We have classified the 92 complaints from 2012 Chevrolet Cruze about STEERING into the following categories.
While driving in the city at night, the vehicle completely shut off, including the engine and all electrical systems without any warnings. this caused all lights to turn off, loss of power steering, power to brakes, and little to control to the vehicle. luckily, the vehicle behind me noticed and tailed me to a stop with their warning lights. i then proceeded to open the engine with a flashlight to discover that the battery was still properly connected (6 months old) with no frays or corrosion to the connectors or wiring. after about 5 minutes attempting to find a tow truck company the vehicle electrical system came back on with no intervention. i turned the ignition switch and the vehicle started with no issues and no engine lights on. i drove it the rest of the way home with no issues. when i got home i checked all the fuses and all were operable. the obd scanner found no codes. i am mid 30s 190ibs and fairly strong, i could only imagine if this happened in an intersection or during busy hours on the highway, i wouldn't be sitting here reporting this issue. i found numerous similar complaints on blogs concerning this model. i assume not many have reported properly since there is no recall issued for the electrical system.
My son was driving by himself when he hit a pole. after the accident he said he could not move the steering wheel to avoid the pole. he said it stuck.
2012 cruze lt. the third turbo was installed 2 days before extended warranty expired. it has 56668 miles now. i spent 4 hours putting glue putty in the cracks on the bottom intake manifold, to plenum junction corners of cylinders 2 and 4 because of the gm plastic [xxx], curing the low boost and lean mixture codes at idle, on easter. the first month i had the car the transmission would start in first skip second gear rev up then chirp the tires until it warmed up, and was fixed by a program change to a lesser version and now at the higher mileage it waits before it engages first at all. another neat thing is to turn left at 5mph hard and feel the car do a jig to the right for an instant before continuing on with the turn. lastly, the water pump was replaced along with a cracked water outlet but not the rotted recirculation overflow hose that broke at 4 am to my fishing hole in september. i can say that the 2017 cruze must be better because the dumdums paid by the gm insurance company to change oil put more new oil in the motor without draining it first. no serious issues for a whole week i might be able to drive it by may it's been 5 months since then. fyi the dealership who performed this fancy work is not in riverton either.
Hello, my 2012 chevy cruze ltz's key fob isn't being detected by my vehicle. i've looked it up and asked around and either nobody's heard of the issue or don't know what to do other than take it to a mechanic. this doesn't happen all the time, but it's painstaking when i can't even use the key fob one minute and then the next it works fine. the vehicle has been stationary since this problem has occured.
My cars over heating signal comes on and tells me to shut off the car all the time while driving, also the power steering locks up while turning.
While breaking, using the blinker, turning, or just driving the car will loose power, slow the car down, the radio looses power, and my service stablitky track, service power steering, along with traction control, anti-breaking lights, and a few other light will all come back on. it will do this randomly while driving, it seems to do it more frequently when coming to a stop or accelerating. i had this serviced back in february of 2017 and the dealership told me i had acid from my battery leaking into the positive cable, so i had all the battery and battery wires replaced. this took care of the problem until a few weeks ago. this is happening more and more often and the problem is becoming worse. this is a persistent problem with the chevy cruzes from the research i have done and chevy seems to be doing nothing about it.
Chevrolet cruze 2012 delayed steering when turning, then sluggish would not go past first gear. i was driving on city street noticed difficulty turning and slowness so stopped at nearest gas station. got vehicle towed to dealer and diagnosed with transmission failure. this was sudden, always kept up with regular maintenance, oil changes & tune ups! this should not happen to a car barely 5 years old car and well maintained!
Car wont turn off even with key off lights stay on too other times car just turns off while still on drive but gm calms no recalls !
When trying to start my car it sounds like wants to turn over but it does't ,everything reset on my dashboard, after waiting for a while it starts back up
Radio is turning on and off. stabilitytrak control light comes on power steering give out and brakes
Power steering failed while in motion. the cost of the repair is $1,900.00 on a $16,000 vehicle that is less than 5 years old
The stability track control and service traction control messages have both happened to me now a few times while driving down city/country roads and down the highway. the first time i had the service traction control was yesterday. (8/02/2016) it's scary because the radio resets and the power steering goes out. i have a [xxx] daughter and she's terrified as well. i wish they would figure this out already. i called the dealer once and like most people write online about this issue they didn't know what it could be and they didn't have a car i could use to go back and forth to work while they checked it out so i haven't taken to the dealer yet. the issue comes and goes. it could go away for months but always comes back. i keep checking online to see if they finally found a fix for this issue and i still haven't found anything. so i'm assuming once someone dies in a bad accident or numerous people do then maybe they will take it more seriously? i'm a single mom and i can't afford to not have a car or have a problem that i have to pay lots of $ to fix when this obviously needs to be a recall when this many people are having the issue and it affects your steering!?!?!?! help pls?!?!?!

Recall 14311 but dealer does not do anything about it,my car have done this few times already but last couple of times it was really scary because i lost total control over the vehicle including steering and braking the car just show a sing on the dash and radio goes of as well as the rest of the vehicle electrical parts, almost causing a crash due to this issue, i was driving about 35mph and 40mph when this happen, also i notice the it happens when i use my turn signals and when i press up or down on the windows
On several occasions my vehicle has lost power steering service. i have almost crashed into a metro rail and into another vehicle because i am unable to turn my wheel. on another occasion, i was about to park and the car turned off on me; the key was locked into the ignition and i couldn't turn it, the doors locked and nothing worked. i was stuck inside until after about 5 minutes, the car unlocked everything and the ecu turned back on. i've had to take it to the dealership twice for this problem and they have told me it's covered under a "special service" but these incidents happened almost a year apart. i do not believe the car is fixed. also, the service stabilitrak and other lights flash on and off and so do my radio.
While driving the power steering shuts off, radio blinks on and off, and the brakes get spongy making it hard to drive and stop. i have had it in the shop and the mechanics were unable to find an problem.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet cruze. while driving at an unknown speed, the power steering warning lights illuminated and the headlamps turned off without warning. the contact experienced several electrical issues with the vehicle, including the key failing to dislodge from the ignition switch. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 58,000.
Left outer tie rod began to show problems at 59000 miles. the steering had a thud sound when turning left or right. also, when driving over bumps on the road or grass you could feel strong vibrations from the front steering.
Driving the radio cuts in and out meanwhile service stabilitrac warning comes on. does this around 6-12 times in a 30 minute drive to and from work. on a few instances the vehicle lost all power while driving. this occures on a daily basis. this happens while driving and at a stand still. also the check engine light has come on numerous times. it is a p0597 code stating temp sensor is inoperable. non of these issues should be going on in a 2012 with less than 45,000 miles on it.
For the whole month the red warning lights have been flashing, today the lights were dimming and radio was going on and off. the steering wheel locked on its own and the key wouldn't come out when tried to remove and the truck wouldn't pop up when tried to open it from the outside. vehicle is not cranking at moment and key is still in ignition. this is a serious safety problem or issue. electrical problem hazard that could kill any driver or passengers when driving. has to be as major safety recall. contact the owner as soon as possible at [xxx] this is my daughter [xxx] cell number and i am her dad [xxx] at [xxx]. please is there a recall on vehicle? my daughter drives this car to college classes every day. please advice asap. her life is in danger here. james and pamela are the owners but daughter drives vehicle to college. i am biological father and very concerned. due to mother and stepfather at wife's surgery please notify me of matter to get help. parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).*cc
I was driving down the interstate and the steering locked up and the power steering warning light came on. i pulled onto the side of the interstate, put my hazards on and turned the car off. after calling for assistance i was told i could drive to the nearest auto repair. i turned the car on and driving was like pushing the car down the road and steering was dangerously difficult. i got to the repair shop turned off the car asked for assistance. when mechanic turned the car on light was off and power steering had been restored. he could not explain the glitch that caused the problem and suggested i contact my dealership.

I received my chevy cruze in november of 2014 used with aprox. 59k miles. april 7th driving down a highway at 55-60mph it suddenly started slowing down and would not accelerate. it would jerk and the engine would rev like if you were to be idle and in park and press the gas that's the sound it made. i did not notice the check engine come on or any other lights as i was trying to control my car. the speedometer and rpm indicator started acting erratically while doing so. the gauge would go up and down and the car was slowing down. the steering also became very soft. if i were to take my pinky finger and turn the wheel it would have moved that's how soft it was. all this happened multiple times during a 30 minute time period. after i slowed down and tried going over 30mph it would start to act up again. while this was happened i only had 66k miles. i got it towed to the dealer instead of taking my chances driving it there. it was sitting there a week before they even touched it and they claim they cant find anything wrong with it. i think chevy dealers claim they cant find anything when your car is still under warranty so they don't have to fix it. *tr
This is my second complaint on this vehicle for the same problem. at low speeds the car makes a grinding noise that can be felt when taking off and turning. it has gotten worse and occasionally it can be felt when i am not even turning. this needs to be addressed before it turns into something serious. *tr
At low speeds, when turning, there is a grinding sensation in the steering wheel and can be felt in the floorboard. after taking this to the dealer twice, i was told it was the steering column. my extended warranty does not cover a "noise" and gm will not cover an issue if there is an extended warranty. i was told that changing out a $400+ part might not make a difference, and the noise could return again. *tr
I was driving, and the radio dash began to flash on and off. then the steering became very difficult, and the power steering light came on, the words "service power steering" came on, then the car began to pulse, and then "service traction" came on, then the car shut off completely. *tr
Since march 2015, i have been experiencing issues with and i have video evidence while in failure mode, of what i believe to be failures of the body computer(s) in this vehicle. the dashboard displays have been going on and off under a wide variety of driving situations, and while sitting at idle. they fault when the vehicle is simply driving down the highway. more often i notice it when utilizing turn signals, hazard lights, and breaking. during these faults, the center information display for the hvac and entertainment will frequently turn off. this kills the radio. it at times kills the hvac systems and the turn signals (at least the noise for the turn signal indicators). at times, the center display above the steering column will go black and then display a message about the stabilitrak having failed and requiring it to be checked or the abs needing to be serviced. then it returns to normal mode. the frequency has increased to every time i drive the vehicle. also on at least 3 occasions the abs has actually failed. on one of those occasions, i hit another vehicle while parking. thankfully there was no damage to either vehicle. when connecting the vehicle to a diagnostic device, no issues are indicated. i'm in the military in germany where the roads and highways are extremely hilly and it snows heavily. i'd rather not die in an accident before this issue is rectified.
While driving the car would continuously reboot the radio and the warning stabilitrak light as well as the power steering warning will show up on the dash. the car would experience very stiff steering and i almost got into a crash 3 times because of it. i took it to the autonation chevrolet laurel, md dealership and they could not diagnose a problem with the battery. another technician from tnt auto in columbia, md said that all the wires seem to be on there tight too. *tr
While driving to work i was signaling to switch lanes for my exit off the freeway. began to merge and my steering wheel locked. luckily it's wasn't for long and the freeway was not busy. however the fact that my newly purchased vehicle has a glitch is saddening. what's even worse theirs no maintenance light or check engine light, something to make the dealership believe their is a problem. only a flashing light that says check stabilitrack, traction control, powering steering and at the same time my abs service light begins to flash. really hope chevy puts out a recall.. *js
At low speeds, when turning, there is a grinding sensation in the steering wheel and can be felt in the floorboard. i have taken the vehicle to the dealership and they were unable to reproduce the problem. it only occurs after the car has been sitting for over 15 minute and has a chance to cool down. *tr
2012 chevrolet cruze. consumer writes in regards to power steering malfunction. consumer has different vehicle complaints listed in artemis. *smd the consumer stated the vehicle stalled, in the midst of driving. an alert displayed traction control error and power steering malfunction. the drive train was disabled and apparently locked down. the shift lever moved freely from park, reverse and the drive position. the steering wheel would not move. hydraulic resistance was apparent when attempting to turn left and right. three hours later, the alert disappeared and the vehicle performed as it was designed. *jb
We were driving on rt 206 in jersey and the steering wheel locked up and the car went off the road. the car was totaled. about a week later i received a letter from chevy stating this is a known issue that the steering had increased friction and can cause the steering to lock up. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet cruze. while driving approximately 35 mph and making a left turn, the steering wheel seized. in addition, the instrument panel and radio intermittently operated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the positive battery cable and generator starter cable needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 47,000.
I purchased my 2012 chevy cruze back in august 2012 at the chevy dealer in montebello with "0" miles. two weeks after i purchased the car it began to give me problems. it began to make this very loud noise like if i was driving a trailer. i took it to the dealer an i was told it was normal which is bs because i've never heard a small car that makes noise like that. i wasn't allowed to get refunded i was just given a bunch of bs. a month later it kept doing the same thing but this time the noise was coming from the hood, took it to the dealer and nothing. 3rd time i filed a complaint and said i was going to file a lawsuit and the took my car in an apparently they had to change my radiator, fan, brakes along with the disk. even after all this my car continued doing the same thing but now it turns off!! i tried to turn on my car this saturday and it just wouldn't start. it said something about theft, i disconnected the battery and then it gave a message about check power steering! this will be my 5th time taking it in! i think i have gotten ripped off!! i regret purchasing this vehicle!! now im stuck with a jacked up car and a very high car payment that is not even worth paying for. and to top it off the dealer i purchased it from is no help!! they seem to get upset every time you take the car and tell them there is something wrong with it. im a mother of 3 and my biggest fear is something happening to my children because of this. i purchase this car because i needed something reliable since im always on the road. one thing for sure, if any of my children get hurt because of this i will file a lawsuit because you guys are receiving many complaints and you are not doing anything about it.!! *tr
I bought this car for my daughter, the second or third week after she got it she started to notice the radio flickering on and off while driving for no reason, which eventually led to the radio flickering continuously after using blinkers &windows. "service stabilitrak" flashes on the display often but very quickly and goes off. doesn't occur every time i drive, but it does it more times than not. now the radio will flicker and i will occasionally lose cruise control and power steering. i also have no blinkers/radio when this happens. it usually only happens briefly and will return to normal soon after, but it continues to do it off and on until i park. i have also noticed this occurring when i shift gears to park. most recently i went to start my car and it just clicked and wouldn't start. i got it to start and it said "service anti theft deterrent," then changed to "service power steering" just as i lost power steering while driving. "service stabilitrak quickly flashed next all while i lost blinkers, power steering, and radio. i parked, turned my car off and restarted it and it was just fine. it has been to the chevy dealer once but they could not get a code to read because they can't get the radio to flicker, etc because it only happens every so often but when it does happen it is scary! so there is nothing they can do to fix it. please look into it as i do not feel it is safe for her to drive. this has been going on for 3 months now and i do not feel like this car is reliable which is the reason i bought it! there has to be something that can be done as i have read several complaints that are extremely similar to mine! i also have come to the conclusion that the problems are going to continue to worsen after reading the other complaints.it is a major problem. please don't wait until something tragic happens before something is done about this! please! *tr
Driving down highway and the dic starts flashing and then the power steering failed and the car then lost power and the engine cut out. i was able to pull the car over to the shoulder and stop the car. i was able to restart the vehicle. i took to dealer and they replaced the negative battery cable. i soon received an extended warranty for the cable from gm for 10 yrs or 120000 miles. so they are aware of the issue and cars cutting out and losing power on the highway is not considered dangerous to the drivers or their passengers.
Stopped car tried to back up and it did not, then tried to turn off vehicle and the key would not go into the turn off mode. could not turn the steering wheel, could not release the key, could not turn off the engine. the radio kept turning itself on. waited 2 hours for triple a to come to tow the car to dealership. engine ran for two hours. tow arrived the driver said he had to force the gear shift several times in order to release the steering wheel and key and to turn off the engine so he could tow it. also noticed an anti-freeze leak and this is being fixed under the power train warranty, do not know if is connected to the same issue. dealer can't find anything wrong and i am afraid to drive this car. *tr
bought the car used from a non-chevy dealer in june 2014. after about a month or so and 44000 mpg. all of a sudden, the time/temp/date display (along with the radio) started blacking out. then a few times the "service power steering" warning light flashed on and off and we actually lost our power steering momentarily several times and today 07-20-2014 with me, my husband and 6yr old daughter in the car!!!! very scary. then the "service stabilitrak" warning light flashed on and off as well. at the same time the time/temp/date blacks out again too. the car loses power when traveling at speeds over 50mph. all the warning lights have flickered on and off several times along with the power steering and stablitrak. this issue needs to be addressed. i will be contacting a dealer and legal action will be taken if issue isn't resolved. peoples lives and safety are not something to be taken lightly. *tr
-the following symptoms occur intermittently (approximately one time per month) -while operating the vehicle, the issue typically begins with the center radio display and sound flickering on and off. -next, various electrical systems in the car begi
Purchased used 2012 cruze from local chevy dealer. steering has no free play in the steering wheel, causing constant back and forth corrections and swerving in lane especially at high way speeds. got pulled over by police thinking i was drunk. also takes a lot of effort to keep the car centered down the lane, and if you stop focusing on the steering for even a second the car is swerving out of the lane. congratulations to chevy for producing such a fine product. apparently they never thought to drive the prototype to see if the stupid thing works. duhhhh thank you. *tr
On this particular occurrence the lights on the radio display began to flicker and then all electrical power to the dashboard, airbags, and the electrically assisted power steering went out. it remained off for approximately 10 to 15 seconds. as a result i had no control over the vehicle. the electrical came back on and the dash display depicted the warning message check stabilititrak, or words to that effect. i took it to the dealership and they said that nothing showed up on the scope and there was nothing they could do. this has also happened to my grand daughter on 07/09/2014 out in colorado as she is using the vehicle for school and work. again the dealer states there is nothing showing up on the scope and they have not been able to duplicate the issue even though she had her friend record the event with their cell phone. during this event the vehicle could not be restarted after the vehicle was turned off in a parking lot. after an hour wait the vehicle was started. *tr
Since 11/13 to present, i've been experiencing instances with the stability trak issues with the radio turning on/off for a few mins; the dashboard lights would blink and go dim; it happened often when i'd use the defogger and try to let the window up/down and it would also dim my headlights (i noticed that in the evenings) or even just using the turn signal. recently i was hitting the highway & the power steering went out, the doors unlocked & the messages were on my dash. there's also a dark ring around my steering wheel for the airbag that i believed tried to open. i had to turn the steering wheel with a lot of force to pull to the side of the road to avoid getting hit from behind. i turned the car off & waited a few minutes & turned it back on. it came back on with no issues. the next day the power steering went out again but this time i was in the driveway after arriving home. both times that this has happened, i was using my ac. i went to the dealership & was told that the codes may not come up since it had only happened 2 times. i took it to advance auto and they put it on their computer and no codes showed up. i was told by the place that i purchased my car from to wait for the recall. i've been checking every day since then to see if there is a recall for my car because i don't want to pay for repairs that should already be on the recall list! i'm too afraid to drive the car a long distance for fear of getting hit or even killed by other vehicles if & when my car does it again. *tr
I was driving to my parents house and was at a place where i had to turn so i turned and my steering wheel locked up and i almost hit someone because my steering wheel wouldn't turn. this has happened several times and every time stability track pops up on my screen and my radio flickers on and off and my blinker doesn't make a sound when this happens. now my brakes are starting to act up too when i press the brakes sometimes it rocks back and fourth while i'm stopped also the car makes a funny noise while in park. *tr
I got my car in march & absolutely loved it! for the first few months i had no problems. then i started to notice the radio flickering on and off while driving for no reason, which eventually led to the radio flickering continuously after using blinkers &windows. I am filing a complaint on a 2012 chevrolet cruz ls, that i purchased at cowboy motors. i purchased this vehicle on june 07, 2013,it had 46211 miles and it now has 49789 miles. recently, my wife noticed the radio would cut off and a month ago she told me about an issue dealing with the steering. she said it would get hard to control and sometimes almost impossible. also, the dash indicator light came on symbolizing that we needed to check the steering. i begin to drive the car to see what was happening, nothing happened, until about 10 days ago it happen to me. i have called the dealership and asked if there has been any problems listed with the steering, i was told no but i should bring it in since i had a extended warranty and it would cost a $50 deductible if the warranty covered it. i got on the internet and found out that there is a list of people with the same problem as ours. i am fearful for my wife and grandchildren. i feel that this is a defect in the automobile and something should be done by the dealer or manufacture, to address the problem and from what i read, no one seems to know what the problem is exactly. this is a safety factor issue and my concern is what can i do to get my car fix without it costing me. *tr
Purchased the car on 28 april 2014 from knox ford in radcliff, ky. noticed a faint burning smell. was advised that i rode the clutch during the test drive. had the car checked out and was advised it was good to go. the car was delivered on 30 april. it was finally driven on 5 monday 2014 down to fort campbell, ky. at that point the car reeked of burning ceramic and the power steering locked up completely. after resting it for a few minutes and restating the car, it reengaged. contacted dealer and was advised to go to local chevy dealer for assessment. chevy dealer advised that the power steering module was reading that it was out of center and disengaging. was also advised that a part of the clutch assembly had been replaced a few thousand miles previously and seemed to be rubbing incorrectly. knox ford advised me to return the car to their dealership (120 miles away) and they would work on the car. upon leaving the other dealership, the power steering locked up again and didn't reengage. drove the car 120 miles without power steering and returned to knox ford to have them take to to a chevy dealership. the power steering module was replaced and the car aligned. the chevy dealer couldn't find an issue with the clutch. reclaimed the car on 16 may 2014 and drove the car back down to fort campbell today 19 may 2014. once again, the burning smell has returned. not as strong but it's still there. *js
On the first occurrence the lights on the radio display began to flicker and then all electrical power to the dashboard. the electrical came back on and the dash display depicted the warning message check stabilitrak. i took it to the dealership where i purchased the car and they said that high voltage codes c0800, 07 and high voltage history showed up on the scope and there were no issues. the second time the lights on the radio display began to flicker and then all electrical power to the dashboard, airbags and the electrically assisted power steering went out, while on a very steep mountain road and i had no control over the vehicle. the electrical came back on and the dash display depicted the warning message check stabilitrak. i took it to a different dealership and the dash flickering occurred with the service person in the car driving but nothing showed up when the mechanic was trying to fix it so they said there was nothing they could do. two days later while my daughter was driving she lost power steering and the same issues with the dash and was involved in an accident, thank god her baby was not in the car. please help!....updated 07/31/14 *bf
