Components Affected by STEERING Issues

We have classified the 113 complaints from 2010 Buick Enclave about STEERING into the following categories.

ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM 1

Recently reported STEERING problems on 2010 Buick Enclave

Power steering failed when driving on a street while turning. took it to a non buick mechanic for evaluation. he stated to take it to a buick dealership. there is a 'special consideration ' provision to repair. we never received any information on this. we took it to a buick dealership who stated it needed replaced. they would replace the pump only and we needed to pay $2200.00 for a steering gear. this is unacceptable to charge the consumer anything to fix this obvious system defect. we believe the dealership needs to pay for all repairs to make this right. but they won't since it hasn't been recalled.

At slow speeds the power steering goes in and out intermittently. the loss of power steering is only for a second or two but the sensation seems to be dangerous if the steering function did not return instantly. this loss of power steering is identical to the power steering loss that is the subject of a current gmc sierra truck recall.

Often when turning the vehicle power steering seems to loose power. it feels like i am driving a old car with no power steering. it happens at any speed. i seldom feel this from a stopped position. i seldom feel it when going straight. some times i can feel it as i slow down to start a turn. it happens most in town. it can happen when coming off the interstate to make the first turn at an intersection...but not often. i see no leaks. the fluid is at the proper level.

The steering becomes hard to turn when moving very slowly or sitting in park. this happens intermittently in urban settings. no problem observed at highway speed as yet. will be taking to mechanic shortly.

Power keeps going our intermittently during slow speeds...for example with stopped and going to make a turn or u-turn...or while in a parking lot. it will go out for a few seconds... or less then kick back in. i have seen multiple postings about others who have experienced the same problems with enclave and traverse (chevy) in the same year sets. i was on a city street when the most noticeable occurrence happened, making a u-turn from a complete stop when i could barely turn my steering wheel to complete the turn.

Steering wheel seems to lock when we turn the wheel, which makes it difficult to turn to the right or left very dangerous when making turns while driving. has happened numerous times.

Power steering randomly stops working, usually on lower rpms but sometimes just randomly stops working no matter what rpms. power steering fluid is full.

Takata recall it appears this is a power steering issue with my 2010 buick enclave. i had it looked at and now it is still making a loud noise when driving, when making a turn and it make a rough sound now my stability tracking light is popping on saying to check the stability. i was told the rack and pinion and power steering pump were replaced but it is still causing issues. loud noises occur when driving and when turning it makes a loud noise and my tracking light pops on and off.

On 6/7/2017 purchased a 2010 buick enclave cxl 116495 miles on it needs steering gear 1700.00 is the power steering pump wear the cause of the gear leaking

Steering: seems vague when in motion at highway speed. other: rear tailgate opens while driving, sitting still w/o the key in the ignition. contacted gm and customer service told me it was my problem not theirs. engine: sounds like a meatgrinder on cold start up, if the engine fails will loose steering, brakes and possibly control of the vehicle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 buick enclave. the contact stated that she began having issues with the steering that progressively became worse. there were no warning indicators illuminated before or after the failure. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion failed. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the vin was unknown. the dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000.

Engine light came on and took into dealership for a diagnosis of issue. was told that the timing chain had stretched and needed replaced with a cost estimate of $3000. this is the 2nd time that this has happened, the first being at 48k miles, and now at 95k miles. when the repair was being made, was told that the crank shaft was warped and had frayed the engine internally - caused by the bad timing chain and i now needed a new engine. contacted buick, but they would not do anything about it. buick has known about this issue for years, and yet refuses to back their product or help their customers. once the engine was replaced, i now have a loud power steering 'whine' and was told that the power steering pump needs replaced - another known issue by buick. just incredible.

Lots of information that buick should send out a recall regarding the steering rack leaks this car gets. mechanic claimed i had steering leaks, i hardly drive this car.

Power steering has intermittent failure at low speed

I have a 2010 buick enclave with 142,000 miles. i purchased it used at about 70,000 miles. overall, have been happy with the car but a few months ago i ran into a scary situation that i did not anticipate. i nearly drove into the side of another car when making a left turn from a stoplight with two lanes turning left (i was in the left-most lane and there was another car on my immediate right). my power steering quit on the turn. that night when i got home i checked the fluid and it was right in the middle of band and showed no signs of visibile degradation. i also searched online about this issue and found it is a very common problem with 2010 buick enclaves. and from what i have read it is not clear to the dealerships if this problem is a rack&pinion issue or pump or what. some have been denying there is a generic problem at all. others have confessed there is a generic design flaw in the system. i don't know if anyone has been killed due to this generic problem but i am certain there must have been some accidents! i warned my wife about the problem and have asked her to not even drive the car unless absolutely necessary. gm needs to recall and fix this problem. my trial and error testing shows the problem occurs whether turning right or left. it does not happen every time at low speed turns - i would guess 50-60% of the time. no issues when tracking straight ahead. again - a real safety hazard particularly if turning in front of oncoming traffic and it were to quit and it delays your turn time.same if turning to merge into oncoming traffic- loss of steering could delay your ability to merge and result in a rear end collision. i am 61 yo and have owned a number of cars over the years and have never lost power steering before. unless this is remedied properly by gm i am not sure i would buy another buick or gm product.

Car had 79820 a beginning of trip from indiana to florida. lost power steering with under 80k on car at beginning of trip. no low speed power steering at all, cat cannot be steered at parking lot speeds.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 buick enclave. the contact stated that the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver when making turns. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing or repairs. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 73,731.

Car had reduced speed and white smoke 11/15 41,000 miles towed to dealership and they replaced number 5 injector car. 2/4/17 car has 49,584 miles and had to he towed again to dealership same issue reduced speed white smoke, was told all 6 injectors need to be replaced, water pump, timing cover, steering gear and timing belt. this car has too many issues to have such few miles. i did call several other garages to see if they could give estimate as i don't trust dealership, they will not work on the enclave motors. there are also too many recalls in my opinion on this vehicle. after reading all the complaints there is a problem with the steering on this vehicle.

Power steering locks up while driving. clunking noise from front drivers side wheel. unstable steering and handling while driving especially at speeds above 40mph. large amounts of oil leaking into and collecting in throttle body and air intake. after two timing chain replacements vehicle has rough idle, stalls intermittently.

Mileage 85,717: driving on interstate at 70 mph vehicle lost power, was luckily able to pull off and restart to make it home. next morning vehicle would start, but immediately shut off. towed vehicle to local mechanic who stated it was stretched timing chain, common occurrence in enclave, acadia, and transverse. reported issue to gm who referred me to certified gm dealer, vehicle was towed to that location at my expense, sat there for a week before i received any info which was stretched timing chain, already known information. i called gm back who stated they my case had already been closed out for power lift gates and there was no documentation for the stretched timing chain, after 1 hour and 25 minutes on the phone i was told that there was no assistance for the timing chain that i would be responsible for the $2000 repair bill along with $105 for the diagnostic test. at this point beyond frustrated with vehicle and gm, the acadia and transverse have had their powertrain warranty extended why has this not happened for the enclave? *tr

Power steering goes in and out. will work when the car is first started but once it warms up, power steering fails. has been happening for a few weeks, local mechanic says there is a special coverage adjustment but i the only way i know about it is they found the information.

When i turn the wheel at slow speeds it randomly locks up. almost got hit making a u turn in washington dc. i was going less that 10 mph. this is happening regularly while parking and turning after stoping. it has already almost caused an accident.

The power steering stops working intermittently. without warning, the ability to steer the car becomes very difficult. this happens mostly in turns in intersections. turning the vehicle back straight out of a sweeping 90 degree turn is almost impossible until a 5 to 8 second pause elapses. this is extremely dangerous, usually causing the driver to brake heavily in an intersection for what looks like no apparent reason. this is dangerous not only because of the lack of driver control, but you never know when it's going to happen. this is becoming more frequent and it can be purposefully reproduced if the steering wheel is turned rapidly while at a low speed. also noticeable is a strange noise coming from the steering column just below the steering wheel at times, heard mostly at low speed in a quiet environment. it is a tiny somewhat vibrational sound similar to running your finger across the teeth of a very fine toothed hair comb. while this noise is noticeable and it can be felt in the steering wheel, it is not an indication that the steering is preparing to fail at that time. the noise comes and goes... it feels almost electrical in nature. the power steering pump reservoir has been checked and is full. the serpentine belt driving the pump is in good condition and has been determined to not be slipping. the rack and pinion is mounted securely and is not leaking externally.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 buick enclave. while turning the vehicle at a low speed, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering pump needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 76,000. ....updated 08/08/16 *bf

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 buick enclave. while driving approximately 20 mph and attempting to turn, the steering lost power without warning. the failure began right after a front end alignment service was performed. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed a steering issue, but did not repair the vehicle. the contact was informed that there may be a recall. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 68,000. updated 08/17/16*lj the consumer stated the steering pump was replaced and by gm. however, the consumer had to pay for the steering gears. the steering pump, caused the gears to go out. updated 08/22/16.*jb

Loss of,power steering when turning at low speed, especially to the left. intermittent issue, but usually at least once every time i drive it. have had to come to complete stop in busy intersection to make sure i get the wheel, turned enough to complete the turn.

Power steering locks up at slow speed. steering wheel is almost impossible to turn. i am concerned that it will get worse. have an appointment with buick dealer to check problem. mileage is 68,000 miles.

I was driving at 75 mph and my engine shut off; car began to slow, fuel dropped, power steering went out, brakes didn't work. i was able to, thankfully, get to the side of the road safely and use the rumble strips to slow me down. i turned the car off and 5 min. later turned it on and was able to drive to a safe location. this is a common issue and all of these conditions are related to the "limited warranty protection" that gm issued nov. 2015 (14582). this is a safety hazard. my car experienced all the other condition, malfunction indicator light came on multiple times ( may, sept), was issued a letter in nov. 2015 and then this occurred in jan. 2016. stipulation for this to be covered, under 120k miles of 10 years whichever first. my car experienced initial troubles at 110k in may and this potential fatal incident at 125. arguing with gm over this. should be a recall, not a limited warranty. seems to be an unethical company. does it take death to make this right? this has occurred countlesss times- check the internet, 100s of customers have reported this. does this have to be another toyota incident for gm to recognize this is a recall not a limited warranty! i have all paperwork showing the issues except dealer states since they can't replicate, they need the check engine light on and the car to be under 120k to determine if they should pay. gm is unethical!!!

The vehicle's power steering will, with increasing frequency, stop working for up to 10 seconds or so, leaving the driver with a car that is extremely hard to turn, and having to brake to a excessively slow speed in order to complete the turn in the space available. this seems to occur at slower speeds, such as when turning across an intersection or maneuvering in a parking lot. it occurs on both left and right turns. there is also a grinding sound that occurs at these times of power steering failure. clearly, this is a huge safety issue. one of our top reasons for purchasing from buick was their emphasis on safety for the family (we have 3 children). to discover that buick have known about these steering issues for multiple years without addressing them is deeply disturbing to me as a customer, and demonstrates a corporate ethical imbalance that clearly will not be self-rectifying. here are the steps we have taken to resolve the issue: our mechanic flushed out the power steering fluid several times, but this only moderately relieved the problem. our next step options include replacing the complete steering gear and power steering pump, but those are hugely expensive tasks without any guarantee of permanently resolving the power steering issues. research online shows multiple reports/ tech service bulletins regarding this issue occurring in vehicles with the same power steering system, to such an extent that there is a class action suit against gm. this appears to be an endemic issue with vehicles such as our buick enclave 2010, and gm need to be compelled to issue a recall notice and resolve this issue, as well as reimbursing those who have had to repair this issue themselves.

At less than 60,000 miles the rack and pinion steering needed to be replaced due to a clunking noise and leaking seals.

Check engine light went on. car was seemingly working alright, however, after fueling up, it was difficult to restart the car. in fact, at the last fill up i was unable to start the car for over 20 minutes while at the gas pump. this caused a great deal of anger, frustration, and rage in the other drivers who were waiting to fuel their cars at very busy gas station near lax. the dealership stated the fuel sensors needed to be replaced at a total cost of $1700.00. two months prior the air conditioner/heater required repair as a hose needed to be replaced due to a leak, a $425 repair, furthermore, the steering problem we seemingly had corrected 3 years ago is occurring again and is need of another repair. and lastly, 50% of the time when i turn off the engine and pull the key out of the car, the engine continues to run. the occurred around 80-85,000 miles.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 buick enclave. while making a right turn at approximately 40 mph, the steering wheel seized without warning. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact mentioned that the failure recurred several times after attempting to make a right turn. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 84,000. ma 10/22/2015

Power steering pump wear condition received a recall notice from buick september 2014 in regards to a power steering pump wear condition, but the letter advised not to take to the dealer for repair until it was an issue. the letter did not state specifics as to how an individual would know that there was an issue but while taking the vehicle to holzhauer motors in cherokee, ia (authorized dealer) on june 17, 2015 for service (lube & filter change) i mentioned to the service advisor that when i turned my steering wheel there was a whining sound. i was later contacted by the service advisor stating that the power steering pump needed to be replaced and the cost of replacing the actual pump and labor was covered under said warranty. the service advisor also informed me that the rack and pinion also needed to be replaced. the service advisor clearly stated that the reason the rack and pinion needed replacing was because the power steering pump had gone out, but the parts and labor to replace the rack and pinion was not covered under the power steering pump warranty, even though that it what caused the rack and pinion to fail.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 buick enclave. while the vehicle was undergoing routine maintenance at the dealer, the mechanic located a leak in the boot of the power steering case. the failure caused a steering speed failure. the dealer indicated that the manufacturer authorized them to repair a certain area in the steering at no cost. the contact wanted to know why the manufacturer was not made responsible for the total cost. the failure mileage was 85,250.

At low speeds, my buick enclave makes noise when turning and has failed on two occasions. there are many complaints but no recall. people will get hurt or killed due to steering failure. my car is outside of the warranty and i can't afford to fix it. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 buick enclave. the contact stated that when the ignition was turned to the on position, the service engine warning light illuminated continuously. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the timing chains failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. one week later the contact observed a leak from the front of the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the water pump needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. two days later while driving at various speeds, there was an abnormal noise coming from the steering wheel. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering pump needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 59,000.

1. while driving, vehicle entered "reduced power mode" making it impossible to maintain speed. this is a safety issue as driver loses ability to maintain speed while traveling with flow of traffic and with reduced engine power, even the ability to pull out of the lane of travel is impaired. dealer identified bad throttle body as cause and replaced. 2. power steering pump failure. issue was identified due to whining noise prior to complete failure. had pump failed completely, driver could have lost control with power assist not available while driving. pump was replaced and necessary associated repairs made by dealer. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 buick enclave. the contact stated that while making a turn, the power steering seized and the vehicle when into manual steering. the failure recurred several times. the contact received an unknown special coverage notice from the manufacturer. the dealer was made aware of the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 85,000. updated 1/16/15*cn the power steering pump was replaced. 01/20/15. *jb

Went to dealer for service was told steering rack was leaking and needed to be replaced. asked about recalls for the issue and was told their were none. i would have to pay for the entire repair. returned home to find a notice not a recall in the mail from gm about my issue. my condition is clearly associated with a known safety defect identified by gm. this is an admitted urgent safety condition and gm needs to repair these vehicles under a mandatory recall campaign and not try and find a way to not cover the cost of the repair. my wife drives this car in heavy suburban traffic and the sudden loss of power steering on a vehicle of this size and weight is a serious safety condition that can result in serious injury or a loss of life. *tr

Lost power steering at low speed. *tr

My vehicle is 4 years old 58,000 miles, started feeling resistance when turning and an screeching sound. the rack and pinion need to be replaced at a cost of $1500.00. found out this is not under warranty even though there are over 100 complaints. where does a single mother of 2 get the money to replace something that seems to be fault of the manufacturer. the gmc dealer will not assist in a price reduction, if this is not replace the car can stall when attempting to turn and cause an accident, or fatality. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 buick enclave. the contact stated that while driving at 65 mph, the steering wheel failed without warning. the driver had to place force on the steering wheel to be able to turn and keep the vehicle under control. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer to have a diagnostic performed. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 70,000.

I was experiencing rubbing and resistance when making turns at slow speeds. i was driving with 6 kids in my car and was turning left across a major street and the power steering failed as i entered oncoming traffic. i was able to get the car turned. got home and checked the steering fluid was empty. i refilled the steering fluid and it began leaking. took the car to my mechanic and they found that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced ($1,000) and there is a service bulletin about the boots getting wet from some steering fluid, but my vehicle the steering fluid leaked so badly that the steering fluid needed to be refilled daily. the steering components in this vehicle are faulty and creating very dangerous situations. after searching online there are many many complaints from customers on similar dangerous situations of them turning into oncoming traffic and the steering failing. it is only a matter of time before something tragic happens. my vehicle is a 2010 with 65,000. it should not have this sort of issue. it is no longer covered under manufacturer warranty. *tr

In the course of annual state inspection and tending to recall issues, was told that the power steering was leaking. had not noticed any problem with it. because was a safety issue got repair done; warranty expired (of course) so ended up paying $1400 for replacing power steering rack (including 4 wheel alignment). contacted gm and they did partially reimburse under "special coverage". that seemed pretty decent of them but not so sure now in light of all the complaints listed re power steering in the enclave in general and the 2010 enclave in particular. there clearly is an issue with 2010 enclaves (and maybe acadias and traverses) and the power steering assembly. there should be a recall issued. *tr

Total loss of power steering at low speeds. every time we slow to about 5 mph or less to make turns at corners, stop signs or curves we loose our power steering. extremely difficult to park vehicle or navigate parking lots. very unsafe when other vehicles or pedestrians are in the proximity. *tr

Slowed to turn right on a green light. as i slowed during the turn, the power steering failed not allowing me to turn the wheel. i was forced to veer into oncoming traffic from the cross street missing another vehicle coming at me by a few seconds. seems like the exact recall gm recalled in april 2014 except my power steering is hydraulic not electronic. *tr

At low speeds as in trying to park or waiting to make a turn from the stopped position, the steering becomes very stiff. it feels as the power steering has stopped working and is extremely hard to turn. *tr

Vehicle power steering fails at slow speeds/ most preveaent when turning, parking and etc. very dangerous. *tr

Our car has noisy power steering wheel, hard to turn. went to dealer on 08/02/14 and was told that we need a new steering gear because of leaking and that will cost 2100. our car only has 68,000 miles on it!!!. this is manufacturer defective and it is not covered by factory warranty. this is not cheap car, gm should know this issue and still make car for sale with cheap materials. we have no choice but will have to pay since this can cost death. we will not buy any american car from now on, try to support american auto industry but really? i decided to search on google and found out lots of complaint regarding power steering wheel 2010. we need help to get these recall and fix it!!! before multiple accidents this may cause. *tr

When driving at low speeds, the steering would lock up when turning. a test drive by my mechanic resulted in a new steering gear 36r0450. when i researched steering problems on the 2010 buick enclave, i found a lot of information about the steering problems on the 2010 buick enclave. my mechanic said this needed immediate repair because it was a safety item. i believe this needs to be a formal gm recall. *tr
