My 2002 acura tl with automatic transmission which has only 59,851 miles on it. i bought it from the original owner 6 years ago, and since then i have only driven about 11,000 miles. the well-known 2002 tl automatic transmission design flaw is now causing big sudden jerks and the car shooting forward, thus creating a huge safety issue to me and the generic public. initially a rep at acura client relations (1-800-382-2238 option 4) told me to take the car to an authorized acura dealer for diagnosis. i had the car towed to kearny mesa acura, paid $130 for a written diagnosis, and faxed it to acura client relations. the rep said as the car had only 59,851 miles on it, he would take my case to his management. but my request for help from acura was later denied, citing their extended 109,000 miles and 7 year 9 month warranty had expired. i wonder why acura cannot man up and take responsibilities for their faulty automatic transmission on 2002 tl models. how can acura use an arbitrarily-set warranty expiration date to ignore the huge safety problems on their cars? ...
My son purchased a new 2004 acura tl from the elk grove ca dealership with money he saved while in the navy. he has had the car and maintained it through the end of last year but has been aware for awhile that the transmission is in need of replacing. there was a nhtsa recall (04v176000) april 15, 2004 for power train transmissions like the automatic transmission in my son's car and motor trend magazine posted that it potentially 1,000,796. we believe that our son's car has the same problem, whether or not the vin was in the exact lot selected for the official recall. when my son got out of the navy, he moved around quite a bit while finishing his bachelor's degree and did not receive any information regarding this matter from acura and did not hear about it otherwise. we have taken the car to the fremont, ca acura dealership but they are refusing to acknowledge any culpability or replace the transmission, though there are obvious, well-known, historical transmission issues with acuras. refusal is, of course, the first line of defense in corporate america, but we hate to see his hard earned ...
Dear safercar.gov, i have a 2003 acura 3.2 tl navi. it has approximately 132,800 miles on it as of 30 november 2013 (car is in shop, so i can't verify exact mileage). on saturday, 30 nov 2013, i took it in to acura, because the engine check light is on. i also asked that the transmission be checked, because it didn't seem to be engaging correctly. this model as well as other acura model vehicles, etc, had a previous recall on the transmission (2004). i also previously had to have the car towed (26 aug 2004) to acura because the transmission failed while driving and the car broke down. the car has been well-maintained - body and mechanically, i had the 120k service performed on 22 october 2012, where mileage was 125,226. on 11 march 2011, i had the transmission fluid flush service performed. the service record states "flush entire unit of all old and suspended debris using a safe and effective cleaner to dissolve the varnish and gums in the transmission & torque converter. install new transmission fluid to factory specification. today (01 dec 2013), i was told ...
2002 acura tl. consumer writes in regards to vehicle transmission problems. *smd the consumer believed she purchased one of the few acura's that had a defect in the material and/or workmanship of the transmission that went undetected when replacing the oil cooler return line during the recall in 2004. she believed the damage was already done to the transmission and in her case; the discoloration of the line because of overheating had not occurred or went un-noticed. subsequently, only the line was replaced and the transmission was not further inspected. the consumer stated it would seem that flushing and changing the transmission fluid would act only as a temporary fix or band aid to the problem and several miles down the road, the same problem would occur. the consumer brought her vehicle in for service because, the d5 light was flashing , the tcs lights were on, and the check engine light was on. also, she experienced hard shifts, after first gear, usually first to second, and then one last shift into third, upon take off from a stop, and while increasing speed on an incline of a freeway entrance ramp.
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 acura tl. the contact stated that the vehicle was taken to a mechanic for routine maintenance and he was informed that there was a transmission leak on both sides of the mount. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who inspected the failure and advised that the transmission needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was not notified. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 80,000. updated 04/30/13*lj the dealer discovered the leak was coming from both side of the differential and the axle was loose. updated 05/20/13
2001 acura tl. consumer states transmission jerks and bucks while driving *tgw the consumer stated just prior to attempting to back into his driveway, it was difficult to get the vehicle in reverse. there was some smoke in the engine compartment and fluid was leaking in the transmission area. the consumer discovered recall # 04v17600 was issued, but honda was not forthcoming about the recall and whether it had been performed. the dealer informed the consumer, the transmission had an internal failure and it was recommended that the transmission be replaced. *jb updated 05/01/12
The d5 on the transmission started blinking, the the engine light came on along with tcs light. the shift from lower to higher speeds was bit jerky or slow. i took the car to the dealer for check-up. on diagnostics, he gave me the codes p1739 and p1750. the recommendation was to replace the transmission - cost 4200$. this problem was highlighted in a 2002 memo from acura , however, in my case, the problem shows up at this mileage and i am not covered. i spoke with aamco which apparently acura does not endorse and they said that torque failure is common on honda transmissions. *kb
Transmission does not shift smoothly anymore. it seems that 2nd gear is gone. the check engine light comes on too. it has the rpm go high before shifting. *tt
The remedy outlined in campaign 04v176000 did not resolve the manufacturers safety defect for my vehicle. per the recall, my transmission had an oil cooler return line installed in december 2004 by sterling acura of austin. i replaced the transmission fluid at 47000, 71000 and 107000 miles. in august of 2011 at 133000 miles, my vehicle suddenly started stuttering and hesitating when up shifting from first gear. the vehicle would also lurch forward due to unexpected down shifts at moderate speed. depending on the traffic and driving conditions this could have resulted in a collision, luckily in my case it did not. however, other owners impacted by campaign 04v176000 may not be as lucky since it is likely a matter of time before their transmission eventually fails for the same safety issues raised in 2004. *tr
I recently purchased a 2007 acura tl type s with 42378 miles on the odometer. upon getting home, i found out that the dashboard was cracked in three (3) places. fortunately for me, the car was still under warranty so i took it in to acura dealership to get the dashboard replaced. while at the dealership i found some other customers with the same issue. i later found out that this was common problem with the acura tl especially in the southern states. another issue i'm experiencing is with the 3rd gear which i also found out to be common with the acuras. sometimes while driving, the stick would not go into 3rd gear smoothly or sometimes it just pops out of the 3rd gear. the third and final complaint that i have read about and starting to experience is rattling. the interior cabin of the car though quiet from exterior noise seems to be making some noise of its own from the inside starting with the windows. i hope someone at acura is aware of these problems and is dealing with the issue. beside that, the car seems to be a fine piece of ...
