Problems with 2010 Volkswagen Jetta ENGINE

On average, the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 72 272 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2010 Volkswagen Jetta

2010 jetta tdi. driving on road at about 35 mph when car suddenly stalled. glow plug light flashes, "service engine now" on display. traffic was light and speed was enough to coast to safe location. car would not restart. towed to dealer. dealer replaced some relay part but.... the very next day same thing. car died while driving. same symptoms as above. again no warning prior to stalling. towed to dealer. dealer had car for a few days but could not find or reproduce problem. checked ground connections as advised from vwoa technical assistance. returned car to me with a 'let's wait and see' attitude. third time, about 1500 miles later, same thing. this time on highway traveling at about 45 mph in heavy traffic. car towed to different dealer. at the moment they can't diagnose or reproduce problem. my opinion is some fault is telling computer to kill engine. as a safety issue, i would think engine should remain running so that i can safely drive off the road and out of traffic and harms way. if this assumption is correct, then there has to be a limited number of reasons why engine should stall, instead of going into 'limp mode.' my research found reference to pe10034, but can't find article. three times car stalls without warning. all 3 times on road. this is a safety concern, and local dealers seem hesitant to request help from vwoa ta. dealer 1 did contact vwoa ta for support and guided fault finding didn't find anything. dealer 2 still has no clue. no mandates on local vw dealers, by vwoa, to keep and share service records beyond warranty period, on national database, so other dealers have no idea what first dealer did. keeping all dealer service records on national db will help spot issues sooner. dealer 2 will hopefully ask vwoa ta for support beyond what dealer 1 did. is there an escalation for this? what are my options? *tr

2010 vw jetta sportwagen tdi. car lost power at highway speeds. "glow plug" indicator illuminated and hud displayed "service immediately." was able to safely pull over to shoulder. car would not restart. had to be towed to nearby dealership. informed today that high pressure fuel pump (hpfp) had failed and would be covered under extended warranty. will be without car for 5-10 days. car is located 1 hour away from home. rental car was offered, but i would have to get out to dealership to pickup. this is the second occurrence of hpfp failure on vehicle. similar occurrence (loss of power on highway) happened on march 24, 2011. again, car was stuck in dealership far from home. *tr

On 6/7/14 at speed and in traffic car suddenly died, glow plug indicator flashed and service engine immediately message appeared on the dash. car restarted right away and was able to finish trip without further incident, took to dealer service center and they replaced glow plug and wiring harness. on 6/10/14 also at speed and in traffic car suddenly died once again, glow plug indicator flashed, no message and no check engine light. once we came to a complete stop, the car restarted and we finish trip without further incident. i have scheduled another appointment with vw service department. *tr

Vehicle will stall going from reverse to drive or from park to drive. also from while accelerating there is sputtering that i need to release the accelerator and then apply again to keep it from stalling. *tr

I was driving down the road when i accelerated hard and i predndio light of "glow plug" on the panel, the car lost power and was limited to spend two thousand rpm's coming home that was close. i did nothing that night, i followed turning on the light in the panel. the next day i turn it normal, i turned on the light ... then it caught me way to work again and i return to my home, i turned on and off and it caught and never turn off. take it to the vw service center and was told that the pump has fault injection and particulate throughout the fuel system. tell me that the repair will cost more than 4000 dollars ... and the worst is that no warranty. *tr

Driving on 2nd lane of freeway. sudden loss of power - all warning lights come on dashboard accompanied by bells and dings. pulled over to side of road - fortunately traffic not heavy. engine was still running however no forward movement when pushing accelerator pedal - engine just revved. turned car off then restarted. warning lights still flashed but was able to put car into drive and start rolling - vehicle was in "limp" mode however and would not go over 10 mph. vehicle was towed to dealership where it was diagnosed and the ecu reset. dealership unable to recreate problem. on 8/16/14 the same thing happened as i was pulling out of my driveway. the vehicle was again towed to dealership where it was diagnosed with a faulty abs control unit for an estimated 2500.00. *tr

Vw tdi engine: a poorly designed diesel engine particulate filter (pf). vw is irresponsible in designing, selling and supporting repairs to this item. cost for 100k scheduled maint. for timing belt and other pm work @ $3,127, pf is expected to fail between 90k and 130k miles and is on record to be a pm replacement part in the service manuals. check engine light started coming on at 90k miles. my mechanic reset light twice. i eventually took it to vw and gave them a copy of the service bulletin, provided by mechanic.vw insisted it was both exhaust pressure sensors at $607 this was wrong, light on in 4 days. cost to replace the pf is $6.2k. at 100k miles this car has cost me $9,863 for vw schld. maint.. repairs that vw recommends to be done to this car. vw customer relations said nothing they can do and suggested i go to nhtsa. 1. vw advertised tdi engine as the cleanest emissions in the world! 2, we expected pay-off through excellent gas mileage and low cost ownership. at 100k miles a deisel should just be breaking in. results of vw selling the vehicle and not supporting its customers: a. vw has stuck me with a car i can not sell or take a dump on resale. who wants to buy a car with a check engine light on? b. i keep cars and keep them maintained so i get high mileage out of them. even if i did the pf repair at $6k i would be looking to do it again at 200k miles. there is no value to cost of ownership of this car!! c. i could go to my mechanic and reset the check engine light and sell this car near resale. unfortunately the vin no. is on record with this issue. nor do i have the conscience to do that. vw is an irresponsible car manufacturer!!!!. how can you sell a car that requires his much scheduled repair work??? vw you have screwed me and your customers!

When i approached a red light i pushed the clutch in and started to slow down. i was in the turn lane and there was an opening as i started moving feet from clutch to fuel pedal. the car lurch and came to a stop. the car had died while i was slowing down to get in the turn lane. i have called the vw dealer and they have no idea on why the car did and is still doing this. i don't feel it is safe for me or for my family, i am a firefighter and i really truly believe that the car is going cause an accident or kill us. the car has shut off on its own over twenty times in the last few months. it doesn't happen every time that the clutch is depressed, some days it doesn't do it at all. other days it is every time or every other stop. when traveling at highways speeds the jetta lurches like it is out of fuel even thou it has a full tank. all of the cars maintance is up to date per the dealer. *tr

I was driving down the street when dash lights came on...within minutes i lost power and eventually my car shut down. my hpfp went out and has sent shards of metal throughout the system. apparently to the grand total of at least $7500 possibly more. i've been reading and see this is an is with the vw tdi motors i drive a 2010 vw jetta tdi... at this point the fuel system needs flushed and or replaced i'm questioning the condition of the rest of my motor if metal pieces have been flushed through it. *tr

While driving my 2010 vw jetta tdi at 45 mph the glow plug light began to flash with no warning and engine power became dramatically reduced. i was unable to maintain speed on a busy roadway and was forced to make an abrupt exit from the road to avoid causing an accident. using back roads with low speed limits i was able to reach a volkswagen dealership. after arriving the vehicle could not be restarted. after 3 days of inspection it was determined that the high pressure fuel pump had failed and the metal shavings from the failed pump contaminated the entire fuel system and clogged it with rust. even though the vehicle was out of warranty, volkswagen of america covered the cost of the repair which entailed replacing the entire fuel system. the technician informed me that this was a known problem with the type of high pressure fuel pump installed on my car which is why vwoa was covering the repair even though the vehicle was out of warranty and there was no recall. given the high potential for injury when this known fault occurs, i do not understand why all vehicles (which include all 2010+ audi and vw tdi engines) that feature this faulty fuel pump have not been subject to a recall to have the problem repaired. *tr

The car had been parked in the rain for approximately 90 minutes. i started the car and drove slowly through the parking lot. the engine stopped without warning and required that the car be brought to a full stop and the ignition turned off before the car could be started. the car ran fine after being restarted. this is the 6th incident of this kind that i have experienced. *tr

I was driving on the freeway (at speed) on my way to work when my 2010 jetta tdi suddenly stalled. i was lucky that the engine did not lock up as i would have been rear ended. however, i continued to coast at speed. i was able to coast over to the shoulder. the car would not start. i contacted a tow truck to tow me into the dealership. the dealership informed me that the inter turbo cooler was damaged due to the cold weather. i was also told that due to the cold weather ? they had seen this same occurrence at least 4 times that day alone. upon further research, it appears that a large number of owners in the us have experienced not being able to start, difficulty starting, and engine failure to due water being drawn into the engine from water condensing in the intercooler. https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=207335707442566723762.0004b73a15cae256f489f&msa=0&iwloc=a this has caused cars to suddenly die while driving on public roads and highways with the potential of suddenly being hit by fast approaching traffic. it also seems evident that volkswagen has known about this issue since last winter. there appears to be numerous tech bulletins on the subject. *tr

Was backing out of a parking space and then placing the car into drive. as i pressed the accelerator to pull away, the car started sputtering like it wanted to stall out. immediately took it to dealer for scan and no codes found. car has done this since and no codes again. last incidence was last week and as i pressed the accelerator, the car sputtered so i left off the gas. upon pressing the gas pedal again, car shut off and the battery light on the car came on. placed car in park and it started with no incident from there. took the vehicle to dealership and again no codes so they will not repair. i am scared this car will shut off in traffic leaving me in the middle of the road. still waiting on a decision from vwoa regarding the safety and driveability of the car. *tr

2010 jetta sedan tdi --> fuel leak --> day prior ran normal. went to start and did not start. thought was the battery. charged emergency starter for 4hr and attempted again with no avail. called a friend who is a diesel mechanic to help start it. hooked to his truck and still no start. i noticed wet underneath the front passenger wheel and thought nothing of it since it was parked on the street, so water possibly. it started to snow. went and purchased a new battery. installed the battery, after battery install still did not start. attempted 2 more times. since it was not the battery he began to look elsewhere while i attempted to start and yelled at me to stop. i go to the front of the auto and he shows me where the diesel is pulsating out and that is why it is not starting, it is not getting to the engine. i then look around the car and with the snow, i then notice a long green path of diesel fuel along the road. i called vw, paid the 84$ to tow to vw dealer and they could not look at it until a week later. my concern is the gas leak. i should technically have over 54k on the vehicle, i am not even close to those others for sale on the market. i am not upset since no bodily harm was done, however the leak is in great amount. i do recall a couple of days earlier that i was going through gas quicker. i fill 1x a month, with 4 days i was through a quarter of a tank but it did not click. this is me notifying you of my gas leak. the car never started and there was no fire but there is concern due to the leak. my mechanic friend stated that he had no idea what the part was called that was shooting out the fuel and to take to a authorized vw dealer which i did. i still have 5 days till they can even look at my car. *tr

Came to a stop at a light and the car was fine at first. then, all of a sudden the rpms started bouncing around and the car turned off. it wouldn't turn on for about a minute and i was able to drive off. the incident has happened again on at least 3 occasions. name-brand diesel has always been used, full maintenance has been followed including fuel filter replacement and dsg transmission service. *tr

Driving on highway on 12/15/13 and as i accelerated, i lost power and "check engine light" came on. car fell to 50mph and i exited highway immediately, stopped the car, re-started and the car and light was still on. showed error code g450 and the "exhaust pressure sensor 1" was replaced by dealer in january 2014. glow plug light also came on intermittently at that time. two months later (february, 2014), "glow plug light" came on again intermittently. turned off car and started it again and light went out. dealer says p0237 code means intermittent failure of "boost pressure sensor" and "sensor harness". vw advises the car is not drivable due to unpredictable performance of turbocharger on engine performance due to failure of this sensor. the loss of power has been documented widely for this engine (pump, carbonized intake, other?), but vw has accepted no responsibility for the problem. car is 4 years old with 48,900 miles. repairs are approaching $1000 at this time. *tr

Driving at about 40 mph with about 1/4 tank of gas when car started to sputter and run rough. the glow plug indicator light began flashing and i pulled into a nearby parking lot where i shut the car off. i restarted the car and pulled out of the parking lot but car immediately began to run rough and lose power again so i pulled into a gas station lot where the car refused to restart. called a tow truck and got car towed to autobarn in countryside (where i bought the car). tried to restart car again at dealership and noticed the fuel gage was reading "empty", meaning fuel had leaked out since the car died. dealer called me the next day saying my high pressure fuel pump had failed and my entire fuel system from the gas tank on up to the injectors had to be replaced. was covered under warranty and dealer was very helpful and did the job in four days, during t-giving week, which i was very satisfied with. i always get my diesel at bp amoco's or mobiles and make sure to use heavily trafficked station to have the best chance of getting fresh fuel. i am not comfortable driving the car and have considered trading it in due to vw corporate's seeming indifference to the problem, which is well documented online and there are many many cases similar to mine. shortly after i bought the car i noticed that all the fuel stations in my area went from 5% biodiesel to 20% biodiesel. i asked the dealer at the time about it because the owners manual states vw will not warranty the car if anything more than 5% biodiesel is used. the dealer said vw would warrant it and a written statement from vw came in the mail shortly thereafter. i can't help but wonder if the higher biodiesel percentage led to the failure. *tr

on oct. 4, 2013 the high pressure fuel pump failed while i was driving. the glow plug light started to blink, i started to pull over planning to shut the car off and restart it to see if the light went off. before i got pulled over the engine died and would not restart. it had to be towed to the dealership. it could have been a very dangerous situation had i been driving in high speed traffic on the freeway. the high pressure fuel pump failure sent metal shavings through out the entire fuel system. all pumps, injectors, fuel rails, filters, lines all had to be replaced. the fuel tank had to be cleaned and lines all flushed. thankfully it was covered by vw 60000 mile powertrain warranty. i have read about a lot of other people who have had this happen. it is very dangerous when your car just dies going down the road and will not restart. *tr

When making a left hand turn car stalls. dash panel lights go out and battery warning light flashes and car shuts off. car has to be completely stopped, ignition turned to the off position and put into park, before it can restart. very dangerous when driving in high traffic areas. you don't have time to pull over. the car just dies! *tr

I was driving on the highway and the check engine light came on. the vehicle would not hold speed or accelerate. i pulled off the highway and the vehicle stalled out and would not restart. we replaced the high pressure fuel pump and fuse box. the car still will not start after a new fuel pump and fuse box, and we have been told that the wiring harness needs to be replaced. *js

Owned my 2010 vw jetta sport wagon tdi 6sp man since new. it has always had an interment cough & sputter that would happen at any speed or condition, but was very infrequent an non-repeatable. now however, starting at around 85,000 miles, the cough and stall has become more frequent, causes the glow plug indicator light to flash and the vehicle loses power (goes into limp mode?). this used to all reset when turning off the key. the last time i brought it to the dealer, parr imports in bremerton wa, at 89,802 miles it had p0322 & p0651 fault codes. they suspected an intermittent crank sensor fault and wanted me to monitor. it has progressively gotten much worse, i have now lost power in heavy traffic and stalled in the parking lot pulling onto the road and have had to switch vehicles when it would not reset leaving the house. i was compelled to buy the torque application for my android phone to view and reset fault codes. i have not reset the ecu faults at least 4 maybe 6 times and now, at around 92,000 miles, it shows 5 codes and won't reset: p0322: ignition/distributor engine speed input circuit no signal, p2127: throttle/pedal position sensor/switch e circuit low input, p0193: fuel rail pressure sensor circuit high input, p0651: unknown code - more information may be available on the web, p0300: random/multiple cylinder misfire detected. my internet research suggest the high pressure fuel pump (hpfp) may be an issue with vw blaming it on gasoline contamination, however i have records and receipts confirming i always fuel with diesel from a major distributor. *tr

At 60,000 miles we noticed a decrease in acceleration and gas mileage in 2010, vw jetta tdi. the dealer said they fixed the issues, but we only saw a slight improvement in the vehicles performance. in between the 60,000 miles and now 113,000 the car has been diagnosed to have the egr valve, dpf filter, all sensors,. nox and sox burners to be replaced at a total cost of $10,000 dollars. when we purchased the vehicle the dealership said that the dpf filter would only cost us $1000 dollars to replace, try $4000 just for it. we have taken very good care of the care and feel that vw has misrepresented themselves in the vaule of the vehicle and the upfront repairs. the radio, all doors actuators and trans have been repaired on this car. it has been a money pit.

The 2010 vw jetta sportwagen tdi (with dsg automatic transmission) was decelerating on a turning lane from a two lane highway from speeds of 55 mph to 15 mph. there was an audible "click" and the engine stopped and only dash lights were operable. no discernible dash light or error code message was received. the vehicle restarted after the transmission was placed in park, and the ignition key was again turned on. again no messages or warnings appeared on the dashboard. note: the seat heater was engaged (driver's side), air conditioning on, turn signal (left) activated, headlights on, bluetooth for phone linked, radio was operating until the shut-down. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 volkswagen jetta. the contact stated while driving 25 mph, the vehicle stalled with the illumination of the check engine light. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where it was stated the fuel system and engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 77,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 volkswagen jetta. while driving at various speeds, the vehicle stalled after the gears were shifted and the check engine light illuminated. the failure recurred multiple times. the vehicle was restarted and driven to an independent mechanic. the technician diagnosed that the clutch kit inside the transmission needed to be replaced. the contact stated that the failure was directly related to nhtsa campaign number: 09v333000 (power train). however, the vin was not included in the recall. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 30,000.

I stopped at a light after exiting the interstate and the vehicle stalled....i was almost rear ended. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 volkswagen jetta. while at a stop light, an abnormal noise could be heard coming from the engine without warning. the contact stated that the vehicle hesitated prior to the engine failure. the vehicle had to be towed. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was confirmed that the engine was defective. the high pressure fuel pump relay needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was approximately 10,000.

Pulled on to highway and vehicle suddenly stalled in middle of intersection. engine went to idle. no throttle response. after several pedal presses it took off. *tr

While on vacation and backing up in the hotel parking lot, braking, then putting it in drive, the car would stall out; it happened 3 times in one day. luckily, i was only in a parking lot while it stalled out instead of in traffic, which could have been a big hazard. went to the dealer, and they didn't know what is wrong. *tr

Last year, engine light came on even though the car was driving fine. i took it to dealer and said problem was due to defect in exhaust flap. he asked me to pay $770.00. luckily, there was recall on the same a month later. dealer fixed it, but engine light still is on. he told me that one of oxygen sensor is faulty now caused by exhaust flap problem and said it is not covered by recall and asked to pay $550.00. vw refused to correct the problem. now, i can't even inspect the car. present problem is caused by another recalled defective problem. *tr

Bought tdi from ed martin honda in indianapolis. drove the car home. 30 minutes later, car would not start. starter would crank, but engine would not fire. started the next morning with no issues. drove to indianapolis, about 40 miles. 2 hours later i went to leave, car would not start. after 40 minutes of cranking off and on, it finally started. drove straight home. 3rd time drove to walmart, 3 mile trip. car took 20 minutes to start. *tr

My wife was driving her 2010 vw jetta s/w tdi dsg home from work and she noticed that it seemed to be running a little rougher then usual (in december when we had the 40k service done we were told that it needed a fuel filter and that would solve the problem...it did for about a week or so). when she slowed down for traffic the rpm's would fluctuate between 500 rpms and 1400 rpms and nearly stalling at times. finally when she got off the exit ramp near home, the jetta stalled and a check engine light came on. once she was home i found that it was reading code p0263. the jetta went to dealer on 3/13 and we got it back on 3/22. unfortunately it stalled out on my wife on 3/23 after a short trip across town while dropping my son off at his friends house. she preceded to come home after dropping him off as the stalling issue occurred while making a turn and she was nearly broadsided by a suv! had the vehicles collided, it would have been a direct impact to my wife and son's seats! the next morning i took the jetta out for a drive to see if i could duplicate the problem and boy did i ever. thankfully the dealer is close by and i was able to get the car there but not without issues. it stalled out on me 4 times in the 1.5 mile trip. i too was nearly hit by an on coming car while making a turn. not to mention it stalled while trying to merge onto the highway getting to the dealership. during the first visit for the stalling problem, vw had the dealer drain my full tank of diesel as they thought i used bad fuel and this was not the case. next they reprogrammed the fuel injectors and that did not solve the problem. so vw had the dealer replace a fuel regulator valve and that did not work as well. after two more times of reprogramming the fuel injectors the light apparently went out a so vw of america and the dealer felt it was fixed and safe for us to drive. i think not! *tr

While driving my jetta (diesel), the engine has stalled on multiple occasions. the first time it had stalled, my jetta was only 1 month old and i took it back to the dealer. the dealer found nothing wrong and stated that he had never heard of this issue occurring. the jetta stalled again over the subsequent 12 months of owning it and i once again took it to lee volkswagen dealership in fort walton beach. the maintenance manager stated nothing wrong. the jetta stalled a 3rd time just recently while i was making a right hand turn. i had children in the car and i was very concerned with their safety. in addition to the stalling issue, my jetta (over the first 2 years of owning the car) has had a new battery, new compressor and new interior lighting mechanism installed. i am very disgruntled with the repeated safety issues on this vehicle. the stalling makes me uncertain of my safety or my children's safety while driving this vehicle. it should be recalled and money refunded to the individuals who have purchased this model. *tr

The vehicle had driven fine all day when all of a sudden when i pulled up to a stop sign, the car died like it was running out of gas. i was in the middle of a the road at the stop sign, the car managed to start again and drive another couple hundred feet to get it off to the side of the road. luckily i made it just past a set of rail road tracks. the car did not start again and had to be towed. the vehicle had its entire fuel injection pump system replaced along with the sensors. mechanics have told me that the pumps should last the life of the engine. *tr

When an engine stall occurs, this car requires a full reset before a restart can be performed. this is very dangerous when said reset happens while the car is moving. meaning ' a full reset means the ignition key must first be fully turned off. when the car is in motion and the key is fully turned off, at that time the locking gear in the ignition switch engages and locks the steering wheel... while the car is in motion!!! this is a common occurrence in the manual shift transmission models. *tr

2010 vw jetta tdi common rail engine stalled while cruising at highway speed southbound on i-390 between geneseo and rochester, ny. when two attempts to restart car as normal failed, it was towed to dealer and repaired by replacing fuel injectors in cylinders 2 & 3 according to injector fault code that was generated. vehicle was returned to me, then exhibited same systems again. towed back to dealer whereupon discussion with vw tech line had dealer replace turbo intercooler, possibly due to extreme condensation and ice build up in the intercooler referenced by vw tsb # 21 12 01/2025464 frozen air charge cooler. after intercooler replacement, dealer notified me that the car is still exhibiting the same symptoms. discussions with vw tech line resulted in notification to me that the engine wiring harness seems to be the problem and advises replacement of that for $988 including parts and labor. hydrolock and catastrophic engine damage due to excessive condensation from emissions system design seems to be the more logical explanation, especially with the 112 and 234 pages respectively of posts of people with the same complaints on these well known forums: http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?5574701-tdi-intercooler-issue-design-flaw&p=75723976&viewfull=1#post75723976 http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=302863. *tr

On friday jan. 11, 2013, the vehicle (2010 vw jetta tdi) in question was traveling on an expressway at a speed of approximately 50 mph when suddenly the glow plug light and check engine warnings turned on the vehicle display and shortly afterwards the engine stalled. the vehicle stalled in the middle of the road but no accident occurred because there was no other traffic at the time of failure. attempts to start the engine failed.vehicle had to be pushed to the side of the road. vehicle was towed to service location to be diagnosed and results were indicative that the fuel pump failed catastrophically rendering the vehicle inoperable. excessive metal shards were evident on the fuel filter. vehicle has not yet been repaired pending a response from the manufacturer. same vehicle stalled in traffic after bought new at approximately 8000 miles on the odometer in 2010 but engine was able to be restarted. volkswagen dealership service department performed diagnostic for the 1st stalling incident and said there was nothing wrong. no service was performed to check fuel system at that time. *tr

I have had 3 different bouts with my jetta stalling seemingly randomly at highway speeds. each set of incidents resulted in a service trip to the vw dealership for repairs. for the first incident the vehicle was under the 60,000 mile warranty and an expensive repair was covered under warrant. the second series of incidents occurred about 6 months later, after the car was no longer under warranty and the repair - replacement of the cam shaft position sensor. another series of incidents has just begun and i'm headed to the dealership again. all 3 series of incidents had the same symptoms: 1) the car intermittently stalling unexpectedly during acceleration and 2) slow chugging start occasionally when the car is warmed up. *jb

The vehicle was valet parked. the valet attendant reported that the vehicle shut down as she was driving it up the ramp out of the parking garage. she also reported a knocking sound and that the "check engine" light was on. upon entering the vehicle, i was unable to start it. i had the vehicle towed to the vw dealership. they told me that the high pressure fuel pump had failed and that they had seen other cars coming in with this same problem. service department paperwork states: "defective high pressure pump-metal in system" and "found fault p0191." vehicle speed at time of incident is estimated based on valet attendant's description. *tr

Happened last night, with my 6 yr old daughter in the car, and wife driving on the freeway! check engine light, and fuel injector/glow plug light blinking, car shutdown, but fortunately was able to pull off to the side but still next to freeway on/off ramp. car would crank over but not start. called aaa tow to vw dealer where the car was purchased. i drove the car earlier that morning on a fairly long trip (over 100 miles), and started noticing the fuel economy wasn't as good as i normally would get (40 mpg), but it was raining heavy that morning so that's what i attributed it to, but only seeing 30 mpg after all freeway driving was suspicious to me. vw dealer said the high pressure fuel pump failed and contaminated the entire diesel fuel system and all the parts will need to be replaced and fuel system cleaned out. *tr

The car abruptly decelerated from 65 to 35 mph on a major interstate as the engine went into 'limp mode'. the sudden deceleration caused swerving and i had to pull over to the curb in order to avoid an accident. the coil/check engine light turned on and car hesitated as it drove. this is the third incident that this car has had with the exhaust problem causing engine to force deceleration and abrupt stopping even stalling. the system this time diagnosed a defective exhaust control module/flap. the previous emissions issue while the car was under warranty involved defective egr valves. problem seems to show up every 10-15k miles on this diesel model. *tr

Glow plug light came lit on dash and said "service engine immediately." engine then lost power on interstate (dangerous). when re-cranked, engine was sluggish and would not accelerate above 40mph. vw service said it was due to a faulty fuel pump. *tr

First incident: occurred in fall 2012, exact date unknown. slowing to turn right, vehicle stalled without warning. power steering was not responding. it was taken to dealership the next day. vehicle was evaluated, nothing was found. we were told that they could see some sort of power interruption, but could find nothing wrong with any of the systems involved. second incident: occurred about 1 months after first incident. while slowing to a stop, intending to make a left turn out of parking lot, again vehicle stalled without warning. did not take car to dealership, as it had just recently been evaluated. gas was < 1/8 tank filled, and parking lot exit was on a slight decline, suspected maybe it was related to low fuel, and we tried to keep the car above 1/4 tank full at all times thereafter. third incident: occurred 4/29/14. slowing to pull into a parking space, again engine stalled without warning. i noted that the battery indicator light on the dashboard lit up slightly before or as car was stalling. power steering failed as well when car stalled. radio / heater / other electronics seemed unaffected after a brief flicker. fourth incident: occurred about 20 minutes later on 4/29/14. slowing for a stop light, vehicle stalled unexpectedly. car is due for inspection, appointment in 2 days. dealership asked to investigate stalling as well. *js

High pressure fuel pump failed traveling 60mph, car begins to stumble (more often then every hundred miles-now less than every 5 miles), engine almost dies out multiple times, rpm drops to near zero, check engine light turns on, hundreds of mini metal flakes found in fuel system/fuel canister . car driven to dealer (showed picture of metal in fuel canister). hamilton imports (vw dealer) had initial tech on 081412 diagnosis problem as "normal for diesel fuel." called 081512 to service manager john, left message, he replied stating metal in fuel is "normal." on 081612 email vw of america, in regards to the problem, call from service adviser on 081712 and are looking further into the problem. later that day, called service adviser, they ordered a complete fuel system and apologized for the initial delay and not fixing the car correctly. received a call from the dealer, 082812, the car is ready for pickup. a complete new fuel system was installed (injectors, high pressure fuel pump(failed), fuel rail, electric fuel pump in tank, all piping). *tr

2009-2013 model year volkswagen tdi vehicles sold in the united states contain an exhaust restrictor valve that controls the regenerative feature of the diesel particulate filter (dpf). this flap is experiencing abnormal failure rate between 25000 and 70000 miles. volkswagen is denying claims to replace these exhaust restrictor valves when they fail, and is asking customers to pay for replacement. long-term malfunction of this valve results in non-compliance. the valve design has been updated several times, indicating that a defect was present in the original design. reference: http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=275066. *tr

While driving on the highway with cruise control engaged at/around speed limit, i noticed the rpms jumping and could feel the car jerking, as if some kind of acceleration/deceleration was happening. i also notice rpms jump 50 up/down while idling. this seems to happen when driving down hills on cruise control, more prevalent in colder weather. no loss of control has occurred, but appears to be issue that is slowly worsening. *tr

Egr valve: check engine light came on, code p0401 for egr valve. dealer said they tested it and it was "sticking". not covered under emissions warranty. failed at 45k miles. vw part number is 03l-131-501-k. $700 repair. *tr

While driving 65 mph on the freeway in oakland, ca, the engine malfunction light came on, my car began to slow down, and as soon as i exited the freeway the car stalled and stopped altogether, and would not restart. i was towed to the oakland vw dealership. they informed me that the fuel pump had failed, and had to replace the fuel pump, filter, fuel lines, etc. the dealer said that there were shards of metal throughout the fuel lines. this appears related to nhtsa engineering analysis ea11-003. *tr
