We have classified the 11 complaints from 2006 Toyota Tundra about STRUCTURE into the following categories.
Frame rusted, toyota will not replace. never sent me inspection notice, they say i missed my opportunity. not happy, disabled and only transportation. covered for a certain amount of time, but was never notified.
Severe rust corrosion in one spot of frame on drivers side of vehicle. it was brought to my attention by maintenance mechanic and he brought me in to see it myself while the truck was up on the lift.
2006 toyota tundra purchased new from toyota dealership in central pa; one owner. customer purchased dealer offered undercoating due to known climate conditions of central pa in order to prevent undercarriage corrosion. same dealership (under new ownership) carried out corrosion inspection campaign in 2015; dealer conclusion-apply additional corrosion-resistant compound to frame (did they actually apply anything?). pa inspection at independent garage in 2019 failed for frame corrosion (but no perforations?). vehicle taken to place of purchase to repeat inspection; dealership also failed vehicle for pa inspection due to frame corrosion; suggested sending it to additional toyota dealers for additional inspections and to call toyota corporate. (note-failed areas and other inspection areas are now completely devoid of corrosion protection due to removal by inspection mechanics). called toyota corp., they can't/won't help. supervisor to call back. so far, toyota will not rectify the issue. there are 100 year old ford model t's on the road with frames that are perfectly healthy in pa, but a piece of junk made in the usa (which has been less than useless for the last 40 years), foreign owned corp.,13 year toyota is scrap!!! obsolescence and second class citizenship consumer products should be illegal and meant only for the billionaire class to experience! failure at 106,000 miles.
My 2006 tundra has a hole in the frame due to rusting out which has made the passenger side sway bar to come detached from the frame. toyota advised me this model year is not part of any recall for the known frame rust issue with toyota trucks and refuses to assist in any way to address this issue. completely unacceptable when toyota is fully aware of the frame issue. toyota case # [xxx]. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Informed that frame has developed rust issues. vehicle was coated by dealer in 2014 with corrosion resistant compound following a letter indicating toyota was aware of this issue.today my mechanic following routine maintenance showed me the rusting frame.10/24/19. i took vehicle to thompson toyota service and was informed there is no recall on this years model. i called toyota and was informed it's not covered. it is upsetting that previous years were covered and sequoia models are covered. .
My truck was recalled for rust underneath and was sprayed with under coating at that time. there is a lot of rust popping through where the bolts hold the bed to the frame. rust is coming through several places including the bed frame bolts next to the cab. is there anything that toyota can do, since this started with a recall? A few years back had taken the truck in for the frame recall. underside of the truck was quite rusty and was hoping for a new frame to be put on. instead, was informed by the dealership that that was not going to happen for my truck. instead, the frame was to be "undercoated" to protect the truck from further rust. the dealership also informed me that the current procedure from toyota, at that time, was to only undercoat the cab of the truck and not the entire frame. dealership stated that they would be undercoating entire frame which they did do. after getting truck back from dealership looked underneath and saw that entire frame was sprayed with some form of black material. now this undercoating is peeling off and the frame is rusting again.
Frame rot on my 2006 toyota tundra
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tundra. while the vehicle was undergoing routine maintenance, the independent mechanic discovered that the subframe was rusted and corroded. the vehicle was then taken to toyota of brookfield (20655 w. capital dr, brookfield, wi) where it was diagnosed that the frame needed to be replaced due to the rust and corrosion. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. the failure mileage was 145,000.
The frame of the truck is rusting away too quickly
This vehicle had the frame recall done by a local dealer - toyota of nashua in nashua, nh - and the dealer performed the undercoating remedy poorly, and not per the guidelines of the recall. within a year the undercoating started flaking off, and i now have a 2-3" hole in the frame, caused by rust. recall undercoating was done in 2014. dealer is telling me there's nothing they can do, toyota is telling me the same thing. they're letting me deal with my own rusted frame that they should be responsible for.
Cross member of the frame has broken due to rust
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tundra. while approaching the vehicle, the contact noticed something hanging underneath. he discovered that the bracket near the rear of the vehicle used to hold the fuel tank was corroded and becoming detached. the contact called girard toyota (located at 543 colman st, new london, ct 06320, (860) 447-3141) and was informed that there was no recall. the dealer was not contacted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 75,000.
63,000 miles frame is rotting out
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tundra. the contact stated that there was significant rust accumulation on the frame of the vehicle. an independent mechanic discovered the rust upon inspecting the vehicle and warned the contact that it could lead to a potential safety defect. the contact spoke with waite toyota (18406 us-11, watertown, ny 13601) and the manufacturer and was informed that the vehicle was not included in a recall. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 120,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tundra. while driving various speeds over a pothole, the frame fractured and the motor mount dropped down. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the dealer was not made aware of the failure. an independent mechanic stated that the frame needed to be repaired due to holes and corrosion. the vehicle had not been repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 120,000.
Just had truck inspection done by my mechanic and he told me there is a problem starting with the frame. he said contact toyota that there was a frame recall. so i did they told me there was nothing they could do. asked to speak to someone in charge and got a call back. was told my truck was sprayed with the anti corrosion spray in 2014. but apparently it didn't work. why did toyota skip certain years of the tundra? toyota did a recall on the same year sequoia as my tundra. they have the same frame. i don't understand and i can't be the only one with this problem something has to be done
Toyota frame rust: i was informed by my local mechanic today that my 2006 toyota tundra will not pass virginia's yearly safety inspection because of hole in the frame as a result of corrosion. my truck participated in toyota's limited service campaign d0d in 2014 and a rust resistant coating was applied to combat a known corrosion issue with their truck frames. i was told the frame was inspected, found to be clean, and the coating applied. i contacted toyota and was told "there is nothing we can do for you". i have found existing lawsuits addressing this exact issue on other toyota models including 2007 and 2008 tundras. the settlement in these cases involve complete frame replacement. it is obvious to me that toyota knows there is something wrong, but choosing to do nothing.
My 2006 tundra is like new in all respects but one; all toyota recommended routine and periodic maintenance performed by copeland toyota for 13 years; frame has failed due to corrosion. upon frame recall for corrosion in 2014, copeland indicated frame was "not that bad" and said they would just apply corrosion protection coating instead of replacing frame. i trusted and accepted their advice. since then, toyota forums indicate spray on coating exacerbates corrosion problem. copeland replaced power steering unit last year; when i looked under truck to see new unit, was shocked at condition of frame. next routine service appointment i asked copeland for their opinion on frame corrosion and they told me frame has failed. poor condition of frame was obvious; stabilizer bar had pulled out of frame. how much more work would they have performed and charged me for if i had not brought subject up?? this is a safety issue! copeland sent me to toyota .com for help; toyota.com offered no assistance and pointed finger at copeland for their decision not to replace.
I received notification from toyota 4 years ago that my tundra had a potential frame issue regarding rust. i was instructed to bring it to a dealer for inspection which i did. i was told it would be inspected- if frame was intact but just rusted they would treat it with a coating , if it there were holes in the frame it would be replaced. my truck was at the dealer ( boch toyota norwood ma) for several days. i was told frame intact, it was treated with rust proofing and coating. last week the brakes failed- it took it to my mechanic and was told the brake line was rotted through causing leaking of brake fluid. there was no accident. when he replaced brake line he told me frame was rotted with large holes in several areas. i brought it back to dealer- told nothing they could do. i called toyota and they told me the same.
Feb 2019 - toyota tundra at 92k miles was inspected by nj toyota dealership after owner complained of steering issues and concerns on the condition of the frame. toyota technician inspected frame and noted "unsafe to drive" due to rust, perforations, corrosion in frame and steering rack no longer attached to frame...."vehicle is unsafe to drive" may 2018 - same tundra w 78k miles passed virginia safety inspection from private station april 2018- same tundra w 78k miles was inspected by md toyota dealership service department..."frame rusted out in numerous spots. truck not safe to drive" april 2018 - same tundra w 78k miles is given a result of "pass" by private md inspection station (no mention of frame condition) march 2018 - same tundra w 77k miles was inspected by a private md inspection station and truck failed..."struts/shocks completely rusted, rack and pinion mounting rusted out, dangerous, brake hose rusted connection, frame compromised by rust...and frame of truck fails"
Toyota tundra frame is completely rusted through. purchased vehicle in 2016 immediate after warranty expired and previous owner did not have the frame replaced. rust damage on the frame was not bad. we had it undercoated for protection. now there are rust holes and toyota will not take responsibility for the extreme amount of rust on the faulty frames. the 2006 sequoia frames were recalled due to excessive rust, but the tundras were not, even though they have the same frame. when we took it to the dealership they told us they are not responsible for it and then marked our vehicle as "undriveable" in their system without our permission. we now have a vehicle that is worth $0 that was worth $8,500. toyota corporate also refused to do anything to repair the vehicle. *tr *tr

My frame is rusting badly and there is metal separating where the leaf springs mount to the frame
Frame has rust holes . had to replace rearend housing due to rust holes.

Had truck towed due to broken brake line and was advised by mechanic that frame was severely corroded with holes above front wheels and was not safe to drive. rear end also severely corroded. contacted toyota dealer, no warranty or recall on 2006 frames although tundras and tacomas older and newer than 2006 are getting warrantied frame replacements due to recalls. dealer went to the garage that had towed the truck and inspected the frame. dealer advised us to get holes in frame fixed at our expense. dealer verified that there was an earlier recall to spray frames, but the spray had limited availability from toyota and they were unable to fulfill the recall when we brought the truck to them for this service. the vehicle currently has 150,000 miles on it and should have been drivable for many more. we lodged a complaint with toyota usa on 11/14/2018, complaint# 181 114 1536 and are next entering a complaint with the nh attorney general.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tundra. while driving approximately 10 mph and approaching a stop sign, the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard when it was depressed. the contact coasted the vehicle to a field until it finally stopped. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. when the vehicle was placed on the lift, the mechanic noticed that the frame was severely rusted, including all the other components beneath. the vehicle was taken to kinderhook toyota (1908 ny 9h, hudson, ny 12534) where it was diagnosed that the vehicle had severe rust failures. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the approximate failure mileage was 143,766. the vin was unknown.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tundra. the contact stated that the entire frame of the vehicle was completely rusted. the vehicle was diagnosed by two independent mechanics who recommended that it not be driven. the vehicle was taken to brunswick toyota (3041 center rd, brunswick, oh 44212, (888) 890-1882) in 2015 to be repaired per an unknown recall to prevent the corrosion. the manufacturer was contacted and provided a case number, but stated that the vehicle did not qualify for the lemon law and they could not assist. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 161,000.
The entirety of the vehicle frame is rusted. cross-members supporting the bumper and spare tire are rotted and/or falling away from the main frame. i purchased the vehicle used with undercoating applied, but the frame rust was already too extensive underneath and caused significant corrosion.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tundra. the contact stated that the frame was severely rusted. the vehicle was taken to kenny kent toyota (5600 division st, evansville, in 47715, 812-618-0061), but was not diagnosed or repaired. the dealer and manufacturer were made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall for the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 175,000. *tt
While changing a fuel tank strap that broke due to rust, i noticed the cross member at the front of the fuel tank is rotted right through where it meets the main frame. truck has been undercoated. i talked to toyota and they told me they are not fixing it at this time as there is no recall. how ever the 2005 and 2006 sequoia are part of this recall as well as the 2007 to 2009 tundra.
The frame on this 2006 toyota tundra has rusted to the point of making this vehicle unsafe to drive. this degradation has happened far sooner than the expected retirement age for this vehicle. toyota has not included this frame as part of it's frame rot recall which applies to many other frames from similar years.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tundra. while the vehicle went through an emissions inspection, the inspector failed the vehicle due to a corroded frame. also, the check engine indicator illuminated. the contact called girard toyota at (860) 447-3141 (located at 543 colman st, new london, ct 06320) where it was confirmed that no recall was associated with the vin and there would be a fee for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified and confirmed that the recall had expired. no further assistance was offered. the approximate failure mileage was 113,000. the vin was unavailable.
Frame rust on front of vehicle in the "crumple" zone. i was told by toyota that it was part of limited service campaign d0d for 2004-2006 tundras and that a sealant was applied in june 2014 and no other action will be taken. these vehicles clearly have structural integrity issues due to known frame rusting resulting from a manufacturing deficiency that are beyond the scope of the limited service campaign for the 2004-2006 model years just like the 2000-2003 tundra vehicles that were subject to full recall. the nhtsa should take action with the 2004-2006 toyota tundra vehicles to ensure toyota addresses the safety related structural integrity concerns with the frames of these vehicles as they have for the 2000-2003 and 2007-2008 model years.
Rusting of frame impacts structural integrity of vehicle. 2004-2006 model years were subject to a voluntary limited service campaign on the heels of a recall to the 2000-2003 model years. the limited service campaign is ineffective at mitigating the safety concern over the structural integrity of the vehicle. 2007-2008 are subject to recall as well. nhtsa should address this matter to ensure toyota resolves the serious safety issues associated with a rusting frame.
Frame is rotting out
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota tundra. the contact stated that the vehicle was serviced for brake work when it was observed that there was corrosion on the frame. the vehicle was taken to koch 33 toyota (3816 hecktown rd, easton, pa, 18045) where it was diagnosed that there was frame corrosion. the vehicle was taken to the dealer back in 2013 due to sb-10058681-4896 for the frame. at the time, the vehicle was sprayed with an undercoating. the dealer informed the contact that due to the limited service campaign expiring in 2015, nothing could be done. the manufacturer confirmed that the limited serviced campaignd expired, but no additional assistance was offered except referring the contact to nhtsa. the failure mileage was 75,079. the consumer requested to be advised of any information resulting from this complaint. *js

Frame has holes in frame alot of rust entire frame would not pass inspection 62,ooo miles on truck
State inspection revealed rust perforation of frame, near front suspension components
Frame rust - i am experiencing major frame rust on my vehicle. it effects 90% of the frame, the brake lines, control arms and even the alignment components. most recently my alignment components seized up with rust and now the vehicle can not be properly aligned with out replacement of those components. this has cause abnormal tire wear. toyota has recalled 2000-2003 tundra frames. also toyota has now have been sued for the 2005-2007 sequoia frames & and 2007-2008 tundras. my vehicle needs a recall as well!!! this is a very serious safety issue!!
I received a recall on my trucks airbag control module took my truck to dealer they said they would order the part and call me to make an appointment for installation i went back three times to dealer with no success also the recall they made on my truck last year the frame rusting out did not last every thing they did fell off the frame of my truck is this truck safe to drive
Truck had front gas tank strap rust out. went to dealer for repair. was told repair couldn't be completed because frame had rusted out in that area. 2014 toyota had a rust campaign and dealer applied corrosion rust coating. frame still rusted! was informed by dealer unsafe to drive. recalls on all other years except 2006. truck sits in driveway basically is a pile of scrap. called toyota corporate received case #. case manager told me sorry cannot help the rust coating was a one time fix. so now am stuck with a truck unsafe to drive. !!!!thanks toyota!!!!
Anti corrosion paint was put on the frame a year and half later and my truck will not pass inspection and toyota will do nothing they want me to believe that the frame rusted out in a year and a half and was fine when they put the coating on
