Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Going down the road and my car started to vibrate had it checked and i was told it was the center support bearing . it felt like i had a tire out of balance but it was the bearing. talked with alot of people on the internet and they are having the same trouble. *tr

My equinox was taken to dealer who informed me that the drive shaft was being held in place by one rusty piece of metal. he told me that if i were to hit a bump it would dislodge and would cause a serious accident and harm to car. not good news for a mother. he is replacing this part. *tr

The center carrier bearing has pulled away from the axel on my 2005 chevrolet equinox. the repair shop (tire center) told me that this is very common and have seen it on this model many times. a chevy mechanic told me it is a known issue. there is a ton of information on the internet about this problem. i was told the vehicle is not safe to drive.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that when it rained, the spare tire holder became filled with water and the passenger rear and driver left side floor became wet. the contact called the manufacturer and was advised to take the vehicle to the dealership. the failure mileage was approximately 60,000. the current mileage was approximately 82,000. updated 8/18/10 *cn the consumer stated the battery died and the vehicle slammed to a stop due to possible transmission problems. updated 08/23/10

The center bearing on my driveshaft broke. i bought the car used but in good condition. i did not hit anything with my vehicle to cause the bearing to break. i simply made a turn and that is when i noticed the noise and that it was driving horribly. as i traveled a few more feet down the road it just got worse. i took it into a chevy dealer and i am currently awaiting on repair. *cn

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet equinox. while approaching a stop light and depressing the brake pedal at speeds under 25 mph, the brake pedal fell into the floorboard and the vehicle continued to accelerate into an intersection. the brakes would not engage. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where they found the transmission module was defective. repairs were made under the contacts factory warranty. on a separate occasion, while utilizing the cruise control mechanism, he tapped on the brake pedal to shut off the cruise control and it would not deactivate. he continued to depress the brake pedal and moments later, the cruise disengaged. there were no repairs made to the cruise control mechanism. there were no recalls on his vehicle. the failure and current mileages were 50,000.

2005 chevy equinox drive shaft bearing wore down, vehicle never shook. there was a dragging noise i took it to the mechanic, he drove it, it ran smooth, he looked underneath and was able to move it 6 inches in all directions. now have to replace the whole drive shaft. *tr

Carrier bearings. *tr

Carrier bearing is bad on my suv. currently, it only makes an annoying noise while the vehicle is in motion. other reports on the internet noted them falling off or needing replacement. internet reports there was a manufacturing defect which has caused a national backorder. this appears to be too common of a problem to not indicate a recall. *tr

I have a 2005 equinox with 94000 miles that started to make a loud noise. took it to the local repair shop they found the center carrier bearing needs to be replaced, however, there are none available! i can't drive the car because too dangerous now and can't get a part for weeks or months? *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 equinox. he stated that the front wheel bearings were replaced. he heard a peculiar noise in the vehicle after the wheel bearings were replaced. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, and a technician concluded that the struts needed to be replaced. the part was on back order and no repairs were made. the failure mileage was 57,000. the current mileage was 67,000. updated 11/12/09 *cn the wheel bearing and driveshaft were replaced as well. updated 11/16/09

9/ 09vibrating..ticking noise noticed car taken to dealer..told drive shaft is cracked, car undrivable, driveshaft on backorder..date of release is unknown at this time 10/08 brake rotors found to be warped/defective..replaced under warranty. *tr

My wife told me that there was a vibration around 55mph (2005 chevy equinox). i crawled under the car and notice some type of support on the drive shaft was broken. i found out that it is called the center support bearing. i called all kinds of dealerships all over the united states and canada and found out that there eare few of them out there. and those that are out there the dealers are not releasing. the car has almost 56000 miles on it and we can not get the part. gm says there is nothing they can do about. i have found that there are many others that are having the same problem. i find it kind of odd that there is absolutely nothing that can be done. what are people suppose to do go buy another car because they can't drive the one they have because gm will not supply the part. as of right now there is no fix. *tr

In my 2005 chevrolet equinox awd, the drive shaft center support bearing is blown with only 39,000 miles. symptoms included a shaking felt in the floorboard at 50mph and above that feels similar to an unbalanced wheel. i had the wheels balanced and the mechanic noticed the problem with the drive shaft bearing support. the vehicle cannot be driven without the support due to the risk of damaging the drive shaft possibly leading to an accident, according to the service staff. the dealer reports that the part is on "national backorder" and that he has "12 people already on the list waiting." a quick search on the internet shows many people with a similar problem. there appears to be no after-market part and the dealer was not forthcoming with timing of availability of the part. seems there is significant demand for the defective part warranting investigation. thank you for your time. *tr

I own a 2005 chevy equinox: the car started shaking while my daughter was driving. see stop at a near by service station to have it looked at. it was determined to be the center support carrier bearing, which holds the driveshaft in place. we contacted several chevy dealers for the part and were informed that this particular carrier bearing is out of stock, on back order and none were available in the country. they put us on a list to have on ordered. i was told not to expect it until september or october. this car is now immobilized. apparently, there are several chevy equinox's with the same problem. this appears to be a serious safety concern, which needs to be recalled. i would like to see a recall put into effect immediately. thank you for your help. *tr

My 2005 chevrolet equinox needs a new drive shaft carrier bearing. the chevrolet dealership which is to perform the repair stated that this bearing is on national back order and could take between 3 weeks to 3 months for a replacement bearing. the dealership, the extended warranty company and gm will not authorize a loaner car. my understanding is that this bearing is used on many types of gm vehicles and there was a manufacturing defect which lead to the part shortage. my concern is that someone will not realize that damage to the drive shaft is occurring ' possibly creating a serious safety issue at higher speeds. any help would be greatly appreciated. *tr

I have a 2005 chevrolet equinox with 48k miles on it. recently i began hearing and feeling a thumping below me. i took it to the local dealer and learned the drive shaft center bearing is shot. dealer told me the car should not be driven as the drive shaft could fall at any time causing the vehicle to flip or roll over. if that is not bad enough he also told me the part is unavailable and is on national back order. we've been waiting over a week now and the dealer is saying he doesn't see any chance of having the part in the next week or two! i see another similar complaint here and according to the sales person who sold the car, the part has been redesigned by gm due to numerous problems with it. clearly this is a safety issue that should be investigated further to determine if gm is working to resolve the problem with an appropriate sense of urgency. *tr

My 2005 chevy equinox began shaking when driving greater than 50 mph. the repair shop found it was the drive shaft. the carrier bearing was detached and needed replaced. i am still waiting for this part to arrive so that my car can be repaired. how this is not a recall is beyond me. i researched and found greater than 15-20 complaints on line stating the same thing for their 2005 equinox. please help me. i am getting no where with chevy and they don't want to cover the part either. *tr

The driveline was replaced on my 2005 chevrolet equinox at 36,00 miles under normal driving conditions. the mechanic stated that the bearing that held the joint together had corroded and the driveline would need to be replaced this was at a gm certified service center. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that the driveshaft bearings failed and the vehicle cannot be driven. the dealer stated that the parts for the repair were on a national back order and they did not know when they would arrive. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 34,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet equinox. he has to exert great force during brake application to stop the vehicle. a mechanic concluded that the hub assembly needed to be replaced. he then added that an oil leak was present. no repairs were made. the failure mileage was unknown. the current mileage was 108,953.

I have had my 2005 chevy equinox, been the first and only owner, since i have purchased it, if i ran through even the smallest mudpuddle i would hear noises coming from underneath the vehicle. now 4 years later the noises are none stop. i took it to a mechanic and he told me the wheel bearing on both sides were bad, just to find out after spending hundreds of dollars in repair bills, the carrier bearing that is on the rear drive shaft is missing. it has fallen out completely and all that remains is the rubber flanges. i have contacted every dealer i can think of and received a part # 25775162 for the bearing and have been told that the part is on national backorder and gm is saying they will not release it to non vip until november, december time frame. had i have been driving the car with the vibration of the driveshaft i could have seriously hurt myself or others. now i am paying for a vehicle, no one has the part that i need to fix it, and i am out of answers. if this is a common problem in which every dealer i have spoken to says it is with the equinox, why is nothing being done? instead everyone with that model year saturn and equinox with the same carrier bearing on the rear driveshaft is either wrecked the vehicle, hurt themselves or others, or allowing there vehicle to sit at a garage, shop or house with no hope of getting it fixed. i have even called gm corporate, and all they give me is we will look into this problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet equinox. while driving 40 mph, the vehicle independently steered to the extreme right. the failure caused the contact to drive through a ditch, across traffic, and through another ditch. the contact had no control of the vehicle, but did not crash the vehicle. the failure occurred twice in one day. the contact also stated that the key became stuck in the ignition. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing and the ignition and middle drive shaft carrier bearing were replaced. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 40,000. updated 10/09/14*lj updated 05/18/2015 *js

I have a 2005 automatic transaxle equinox with less than 23000 miles this vehicle shifts in gear extremely hard which at times propels you forward. it also hits high rpm before it shifts into gear. one time it hit almost 6000 rpms while driving up hill before it kicked into gear. this same vehicle has also failed to shift into gear when trying to put it into reverse from park. i received a gm bulletin from my local dealer and told this is a problem gm is aware of but will not cover to be fitted due to the government is not requiring it. does someone has to be killed from this problem before something is done. *tr

My 2005 chevrolet equinox starting making a loud grinding noise when i had just gotten off of the interstate and was applying the brakes and turning. it felt like something was locked from the middle of my car to the back of my car. i was totally caught off guard and was very shaken. i stopped and looked at my tires and to see if anything was hanging down from the car. i couldn't see anything that was obvious. it was 9:00am. i was approximately 2 miles from a chevrolet dealership so i drove there. i was scared and shaken and didn't know if this problem was going to cause me to have a wreck or possibly be stranded. when i got to the dealership, a gentleman in the service department went for a drive with me. my car didn't make the loud grinding, but only a little. he said the service department would take off all 4 wheels and check the brakes. my husband left work to pick me up as this was not going to be done before lunch. the dealership contacted me at work and said it was not the brakes, but it was probably the rear differential, but he wanted to make sure and he would call me after lunch. he asked if i had an extended warranty on the car, i said no, but this should not happen to a 3 year old vehicle that was bought brand new. he agreed. my warranty expired 5 months today, january 24th and my mileage is past the warranty by 1,424 miles. my car has 37,700 miles on it. my husband owns a 1996 chevy s10 pickup with over 200,00 miles on it and nothing this major has ever happened with his truck. i contacted general motors and spoke with a representative. he said he would build a business case document to present to gm board for review. i think gm should pay for expenses to have the dealership replace the rear differential. i made a pun comment that since this cost was around $2400 that i wanted gm to bail me out, compared to the billions they just received from american taxpayers. gm success depends customer satisfaction. again my car only has 37,700 miles on it. *tr

The carrier bearing is faulty on 2005 equinoxes. our mechanic told us this is a huge problem because it could cause the car to flip over. the major issue is that to repair the carrier bearing, they have to remove and replace the drive shaft. this has to be sent to chevrolet, and since it can only be done by them, they have a strong arm on the price. ($1200) it is evident that this is a manufacturing defect because when i began to google 'drive shaft chevy', it gave me 2005 equinox as a suggestion. the year was specific in the problem. *tr

At approx 130k miles the driveshaft failed. cost to repair $800. *tr

1. normal driving 2. loud whine was heard, took into dealer and they diagnosed the problem as a bad support bearing 3. support bearing is on a national back order and problem has not been corrected. *tr

Driving under normal conditions i've experienced two failed front wheel bearings on driver side causing vehicle to vibrate, chevy garage replaced under warranty now upon getting vehicle inspected it was discovered that carrier bushing that connects front driveshaft to rear driveshaft has failed which could cause driveshafts to fall off. car is a 2005 chevy equinox with 35,000 miles on it, i feel gm should recall these vehicles and check these problems out before drivers have a serious accident. people are not reporting these failed components because garages are fixing under warranty so it doesn't get reported to you. i feel these components are defective right from factory so there should be a recall, thank you *tr

I have a 2005 chevy equinox that has experienced multiple electrical problems. first i had ignition problems, air conditioner problems, battery being drained without cause, window control and so forth. each time i took it to the dealer for repairs and each time a repair was made. only after the warranty was out did i discover by accident that the problems were caused by a faulty wiring harness. the main dash wiring harness located in the left floor panel on the driver's side has signs of melting, and shorts with the slightest movement. the shortage causes the air conditioner to stop blowing and will cause the engine to completely die out. i have had the car evaluated by two mechanics who both stated, without knowing someone else had looked at it, that the car is a fire hazard and should be repaired immediately. i also spoke with a local body shop that has repaired at least one equinox that burned due to this same wiring harness. the repairs are currently being made at a cost of $4,000.00. i believe that this is a more wide spread problem than has been reported and hope that others with similar problems will speak out as general motors is unwilling to investigate this. i encourage new car buyers to beware of this company, as i have been sorely disappointed with their product and service. *tr the consumer also stated there was a roaring noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. she later found out there was a problem with differential after being told there was nothing in the rear to cause a noise. updated 12/04/08. *jb

2005 equinox with normal driving, mostly highway. began to hear the typical sounds of a failing bearing prior to 60,000 miles. vibration in steering, hum present when driving, uneven wear on front tires. replaced rfhub under warranty at approx. 69,000 miles. within 10,000 miles that rfhub began to fail, by the time i could get it to the dealership i had surpassed my warranty and the 12 months/12,000 warranty on the installed part via the dealership. was told that it wasn't out of the ordinary for the part to fail so quickly, which is news to me! how can a bearing fail that quickly and not be defective. was forced to pay over 500.00 to replace it. have complained numerous times about a rattle when going over bumpy roads and received the "we couldn't replicate it" response since initial complaint prior to 60,000 miles. have heard that the tierods are to blame, have mentioned it, but still deal with this rattle that goes unaccounted. also have bad electrical that "can't be replicated" at the dealership. radio and panel in dash flash at random times as if a wire were loose or shorting, loud booming thuds come from the speakers at the same time. speaker blew in door, but after warranty. regardless of numerous complaints i would have to pay out of pocket because they couldn't replicate these things when taken in to get looked at. fuel gage sticks, but either have to pay 120.00 to possibly correct it with a fuel system cleaner, or pay 700.00 to replace fuel filter. such great options. my family has worked for general motors for years, it's a shame. *tr

Equinox was on a recall previous owner received notice ,i never did, i have been pursuing this matter for over 7 years, given to the run-around by chevy can at -1800-222-1020. *tr

Problems with car began immediately (transmission, air conditioner, odometer, window motor, car shifting abruptly, and skidding on any wet service.) finally went into 20 ft skid, wheels locked, no response to steering. car hit pole. airbags did not deploy, seat belts did not lock. car totaled. *tr

numerous failures on this car. the a/c and transmission defective in the first 100 miles. the power window failed. transm. shifted on curves and would momentarily lose all control of car. complained that had no wheel drive in wet or snow. would jump sideways or skid. ,now head-on into phone pole. airbags did not deploy, seat belts did not lock. as a result, hit steering wheel and dashboard. injuries. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet equinox. the contact has been experiencing failures with his vehicle since it was purchased. the failures include the transmission and brakes. when attempting to drive in reverse, the vehicle would not shift into gear. the brakes failed and water enters the vehicle as well. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for repair, but the failure could not be corrected. the contact wants to place the vehicle in arbitration. the manufacturer called the dealer, but are having difficulty speaking to someone. the engine size and powertrain were unknown. the failure mileage was 2,400 and current mileage was 3,300.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that she was able to remove the key from the vehicle while it was in the on position. when the vehicle was in the local repair shop she mentioned the defect to the mechanic, and they informed she should check for recalls related to the problem. there is a recall for the power train: automatic transmission (nhtsa campaign id #04v302000) however the dealer stated that her vin # was not included in the recall. the failure mileage was 68,000 and current mileage was 73,776.

Vehicle(2005 equinox) always downshifts from overdrive when going downhill. this causes vehicle to suddenly speed forward requiring brake to be applied. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet equinox. the contact stated that the key will not turn in the ignition. he must go to the rear of the vehicle and give it a push in order for the key to work in the ignition. the failure occurs intermittently. when he took the vehicle to the dealer, it worked perfectly. recall # 04v302000 (power train automatic transmission) does not apply to his vin. the purchase date was unknown. the current mileage is 36,000 and failure mileage was 25,000.

I have had numerous problems with my 2005 awd chevy equinox, including the head gaskets blowing, losing acceleration on the 270/highway, ongoing acceleration problems, and other problems which still continue. i have begged for chevy to help get the car fully repaired and the customer service representatives just keep telling me to bring it into the dealer. i've tried two dealers and returned to the purchasing dealer who will only make repairs if they can pull a code - they report i am having problems with my spark plug wires - first they reattached it, and then replaced one but car still doesn't drive as it did before head gaskets blew. please, please help me - i've had my car in the shop 8 times in 4 months and the dealer and chevy will not provide me with an extended warranty - car warranty ends in 6 months or help repair properly. i am scared to drive this car and don't know what to do as they don't take my concerns seriously as the only way they diagnose is by pulling codes. *tr

Please note my 2005 chevy equinox has failed several times mechanically as i have contacted gm about this problem,i have been utterly ignored ,only letter and no action to address the problem in which this vehicle has. i have written beth kucharski at gm-300 renaissance center detroit michigan several times executive assistant, and have made over 100 inquiries and complaints to the chevy resource center for over a perio of 2 years to no avail, they have ignored and have not once came up with a equitable solution to my problem. *tr

Bought the car used with 20,000 and it was having problems a week later. passenger window would not roll up,grinding and clicking at slow turns. they replaced rotors ,clutch and suspension and the problem was solved. then came the air condition not blowing cold air and the ignition sticking on start up. the final straw was the transmission slipping and dropping into lower gears, the car will be in the shop in the morning. last chevy i will ever buy back to nissan. *jb

Carrier bearing for chey equinox: rubber seal separated from carrier mount which caused the drive shaft to slam into the plate, in turn caused the drive shaft to come apart while the auto was moving. *jb

Problem with sway bar links, replaced twice. still problem with front end as chewed up tires...replaced struts, steering shaft, brakes front& back. front end and brake problems... cost me over $3500 to this point, plus head& rear seal gaskets... *tr

Cd player broke, water soaking floor boards twice causing mold & mildew. complete loss of radiator fluid, loss of engine power while driving twice. unusual wear of tires. rubbing in steering column when turning, knocking sound when turning slowly to the right, a/c not cooling efficiently. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated there have been two incidents with the vehicle. first, while in reverse the vehicle went forward. this resulted in loss of brakes and power steering. the ignition was turned off and the emergency brake was pulled to stop the vehicle. second, while attempting to start the vehicle the engine failed. there was a clicking sound heard. the lights, power windows and radio were still operable, however the vehicle failed to start. the dealership was unable to duplicate the problem with the first incident. the second incident, they determined the battery needed to be replaced. the manufacturer has been alerted.

Dt*: the contact stated there were numerous problems with the vehicle. first, the engine would intermittently not crank. the dealer replaced the battery however, this did not correct the problem. second, while depressing the brake pedal the vehicle intermittently did not slow down. the brake pedal was pumped several times to get the brakes to activate correctly. third, the transmission revved high and intermittently did not change gears correctly while driving. fourth, the abs lamp illuminated intermittently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the abs lamp was reset. lastly, the front passenger window was rolled down and would not rise back up. the dealer replaced the window regulator and the window was repaired. the vehicle was repeatedly taken to the dealer and addressed the problems that could be duplicated and made appropriate repairs. hard start/hesitation and almost stalling. also, determined speed sensor was causing reduced power. *ak

The failure is that my 2005 chevy equinox. the on-demand all wheel drive doesn't engage. it makes a grinding noise. this has happened since i've had the vehicle. i bought it new in may 2005. i moved to montana that year and when the vehicle slips the all-wheel drive is supposed to automatically engage. it doesn't and it makes a funny noise. i've taken my vehicle in many times while it was still under warranty and no dealership could recreate the slipping due to the lack of snow or ice or water on the road. the dealerships hooked my vehicle up to a computer and no codes would ever come back as being a problem. my vehicle still makes this noise when the all-wheel drive tries to engage. i never knew there was a way to report this issue if a service department can't recreate the issue. i found this website on headline news w/ robin mead. great reporting!! *tr

Dt: the contact stated vehicle lost power while driving, it did not stall. it restarted after multiple attempts. the vehicle was taken to the dealership and they replaced the park/neutral switch. the vehicle had the problem two more times. also, there was vibration when reversing. the dealership has not been able to diagnose a problem ,and no further repairs have been made. *ak the transmission. updated 01/04/06. *jb
