exited the vehicle, the vehicle began to roll away. the contact was knocked to the ground by the vehicle and sustained bruising to the ribs. the vehicle did not crash into anything. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection or repairs. the manufacturer was notified but provided no assistance. the failure mileage was 92,000.
Shaking in vehicle similar to that of an unbalanced tire. took to dealer for another issue just had them check to see what this "new" shaking was and they told me the center carrier bearing was "shot" and needed replaced. the service manager advised that this required the replacement of the entire drive shaft assembly at a cost of around $1200 plus labor. the safety issues here are enormous. if the drive shaft lets loose the vehicle could flip, roll, or any number of things. why has a recall not been done? i see many complaints about this exact issue. it is not common for a carrier bearing to fail especially so often and early. i have 77,000 miles on this 2005 equinox, way too soon for such issues. i am thoroughly disgusted with gm. i will never buy gm again. *tr
At 60 mph my 2005 chevrolet equinox was rattling. we brought this to our mechanic and he informed us that the carrier bearing at the u-joint was failing. i find this unacceptable in a vehicle that has only 56,000 miles on it. cost to repair was $550.00. *tr
The drive shaft failed which greatly reduced power to the wheels. the car became less unresponsive on the road (replacement not covered by dealer warranty) and could not move through minimum snow amounts going up hills on roadways. vehicle is used for commuting to work (35 miles/day) on paved roads.
Since 2008, i have experienced the following problems with brakes grinding & squeaking even after getting them repaired (front and rear brakes / rotors replaced). a couple of days after rear brakes replaced the abs & tc lights were on. i had to have sensors replaced. i have also experienced car not starting and sounding like it is flooding, after letting car sit for a few minutes it then starts. there is also a popping noise that comes from the back of car after starting the engine. when changing shift from park to drive car occasionally jerks & shoots forward. when pressing the gas, the car takes a few moments then jerks forward. now i'm being told that the transmission is going bad & i have to pay $350 for a diagnostic test to determine if they can rebuild the transmission or have to replace it, which will cost between $1800 to $3000. there is a 2005 chevy equinox power train: automatic transaxle recall but my car is not covered. note: vehicle has been serviced regularly according to the maintenance schedule timetable provided by the manufacturer. *tr

Not sure of exact first date clunking sounds under car took it in and the bearings that hold the drive shaft were broken. mechanic said never saw something like that on a car without any other damage and that when he checked with local dealer was told that it was happening a lot. i reported to chevy also and yet they said there were no problems. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that the vehicle would abnormally jump forward when attempting to accelerate. the dealer advised that the transmission had failed and repairs were made to the transmission. three months later, the failure recurred and the vehicle would not accelerate over 30 mph. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was awaiting repairs. in addition, the contact stated that the air bag was damaged during the first repair. the contact believed that the vehicle was extremely unsafe to drive. the failure mileage was 72,861.
2005 equinox bought used in 2007at 35000 miles-i was confused why someone would trade such a new car in-brakes continue to wear down-ignition had to be replaced, car would just die going down the highway-car almost feels like brakes are being applied when i take my foot off of the gas-tires that i bought 1 year ago are wearing out- *tr
