I put vehicle in park and got out to close a gate on my farm property. when i realized the vehicle started rolling backwards, i tried to get back in to stop it. the door knocked me down and pick up almost ran over me. i did a backwards summersalt to get out of the way of rolling pickup. when i was finally able to get up and get to pick up, it had slowed due to the jack knifing of the bale buggy i was towing. plastic and rubber in the shifter had to be pushed back inside shifter case before i could put back in park position. later that same day, i put in park in parking lot and it jumped into reverse again. luckily i was still in vehicle. i believe the problem is in the shifter console but actual problem is unknown. this has happened a total of 4 times. twice i was out of vehicle. twice i was still in drivers seat. only one time did this problem result in injury.
Traveling at 65mph - 70mph 12/26/19 2pm pst highway 5 northbound gilman dr ca slight uphill grade, pushed wiper control up to mist position, trans downshifted to 1st or 2nd instantly engine redlined and extreme driving measures were taken to maintain vehicle control until trans shifted up releasing power train to role normally, no accident occurred as no other traffic was around at that moment, vehicle went from 65mph + to 30mph in seconds, was able to recreate at a lower speed with same results, drove directly to toyota service center in carlsbad ca without touching any other controls, service center left voice message next day that they had replicated failure and were replacing trans, sending removed trans to toyota corp for testing and research, service center informed me i needed to communicate with corp i ordered to have a complete drive train evaluation and a root cause report, have voicemails and emails to document
I own a 2005 toyota tundra with just 60,000 miles. in 2014 toyota was allowed to put a band-aid on a problem that needed a tourniquet - applying a rust converter coating to a frame that, because of their failure to manufacturer it properly, deserved replacing. i was told by toyota (case number [xxx]) that because the previous owner took the band-aid they were no longer liable until the government forced them via further government safety recall actions to do more. my hope is by writing this that the government can be proactive and solve this safety concern before they have to collect enough death and accident statistics to take notice of this issue. not only that, i see that toyota is being offered the same band-aid solution on a number of new models with the same issue - proving that they didn't learn any lesson just how they can get away with actual murder. the result will be more vehicles in 5 years in worse shape due to the lenient reconciliation mandated by the government. do not put more lives at risk in order to save a multi-billion dollar companies bottom line. ...
The rear axel and differential housing/casting is corroded thru such that oil is leaking through the differential hub onto the roadway and resulting in a loss of gear oil within the differential and axels. after driving on the highway this oil was observed on the spare tire (mounted under the bed) and up the back of the bumper. the service representative at one dealership i approached to discuss the cost of repair indicated that they have seen the problem multiple times. this obviously should not be happening and i believe it to be the result of a defectively designed/manufactured component. i have not yet had the vehicle repaired due to the high cost, but it is not driveable as the differential will not hold gear oil.
Tl* the contact owns a 2000 toyota tundra. while the brake pedal was depressed to the floorboard, the vehicle failed to stop. the vehicle was placed into neutral in order to be stopped. the contact looked underneath the vehicle and noticed that the frame was rusted. the contact also mentioned that the shifter was not functioning properly. the contact mentioned that the gear selector would not move to the desired gear. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the contact was informed that the vehicle was not safe to drive due to the rust, and that the brake line and shifter cable needed to be replaced. graham toyota (1515 w 4th st, mansfield, oh 44906, (419) 529-1800) was called and stated that the frame was previously repaired per an unknown recall. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing or repairs. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. the failure mileage was 117,000.
Vehicle parked on boat launching ramp 25-30% slope concrete surface with 24 foot aluminum trailer in tow; boat off trailer, truck facing away from water, trailer closest to water. sunny, ramp was damp, with some wood and aquatic vegetation on ramp. vehicle was in 2 wheel drive. after unloading boat using a launch cord and pulling boat onto ramp, depressed brake and moved shifter from drive to park. park engaged and stepped from vehicle when truck began to roll backward. lunged into cab, saw shifter was now in neutral! was able to reach shifter and attempted to put into park. gear shift moved to park but vehicle continued to roll and i heard an audible clicking from transmission area. truck (and me) continued backward into lake, almost drowned but for help of a good samaritan on shore. when truck recovered it was in park, wrecker operator had to manually bypass this to load on flatbed. my prior 2019 tundra crew cab did same thing i cannot believe this happened. in 2007 on your site someone reported same tundra issue under controlled conditions. something is wrong with this truck's transmission. ...
