Tl* the contact owns a 2000 toyota tundra. the contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that there was a hole in the frame due to corrosion build up. the vehicle had not been repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 96,800. updated 10/24/14*cn updated 4/16/2015 *js

Front frame is rusted in multiple areas . 3-4 inch holes completely through frame . toyota replaced back gas tank straps , spare tire carrier and sprayed frame from cab back . didn't address the safety issues on front of framebut would not pass vehicle for wv state inspection. stated that vehicle was unsafe ! noted holes in frame but said they weren't replacing frames at this time . my research shows they have replaced many frames and my vehicle certainly is unsafe . all i want is for my sons truck and my son to be safe on the road. .please help. *tr

I have a 2000 toyota tundra with 104,000 miles. it was part of a limited campaign related to frame/related component corrosion. the local dealership applied crc to certain parts of the frame but did an insufficient job and the material is flaking off in large pieces. the safety issue is that one of my fuel tank gas straps rusted off and now the tank is holding on by only 1 strap. i have called toyota corporate and returned to dealer and no one will even consider helping me remedy the gas strap issue because the recall period is closed. the entire bottom of my frame is rusted and several components connected to the frame are compromised. no, there hasn't been an accident but i am stuck with a vehicle this is mechanically sound but isn't safe enough to fill up with gas for fear of a fire. toyota customer service uses very deceptive practices concerning safety. it is sad that large corporations value consumer safety so little. *tr

This vehicle as a lot of frame rust where the frame connects to the leaf springs. i have addressed this with toyota and they do not see it as an issue since it was not in one of the 20 states they considered "salt" states. this has been a known problem with tacomas and tundras within this vintage. if there is not perforation, then they see it as not a problem even though lots of scaling leads to perforations and possible weakness where the suspension connects to the frame. *tr

The bed of my 2000 tundra is rusting out where the cross members are welded to the bed and where the bolts are connected to the frame. toyota replaced the frame in may of 2011. i looked online and there are other tundra owners with the same problems. i took the truck to a local toyota dealership as requested by toyota recall center and the service manager, head mechanic ,and customer service manager all looked at the truck and said it was in bad shape and had to do with inferior metal, poor workmanship,or inferior under coating. lakewood toyota said they couldn't address the problem because there's no recall for the bed. if the bed becomes unattached from the frame then there could be a major accident. i was hoping you could notify toyota of this problem because the company doesn't want to take responsibility for their inferior quality and poor craftsmanship want to put this on record so your dept can address the issue and or point me in the right direction to further pursue this matter. thank you for your time and understanding. updated 08/18/14

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 toyota tundra. the contact stated her husband was driving 40 mph when he lost control of the steering. the contact discovered that the tire was disconnected from the vehicle due to rusting of the frame. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 113,000. the consumer discovered there was a recall on the very issue. toyota stated a recall notice was mailed to the consumer. however, the consumer never received the notice. apparently, it went to a previous address. updated 01/07/15*jb

Frame of vehicle has rust perforation! vehicle has no rust elsewhere, but the frame alone is rotting away in certain places. toyota's recall only cover the spare tire area of the frame, but frame fracture would cause loss of control and lack of occupant protection. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 toyota tundra. the contact was made aware of a manufacturer's recall regarding rust on the frame. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was informed that the repairs would not be made under the recall. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle has not been repaired. the nhtsa recall campaign number could not be located. the approximate failure mileage was 112,000.

I took my truck for a frame recall, inspection today.they tell me the frame fails inspection, and they would go good for frame.then they say i will have to pay for all other cost in order to replace frame(nuts,bolts,brakes,calipers,shocks,rubbers,ect...)he says could go any where from $2000.to $4000.dollars that i would have to pay.why should i have to pay for there mistake?the truck is 14 years old(still runs well.)but why do i want to spend $4000.dollars on an old truck that also has rust on fenders and bumper.i can,t get another inspection sticker in state of maine because of rust issues.i think toyota tells me $4000 dollars to discourage me to do the recall.truck only has 112,000 miles on it why don,t they just offer me some money for the truck, and probably save them money by not having to do the frame+labor..can you help me?[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 toyota tundra. the contact stated that the front passenger's side stabilizer bar and the frame was extremely rusted and resulted in deterioration. the contact had previously received notification of a manufacturer's recall pertaining to the failure however, the contact was advised that the recall had expired. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 55,000.

Truck failed annual inspection due to extreme rust of frame and cross members to the point of frame perforation and imminent failure. frame directly under driver's seat rusted through where it joins the cross member under the transmission. frame in front of passenger rear tire extremely rusted where it joins the cross member. the inspector stated this was a more imminent concern than the rusted through portion under the driver because it had a good chance of breaking with the next pothole. leaf springs for drivers rear tire also extremely rusted. rear differential housing rusted through on the top with oil leaking out. exhaust heat shields and hangers rusted away completely. there was no mention of the rear cross member over the spare tire or the gas tank straps being an issue. they could be but were not the imminent concern at this point. i had just replaced the radiator/transmission cooler due to rusting through and anti-freeze entering the transmission and transmission fluid in the cooling system. there were other issues that are apparently common with the tundra - leaking/cracked manifolds, etc. the truck is at the local dealer pending repair. technician stated it was the worst case of undercarriage rust he had seen. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 toyota tundra. upon inspection, it was discovered that the subframe was severe rusted and corroded. the vehicle was taken to lynch toyota of manchester, ct where it was confirmed that the vehicle was unsafe to drive. no assistance was offered. the contact indicated that the vehicle was examined in 2014 per nhtsa campaign number: 09v444000 (structure), but no service was performed due to insufficient amount of rust at that time. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 173,000. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 toyota tundra. the contact stated that the front end of the frame and the front passenger's side stabilizer were completely rusted. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where both fuel tank straps were replaced due to corrosion. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the defect. the failure mileage was unavailable.

I purchased this vehicle on 10/23/13. i heard about toyota recall on frame. i called a toyota service department and asked if the issue ha been addressed. they say yes it was. the frame recall passed inspection. i then purchased the vehicle based on the pass it received. on 10/24/13 i took the truck to another toyota garage to do an overall inspection of the vehicle so i knew the brakes and other components were in good working condition. the technician called me back and said the frame is rotted! i asked about the recall and he said toyota is not addressing issue any longer. i said it passed the frame inspection. he said they had them spray something over the rust and corrosion, but it didn't fix the issue. he advised me to return the vehicle for a refund. the owner did not know because she was selling for her father that has dementia. help!!!!!! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep liberty. the contact stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number 13v252000 (fuel system, gasoline, structure). the contact did not experience the failure; however she was concerned that she could be crashed into from the rear due to fast moving traffic. the failure and current mileage was 34,000. the vin was not available. *tr

Purchased used 2000 toyota tundra that appeared to be in excellent condition. after driving it for a few days decided to crawl underneath and take a closer look at it. at first glance undercarriage and frame appeared to be in great shape until i noticed undercoating that had large bubbles in it. poked at the bubbles with my finger and large pieces of rust flaked away from the frame and fell to the floor. discovered many of these spots on the frame and rear leaf spring shackles. one area of special concern is rear brake lines are rubbing on the frame where the rust has pushed a leaf spring plate away from the frame and has begun to seperate. did some research and found out how common this is on tundras and tacomas. also found out that toyota has been applying some type of undercoating to these frames so they are aware it is a problem. called toyota and the agreed to inspect it at no charge. of course dealer did not seem to think it was a problem so toyota customer relations was contacted. guess what? they see no problem either! apparaently toyota is spraying this stuff over the rust to buy them some time. now i find out they had been replacing these frames but that expired at the end of 2012? the tacoma has a 15 yr unlimited mileage warrenty on the frame? is it just me or does this seem a little odd? parts of the frame are paper thin and i personally do not feel it is safe to drive. i will be staying in touch with toyota about this and i will not settle for the answer they are giving me. how can they admit they have a problem and then at the end of 2012 just pull the plug and pretend it is not a problem any more? i think it might be time to get together with the thousands of other people that are having the same issue to start a class action lawsuit. *tt

I believed that my vehicle's transmission overheated, so i had it towed to tri-county toyota in limerick pa. they checked it and found nothing wrong with transmission because they refused to test drive it due to rusted off of frame, right rear leaf spring shackle. tri-county told me to take vehicle to sanatoga auto body in sanatoga pa to have them fix it, santatoga told me about recall and that tri-county should have check on that when it was there. tri-county wrote on my paperwork that it was unsafe to drive. i was unaware of the 90m recall. i called corporate headquarters regarding the recall and they stated that my truck was not in the system, so i gave them the vin number. they stated to me that this welded shackle is not apart of the recall. headquarters told me to make another appt. at tri-county toyota to have the recall check done, which is on 7/23/2013. is there anything that can be done? *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 toyota tundra. the contact stated that the frame was completely rusted. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where it was advised to the contact that the frame needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 240,000. *tr

Vehicle was taken to dealership to do safety recall inspection on 21 may 2013. on 22 may 2013 i was notified that the vehicle has a silver dollar hole in the front cross member, and that it would not be fixed as the limited recall notice has expired six months prior. i contacted toyota of usa for more information, they said that the frame replacement would not be done due to the notice expiring. the dealership told me that the vehicle is not safe to operate. i have told toyota that i do not feel safe in the vehicle any more and do not feel comfortable driving the vehicle. they've promptly apologized, without offering a fix to the issue they've identified as a safety concern and a hazard to occupants inside the vehicle. i do not know how they've been allowed to have something as important as this become a time sensitive issue. safety recalls do not expire, but a manufacturer as big as toyota has been deemed as too big to fail. *tr

Toyota states that the following is a safety issue: campaign bxd (safety recall 90m crc application phase 2) 2000 - 2003 my tundra frame corrosion-resistant compound but will not fix the recall due to it being expired not full six months ago. *tr

2000 toyota tundra. consumer writes in regards to vehicle severe corrosion recall notice. *smd ..the consumer stated he called three dealers to have the recall performed. the first dealer stated there were no appointments available for an inspection, the second dealer stated there were no more parts available and they could not order any more. the third dealer stated they could help and the consumer made an appointment. however, a few days later the consumer received a call from the dealer requesting he return the loaner vehicle, or he would be charged. the dealer informed the consumer the truck had not been inspected and no repairs were performed, and they would call him when the recall was revised. on may 9, 2012, the consumer noticed the gas tank was hanging on the ground. the rear support strap had rusted through. while making the repairs, the consumer noticed rust flakes the size of softballs were falling off the frame. ..updated 08/01/13 *bf

My 2000 toyota tundra frame perforated the size of my fist due to rust near the rear shackle mounts on both sides this is the main load support area. i took this to wilson toyota of ames and the technician stated that i would have qualified for the recall but it expired. i had it inspected last summer in 2012 they said it was fine. toyota stated that they only had to do a visual inspection for perforation. now 3 months after the expiration i have a serious safety concern. i spoke with toyota corporate care who denied progression with a claim on a case basis stating the date ended. i stated if i tried to load my truck to the recommended gross towing capacity i would be afraid that i could buckle my frame or compromise the integrity. i believe the quote was "and" or something non concerning. i confronted the statement then he proceeded to state if your vehicle is unsafe to drive you should not drive it. i'm writing this to make aware as there was a lack of accountability in the process and procedure in and when my inspection was conducted. though i may be one i fear this may lead or continue to go on to others as the progression of rust to perforate a frame in less than a years time frame a 3000k miles driven is a concern. i do reside in iowa where we do receive just as much winter weather as il or mn which should have been included in the list as well. thank you *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 toyota tundra. the contact stated that the rear main frame exhibited numerous holes. the vehicle was currently being repaired under the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 09v444000 (structure). the technician informed that the main frame was completely damaged; however, the rear cross member was the only part being replaced as mentioned in the recall. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 81,000.

I recently took this truck in on a trade and knew nothing about toyota's frame rust issues. called toyota customer experience center and explained the rust perforation issue i noticed on this truck. has a marble sized hole by the drivers side spring perch and the frame is thin on both sides in that area. the passenger side behind the wheel has a hole the size of a tennis ball on the side, a hole the size of a golf ball on the bottom(same area), and a hole an inch wide by four inches long on the top of frame(same area). the rest of the frame is heavily rusted and thin. the rust comes off in big flakes. i explained all this to toyota and received a case # and was told some one would contact me. well finally got a call and they said they would do nothing yeah that is right nothing about it since their good will "limited service campaign a0f" had expired. so now that they will do nothing about it i have a truck that is a time bomb waiting to break apart hopefully some one doesn't get killed with this death trap. way to make a happy customer toyota !!!! wonder how many more people will get duped by toyota. *tr

In june 2010 my tundra was repaired after being recalled for a severely rusted frame and spare tire housing. what signaled the problem was when my spare tire dropped from the mount and was dangling above the ground causing me to almost loose control on an off ramp. the first dealer inspected the vehicle and told me "the frame is so rusted i can put a screwdriver thru it". he then allowed me to drive home. on a second opinion, the truck was pulled off the road . when i picked up the truck following the repairs the spare was in truckbed and i had to ask for it to be installed. ( had they even looked at it?) )n 1/25/13 while pumping gas, i look behind the vehicle and see the spare tire on the ground! the plate that holds the tire was worn away. i contacted toyota who told me that these things can happen in colder climates but when pressed she said that i could get it inspected and also have the fuel tank straps inspected as there had be rust issues with these on the 2000 tundra. when i asked if there would be a recall or notification, i was told no. this is appalling. the tire easily could have fallen off while being driven and now a fuel tank holder may be rusted. shouldn't there be a recall? i had talked to a ntsb member but wanted to update since i talked to toyota. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 toyota tundra. the contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under nhtsa campaign id number 09v444000 (structure) a few years ago and while entering a service station at 2 mph, a loud noise was heard. upon inspection, it was found that the spare tire had separated from the vehicle. the vehicle was not taken to a mechanic. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure and current mileages were approximately 157,000.

Toyota issued a recall for the 2000 tundra frame stating the corrosion protection was insufficient for the climate in the northern region causing the mount for the rear tire to fall off.there fix was to undercoat only the back half and not addressing the front part of the frame which is made out of the same metal, the frame is rusting away at both the transmission mounts and behind motor mounts causing the truck to be very unsafe because this was brought to there attention after was they said was there cam pane which ended on12/31/12 they have nothing else to do with anybody body they did this to can be driving something that will fail and somebodys life will be lost. *tr

On 1/1/2013 while at the dealer for an oil change, i was informed that there was a small hole in the frame. i was told that this was not covered by the recent recall because it had expired and not to worry about the hole. the hole is about the size of a half dollar and right above the front wheel. there is also severe rust scaling around the area and several large pieces of frame loose inside the hole. my tundra has always been serviced by this dealer who also performed the recall inspection. when inspected initially there were no issued found. when i brought the vehicle in for the undercoating protection included in the recall the dealer didn't have the material. i filed a complaint with toyota usa. case #1109231360. in 2011. i have not received an update on the complaint. i am the original owner of the vehicle and have had all my service done at this dealer. how did they not notice this hole until after the recall expired? my concern is that the frame is rusting prematurely and the dealer turned a blind eye to it in order to avoid the cost of the repair. than after the recall expired, informed me of the defect. i no longer feel safe driving this vehicle. *tr

I had a recall letter from toyota regarding frame rust. it was to be done at no charge. when the dealer inspected the frame, they said the truck qualified for frame replacement at no charge. when the work was beginning, however, i received a phone call stating numerous parts had to be replaced because they were destroyed during the frame replacement process. i was told it was not negotiable and i would have to pay for them. these included all shocks, tie rods and ends for $350. also, they suggested replacing the steering rack and radiator cap for an additional $650. i have contacted toyota corporation to try to get the real story of what is covered and what may not be covered. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 toyota tundra. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign id number: 09v444000 (structure: frame and members: under body shields). the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who disassembled the entire vehicle and installed a new chassis, per the recall. the contact stated that after the repairs he could no longer tow his trailer. in addition, the evap system and the rack in pinion warning codes were displayed. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer who advised the contact that they did not cause any of the new issues with the codes on the vehicle. the manufacturer was notified who stated that whatever the dealer advised that they would stand by their decision. the vehicle was not repaired a second time. the failure mileage was 98,000. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 toyota tundra. the contact stated that the vehicle was towed to the dealer and the technician stated that the frame was rusted and the vehicle should not be driven. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 90,000. the vin was not available.

In accordance with the frame corrosion recall, i took my tundra in for a second inspection. it was perforated so bad it was deemed unsafe to drive within a year after the first inspection when it passed. after multiple delays and 12 weeks i received my tundra back only to be plagued with multiple repairs since. tacoma owners with the same recall were offered a cash value to purchase a new vehicle but tundra owners were not offered that deal. i wanted to have it inspected by a third party but toyota would not let me drive it. multiple repairs since can be attributed to the frame replacement. toyota took 2 days to rebuild my truck for what was a 2 week job. since then my research has resulted in numerous conflicts with what should have been replaced on my truck with the recall work and what was actually done. it is clear that toyota rushed through my rebuild once the delayed frame arrived to get my truck back to me as quickly as possible which concerns me for the workmanship and quality. i currently have ongoing repair problems that they cannot seem to fix and toyota is unwilling to accept that the frame replacement on a 12 year old vehicle may be the cause. i have/had hard knocking noises in my suspension, steering problems, brake issues, axle seal problems, parking brake issues, damaged radiator etc. that i have paid for an continue to fail. i have asked for a complete parts list from the rebuild which i have never received. my inquiries have gotten me nowhere and toyota corporate discounted my issue and sent me back the dealer/ service center. i also own a rav 4 which had the gas pedal recall which i had to take in twice because the first time i was informed that my vehicle was not part of the recall, but it was. then i got another letter, called and was informed that is was and then took it in for repair. safety does not seem to be the priority of toyota. *tr

Received a recall notice from toyota 9sm and a0f and took the truck to conklin cars salina, local toyota dealership for the inspection. according to toyota these recalls involve rust and corrosion of the frame, cross members, and fuel tank straps. conklin cars tech stated no damage, conklin invoice #008916 dated apr 09 2012. jan 2015 i noticed a hole in the lh frame rail and that the rear fuel tank strap had rusted through and broke. i contacted conklin cars and the service manager looked at it again on jan 30th 2015 and said that he had contacted their toyota factory rep. about the issues. the service manager suggested that i should not drive this vehicle. the service manager called me the following week and told me that the factory rep. said that the case was closed and toyota would not do anything about the repair. i was also told that this recall was only for trucks that resided in northern states and this truck was sold in missouri and kansas. looking at the frame it is evident to me that the frame has heavy corrosion, flaking rust and thinning of the frame rails. i have since replaced both fuel tank straps. i contacted toyota customer service "[xxx]" told me that the case number was #1502062938 and that the repair was taken care of on apr 23rd 2012 and was closed. i had explained that allegedly there was no damage according to the dealership in apr 2012 and less than 3 years later the straps had rusted through and there were holes in the frame. at this rate of decay the frame will rust in half in less than 3 more years. e. i contacted toyota and complained on feb 20th 2015 and they opened a new case #[xxx] and she said a case manager would call. [xxx] m., case manager, toyota customer care called feb 26 and told me the vehicle was out of warranty and toyota would not do anything. toyota needs to stand behind these issue because they are ongoing. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

2000 toyota tundra. consumer writes in regards to recall notice concerning severe corrosion of the rear cross member *tgw the consumer complied with the recall notice and took the vehicle to the dealer to be inspected. an inspection revealed, the vehicle was unsafe to drive. the consumer was given a loaner vehicle. however, a day in a half later, the consumer was advised to return the loaner and to pick up his vehicle because toyota would not authorize the repair as the vehicle was a total loss according to a carfax report. toyota advised the consumer once he contacted carfax to have them delete the vehicle as being a total loss, they would repair the vehicle. *jb

The threaded cable which connects the interior door handle to the latch assembly failed, making it impossible to exit the vehicle using the interior handle. a review of online forums for this model year toyota tundra reveals this is a common problem. door handle failure as a result of regular use or trauma resulting from collision could render the vehicle inescapable in the event of an emergency. the cable connecting the interior lock to the latch assembly is solid, unlike the door handle cable which is threaded. i believe the design flaw is uses of threaded cable for the door handle. *kb

Nov 2, 2011 i took my 2000 tundra to larry h miller peoria for a " adf inspection frame tundra" they said the rust has not perforated any metal yet , the inspection paper did not get to toyota headquarters stating the truck has rust but just not enough yet. i called customer service. the lady i spoke to said the recall was good for 15 years from the time of first use.(jan 2001) now they are telling me that my truck is not part of that recall and it ended in april 2012. i was given 2 case numbers from toyota. all the service reps said yes my truck is eligible for the replacement frame. i was given a special case manager..he also assured me my truck is good for replacement.. i received a call today from him with all the information , he told me my truck was part of the buy back program at 1.5% of kelley blue book. i told him i did not want a buyback for my tundra i wanted it repaired. he then said he was sorry he thought my truck was a tacoma not a tundra he put me on hold to talk with his supervisor told me sorry , toyota will not replace the frame but will give me a $ 2500 credit at a franchised toyota dealer for parts or service... my truck is unsafe to drive i have approx 10 marble size holes in the frame. motor and tranny fine only 136000 miles . i paid 12,000.00 cash for my truck i got it with 56,000 miles on it. toyota took responsibility stating yes the frames are bad...and they would fix the problem.. now they are not. *tr

Tl- the contact submitted an email and requested that the official ivoq be written verbatim to the email: i am the owner of a 2000 toyota tundra with severe frame rot. i can not get toyota to replace my frame because the vehicle was a rebuilt vehicle. the only thing they could do was replace the rear cross member. the problem i have with this is that my truck is excellent condition with the exception of the frame. i bought it with 50,000 miles on it and it now has 189,000 miles on it. a local man had his replaced and the truck will pass an inspection. it is frustrating i sent a letter to toyota a year ago and to no response. so i guess my question is are they pulling the wool over my eyes and to doing the replacement or am i just screwed. assignees and notifications* *tr updated 05/02/12 *bf updated 05/04/12

I received a recall for frame rust. upon taking my truck to a dealer i was told there was no perforation and that i would be notified of when a rust inhibitor was available. truck has an extraordinary amount of rust on the frame from being in a northern state for the first seven years on the road. toyota now says they will not apply rust inhibitor because truck is registered in a southern state. all trucks in northern states are being coated regardless of point of origin. where a truck is registered is immaterial if the truck displays extra ordinary amounts of rust. this rust is causing brake and fuel lines to prematurely rust and will surely cause early failure. *tr
