I am the third owner of this car and it has 24,500 original miles. at 19,000 (4/19/2004) the steering column lock recall was performed. then in 2006 it was announced that even those initial recall repairs were failing and it was suggested to have the locking pin removed altogether which never was done to my car. my car currently has a locked pin and the dealer says they will not do the repair or remove the pin for free unless i file a complaint with the nhta.
My steering column failed in "locked" position. car can not be driven. i called chevy global and told my car was not covered in recall number 04006c. i called dealer and was told the steering column was fixed in 2004, two years before the 2006 recall. i asked how could the column lock if the original lock plate was removed? no one can answer that. they proceeded to remove the lock plate and charge me $300. i never received any notification of this recall or service bulletin back in 2006.

I recently discovered i have a service column lock on my car and have discovered its a recall problem.nhtsa campagn number is 04v060000 and nhtsa action number is ea02031 and gm recall number is 04006. momentumchevrolet located in san jose are denying this recall and don't want to fix it when it clearly is a recall. so my question is are they allowed to not fix it when its a recall?
The corvette shut down and displayed steering column lock. based on prior gm corvette recalls the recall to fix this problem (steering column lock) where they state "a crash could occur without warning" did not cover all corvettes made during this time period. gm service operations dcs851 effective through 2003. i did not get far with gm or the dealership on addressing the column lock issue. since gm states it could result in a crash it surprised me that they don't have any interest in looking into whether the recall should be expanded to include other corvettes during the time period they had over 126,000 affected. if it was necessary back than what is different now?
Cpsc: i1530233a. 1999 chevrolet corvette. consumer stated while driving out his garage the steering wheel locked. *ln the consumer was informed by the dealer, the electronic steering lock and harness needed to be replaced. the consumer stated the problem was addressed twice. *jb
While pulling my car out of the garage and in drive the steering wheel locked as if the key was removed and in the security mode. i stopped the car and tried to wiggle the key to remedy, it would not, i had to stop the car, return the transmission to park, turn the key off and remove, and when i reinstalled and started the car the steering wheel would unlock. i took the car to the dealer, whom informed me this was a safety recall, had been addressed about 3500 miles prior, and it would now need to be repeated and my cost is almost $1000.00. it appears to me the recall correction was either not designed, installed, or has correctly resolved the recall problem. imagine had this occurred while traveling at highway speeds?? i contacted gm and reported, they chose to do nothing. service active handling message on dic . it comes and gos . it usually shuts off after turning ignition off and restarting . i don't know if it is working or not. this safety concern . gm should have service parts for electronic components or have some other company have the rights to make them . what are owners supposed to do? we need a law for this. this is not a throw a way car . this car has only 24000 miles. *tr

Steering wheel position sensor is bad. when the driver information center initially displays the warning, "service active handling" & "service car soon", the car immediately engages the front left brake as the computer believes the car is sliding. these are fault codes c1286 & c1287. at speed, this causes the car to change to the left lane or cross the centerline into approaching traffic. there is no fix provided by gm. they have discontinued this part only for the 1999 & 2000 model year. it is available for all other model years. *tr

My steering wheel locked up when pulling out of a parking space. i took it to the dealer for the factory recall. they said that the factory recall procedure had already been done on the car once. they said that because it has been more than 12 months since the first repair was done they will not cover the expense of fixing the problem. i now have the choice of driving a car that has a steering column that may lock up while driving or having to fork over close to $1000 to have them fix something that should have been done right the first time. *tr

I want to report a recurring problem with chevy corvettes 97-04 model years. the steering column lock on these cars malfunctions and renders your car immobilized. my 1999 model with 46000 miles has been through 2 recalls in 2001 and 2004 and locked up again this past saturday. i had the car towed to a gm dealer and according to chevy i have to pay for the repairs. what is the use of a recall if it doesn't solve the problem. it is also a safety issue. can you imagine driving at interstate highway speeds and your steering wheel locks up and you have no control? this problem happens to all corvettes in these years but it is more prevalent with manual transmissions. chevrolet needs to fix at their expense this serious defect before someone gets killed if they haven't already. this is a major inconvenience, expense and safety issue for corvette owners. chevrolet should have corrected this problem 2 recalls ago. *kb

I was leaving my home for work. a warning light on the dash stated "steering column lock failure". the engine cut off and the column locked. thankfully this happened at 20-25mph. the car had to be towed to the dealer where they determined that the steering column lock actuator had shorted. this actuator, according to gm records, had previously been replaced under a safety recall. they charged me over $500 to replace the actuator this time. at speed a steering column lock actuator failure could be deadly. *tr

I would like to know how to place a complaint about gm. they have had a recall on y corvette where the steering column would lock up and fuel shuts off. they refuse to pay for the repair . my car is at the dealer and the service manager even said its related to the recall . i think this should be reported asap. many other corvette owners are affected by this defect and gm refuses to pay and claims that the cars is out of warrant this is a 1999 corvette. a recall is a recall and it should be fixed free of charge to the consumer. please advise on how to proceed and further report gm for this abuse. *tr

Service column lock was recalled and fixed in 2006 but service column lock occurred again. this has been an ongoing problem well documented and gm has no fix for it it appears there are several fixes out there at the cost of the consumer which is not appropriate that gm refuses to properly troubleshoot this problem which is even occurring after the required ntsb recall repair is made. *tr

I attempted to drive my 1999 chevrolet corvette and the vehicle steering column locked up. i investigated the issue and found recall notification ea02031. however after notifying the my local dealer paradice chevrolet temecula ca of the issue they researched my vin and to my surprise the recall service had already been performed on my vehicle in 2005 i am deeply concerned that the matter was not resolved properly and there my still be an issue the manufacturer has not uncovered. please advise?
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet corvette. the contact stated that the anti theft device locks the steering wheel when the vehicle is parked. the failure also occurs when he attempts to remove the keys from the ignition; however, there is a potential that it could occur while the vehicle is in motion as well. the vehicle has been repaired twice, but the failure still persists. there is a recall for the failure, but no remedy. the recall number was unknown. the failure mileage was 70,000.
I experienced the steering column on my 1999 corvette lock up while i was driving it. i was only in a restaurant parking lot and was able to stop and call for help. i called my local repair facility and they had informed me that i must have my car towed in for the necessary repairs. upon arriving at the repair facility, they informed me that a recall had been issued to remedy this issue. they check my vehicle identification number and quickly realized that the recall had already been performed on my car. they had to replace the parts once again and i was charged almost $700 for the repair. i asked why i needed to pay for the recall and they said i was paying for it because the recall had already been performed. i researched the exact recall pertaining to this particular incident (04v0600000) and discovered something that should not have been able to happen if the recall was performed as intended. the vehicle was supposed to be reconfigured as to disable it from being driven while the steering column was locked up. on the models equipped with an automatic transmission, the lock was removed from the steering column and a lock was installed on the shifter so it could not be removed from the park position. this was also intended to keep the anti-theft feature. on models equipped with manual transmissions, the lock on the steering column could not be removed because this was the only anti-theft device. instead the fuel to the engine was supposed to be interrupted if the steering column locked up. on my vehicle, i was able to drive my car into a parking spot at the restaurant. i was not able to steer the vehicle because of the steering column being locked up. i called the general motors reimbursement department and told them what happened and they said my claim was denied because the vehicle was out of warranty. from what i understand, mileage or warranty does not apply to safety recalls. please advise. *tr

I have a 1999 chevrolet corvette that has had problems with the steering column from day one and has never been properly fixed. now, the dealership says it's my responsibility to fix it. *tr
Backing out of driveway in my 1999 corvette, steering column locked causing me to go over a curb. warning light came on dash board. i had car towed to nearest chevy dealer where they proceeded to change the steering column lock motor. they told me that a recall (#04006b on feb/2004)on this car was performed and it was no longer covered under warranty. when i inquired as to a second posted recall #04006c) service mgr told me he knew nothing about second recall. they charged me $579.79 to repair and did not follow the guide lines stated in the second recall, where as the column lock assembly is to be rendered inoperative. i feel i was taken advantage of and chevrolet refuses to reimburse me and disable the lock assembly. talking to other people on line, this problem has returned on many vehicles after recall was performed. i am weary of driving my car because i never know if and when my steering column will lock causing an accident or possible loss of life. gm must be forced to do the right thing here and i want my money back. *tr

Steering column locked up for the 3rd time since i've had the car (5 mos). on two ocassions it eventually released on its own. the gm recall bulletin 04006c, electronic column lock, was refused by bobby murray chevrolet in raleigh, nc, unless i agreed to pay $90/hr for diagnostics. they state i have already had a recall performed (an older recall, not 04006c according to the vis service date), so there's nothing they can do without payment. i contacted gm and they disagree with the dealership's assesment, and to this date have not responded to gm's inquiries.it appears to me to be all about the money and that they could care less about the safety issues involved. according to nhtsa and gm, the vehicle should not have been released back to me without the recall performed. at no cost!

1) after placing the key into the ignition and starting the vehicle then placing the manual shifter into reverse to back away from the curb the steering column remained in the "lock" position. no series of removing and replacing the key and shaking of the steering wheel could cure the steering lock situation. 2) the vehicle cannot be driven therefore i had the vehicle towed to the dealer who performed the "steering lock recall" approximately 6 months prior at my expense. 3) the column lock mechanism was isolated as the fault and the dealer requests that i pay the repair fees. i have requested through the chevrolet complaint department that i be reimbursed for all the repairs and towing.*jb
