Vehicle wouldn't start. like the battery was dead, wouldn't even try to turn over. go to turn the key off and pop my trunk where the battery is located and i can not get my key to turn all the way back to the off position, as a result i cannot remove my key. the speedometer read 30mph even though the vehicle never started and wasn't moving. non of the electronics were working so i was unable to pop my trunk. this has happened several times before and eventually the vehicle will start and when it does the battery light stays on and the dash reads; engine performance low. the transmission will surge as i am driving and i cannot go faster than 30mph. i have even had the car shut off completly while i was driving down the road. after anywhere between a few hours to a few weeks the vehicle will stop acting up and drive normal for a while. agian the normal lasts anywhere between a few hours to a few months as well. the power stering also flashes on the dash and sometimes cuts compleatly out.
Car alarms power steering display comes on, car shakes, won't shift gears, was looked at , comp said lost connection to tmc trans modular control. while in motion
About once a month "power steering" appears on display, sometime power assist is gone, most times it is still there but transmission shifts very hard and stalls engine when stopped for red light. if power steering comes on right away after starting vehicle, shut off, smack pass side of center console, then start, usually off then, but if vehicle is hot from sitting in sun, or very cold in winter, you have to drive it and either heat it up or cool it off before pulling over parking and shut off for 15 minutes, then hit it then start it. told dealer of this before p/s recall work was done they said it was not related, when i went to pick it up they ask if we were having trouble with the power steering and transmission, i said yes, they said oh have a nice day.

While driving in town shortly after turning onto a 45 mph road my vehicle, automatic, started hesitating while shifting into the next gear. it would shift but not like normal. brought it into a repair shop to have a diagnostic ran to be informed it is a failure to communicate with tcm. code u0101 and also u2100. after doing research there has been multiple complaints about this. so first things first replaced the tcm with a new one at the dealership. after replacement the vehicle is still not shifting correctly.

Gm replaced ignition parts and shifter mechanism as per recall. shortly after issues began with steering locking up, transmission not shifting and various warning lights flashing. this became more frequent and is now impossible to drive. my technician says it is a body or transmission control module costing well over a thousand dollars. there appear to be 100s of 1000s of the same issue as per search engines. i will contact my local gm dealership. if gm will not back up its product it will be the last gm in my driveway. i will trade in on a toyota.

My car has been stalling out as it gets to lower speeds and shifting very hard. there is a clicking in the dash somewhere and the speed odometer was fluctuating. it hesitates and tries to shut off at every stop. loosing power and speed even down hill. the power steering reading has been coming on. and the display for gas mileage will now go to all lines no numbers. i am starting to be afraid to drive my car. that its going to get me rear ended when i am turning and it shuts off. i fear for my safety and the safety of my children. i went so far as to this morning recording the dash as it was acting up so i can show my husband. *tr
While driving home the chevrolet cobalt (which we've only had for two weeks) engine shut off, luckily we were in the neighborhood going slow when this happened. i started the car up again and pressed on the gas but it would not go forward, now only the reverse works. *tr
The first time it happened, was at interstate speeds.(60 to 70mph) the second, was in city stop and go traffic. the third was backing out of my driveway after a 5 minute idle. the fourth was when my last mechanic was test driving it because he thought he'd fixed it. dash lights blink on and off, all warning lights come on, engine cooling fans stop operating, transmission hunts for what gear it should be in; resulting in the transmission self destructing. engine management, other than the cooling fans, seems to be unaffected. i've replaced 4 tcm's so far; as all mechanics say that is the problem. it works for a few days or a week, then the same problem manifest. this seems to be a problem with quite a few gm vehicles.
Car was recalled in 2010 for power steering. previous owner had it fixed. i initially reported back in january 2014 of recurring problem of losing power steering while driving. i was told it was already fixed so i would have to pay out of pocket to fix same problem as the recall. here it is a year later and i'm still having the same problem with the power steering. the speedometer started flickering back and forth going haywire and there was a weird ticking noise in the area near the gearshift. i had to pull over on the side of the highway and was almost struck by a tractor trailer because the power steering locked up on me and i had my 3 kids in the car. i was told that i needed a new coil pack, it was replaced and it's still doing the same thing. it shakes at red lights and occasionally cuts off. i have to press the pedal to the floor to get it to accelerate which it does but very slowly, and then it just takes off like a rocket and i have no control over it. this is very dangerous!! also my car can switch gears without having to press the brake or the button in the gearshift. i can just simply push the gearshift back and forth without being in the car. while backing out of my driveway my kneecap bumped my keys and my car turned off. there needs to be another recall of the power steering because apparently the replacement parts are faulty as well. or it could be the faulty wiring altogether in the system. these chevy cobalts need to be taken off of the streets and owners reimbursed for the car plus all of the trouble and near death experiences that we have to continue to experience on gms behalf. i have read several other complaints about the power steering being fixed and still have the same results as myself. how many people will have to die or another lawsuit presented before there's another recall to have these cars removed permanently off the roads? *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that while driving the power steering failed after the power steering light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the transmission control module needed to be replaced. the repairs were made but the problem persisted. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 24,275.

On june 18, 2014 while driving 45 miles per hour i suddenly lost power steering in the vehicle and the engine kept cutting out like it was going to shut off. i pulled into a store parking lot and the shifter would not work properly when trying to get it into park. power steering light, engine light and several other lights appeared on my dashboard. . i called the dealership on june 18, 2014 to notify them of my power steering going out and the other issues described above. they told me parts were still not available. i did receive a call back that they did in fact have the part and to bring in the vehicle on june 19, 2014. my husband drove the vehicle 35 miles to the dealership with no power steering, the engine wanted to die every time he came to a stop and acted erratically the whole drive there. according to the invoice received the dealership mileage on my vehicle was 114, 340 and they performed recall 10023 v220 removed and replaced power steering motor with motor kit 1 19257875 motor kit. on june 20, 2014 the car was driven 320 miles. on june 21, 2014 i had no power steering. on june 23, 2014 i had to have a wrecker service tow my vehicle back to the dealership.. on july 18, 2014 i picked up my vehicle. according to the invoice received the dealer performed recall 13454 (f-cylinder kit ), performed recall 14113 (removed and replace ignition cylinder and programmed 2 new keys per recall 14113). the mileage they say was on my vehicle on this invoice dated 7/18/14 was 114, 292. don't know how my mileage went backwards??? on july 28, 2014 driving to work at 4:30 am going 60 mph my power steering light comes on, the engine is cutting out, the dashboard lights up, the speedometer needle is flickering uncontrollably and i have no where to pull over. this is the 3rd time power steering problem due to gm recall. help!!! *tr
The car will lose power, like it is shifting down, transmission slipping, and either start to stall or will stall. sometimes, if it has run for a long time the problem temporarily goes away. not safe to drive however and 3 mechanics have attempted to repair with no success. *tr
Tl- the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that when he turned the vehicle on and then off it failed to restart. the vehicle also made a rumbling noise when the failure occurred. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the ignition module and the spark plug wires needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 93,000. rk
This happens to me on different occasions i when i park my car or stop driving i try to shut my car off and i cannot my key will be stuck in the ignition and still running for about up to 30 mins my last time this problem happened to me. my other problem i am having is i can start my car perfectly fine but i try to shift the gear from park to drive and i cannot its like its stuck i put my foot on the gas and try to shift it but all i hear is a clicking noise coming from the steering wheel area sometimes i have to sit with the car running for about 15-20 mins until i can finally get the car in drive. *tr
I had the ignition cylinder replaced about a year ago, due to the key not being able to release. this was a common problem with 2005 model year cobalts. well, the vehicle is doing this again. the key is not being released from the ignition cylinder. however, this time i believe it is the shifter assembly that has gone bad. there is no reverse lock out. i can freely cycle through the gears without applying the brakes which is a safety hazard. i can put the car in reverse without applying the brakes by simply moving the shift lever. little to no force is needed, i can accidentally knock the lever into reverse with the littlest of force. i have yet to contact the dealer about the issue since i am sure it will cost a fortune to fix even though it is a documented problem with a few technical service bulletins on the issue. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the ignition switch failed to release the key while parked. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the technician was unable to remove the key from the ignition and informed the contact that his vehicle had a transmission problem that was not covered under the recall. the contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under nhtsa campaign numbers: 14v171000 (electrical system) and 14v047000 (air bags, electrical system). the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 900.
While driving my cobalt from anywhere between 10mph to 50mph multiple "ding" noises occur. then any number of alert lights come on including; traction control, air bag, check engine, etc... there is a strange clicking noise that comes from somewhere in the dash. also, along with these symptoms the transmission (auto trans) begins to shift very hard both up and down, car shudders as if it is going to stall when it comes to a near stop. the scariest and most dangerous part is that the car has experienced loss of power steering at speed and loss of braking control. sometimes i have spent 5 minutes trying to get my key out of the ignition as well, and must forcefully move the transmission shift knob back and forth until the key turns free. this car is a danger, and despite having multiple recalls it is still unsafe to drive. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while driving various speeds, the power steering would become difficult to maneuver and the vehicle would vibrate violently. the power steering indicator illuminated. the failures occurred several times. the dealer stated that the transmission needed to be repaired. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 100,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the vehicle's doors constantly locked independently. the contact had to crawl in and out of the vehicle through the window. while driving approximately 45 mph, the vehicle lost power and the power steering and check engine indicators illuminated and remained lit. the vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road and powered off. the vehicle was later restarted and driven to the contact's residence. the contact called harry green chevrolet at 304-624-6304 (1858 e pike st, clarksburg, wv 26301) and was informed that there was no recall. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there were no recalls for the failure. the manufacturer informed the contact about nhtsa campaign number: 07v014000 (structure). the contact had not received a recall notice. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 80,000.
At random times, my 2005 chevy cobalt will pop up a "check engine" light and a "traction control" light, where i lose my power steering, the motor shifts hard into each gear, and the motor runs very rough. also, there are clicking sounds at the shifter, like it is trying to shift into a gear or something. this is a serious hazard and as i've read online, i am not the only one this has happened to. there are thousands of others. this entire car needs to be recalled because no one knows what is doing this! *tr
While driving, the check engine light came on and the information display on the dashboard flashed "power steering." the car began shifting in and out of gear. the shifts are very rough and cause the car to jerk. there is also a rapid clicking sound that comes from the area of the gear selector. the code for the check engine light relates to the transmission control module. *tr
While driving on a major highway, "power steering" message is displayed on dash, warning chime sounds repeatedly, power door locks cycle at random, instrument panel gauges stop working intermittently and jump around, complete loss of power, and random warning lights appear on dash. at times the gas pedal was completely unresponsive, then vehicle would lurch forward - had a near miss incident when the loss of power on acceleration from a red light almost caused another vehicle to hit us. issue has occurred at random intervals since the car was new, but has become more frequent lately and tends to occur more often on hot days. dealer was unable to duplicate concern, despite hundreds of similar complaints on the internet. *tr
My car repeatedly go through times of fits. these fits include losing power steering, power steering chime, traction control chime, clicking behind the radio, spinning speedometer, gas gauge fails, jerking or hiccupping as one person described it, occasional stalling. my car will drive fine for weeks, likes its new even, then all of a sudden it has a fit and this goes on for days. this started when my car was a year or two old. i have taken it to the dealer a total of 8 times. early on when the car was younger it would seem to be repaired only do start this problem again a year later. now that the car is older and not under warranty i have quit taking it as i do not believe it will help. they do not seem to know how to correct this problem. they are rude to me. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that both the traction control and power steering warning indicators illuminated until the engine was turned off. there was also a complete loss of power steering and the transmission began to down shift independently. the contact was able to continue to drive with excessive force being applied to the steering wheel. the failures would recur sporadically. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and repaired under nhtsa campaign id number 10v073000 (steering). the failure recurred one year after the recall remedy was performed. the vehicle was not repaired for the most recent failure. the manufacturer was not notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 45,000. the vin was unavailable.
After approach from stop sign, went to accelerate, vehicle stalled, dashboard computer lights flashing, i.e power steering, brake, mph, and pinging. started vehicle after multiple attempts. difficult steering, accelerating no more than 30 mph, and transmission jerking. this vehicle has been to shop 2 times. the trans module was replaced august 1, 2012. a day after pick up, it had the same issues i.e. difficulty steering, unexpected stalling, rough limited acceleration, flashing computer lights on the dashboard. the auto shop employee assured me" it is safe to drive and do not be afraid.." the shop had this vehicle for three weeks. it was written on invoice, " car driven for 26 miles trouble free has possible inop issue, but is operating as designed." nine days after pickup this vehicle still remains unsafe on the road, with unexpected stalling stopping i.e stop/ go traffic, intersections, and computer lights flashing on dashboard. the tcm /ecm issue is still not resolved causing a safety issue with unexpected stalling and difficulty steering and loss of acceleration. *tr
On several prior occasions, the key would become stuck in the ignition. to solve this problem, i would simply shift from park to drive, cycling through the gears. this would allow the key to be removed from the ignition. i figured it was a small problem with the automatic gear shifter, it may not be fully engaging in park. this situation carried on for approximately two (2) years, whenever needed i would repeat the cycling of gears to disengage the key. however, a few days ago the key became stuck in the ignition and the previous solution would no longer dislodge the key. i found the switch under the steering wheel to remove the key, but the car is inoperable due to the key becoming stuck in the ignition cylinder on a constant basis. upon doing some research, i have come to the conclusion that is a common problem with automatic transmission equipped cobalts. the shifter is not fully engaging a micro shifter when engaging in park, causing the key to remain in the ignition. it has come to the point where i can not remove the key, even while using the switch under the steering wheel. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated the vehicle would shift abnormally hard and would often jump when driving at various speeds. in addition, the vehicle would sporadically attempt to stall. the contact stated that various warning lights would illuminate on the instrument panel when the failure occurred. the contact had taken the vehicle to the dealer twice and each time the dealer stated that they could not duplicate the failure. the contact also stated that the automatic key fob could not be used to lock the doors because the anti-theft alarm could not be disarmed. as a result, the contact had to manually lock and unlock the doors at all times. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 65,000 and the current mileage was 71,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while stopped, the contact placed the gear shifter in park and noticed that the indicator was still illuminated in drive. the contact was able to shut the engine off but was unable to remove the key from the ignition. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing or repairs. the approximate failure mileage was 115,000.
The power steering light came on. i had no mileage or speedometer reading. i took it to mr. tire which was about 3 miles away. they put the car on a machine and found mil code u0101. they told me to take it to the dealer because there was a recall for this. i called the dealer the next morning and took it right over to them. they had the car for two days and finally called me and told me that they had to replace the tcm and reprogram it, clear the codes and retest. this was going to cost $500. i had taken this car to bob bell last june when i received the recall notice. it was repaired. after a few months i noticed that three or four times the signal came on about brakes but then disappeared and everything seemed fine. then this monday this happened.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the instrument panel gauges were malfunctioning and the power of steering would fail sporadically without warning. in addition, the transmission was shifting gears independently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who was unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and the current mileage was 53,000.
Not sure exactly when it happened, but it has been occurring for years now. i have spent thousands of dollars in diagnostics, parts, and labor trying to fix the mystery problem! i'm fed up! it seems to happen randomly and fix itself randomly. sometimes it lasts a couple days and sometimes longer than a couple weeks. the problem: my car will lose power steering, it starts shifting really hard and the gauges inside get all screwed. occasionally when it happens it just won't shift at all. it will stay in first gear. the inside gauges: the speedometer will bounce all over the place, never staying still. the radio will also get loud and quiet by itself. the power locks would frantically go up and down themselves, until i took out the spark plug for those. it is very difficult to drive when the power steering goes out, not like cars that were built without it in the first place. the very hard shifting cannot be good for the car and is dangerous when i am driving during winter months or rainy weather. i live in michigan and it snows a lot. even the chevy dealership can't tell me what is wrong and i have paid to have numerous parts replaced that have not fixed the problem. i've read other boards online with people having the same issue. i just cannot afford to keep paying to not get the problem fixed. i hate driving such an unreliable car with two young children, four years and 10 months. it happened multiple times when my little one was a newborn. felt like i was giving the poor baby whiplash when the car switched gears. it's an automatic so there is nothing i can do about it. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that while accelerating from approximately 5 mph the vehicle began to jerk. during the failure, the contact also began to hear a clicking noise. the vehicle was pulled onto the emergency lane and shut off. upon restarting the vehicle, the failure continued to occur. the power steering service light and another warning began to illuminate on the instrument panel. the contact also stated there was no steering failure even though the power steering service light was illuminated. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where they were unable to diagnose the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 25,300.
With no advanced signs or warning (mileage at 99,930), upon starting the vehicle, the traction control and security light came on. the car's rpm revved up and down and wanted to stall. the fuel gauge jumped back and forth. there was a constant clicking in the gear shift and the steering wheel locked into place where i could not turn it. i shut the car off and restarted three additional times before everything seemed to go back to normal and i was able to drive. the next time this occurred was when mileage was at 99960. after several attempts at stopping and starting the vehicle, the traction control and security warning lights went out and i put the car into gear to drive, only to be practically jerked out of my seat with hard shifting and acting light it wanted to stall when coming to a stop. i drove the car directly to the dealership and the problem continued on the entire drive there. once the car was shut off, the problem could not be recreated at the dealership and therefore i was sent on my way with no explanation of what might be wrong. the next repeat event occurred 3 weeks later (mileage 100,450) but corrected itself with several off/on of the engine. next occurrence again at 100,600 with same results. this has not yet happened while driving, but i did ask the dealership about the possibility of this happening and he said if it did, i would easily be able to control the car and pull off the road. personally, i do not want to experience this while driving 55-65 mph! the dealership said that this could be a costly fix since it is a process of elimination and no guarantees each time whatever they tried would fix it...not much confidence coming from the chevy dealership mechanic!! *ln
I recently purchased used my 2005 chevy cobalt and sunday a week after having the car gave me problems. according to the carfax report the power steering was replaced in april assuming do to the recall. but i got in my car and the power steering read across the mileage area and chimed. very little noticeable issues do to steering but when i came to a stop light it vibrated really bad and then everytime it shifted(its an automatic) to another gear higher or lower it would act like it had shifting problems. also when i would come to stops at a light or stop sign it would vibrate really bad to the point where it seemed like it would stale out. it had only stalled once. i just hope someone can resolve this issue because it seems like tons of people are having this issue. *tr
Chevy dealer replaced power steering assist, since the repair, issue has been recurring. transmission slips and knocks the car forward, power steering error appears, tachometer and speedometer short out. *tr
