Before a gm dealer sells a used gm car, shouldn't they have to run the vin to see if any recalls are outstanding on that vehicle?? bought my vette from micheal chevrolet, called another dealer to find out the steering wheel lock recall was never done! i am a vehicle rep. for ford, and am responsible for 500 company lease vehicles. i would be in a huge amount of trouble if i sent a used vehicle back to our b lot or out to auction without all recalls being completed! *nm
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet corvette. the contact purchased the vehicle and "service column lock" was displayed on the instrument panel. the check engine light also illuminated. she then discovered that the vehicle was under recall. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was repaired, however, the repair was improperly performed because the light continued to illuminate. the vehicle was taken to the shop repeatedly for repair, but the failure continues to recur. during the most recent failure, the security light illuminated while driving 50 mph. the contact continued to drive for 15 minutes and parked the vehicle at her friend's home. the vehicle was able to be restarted, but the fuel supply caused the vehicle to shut off. when she restarted the vehicle, it would only drive 1 mph. if she tried to accelerate, the vehicle would automatically shut off. the vehicle was towed to her residence where it currently remains. the failure mileage was 49,000 and current mileage was 52,000. the consumer stated the vehicle is being repaired again for the steering lock problem. updated 09/25/07. *jb
1999 chevrolet corvette developed problems with the steering.***no answer required***. *mr the dealer told the consumer the recall had already been performed on his vehicle, however the later part of july, the steering wheel locked when the consumer was exiting the garage. the consumer shut the engine off and after a couple of restarts, the consumer managed to unlock the steering wheel. when the consumer tried to rotate the steering wheel it had a grab about every inch or so and a clicking sound. the consumer felt the entire steering system should be dismantled and doesn't believe the recall was performed correctly.*jb
Campaign number 04v060000 completed on my 1999 corvette in march 2005 by courtesy chevrolet in orlando, florida. recall is safety related with consequence summary, "if this occurs, a crash could occur without warning." on may 12, 2005, steering column lock engaged with ignition on and car in motion at very low speed. no accident occurred. car was towed to classic chevrolet in altamont springs, fl. recall work appears ineffective. gm says that i have to pay for towing and potentially for repair work to redo the "mechanical failure" in the steering column lock system - approximately $800.
The steering column locked. vehicle was towed to the nearest dealer. the part had ben repaired three times, however the problem recurred. *ak

Upon returning to my vehicle, the steering column was locked, and the driver information center displayed a message saying "service steering lock". i initially brough my vehicle to tom jumper chevrolet in roswell, georgia. the service advisor claimed it was a defective battery and offered to change my battery for the meager sum of $357.00. having no confidence whatsoever that his diagnosis was proper, i removed my vehicle from his premises and transferred it to nalley, chevrolet in atlanta. it turned out that the steering column lock actuator had failed, and had also blown fuses in the cic computer. the repair cost was $450.78. given the steering column lock actuator is the subject of nhtsa action number ea02031, i do not feel it was appropriate for gm to charge me for the repair given the widespread nature of the problem.*ak
The steering column has locked up twice in my 1999 chevrolet corvette. i understand this is a common problem and i believe chevrolet should pay to have this problem resolved. *la
My 1999 chevy corvette has had the steering column lock up twice for no reason. once my husband was stranded late at night after a work meeting and took hours to get home. now it is stuck in my garage because a tow truck can't get to it. i understand that gm knows about this problem for years and did nothing to fix it. *la
Steering column is locked up after having the recall performed.
The steering column has locked on three separate occasions and i have had to have the car towed all three times. i was told by the first two dealerships that it had been repaired and i was not charged for the work. this time, however, i have been charged $297.41 and do not know whether it has been fixed this time either. i resent having to pay for towing and repairs so many times and would like a resolution to the problem and a refund of my money.*ak

Steering column lock up. on 7/17/03 i went to start my 1999 corvette and the steering column would not unlock, after several attempts it unlock. this is a very serious safety concern because if it doesn't unlock fully it may engage while the car is moving. chevy knows this is a problem ,they replaced it once all ready, if it was a safety concern then it should be a safety concern now by looking at the nhtsa web site you have gotten a lot of complaints about this ,it's not an ashtray or the radio this is a major control part of the vehicle gm should be accountable for this before someone gets injured or killed. *jb

While driving my 1999 chevrolet corvette i turned off the highway & into the parking lot of a store upon doing so my steering wheel locked up. i never received any warnings in my dic about steering problems i also had this replacement part per a recall notice less than a year ago & at that time found out it had been replaced prior to that. the dealership towed the car in & informed us that they had fixed it again! this is an extremely dangerous vehicle! the notes i read on your site even 1997 through 2002 models with this problem none of the reports were while driving they were when people got into their car & started it that the wheel didn't unlock. i have as i said before never received a message in the dic prior to any of the lock up problem. i am the 2nd owner of this vehicle & in the 18 months i have had it it has been replaced 2 times this last time could have been fatal to both myself and my daughter! just 10 seconds earlier being on the highway with speeds of 60 mph we could have been killed! at what cost will it take for general motors to correct this wrong? my daughter says she will not get back into the car again! i myself am scared for my life to take the chance that this will occur again! so, i refuse to drive the car anymore. these are not cheap cars to buy! i have owed several other corvettes & had a few minor problems here & there, but not anything that could be a life threatening or life taking problem especially after the fixes being done by the dealership! another thing i would like to ask of you, if you have an automatic transmission on this car, is it not supposed to be locked when the steering wheel is? i did all the so-called things, of key removal & wait, etc & it did not unlock the steering, but you could put it in any gear to move it. just straight forward & backward do to no steering. i can't seem to get a real answer to this question. *nlm ref. in ea02-031 *cjs
I have a 1999 corvette coupe. i was driving on folsom blvd. (at watt avenue) in sacramento, ca during rush-hour traffic (4:50 p.m.). i pulled out into traffic and my car went completely dead. luckily, no one rear-ended me. i was able to re-start my car but the steering wheel would not turn and a "steering column" locked message on my computer read out instructed me to wait 10 seconds then remove the key. so i complied. i then again started my car, but the "steering column" locked message came on and my steering column was, indeed, locked. luckily, my steering wheel was aimed in a straight line and i could drive forward out of the busy intersection where i stopped in front of a gas station. i called folsom chevrolet's service dept. and they advised i would need to have my vehicle towed into their shop. this problem could have easily ended up in a terrible accident had i not been in stop-and-go traffice. can you imagine what would've happened if i was on the freeway doing 65-70 mph? ref. in ea02-031 *cjs
I had a 1999 corvette and the steering locked up. i took it in and they fixed, but it happened again and they would not fix it unless i paid for it. i bought it new. *tr
1999 chevrolet corvette coupe steering column lock problems: twice in two years the first time it happened, i followed all proceedures shared by fellow corvette owners and the manual, i had to repeat this procedure several times before it would unlock. i then took the car into the dealer, they replaced the steering column lock system but told me that there was no offical recall on this. one year later, same thing happened again, i tried and tried to get the steering column to unlock. it would not, called the dealership, they wanted the car to be towed in. they told me that since they had already replaced the system, they would not replace it again. (by the way the car was still under gm extended warranty.) i did not have the car towed right away, but later that day i tried all of the same procedures again, without success. i went onto the internet to a corvette website/discussion board and researched if others had the same problem and answers/ideas tried. locating several postings suggesting to pull a specific fuse, wait 1 minute, then re-installed the fuse. by disconnecting this fuse, the computer brain would reset itself concerning this task and the pin should unlock when the ignition key was re-inserted. i tried this, several times, over and over without success. finally out of frustration i resorted to "shake the steering wheel hard back and forth"until the pin would release. after a minute of shaking... the pin did let loose and the steering column unlocked. the next day i took the car into the dealer and insisted that they replace the steering column lock system again, even though they told me a day earlier that they wouldn't do that, they did change it when i confronted them. it does not appear to me that gm has not addresssed this problem or acknowledge it as being a problem. well i am here to say that it is, this is why i am filing this compaint. ref. in ea02-031 *cjs

On 7-3-02 and 6-27-03 my corvette steering locked up. towed to dealer and fixed. dealer could not gaurantee it would stay fixed. now, after repairs or service the dealer will not test drive my corvette on the roaid only around dealer lot. i risk my life every time i drive the vette. waiting for steering to lock up.i know other corvette owners who have had same problem. i understand that nhtsa has received thousands of complaints regarding the steering wheel locking up. i understand this has something to do with the anti-theft system. gm is aware of this problem and re-designed the anti-theft system in the 2002 or 2003 models. please advise on steps to take with gm to clear this matter up. *ak
Purchased used 1999 chevrolet corvette coupe (c5) in february 2002 from dealer. in april of 2002, i got in the car, started it and proceeded to drive off. noticed that the steering wheel was locked up and i couldn't steer the vehicle. had to have the vehicle towed to a dealer where upon they had to remove the steering lock to allow the car to be steerable. they fixed the problem but after reading an article in the february 2003 issue of corvette fever, i thought it best to let nhtsa know of this particular incident. i was not hurt or injured and am filing this only for the purpose to make you aware of it and maybe to help someone else who owns one of these vehicle to become aware of this problem ref. in ea02-031 *cjs
