Problems with 2012 Chevrolet Cruze SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 48 452 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2012 Chevrolet Cruze

Chevrolet cruze recall my 2012 chevrolet cruze was recalled twice, once of overheating while driving, and once for brake failure when crawling, such a parking. the dealership tried to fix these problems, but the brakes still fail, and now the uses 1 quart every week. the brake failure recently reoccurred when my spouse was parking and she hit a wall and damages the car. the dealer has since told me they do not know why the car is consuming oil, so i have elevated the issue to gm i think that the ntsb has to further monitor this problem to ascertain why the recalled items are still failing.

2012 chevrolet cruze recalled for brake failure at low speed. it was allegedly repaired at bacharodt chevrolet, pompano beach, fl. subsequently, the brakes again failed and a crash resulted against a wall at low speed in my apartment parking lot. after complaint to gm was sent to auto nation chevrolet, delray beach fl and they determined that the recalled replacement sensor for the brakes was not put on correctly by bachrodt, and that they failed again and that caused the crash, no injuries. gm picked up cost of repair in full including body damage.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet cruze. while coming to a stop at a traffic light, the brake pedal was depressed and failed to respond. the contact crashed into the rear of another vehicle. the air bags did not deploy. there were no injuries and a police report was not filed. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 37,292.

Car was recalled for replacement of vacuum pipe assemble micro switch,it was replace but starting to have problems again. the dealer says they will not replace again, i afraid my brakes will fail.

I was trying to park my 2012 chevrolet cruze car in a parking place. i turned into the parking spot and when i placed my foot on the brakes, nothing happened. i looked down at my foot and watching myself repeatedly pump the brakes. instead of stopping, my car went over the parking spot yellow curb, over a sidewalk and some grass, and i hit a parked vehicle. before i hit the vehicle, i luckily turned my wheel, causing less damage to the parked vehicle. after i hit the vehicle, my car turned back into the parking lot where it finally stopped. i am not sure if it stopped because of me repeatedly pumping the brakes, or that i finally ran out of momentum, since i had not hit the accelerator since before trying to park. my bumper is damaged, had to have car towed because i am too afraid to drive it. my 5 year old daughter was in the backseat, in her booster seat, during all of this, and i am afraid thinking of how worse it could have been, with the brakes not working. i found out after the fact that there was a recall for this year and model car for the brakes, and that recall was before i owned the car.

Was backing out of my parking spot in apartment complex, brake assist failed to engage hard to stop required a lot of [unexpected] pressure on brake pedal. almost backed into neighbors car, could have backed into a child. brakes continued to operate in similar manner until i got to the street.. issue seems to similar to chevy cruze recall for 1.4turbo

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet cruze. while driving at various speeds, the brakes malfunctioned and the brake pedal could not be depressed to stop the vehicle. the failure occurred on several different occasions, at multiple speeds, in both drive and reverse, and with the cruise control activated and deactivated. the cause of the failure was not diagnosed. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 13v36000 (service brakes), although the vehicle experienced the same failure listed in the recall. the failure mileage was 95,000.

When in reverse, several times (but randomly) the brakes are inoperable. they have to be stomped on in order to stop but sometimes do not activate and the car rolls.. only in reverse, but very scary. taking to the dealership immediately. currently at 39,000 miles - purchased in november with 22,000.

I was traveling app. 60 mph down i26 when my brakes completely malfunctioned. i came within inches of hitting a transfer truck due to the inability to brake. i've sought resolution from corporate chevy along with my local dealer who simply tested the brakes to tell me they are functioning properly. i do not feel sale in the cruze. i have constant anxiety while driving. who knows when they will malfunction again and kill me and my precious children.

I have had many issues with my brakes on my 2012 chevy cruze. sometimes it feels like i am hit from behind while stopped because the vehicle will randomly lurch forward an inch. then, the brake lights began to randomly come on when the car was not running. this caused the battery to die numerous times. eventually, the check engine light came on and the fault said the brake pedal position sensor was bad. i had that replaced. now, the brake pedal does not come all the way up when it is lightly depressed (like when slowing down just a little or canceling the cruise). this causes the brake lights to stay on. the only way to fix it is either hit the brakes hard or pull the pedal back up. i have been researching this and it appears that many people are having similar problems. tsb #pi0928/nhtsa id #10052020 discusses the "lurching". tsb #pic-5862/nhtsa id #10053904 doesn't say it's for cruzes, but appears to be the same type of problem. *tr

This is the second incident (march 2014 & february 3, 2015 resulting in the loss of the power/control while operating the vehicle, both incidents were terrifying. i purchased my certified used chevy cruze in february 2014. in march/april 2014 immediately after startup (traveling under 10 mph / approx. 60,000 miles) the car began experiencing electrical issue; the displays on the dash would flash intermittently followed by warning lights (power steering, brakes, traction control etc.) and a complete loss of power to my car while driving, no steering, no brakes etc. i filed a complaint in 2014 (nhtsa - no. 10574169 #14311:special coverage adjustment negative battery cable loose. i immediately brought my car into the dealership for servicing. ultimately, the positive and negative battery terminals were replaced and the service was covered under warranty. yesterday, february 3, 2015, i experienced a similar incident. shortly after starting my car (traveling 5mph / approx. 84,000 miles) the car began to shake violently, the check engine light turned on and again the car began experiencing similar power loss to my car while driving. my car was towed to the dealership and the cause was again identified as a negative battery terminal, a bad intake/gasket leaking and a small engine oil seep. these are some of the same issues identified with the initial incident in 2014 when these parts were replaced. this is a terrifying scenario and to have the same issues occur in such a short time period after the parts were replaced is not comforting and leaves me with fear that this could occur again, i do not want to continue to take chances with the safety of this vehicle. i hope this is taken seriously and resolved to avoid this from continuing to happen to myself and others in the same situation and to hopefully avoid this from turning into a serious and/or deadly situation. *tr

I turned my car on one morning after i just had it in the shop to get the recalls fixed on it. im seeing service stabilitrak and service traction and abs lights. i can no longer turn on or off my traction control. my brakes are now grabbing really bad and im getting a really weird feel when i have my foot in the gas and turn my wheel. my car is not the same after the recalls were done. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet cruze. the contact stated that vehicle was serviced per a manufacturer voluntary emission recall: 14801 (engine) to reprogram the engine control module. after the vehicle was repaired at john donoghue automotive (363 vinson blvd, whiteville, nc 28472 (910) 642-2400), the brake pedal became difficult to depress. the contact stated that the vehicle was taken back to the dealer for diagnostic testing and was serviced per a manufacturer recall: 12213 (brakes) where the brake vacuum micro switch was replaced. however, the brake failure recurred several months later. the vehicle was then taken back to john donoghue automotive, but the failure could not be duplicated. recently, driving 35 mph, the temperature gauge on the instrument panel increased while the air conditioner was turned on. when the air conditioner was turned off, the temperature gauge decreased. the contact also stated that the fan would remain on for several minutes after the vehicle was turned off. the contact stated that the manufacturer was made aware of the failures and advised the contact to take the vehicle to a dealer for diagnostic testing. due to the diagnostic fees, the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. the dealer was not contacted for the recent failure. the failure mileage was 57,395. ...updated 10/19/17 *bf *js

There was a recall on my 2012 chevy cruze. i got a recall notice but never did receive notice that the parts were in. however i had at the dealer having an oil change. i told him about it. it was for the brake micro switch. he said they would replace they had the part. this was on 11/14/13. i had an accident today 10/15/14. i turned into a parking place. i applied the brake but it didn't work. car jumped the curb and ended up on top of a light maker at the library where i was parking. it was accelerating instead of braking. i applied the brake but no braking only acceleration. i want to file this complainant. vin # of cruze [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

While driving on the highway, at a safe and reasonable distance from the vehicle in front of me, the vehicle in front of me braked. i stepped on my brakes, and my vehicle did not stop properly. i pressed on my brakes firmly and my vehicle continued not to brake/slow properly and my vehicle continued going forward. the vehicle in front of my stopped and my car continued to go forward, crashing into the back end of the vehicle in front of me. i pressed on my brakes and they didn't work. i was able to turn my vehicle towards the left trying to avoid crashing into the vehicle in front of me. i was able to turn my vehicle left and avoid crashing head on, but encountered severe front end damage to the right passenger side of my vehicle. all i can say is, my brakes did not work properly. i pressed on them and my vehicle did not stop like it normally does. (this vehicle is my mother's car. i have driven it in the past and brakes worked fine) *tr

Loss of brake assist at start up. occured (4) times after recall #12213 was performed by dealer. *tr

When putting the 2012 cruze in reverse the brakes would fail temporarily forcing me to push the car into park. a week later the radio start to turn on and off. at this point in time aug 7 2014 only the brakes have been fixed. *tr

Loss of power brake assist, requiring excessive force to stop vehicle. barely stopped in time to avoid collision with vehicle ahead. second incident. first incident was approximately 2-3 weeks ago when backing up in driveway. *tr

I was backing out of my garage and as i pushed on my brake pedal to slow down and maneuver out of the garage i realized the pedal would not go down and the car kept going in reverse with no way of stopping it! there was no give to the brake pedal at all, it was as if it was locked up. i rolled backward several feet while still pushing on the brake and eventually the pedal went down and the car stopped. this happened about a month ago, but i thought, at the time, i must have done something silly like hit the floorboard with my foot . i now realize this could be a real hazard to myself and others. i did have a recall on the brakes some months ago and i took my car into to have it done. this has happened twice since chevrolet fixed my recall. this is very concerning!! *tr

I was driving to my parents house and was at a place where i had to turn so i turned and my steering wheel locked up and i almost hit someone because my steering wheel wouldn't turn. this has happened several times and every time stability track pops up on my screen and my radio flickers on and off and my blinker doesn't make a sound when this happens. now my brakes are starting to act up too when i press the brakes sometimes it rocks back and fourth while i'm stopped also the car makes a funny noise while in park. *tr

On several occurrences the brakes from my 2012 chevy cruze have failed to work. this is especially true when backing up. the brake pedal gets really hard and you really need to push hard on brake pedal to slow down, vehicle will not always stop. i have noticed it the ac is running this will happen every time i back up. i have had many instances where i have almost hit other cars or objects. i am extremely worried about this because i usually have my 2 young children with me when this happens. i have taken my car into the local dealership to get this checked out. they have told me that the vacuum switch has already been replaced and there would be a $100 charge to diagnose the problem even though my vehicle is still covered by warranty. the last time i took it in they said nothing was wrong with my vehicle, even though i am still experiencing poor braking. *tr

My teenage daughter drives this car. along with a number of service issues and down time in the shop, it has been nothing short of a disappointment. she now has a braking issue that is consistent with the recall that was issued in october of 2013 (12213). she was driving the car at 15-20 mph and the brakes failed when depressed. she then had to push again, this time harder and barely missed a car in front of her, thus freaking her out completely. now she will not drive this car again as she does not feel safe. we took the car into the dealer and without any secondary notice saying that the parts are available, they had them in house... really? does this take a fatality for g.m to do the right thing and be on top of their business? updated 11/24/2014 *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet cruze. while driving various low speeds, the brakes did not engage when the brake pedal was depressed. after several attempts, the brakes engaged when the contact removed her foot from the brake pedal. highpoint auto in cadillac, michigan was made aware of the failure and stated that the vin was not included in an unknown recall for this issue. the dealer stated that the power vacuum assembly was the affected part. the contact stated that the dealer could not duplicate the failure on more than one occasion prior to discovering that the power vacuum assembly was faulty. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue and stated the vin did not qualify under the recall due to the date of manufacture, and because the vehicle exceeded the three year 36,000 mile warranty. the failure mileage was 79,000.

As i was backing out of parking spot the brake pedal went to the floor increasing the time and distance to come to a complete stop.vehicle was towed to dealership where they determined it was a faulty brake microswitch (gm part # 13460776)that was already replaced under gm recall #12213 on march 20,2014.the dealership replaced the switch again and claim the brakes were now "working as designed". *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet cruze. the contact stated that the brake failed while reversing. there was no power assist when the brake pedal was applied. the failure continued intermittently for two months since the vehicle repaired under nhtsa campaign id number 13v360000( service brakes, hydraulic). the contact had not experienced any failures before then. the manufacturer was not made aware of the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 22,815.

The brake lights would randomly come on and stay on when car was off and sitting still. i replaced the brake pedal position sensor and it seemed to stop. now, the brake pedal doesn't come back up all of the way after applying the brakes. this keeps the brake light on and the brakes slightly applied. the only way to get it all the way up is to pull it from behind with your foot. this seems to be part of the brake pushrod and brake assist issue they are having, but haven't done a recall. *tr

Bought vehicle from carmax first week of march 2014, 3 weeks later was first time i drove in snow and the the brakes did not work at all. called carmax and though the warranty was was over they agreed to repait because of a brake recall. then a couple weeks later there was a leak and ford had to replace a coolant pump. the car never ran the same. the car putters and has horrible acceleration and i have contacted ford and carmax dealership and coorp for help at the same time all the cruzes were taken off the lots and were no longer allowed to be sold because of all the recalls and they were deemed unsafe to drive. all i asked carmax for was to take this vehicle back and let me pick out a different car. i am a single mom with a teenage daughter an i am afraid to let her drive this car, there have been several deaths attributed to the chevy cruzes. i have left several voicemails with gm my case # is c7269752 with first responder..what does that mean anyway? the gm at carmax in tinley park argued with me for 15 minutes about who if i spoke to him once or twice instead of dealing with the real issue, the sold me, a single mother a car with bad brakes! i almost went into down into a 6 lane expressway when the brakes didnt work! i would have been killed. its been a couple months now and no one has followed up at all. the snow will soon begin and i am scared to death to drive. please can some one help. *tr

Similar issue to the previous brake recall to which repair was completed on this vehicle months prior to these incidents. the brake peddle on the car would become much harder than anticipated multiple times, mostly when first starting the vehicle or reversing from a parking spot, had several near miss accidents at low speeds, over the course of several months. the dealership claimed that it had nothing to do with the recall that replaced the microswitch in the power brake vacuum pipe assembly. rather they replaced the brake vacuum boost hose assembly, claiming that was where the problem originated from and had nothing at all to do with the microswitch even though the recall was for very similar problem. *tr

Car shuts down and it can not be restarted,(no dome light, no on start) no power anywhere..can't get keys out of ignition, going down the road, steering service light come on and off, radio display shuts down and restarts, gauges turn on and off..dealership has replaced battery, generator and it is still doing the same thing. currently at dealership again.!....updated 07/31/14 *bf it was determined the ground wire on the battery was broke. which caused the vehicle to stall, shutting down all the gauges. there have been no problems, since it was replaced. updated 09/23/14

I backed out of a parking space, applied the brakes and the pedal was extremely firm with no brakes at all, then i pumped the brakes, pedal slowly goes to the floor, another pump and braking is working again. this has happened several times, but now happening with more frequency. it also has happened on multiple times while backing out of garage onto a flat surface. brakes correct themselves after incident. i picked up my grand-daughters from day care, and was exiting the parking lot on an incline driveway and when i applied the brakes, i had to push with all my strength to get the car to stop. brakes pedal was extremely firm. i almost hit a pedestrian on the sidewalk. appointment with my local dealership tomorrow to examine car. i cannot identify exact situation when this issue occurs. very nervous about having granddaughter in my car and just driving it in general, if the brakes don't work properly. *jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet cruze. the contact stated that while driving in reverse at approximately 2 mph, the brake pedal was depressed but was unresponsive. the emergency brake was utilized and additional force was applied to the brake pedal in order to stop the vehicle. the failure recurred intermittently. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, who informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 13v360000 (service brakes, hydraulic). the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 41,538.

While pulling into parking space crawling into position the brakes failed and the car vibrated and lunged forward crashing into a brick wall. the brake pedal went all the way to the floor the car then began to vibrate then accelerate forward hitting brick wall. i believe that the turbo charge engaged because of the vacuum boost failed causing the turbo to engage. filed complaint with gm no luck said it was driver error. needless to say we are repairing the car then trading in. i have contacted local media can't seem to get any help. we have been loyal chevy owners for over 20years never again. i think the public needs to be warned before someone gets killed. if someone was walking across the front of the car they would have died. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet cruze. the contact stated that while driving 30 mph, she applied the brakes and the vehicle began to skid, crashing into the rear of another vehicle. the vehicle was destroyed. the contact was not injured and a police report was not filed. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure and current mileage was 8,800.

I own a 2012 chevrolet cruze ltz. i have owned the vehicle since it was new in march 2012. recently, the following problem has started to occur with some frequency. while backup up at approximately 5 mph, when the brakes are applied, the vehicle continues to roll. after pushing the pedal several times, the vehicle stopped. this has happened at least a dozen times over the past six weeks. the brakes function fine when driving forward. this problem usually occurs when the vehicle has been parked in a parking space for at least several minutes, or even longer such as overnight. today, i brought the vehicle back to the dealer. i was unable to repeat the braking problem. the service person said they would research any recent bulletins and call me back. *tr

Upon backing down driveway, it was evident that brake booster pump pressure was lost. it took an extraordinary amount of physical effort to push the brake pedal adequately enough to get vehicle to stop. upon switching from reverse to drive, pedal pressure immediately returned to normal. we have not been notified that our 2012 chevrolet cruze eco is included in recent brake recall. *tr

Driver was traveling approx. 15-20 mph when traffic stopped in front of her. driver was at a safe distance behind the vehicle in front of her. however, after applying the brakes the car did not stop and hit the vehicle in front of her. the driver could not figure out why the crash happened as she applied the brakes and the car felt like it wouldn't stop. not only did the vehicle not stop but it also had extensive front end damage without any airbag deployment. both issues are very concerning to the driver. the vehicle has since been repaired but still feels like the brakes are not functioning like they should. *tr
