Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

For no apparent reason and without any warning (no check engine light or anything), i received an "engine power reduced" warning and my car's engine completely shut down while i was completing a turn in a busy intersection. luckily, i was able to coast to safety and park in a nearby parking lot. the car refused to turn back on for several minutes. once it did, i drove my car to my office and was able to start it and drive it without further incident for several weeks. then, without warning it happened again while i was on the freeway and has been happening intermittently since then. when i took it to the dealership, they claimed they are not aware of other people having this problem, but i have found numerous complaints and reports from other owners online, so i'm not convinced of their honesty or concern regarding this matter. they say they *think* the problem might be the master computer or at least that is their "best guess" (their words, not mine). i will be replacing it later this week. unfortunately, i'm not confident the repair will fix the problem. after gm's repeated and explicit denial of the power steering problem and how long it took them to admit there even was one, i have decided to appeal to you. at present, when driving this car, i am a danger to myself and everyone else who might be around me on the road...as are all other cobalt drivers. please, investigate this matter before someone has this happen at the wrong place and the wrong time and someone gets seriously hurt, or worse. gm knows it created a car with a faulty electrical system which could result in catastrophic failures and they need to take responsibility for it and fix it. just because they stopped making the car, does not absolve their responsibility to make them safe for everyone on the road. *tr

After approach from stop sign, went to accelerate, vehicle stalled, dashboard computer lights flashing, i.e power steering, brake, mph, and pinging. started vehicle after multiple attempts. difficult steering, accelerating no more than 30 mph, and transmission jerking. this vehicle has been to shop 2 times. the trans module was replaced august 1, 2012. a day after pick up, it had the same issues i.e. difficulty steering, unexpected stalling, rough limited acceleration, flashing computer lights on the dashboard. the auto shop employee assured me" it is safe to drive and do not be afraid.." the shop had this vehicle for three weeks. it was written on invoice, " car driven for 26 miles trouble free has possible inop issue, but is operating as designed." nine days after pickup this vehicle still remains unsafe on the road, with unexpected stalling stopping i.e stop/ go traffic, intersections, and computer lights flashing on dashboard. the tcm /ecm issue is still not resolved causing a safety issue with unexpected stalling and difficulty steering and loss of acceleration. *tr

The power steering message was on and the car ran like a dog and shifted roughly and traction control light was luminated and had no power is similar to all other accounts on this year and model? i need to know if gm is going to fix it and if it happens again am i going to loose control of the car? i understand it has a recall on it but considering the miles i have on it are they going to honor the recall? i don't have money to fix it so i don't know what to do if it happens again? i never seen or had anything like this before and i have always had gm products form oldsmobile, pontiac and mostly chevys i need reliable transporting on my job please tell me gm make this right by me [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that while driving 40 mph, the vehicle stalled and was nearly involved in a crash. the contact was able to safely control the vehicle and maneuver off the road. the dealer was not notified of the failure. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure and current mileages were 107,000.

tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that while driving approximately 34 mph, the power steering warning light illuminated, the speed decreased to zero and the tachometer increased to 4,000 rpms. the locks on the door started going up and down and the vehicle became difficult to steer. the contact stopped and turned the vehicle off. after the vehicle was started, the failure was resolved. the failure recurred six times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who determined that the vehicle had too many fault codes to be diagnosed properly. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure however, did not offer any assistance. the vin was unavailable. the current and failure mileage was 136,000.

I was traveling home with one other passenger in the car with me at 35 mph, the car turned off, the steering wheel locked up. i was scared and didn't know what to do. i shifted the car from drive into neutral and then restarted it, then slipped it back into drive... i've never been more scared then when i had absolute no control over my car. im just lucky i didn't panic. this has happened twice to me. i now don't feel safe driving my cobalt and very disappointed this problem has been fixed. to me i don't feel safe driving myself or my family in that car. *tr

My 2005 chevy cobalt cuts off on me whenever i am on hills, going through curves, stopping at red lights or stop sign and sometime when i am simply driving down the street. if i am in rush hour traffic it cuts off on the highway as well. once or twice a week my power steering will go completely out while i am driving. i just read in the newspaper that if you only have the one key that it will not cut off but that's not true either. my car cuts off weather i use mu key on the key ring or the key that i have that is not on the key chain. not knowing what was causing the car to cut off all of the time, i have changed the battery, ignition switch, and the throttle something or another. i have invested a lot of money into this car trying to figure out what the problem is. i am at my wits end t this point and was just about to give up when i read the article in today's (03/09/2014) paper. maybe i can get some kind of help with this issue now. *tr

After starting the cobalt or even if i am driving down the interstate at 70 mph, the t/c lights, brake lights, power steering lights all light up on the dash. the speedometer and rpm gauges start going crazy. the radio will also go in and out. usually on the interstate, the car will continue to drive, which is very scary. but if i am in town or slowing down to stop, the car will cut off. then after i crank it again and start to move, the transmission changes gears really rough and feels like it is going to fall out. the only thing i have found to fix this (after weeks at different dealerships) is to turn the car off and flip the key on and off several(20 plus) times. *tr

Engine would not turn over no electrical connection this happened several times during ownership.

I purchased a chevy cobalt brand new in 2005. from the moment it left dealership i have had one recall issue after another. the main issue is stalling while driving caused by the ignition switch. this had been fixed at schumacer chevrolet several times. my vehicle continues to stall and i am terrified of causing an accident due to this recall which gm refuses to fix. i feel i was sold a lemon and all i get from gm and the local dealers is nothing. my vehicle is worse with the stalling. i don't know where to turn to. please help. i don't want monetary compensation from gm if i or any passenger in my vehicle dies in an accident due to a malfunction due to gm. *tr
