Problems with 2010 Volkswagen Jetta ENGINE

On average, the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 72 272 miles.

The timing chain system in my 2010 volkswagen jetta wolfsburg edition failed, rendering the car immobile. fortunately, the vehicle was in a parking lot, as failure in a road could have caused an accident. based on readings, this has happened to multiple cars with the same engine and has resulted in a class action lawsuit against volkswagen.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 volkswagen jetta. while driving 50 mph, the vehicle failed to stop when the brake pedal was depressed. the driver had to engage the emergency brake to stop the vehicle and the anti-lock brake system warning indicator illuminated. the driver was able to coast the vehicle to the side of the road. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that oil was leaking from the engine and the brake pedal was temporarily repaired. the vehicle was later taken to dublin volkswagen (6085 scarlett ct, dublin, ca 94568, (925) 829-0800), but was not diagnosed or repaired due to the diagnostic and repair fees. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

When driving this vehicle it will at times hesitate and stumble severely to the point where you will have to pull over. no check engine light or codes noted when scanned. problem started right after vw tdi emissions fixes. vw dealer claims no connection.

Second failure of intake manifold. vw has admitted to a manufacturing defect but only extended warranty. had the manifold replaced at 50,000 miles roughly. unit failed again at 150,000 miles. i dont believe they originally fixed the problem. vw is placing high cost on owners to replace after 120,000 miles. repair runs higher than $800.00. failure to replace this part can deem the car unsafe.

While driving anytime that we would slow down or put the vehicle into reverse the vehicle would go randomly in neutral. it was randomly this would happen and became more frequent. took it to a dealer and they said we would have to have the transmission replaced soon. right before this their were about another $3,000 worth of issues we had to fix.

Not able to turn key in the ignition. sometimes not able to start car. sometimes not able to turn car off.

Driving on interstate highway for greater than 30 minutes, there was onset of strong rain conditions at about 30 minutes of driving time -- the epc light came on and the ability to accelerate was lost. symptoms of downshifting were noted just prior to onset of issue. depressing the accelerator resulted in rpm increase with no acceleration in relatively fast traffic (>50mph). was able to pull off safely and shut vehicle off. very dangerous situation in high speed/strong rain conditions. epc light turned off after shutoff and re-start, and i assumed a slip on wet surface. restarted and attempted to rejoin traffic. traveled less than 50 feet and epc light re-lit with no slip, followed immediately by lighting of the 'check engine' light. same lack of acceleration and increased rpm with depressing throttle pedal was noted. turned off engine on shoulder again and restarted after five minute period in attempt to get home and was able to very carefully/slowly merge back into traffic with check engine light and epc light lit for entirety of trip home (>50 miles). vehicle drove for additional approximately 50 miles without symptoms onset. vehicle currently has approximately 50k miles and is driven once every week or two weeks. all service is performed regularly. i researched this symptom set online, only to find hundreds of complaints similar to mine across the spectrum of vw models indicating no precise diagnosis relative to these symptoms coinciding with thousands of dollars of repairs in attempt to reconcile. i do not care to spend thousands of dollars attempting to repair an issue that cannot be identified using a 'trial and error' method on a vehicle that kbb values at less than 5k. based on my limited research, this very dangerous issue should be some sort of recall. i have researched recalls on my particular vehicle and have noted nothing relative.

My key has been difficult to turn in the ignition to start the car recently. yesterday i had the same problem but the car started. after driving the car the key would not turn to turn off the car. no matter what i can not get the key out of the ignition. i only got the motor to shut off because my son knew to pull a fuse and then take off a battery cable. this ignition problem is serious and is a safety issue if you can't turn off the car.

Engine of my car caught fire after a short drive, luckily my daughter was able to pull it on our drive way and move away safely before engine caught fire. we had to call fire department to put off the fire.

Ignition system keeps failing. car keys get stuck and car won't turn off and having a hard time tuning the key to start the car. each time the car is parked and the steering lock is disengaged.

The gas engine car stalls out when stationary, in motion, on city streets and highways.i turn ignition off then start the car again and go on to my way to the next stall. it is not bad gas and mechanics and dealerships are still guessing what wrong.

Diesel fuel filter is clogging up and was told that it required replacement at a cost of $7,000.00.

My wife's 2010 jetta 2.0t tsi experienced an engine stall and complete loss of power while driving at approximately 40 mph on a straight section of city street. this was a routine trip under clear weather conditions. with no traffic behind her, she safely coasted to the side of the road. after waiting 5-10 minutes she was able to restart the engine and, with no check engine lights appearing, drive approximately four miles home. the following morning, upon starting the engine, multiple cylinder misfires began occurring and the engine was immediately shutoff and the car was towed to the dealership for diagnosis. the dealership discovered that the stall was due to the timing chain tensioner failing, which allowed the timing chain to skip six teeth on the camshaft and the valves to contact the pistons resulting in the engine self-destructing. they recommended a nearly complete engine replacement at a cost of over $8,000. the car was purchased brand new in 2009 and has been maintained impeccably as specified by vw. speaking with the dealership engine technician, we learned that the timing chain tensioner is a known defective part by vw and that in 2011-2012, was revised several times in an attempt to mitigate the failures. a technical service bulletin was issued by vw to dealerships and service departments explaining the issue but no notices or recalls were sent to customers informing them of this potentially deadly component failure. i have read, but not independently verified, that vw has issued a recall for this specific component in europe. since the beginning of 2016, and owing to the significant safety hazard, as many as three class-action lawsuits have been filed against volkswagen for this specific component failure. we are thankful no one was seriously injured or killed when the car stalled during operation, but now we are facing over $8,000 in repairs.

Car kept stalling after take off when you accelerated. when taking it to the repair shop it would not start and had to be towed there. when they got it they discovered all but 1 quart of the oil in the engine was gone. they determined that this malfunction damaged the engine and the engine would have to be replaced. have the oil changed every 3-5000 miles and it wasn't due for an oil change for another 1000 miles or so. they have no idea why this happened and volkswagen won't do anything about it. all of this took place in the city. we were to afraid to take it out on the highway. car has 109000 miles on it and has been a lemon from day 1. this was just the icing that topped the cake.

Attempted to start my car on a cold day with low fuel. the engine was jumpy and didn't start. i waited and attempted again and was able to get it started, drove 500 feet to the gas station, filled with diesel. the light then came on after i started it again. i checked the code, p2015. i took my vehicle to dorschel vw in henrietta, ny. they confirmed the code said the intake manifold needed to be replaced. saying the flap is damaged and then switching to say the runner is damaged. most of the tsi engines have had their warranty extended, but not for my tdi. there are lots of others complaining of this code popping up.

While excelerating from a red light my car went into "limp mode" and lost most of its power. i could not drive faster than 40 mph or 2400 rpm. i contacted vw dealer and they instructed me to drive the vehicle in which was only 8 miles from my house. enroute to dealership my car lost all power and shut off in the middle of the road. i could not start the vehicle and had to get it towed to the dealership. upon inspection, it was found that my high pressure fuel pump had failed which caused my turbo to also fail. the fuel in the tank was not contaminated, this was just a failure of the system.

Car lost acceleration getting on highway from on ramp and then died in the lane of traffic. speedcraft dealer said the engine hydrolocked and that the recommended fix was an updated intercooler and that this was a known issue. there was a tsb that was issued regarding this issue. updated 02/05/16*lj *cn

P2015 - intake manifold position fault. intake manifold valve malfunctions and sticks causing a severely rough idle and engine stall. the car was attempted to be started after sitting overnight in a garage. the car successfully turned over, but was in a very rough idle for a few seconds before stalling. car could not be run continuously at all at this point. this problem began to occur around 80,000 miles, with no initial performance impact, but the part ultimately had to be replaced at 88,000 miles when the incident described above occurred.

Dealership performed 90k mile checkup. also asked them to determine if cel p0472 was covered by warranty. they confirmed code, and said not covered under any warranty. the also advised the car is showing intermittent code of p0638 for throttle actuator control (bank 1). written on the estimate by vw dealership is "technician noted that while driving vehicle into the shop, vehicle had no throttle control and would not increase in engine speed. technician recommends replacing the throttle body and exhaust pressure sender. technician recommends customer not to drive vehicle --vehicle will at some point stop driving (moving) - it could stop moving at any point, including crossing a intersection". i have not had any issues whatever with my throttle, but due to their documentation, it appears there is a safety issue here deserving of a mandatory safety recall.

Jetta hpfp. in early 2013 my jetta tdi had to have the fuel pump replaced due to a defect in the materials. the issue has just happened again, same symptoms. only this time volkswagen is claiming the fuel pump failed due to contiminated fuel. my insurance company denies that fact and is pointing the finger at vw for a faulty fuel pump. the repair is upwards of $5000 and volkswagen is not offering to cover it. my car is now sitting in disassembled state at the dealership while i am paying for a rental car and my insurance company and vw play a ping-pong match of passing the blame. *js

I had been driving my car for one hour. i made a quick stop at my house to pick something up. i pulled back into the street and started to drive down the road when my engine shut down in the middle of the road. i had to push my car to the side of the road. multiple attempts by myself and a tow truck were unable to restart the car and it had to be towed. after extensive troubleshooting, the dealer determined my engine control module had failed and had shut all power to my fuel injectors. luckily, i was not traveling very fast at the time nor was there any surrounding traffic. this cost ~$2000 to repair.

Oil leak on brakes vacuum pump. usually a cheap defective o-ring resulting in big oil leak

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 volkswagen jetta. the contact stated that there was an internal leak from the motor associated with the engine, the driver side low beams shorted several times, and the skid warning indicator illuminated. also, the traction was poor and the suspension and steering were loose while braking. the vehicle was taken to a mechanic for diagnostic testing. the vin was excluded from nhtsa campaign number: 16v913000 (service brakes, hydraulic, electronic stability control). the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was not available.

Transmission jerking from 1st to 2nd gear set off glow plug/check engine light. turned off ignition. warning light reset. jerking continued in gear 1st to 2nd and 3rd to 4th.

I was driving at freeway speeds and my check engine light came on. i took it into the dealer only to find out that it was the dpf (diesel particulate filter) failed. the filter was plugged with carbon. the dealer admitted to me that this was a known defect and bad engineering that affected models 2006 - 2010. they told me it fails every 100-110k miles and has to be fixed! i told them i would take it elsewhere to get fixed as i wasn't paying that kind of money. they informed me no local shop would touch it. that is not true other than the local shop had to bring it to them for the "software reset". i have since learned it may affect later models but cannot confirm. the dealer wanted $2300 to fix plus tax.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 volkswagen jetta. the contact stated that while driving at 50 mph, the vehicle stalled. the contact was able to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to a dealer but the contact was unsure about what part needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. however, the failure recurred and the check engine warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer who diagnosed that the gasket, sealant, the oil separator, the timing chain tensioner, the timing chain, the timing chain case cover, the timing rail tensioner and multiple other unknown parts needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 90,000. the vin was available.

Turbo failed on tdi

When traveling on i10 freeway at about 70mph the engine went to half power i tried to get to a dealer ship but before i could the engine quit while on the freeway. this was caused by a defective fuel pump. on my tdi jetta.

I took my 2010 jetta tdi in to have the ecm reprogrammed per the notice i received from volkswagon that said the egr might not be read properly. the next day my check engine light came on. i called the dealership and today i had them look at it. they are advising me that my diesel particulate filter is cracked and has been for a while and needs to be replaced. the light only came on after the reprogramming. volkswagon knew about an issue with the ecm and now i am stuck paying almost $2000.00 to get it fixed. there are a lot of other people having the same issue.

Car is throwing p0401 fault code for egr valve insufficient flow. dealer states the diesel particulate filter is cracked. according to data, vw's emissions scandal shows 40% more pollutants spewing into air. this is causing excess emission part failures. dealer wants $2500+ for repairs. according to vw forums, there are many cases of egr and dpf failures. contacted vw and they will not assist. my car is due for smog 10/22/2015 and is not passing.

Incident occurred when approaching an intersection. engine died as if the car ran out of fuel. tried to restart the car but the car would not turnover. it would only crank. acted like it ran out of fuel but there was half a tank of fuel.

Pulled away from stop sign into traffic. engine quit as if fuel was cut off. coasted to side of roadway. car would not restart though it did crank. about a third of a tank of fuel, 80k service was two weeks ago. car had to be towed to shop.

I was driving my 2010 vw jetta to work when all of the sudden it began to violently shake. my check engine light started rapidly blinking. luckily, i was able to pull into a parking lot. called vw dealership. they suggested towing my vehicle. vehicle towed to dealership. according to the vw dealership, ignition coils need to be replaced. the vw dealership told me that there is not a recall for this repair. however, i noticed that there was a recall for faulty ignition coil in previous years for the jetta. i think vw should issue a recall for this problem. this is a safety hazard.

My car keeps throwing a p0401 code egr insufficient flow. the dealer told me its might be a cracked dpf filter. after looking on vw forums about the problem its going to be around a $3000 fix. since the car is not a "clean diesel" as advertised the system is getting clogged due to the fact the car computer fake software

While driving, glow plug indicator flashed rapidly, indicating engine malfunction. car experienced a reduction in power. after parking in parking lot, car started up and appeared initially ok, but then experienced total engine failure after driving <300 feet. car was towed to mechanic. mechanic indicates that metal fragments/flakes were found distributed throughout fuel system/engine, consistent with failure of high pressure fuel pump. mechanic stated that this condition was consistent with pictures/description found in technical service bulletin 23 14 03.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 volkswagen jetta. while driving approximately 50 mph, the shift lever independently shifted to neutral and back into drive. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, who diagnosed that the spark plugs and igniter coil needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000.

I was driving my 2010 vw jetta tdi in a parking lot, slowing down at less than 5 mph to stop. all of a sudden, the engine stalled without warning. no warning or check engine lights came on at all. i had to put the car into park to restart it. since this incident, the engine seems to be sputtering at low speeds. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2010 volkswagen jetta. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 37 mph, the engine and the glow plug system warning lights illuminated. in addition, the vehicle failed to accelerate. the vehicle was towed to a impound lot. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 40,000.

While driving home from work, about 30 minutes into a 40 minute drive, driving about 30 mph, in 16 degree f weather, my vehicle, a diesel with a 6 speed manual transmission suddenly stalled. i was able to engage the clutch, go to a lower gear, release the clutch and re-start the engine. with the engine bucking and hesitating, i was able to drive the rest of the way home. the next morning, the vehicle would not start. i had it towed to a vw repair shop where they found a completely blocked intercooler, full of ice. doing some research, i have found that vw has a tsb to correct intercooler icing, which involves replacing the original factory unit with a new intercooler design. as i looked on vw forums, i found that many drivers have had similar unpredictable failure due to intercooler icing. when i requested vw correct this design flaw at their expense, they refused, claiming the vehicle is off warranty. i would like nhtsa to look into this, as i feel vw needs to either make a safety recall, or correct the problem on any car on which it occurs. this problem strikes me as similar to the recent gm ignition key failure issue. thank you for your consideration. *tr

Went to start and loud clunk noise & engine would not turn over. several pieces if ice were found in turbo intercooler area. in shop now. known design deficiency that vw never informed us about. $1800 to implement tech bulletin with no reimbursement from vw, that is if engine is not ruined. *tr

I was driving to work in my 2010 vw jetta sportswagen tdi and was in a middle of an s turn when my car shut off, as i was coasting i tried to restart my car, when i did so my steering did not work. i was able to negotiate the s turn, but my car would not turn on. i had it towed to my dealer and they checked it out and said that there is water in the inner cooler due to condensation from the air intake. to me this sounds like a design flaw since when i inquired what will prevent this from happening again, they responded that the air intake part has been redesigned to prevent this from happening again. this was a very scary ordeal. if i did not have my wits about me i could have ended in the woods, luckily i was able to navigate the s turn. when i contacted volkswagen they where willing to pay 75% of the cost even though i requested that they should cover the whole repair. regardless, i am concerned what happened to me could happen to someone else with a less favorable outcome. what if this happen while crossing an intersection? i am hoping that you are already researching this issue for a recall, if not i hope you will look into this issue. thank you for reading my complaint. *tr

Vehicle lost power in heavy traffic, 50 mph speed zone. check engine light illuminated, loss of turbo boost with resultant lack of ability to maintain speed. internet search suggests a widespread problem involving icing and water ingestion through the intercooler in cold weather operations. apparently may result in engine destruction. the safety ramifications are obvious and it is my understanding volkswagen has been reluctant to honor powertrain warranty coverage. my dealer quoted $1100 to repair with a retro-fit kit. to protect the owner's investment and to rectify an obvious safety issue, i feel a recall is in order. *js

On my way home from work i was cruising down at the interstate with the car on cruise control. everything was fine the first 45 minutes of driving then all of a sudden my glowplug light illuminated and started flashing meaning engine malfunction. my vehicle started losing speed all of a sudden on the interstate which could have easily caused a crash. luckily i pulled the vehicle over on the side of the road and the vehicle just stalled out on me. now volkswagen is saying the high pressure fuel pump sent metal shards into the fuel system and it all needs replaced and they will charge me 8000 dollars. i cannot be blamed for the failure of a fuel pump on a car with 40000 miles.i never allow the tank to go below 1/4 of a tank. there have multiple reports of peoples high pressure fuel pump going out and sending metal shards into the fuel system. this is very dangerous and could get someone very hurt or could possibly result in death. something needs to be done about this. *tr

Driving around city street. jetta began to lose power and the glow bulb indicator began flashing. after turning off and restarting the car i drove for another two blocks then the glow bulb indicator came on again paired this time with the red battery indicator. after that the car rolled to a stop and would not turn back over. *tr

I was driving my vw jetta tdi on a local surface street in heavy traffic when my car died with no warning and initially would not restart. fortunately i had enough momentum to coast to the side of the road to avoid being in an accident. i was able to restart the car and resume after a few moments. this has happened once more and is disconcerting. i always purchase fuel from name-brand and high-volume gas stations. i believe this to be related to nhtsa action number : ea11003. *tr

Failure of the high pressure fuel pump in a vw jetta sportswagen tdi. volkswagen made the repairs under warranty, for which i am appreciative. however, i am concerned it will happen again. *tr

Was driving my 2010 vw jetta sportwagon tdi at approx. 55 miles per hour when my service engine light came on and glow plugs started flashing. car began to buck as if not getting any fuel through the system. car stalled out on highway within a minute of the service lights flashing and will not restart. luckily the cars behind me barely avoided hitting me as there was zero warning. had to be towed to my garage, expect diagnosis tomorrow but after reading up on other complaints i am pretty sure they will report back that it is a hpfp issue and the system will need replaced. *tr

Driving along when a warning light came on( epc) which is electronic power control. on my way to the dealer now. *js

Car in shop for approximately 11 days. although car out of warranty, fixed with authorization from vw of america as a "warranty" repair at no charge to me. bad fuel not an issue (tested). hpfp and all major fuel systems/lines cleaned or replaced. high pressure fuel pump failure.
