Volvo XC90 Typical Problems: D5 Engine Issues

Volvo XC90 Typical Problems: D5 Engine Issues

The second generation of the Volvo XC90 has been in production since 2015. Unlike its predecessor, it relies exclusively on four-cylinder engines and hybrid drivetrains. A facelift was introduced in 2020, succeeding the XC90 I.

Volvo XC90 Engine Problems: Petrol

Available models include the four-cylinder T5 AWD and B5 AWD (201 horsepower), T5 AWD (340 horsepower), B6 AWD (402 horsepower), T6 AWD (415, 429 horsepower) and the top-range T8 series (406, 415, 426 horsepower).

So far, there have been no significant reliability issues reported with these engines. While the twin-charging system – comprising a turbocharger and supercharger – in the more powerful variants is sometimes viewed as a weak point, there have not been a concerning number of failures.

Diesel options include the D4 (255 horsepower), D5 AWD (301, 315 horsepower), B5 AWD (315 horsepower) and the top model D5 AWD Polestar Performance (321 horsepower).

The diesel engines have not shown any serious weaknesses (apart from numerous recalls, which are listed below). However, typical issues such as injector problems or dual-mass flywheel failures may arise, particularly at high mileages.

The air suspension can start malfunctioning in cold temperatures. Symptoms of a defective air suspension typically include the vehicle sitting too low, warning lights in the dashboard (even while driving), or the vehicle failing to maintain its height.

Volvo XC90 Recalls

The Volvo XC90 II has been subject to multiple recalls. Below is a list of recalls affecting a significant number of vehicles. Detailed information can be found through KBA or ADAC:

  • In 2016, nearly 11,000 XC90 models in Germany were recalled due to water ingress caused by a defect in the air conditioning drain hose. When inspecting the vehicle, one should check for moisture in the footwell (both driver and passenger side).
  • Models from 2016 to 2018 were affected by a software deviation leading to the transmission of incorrect location information to emergency services in the event of an accident.
  • Another recall affects diesel models from 2015 to 2017: Here, the plastic intake manifold can overheat and deform, leading to engine interruptions or power loss.
  • Models from 2015 to 2016 were recalled due to cracked fuel hoses.
  • The Automatic Emergency Brake (AEB) system can fail under certain conditions. This issue, which does not affect the conventional braking system, impacted 58,600 various Volvo models in Germany built between 2019 and March 2020.
  • According to KBA, a fault in the engine control unit can prevent the combustion engine of the hybrid model from starting. This affects models from 2021 and 2022 and can be resolved with a software update.
  • A software error can lead to a failure of the brake power assist. This affects models from 2022 and 2023.

Our Recommendation: XC90 with a Used Car Warranty

The powerful gasoline models T6 and T8 feature engines equipped with both a turbocharger and a supercharger. The T8 additionally employs an electric motor, further increasing the complexity of the powertrain. If considering purchasing one of these models, it's advisable to think about obtaining a comprehensive used car warranty to avoid high repair costs. Prices start at around $25,000 in the common used car markets.
