Tl* the contact owns a 2000 toyota tundra. upon taking the vehicle for routine maintenance, the mechanic noticed excessive corrosion and holes in the front and rear frame. the dealer verified the corrosion of the frame and advised the vehicle was unsafe to operate. the manufacturer was contacted and advised purchasing a new vehicle. they did not assist. no repairs were made to the vehicle. the failure mileage was 72,000 and the current was 74,000. updated 05/07/10. *lj updated 05/13/10. *lj pictures received 09/21/10. *jb

2000 toyota tundra failed the routine state inspection. the service writer explained that the truck frame had severe rust/rot perforation damage that resulted in the frame essentially breaking in half. *dt the break in the frame, also broke the rear brake and fuel lines in half. *jb

Late spring or early summer of last year i had been driving my family home from the grandparents. we felt a sound louder and problem worse than a pot hole. it was a normal road paved. it was in webster, ma. the truck seemed to be fine until late june the truck started to leak power steering fluid. took it to the dealer (tri-state toyota scion and dodge). i explained the problem to the customer service lady. she told me about the rust problem they had with both the tacoma's and tundra's and said the would check my truck out for frame corrosion. without showing me they said there was none. then proceeded to tell me the cost to fix this problem and was a ridiculous amount. it then got inspected by an autobody specialist. precision auto repair look at it and said the frame is junk just like the tacoma's. i ask jim audett the owner for a preliminary estimate so i could send to toyota. the power steering rack had broken away from the frame and chunk's of the frame (metal are falling off this truck). the integrity of this vehicle has been compromised by the corrosion and is not a road worthy vehicle. i spent $19,000 for this truck in early january 2007 about 14 moths before toyota did the recall on the tacoma's. i have been given the run around by the dealer and toyota for almost a year. i have subsequently taken and sent to attorney generals of both massachusetts and connecticut to inform them of this potential road hazard to all. it would be greatly appreciated if your agency could look into this because toyota is reluctant to stand behind this poor quality vehicle. they have denied there was any corrosion. the pictures prove beyond a shadow of a doubt this is a manufacturers problem. you can view the pictures at www.tundrasolutions.com and look up user name rustytundra007. if you would like also www.pickuptrucks.com wrote an article on the truck too. this truck was also featured on wcvb tv in boston ma. www.thebostonchannel.com has posted report. *tr

Local mechanic informed me of tremendous amount of rust on frame, which if not fixed would not pass 09 inspeciton. metal shearing off in large sheets. *tr

I own a 2000 toyota tundra and it has excessive rust and corrosion on the frame of vehicle. body of the vehicle has no rust. vehicle has always been maintained, in otherwise great shape. local toyota dealer indicated that nothing could be done and to contact toyota headquarters. contacted toyota about the problem (4/08) and received a response that my corrosion warranty ran out 9/05 and they could not do anything for me. they indicated they logged the incident and that was it. concern is that various important points of frame structure are rusting very bad. i.e. leaf spring supports, body mounts. this is my newest vehicle and by far has the worst rust. after toyota indicated they could not help me i did try to paint and coat the frame for protection. this did not help and the problem persisted at the same rate with little evidence anything has ever been done to stop the issue. *tr updated ivoq 11/03/1

Very concerned about the rust under my 2000 toyota tundra. it was inspected for the initial bed rust in jan 08 by my local dealer after a local reputable body shop agreed with me that things were not right underneath. dealer rep dismissed my concerns and did nothing. now i'm reading about these things falling apart. the below incident date is the date of the inspection. i intend to have another inspection by the dealer i purchased the truck from in the near future. *tr

I took my vehicle in for a safety inspection. the mechanic informed me that i had rust on the frame and that if it got much worse it would not pass inspection. *tr

2000 toyota tundra severe frame corrosion that leaves rust stains on my garage floor. we need to admit that the plating process for these frames was deficient. *tr

I have a 2000 tundra on which the frame is rotting away. can you help by forcing a recall like they did with 95 -01 tacomas. *tr

This vehicle was purchased at greensburg toyota, greensburg, pa. this vehicle has had brake lines replaced, fuel lines replaced, the frame corroded and rusted out, fuel lines rusted out, the tie rods rusted out, the tailgate rusted out, the electrical outlets for the backup and tail lights were shorting out, the entire body on this vehicle is rusting. this vehicle is a complete menace to the toyota company. this vehicle had the front axles rusted out and the wheel fell off while driving it.

The frame of my 2000 toyota tundra has excessive corrosion. the running board (bar) corroded and fell off 2 years ago, and the frame was rusted enough to make replacement unfeasible. the truck has less than 56,000 miles on it. *tr

We have a 2000 toyota tundra ,and the complaint is rust, first my bumpers went .,the rear bumper got so rusted that my daughter sat on the bumper and she fell to the ground., i called toyota ,the said call my local dealer.,i did., my local dealer told me they couldn't do nothing about it ,they said it wasn't there problem . so at this point i never replaced the bumper because toyota wanted 400.00 without putting the bumper on and i can not afford that. anyway who says a new toyota bumper would be no good any ways! second and most important is the frame year after year after year..... i tried to apply an undercoat to the frame and then the next year no matter how much under coating i put on the frame it gets like a 100 times worse i think the rust behind the under coating just breaks apart and just falls off as i drive because the year after the rust is 100 times worse!!!! if you would please ., look into this asap because im really scared to drive this truck, and i don't want to sell it to someone else because i would be afraid for them and feel terrible if something dangerous happened to us or them, please help! thank you *tr

I own a 2000 toyota tundra limited with an unusual amount of frame rail rust especially around the hangars that attach to the axles. i've been told by st cloud mn toyota that there's nothing they can do. *tr

The frame on my 2000 toyota tundra is just as rusty as alot of the tacomas being bought back by toyota. i feel toyota should add the tundras to their inspection list. *tr

I own a 2000 toyota tundra sr5 extended cab. the frame is in terrible condition due to large chunks of rust falling off it and springs are rusting in the same manner which leaves me fearful for myself and any passengers safety. every time i go far an inspection i hold my breath for passing. i noticed the excessive rusting about two years ago. i have roughly 73,000 miles on this truck and it's been garage kept here in hatfield ma since ownership. *tr

Failure of frame in 2000 toyota tundra. first noticed large amounts of metal flaking off in early 2007. notified toyota and they did nothing. spare tire fell off bottom of truck in my driveway. noticed a crack in the frame and took it to be welded, and was told that my spare tire crossmember could come off in its entirety, that two of my cab mounts were no longer intact and that the others were hanging by a thread, and that the frame could not be welded in a way that would be safe for use, as there were portions without enough metal remaining to weld to. notified toyota again (feb 2009) and was told that they had no program in place for the tundra. problems began in 2007. rot ongoing. truck is a total hazard because of the frame, and (uselessly enough) utterly functional in every other way. pictures and the whole story at www.my2000tundra.com - i didn't know what else to do, so i made a website to share the information & pictures. *tr

2000 toyota tundra truck my frame is rusting away, it is rusted at all the mounting points and is flaking away. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 toyota tundra. while the contact was examining his vehicle, he observed rust spots from the middle of the vehicle down through the rear bumper. the vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. prior to the failure, he noticed that layers of the frame were falling off. the current mileage was 49,000 and failure mileage was 36,000.

I own a 2000 toyota tundra and a few years ago it began to shed its paint. it spots up like it is corroded with a chemical then begins to peel off. by this point the whole truck has either peeled off or is spotted. the running boards are also corroded and rusting with holes all over them. i contacted toyota and a rep looked at the truck and preceded to accuse me of exposing my truck to a chemical and saying he had never seen this happen before. they refused to make it right. i know of another lady with the same year truck and color of mine who has experienced the same problem. i did not buy my truck new, but it was only 5 or 6 yrs. old when this problem began to occur. i am thinking that i cannot be the only one out here who is experiencing this. thank you for all the help you can offer. *tr

Significant rust on my 2000 toyota tundra. there is significant rust on the frame to the point that there is a hole in it. the cross member was not affected, but the rest of the frame has been. i have even had to replace the exhaust because it was rusted out and would not pass inspection. i have filed a complaint before on the same vehicle for the same reason. it was filed about 2 years ago, but i do not know the date or the number that i was provided. *tr

My 2000 tundra has excessive rust on the frame and entire undercarriage. the truck is only 8 years old and should not be doing this. the same problem has occurred with tacomas of the same model year. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 toyota tundra. the cross member that held up the spare tire was corroded. as a result the spare tire was not properly secured to the vehicle. he called the dealerships in reference to the failure, but was not advised of a remedy. he had not spoken with the manufacturer to-date. the current mileage was 198,502. the failure mileage was approximately 130,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 toyota tundra limited. during state inspection, he was informed that the rear frame cross member was corroded. the frames had an hole hidden in the spare tire area. the vehicle failed inspection. no repairs were made. the current and failure mileages were 95,000.

Own a 2000 toyota tundra: rusted frame that is barely supporting fuel tank and spare tire; (replaced rack & pinion (steering) due to rust in 2008); rusted rear spring mounts; rust comes off in 1/8 inch chunks; was told not to drive vehicle--it's too dangerous; pictures are with bernardi toyota, framingham, ma; all problems relate to rusted frame. *tr

My 2000 toyota tundra sr5 was purchased in aug 2000. in june 2005, the dealer noticed excessive rust on the frame and other parts of the underbody. my car is only used a few times per month on the weekend and only has 16,000 miles. the brakes needed to be replaced in 2006, the dealer noted excessive rust again on the calipers. *tr the consumer was informed the rust condition was due to improper metal preparation during factory build. updated 11/16/09

I have a 2000 toyota tundra with a rusted frame rail with soon to be a bent frame and undrivable .. 1 owner since 2000 i bought straight from toyota at graponee. i have kept up with maintenance routinely.. *tr

I own a 2000 toyota tundra 4x4 truck. there is a major safety issue with the frame on this vehicle. the frame has rusted to the point of having holes. i am concerned about the safety of driving this vehicle, as frame failure may occur and cause injury or loss of life. i have contacted toyota about this problem and was told there was nothing that would be done about the problem. in recent past, toyota recalled the tacoma for a similar problem. i would like for this problem to be addressed by toyota and corrected in an appropriate manner. *tr

Tl* the contact owns 2000 toyota tundra/sr5. he discovered corrosion on the driver-side rear and passenger wheels. years later the corrosion began falling off of the vehicle onto his drive-way. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the technician stated that the entire frame was corroded. the manufacturer took report number 0910139204. the manufacturer has not confirmed if they will assist with the failure. the failure mileage was 30,000. the current mileage was 40,000.

I was driving 35 mph down a smooth street in austin, tx. in my 2000 tundra pickup truck. the entire right wheel assembly fell off causing $3000 damage to my truck. the day prior, i was driving in the country at 70 mph, within the speed limit. i had 1000 lbs. of grain in my truck. if the wheel had come off that day, i would likely have been seriously injured. i contacted toyota customer service and was told: "you are out of warranty and there is nothing we can do." the truck had 56 000 mi. on it and was truly out of warranty. this event was so significant, i felt that some acknowledgement and remedy should have been offered. if there are other tundras out there, 1999 onward, this represents a very big potential hazard. i got no response from the dealer either. when i suggested to the toyota customer "service" representative that i could have been killed or seriously injured by this, she simply said" "it is out of warranty". i suggested that toyota did not care about their customers and was told "it is out of warranty". i suspect that there are other tundras whose wheels have fallen off. apparently the problem is an "l bracket" that was made of two pieces of steel, instead of produced as one single piece. *tr

While washing the vehicle passenger door mold fell off because the clip holding the mold rusted. consumer was concerned what will happen if this vehicle will be in motion and hit another car while driving. dealer was notified. *ak

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 toyota tundra. in june of 2004, he noticed corrosion bubbling under the paint on the frame; there were quarter inch lumps on the paint. his mechanic speculated that the corrosion was premature for the vehicle's age in 2004. he then recommended that the vehicle be oiled. the vehicle has been oiled since 2005. during the last oiling he was advised that the cross brace that holds the spare tire had corrosion , and the spare tire was missing. the manufacturer nor the dealer was contacted. the current mileage was approximately 154,000. the failure mileage was 50,000. consumer is adding pictures. 10/26/09. *nj updated 10/26/09 *bf the consumer sent in pictures of the frame. updated 10/28/09

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 toyota tundra. the brake lines were repaired at the owners expense about 5 years ago. recently he noticed the brake light warning light illuminated on the instrumental control panel. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the frame along with the brake lines were replaced because of corrosion. the failure mileage was 50000. the current mileage was 74000. updated 11/04/09. *lj the sway bar link was replaced. updated 11/06/09.*jb

Severely rusted frame. toyota & nhtsa knows there is a problem because the frames were not treated correctly in the factories. i have been contacting toyota about this issue for years & have gotten no where. my frame starting rusting & flaking metal around 4-5 years of age. frames should not rust like this. i've tried undercoating the frame to prevent any further rust but nothing helps it just gets worse & worse. my brackets holding the front bumper are so rotted i'm just waiting for the bumper to fall off. something needs to be done for the tundra owners w/ this severe problem. tacoma owners 1995-2000 w/ this same problem were taken care of but nothing has been done for the tundra owners & i don't understand why. please help the tundra owners. *tr

Defect: 2000 toyota tundra rusting frame. vehicle purchased new in 2000 and purchased rust proofing package. frame rust was noticed in 2004 and returned to rust proofing vendor for warranty. was told that it was a problem with the frame and to go back to toyota. toyota at the time was recalling tacoma's for a rusting frame problem. toyota tundra's have not been recalled, but toyota will arrange inspection and will fix with a gel application (when available) if rusting is present. we feel they should handle this problem with a recall and offer the customer the same options as for the tacoma recall: if there is no rust, automatically extend warranty to 15 years, if there is rust, the frames are replaced at no cost to the consumer or toyota would buy back the truck at 150 percent of the high kelly blue book value. my truck has under 80,000 miles on it and i don't feel this problem will go away anytime soon. rust is falling off the truck frame staining the garage floor and no matter how much gel they put on, it will not last. because i was pro-active in scraping off the rust and applying rust resistor myself (because toyota refused to do anything for me in 2004), i have deterred the frame from rusting through at this time. however, from a safety standpoint and due to the fact that toyota had problems with the tacoma, i feel they should be held accountable for the defect in the frame material for the tundra. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 toyota tundra. he stated that the frame underneath the vehicle has been covered with rust for two years. the vehicle will not pass inspection due to the rust. the dealer was notified and stated that they were aware of the problem. the mechanic inspected the vehicle and stated that the shocks could snap and come through the bed of the vehicle. the vehicle has not been repaired. the rust is a common occurrence with toyota tundras. the failure mileage was 20000 the and current mileage was 47000.

The frame on my 2000 tundra is disintegrating. i can break off big hunks of rusted metal and i'm concerned about the structure of the undercarriage. this has been an ongoing occurrence. *tr

I own a 2000 toyota tundra ltd pick-up i bought new . it was recalled 10/2009 for rusting frame work, it is now 2/2010 and toyota hasn't sent any recall notifications to me. my frame is corroded on the hump over the rear tires,to the point of metal flaking off approximately a 1/32 to 1/16 of an inch on both sides of the frame. my question is when is toyota giving the recall notice to us owners? i'm afraid the frame might crack while i driving it !!!!!!!!!!! *tr

2000 tundra - rusting frame. truck was inspected by toyota in nashua, nh - nov 13, 2009. result was a rusted through spare tire brace and rust formation on rear section. since i tow my 27" catamaran, i am concerned about the frame. filed claim to toyota (0911130407) nov 2009. *tr

A television bumped the left rear tire well(in bed of truck), putting a dent in it and causing it to split the area of the truck. the split was about 9 inches long. driver was making a right turn, traveling about 7 mph when the incident happened.

The frame on my 2000 toyota tundra is rusting through and becoming unsafe. toyota indicates there is no repair available and nothing they can do now as there is no "recall" in effect. the truck is 8 years old with 94k and worthless and unsafe. *tr

Frame rust problem. the frame on my toyota tundra has been rusted since the day i bought it new in 2000. it continues to rust and i am afraid one day the entire frame will rust out. *tr

Power door lock fly open at highway speeds, replace twice, but part keeps failing

I have a 2000 toyota tundra that suffers from excessive frame rot primarily in the front portion of the truck. my fear is an immanent and premature failure of newyork state mandated safety inspection, heaven forbid a frontend collision in which my wife who is the primary operator of this vehicle, could be severely injured or killed. i have read and heard of some dealerships replacing whole tundra frames as well as simply buying back the vehicles from the current owners. i visited a nearby toyota dealer who angrily informed me that " no such problem exists" yet when i contact other toyota dealerships, they advise me that they are aware of the issue. i am looking for the truth concerning this matter. it's been a good truck otherwise, but i am not going to potentially jeopardize the lives of my family simply because a manufacture won't take responsibility for their production shortcuts, oversights and mistakes. at this current time in toyota history, it's time to fix the recurring problems and shortfalls they have been trying for years to slide by the consumer before the consumer dictates their fatal demise as a company. *tr

When driving on a bumpy section in interstate 40 (between ft smith and little rock, ar), on two occations, the electric door locks unlocked automatically and each time i would hit a bump, the dome light would flicker as if the doors were ajar. both times, this was corrected (dome light stopped flickering) when i pulled over and reclosed all the doors on the 4 door truck.
