We have classified the 15 complaints from 2005 Toyota Tacoma about STRUCTURE into the following categories.

Frame recall. i took my frame in to be sprayed with rust protection but 4 months later the vehicle failed the state inpection due to holes in the frame. toyota said that since they already put the rust protection on they can not do anything. they did not properly inspect my frame. the rust holes did not appear after 4 months. they should of replaced the bad frame.
Took my tacoma into dealer for noise coming out the back of truck turn out that my truck had 2 active recalls on it one was the frame and the other was rear spring. they told me that the frame had to be replace because there was significant rust and had made a hole on it. my problem is that toyota still has my truck with no ata on repair. they said that i can have my truck back if i sign a waiver if my truck is not safe why would i want to sign a waiver. the did provide a loner car but its only good for 30 day after that i am on my own. as you can see it been 6 week since they took my truck. *tr
2005 toyota tacoma. consumer writes in regards to vehicle frame excessive rusting recall notice issues. *smd the consumer stated toyota determined there was a problem with the steel used on the frames of the toyota tacoma trucks. the consumer stated he was misled about the length of time it would require to complete the recall. the dealer informed the consumer it would be months before the truck would be finished. *jb
The vehicle has significant frame rust. there are several areas on the frame where large sections of metal have delaminated. this presents a structural integrity issue in key supporting areas of the frame assembly for major components to include drive train, braking and suspension. the overall crash worthiness is in question due to the structural integrity issue presented by the frame design, metal composition and premature rusting and metal fatigue. toyota has started a limited service campaign to apply a corrosion resistance protection, but this issue should be a safety recall. based on the magnitude of damage from rusting in my case the only resolution would be a full frame replacement. i have pictures of the frame damage and rust available. i will also be sending toyota a letter requesting an inspection by the regional factor representative prior to any repairs. *tr
I took my tacoma to the local dealership for leaf springs and a check of corrosion of frame on december 7, 2014 and found out i had two holes in the frame. the wouldn't let me take my truck, because of safety issues. the dealer gave me a rental care for now at toyota's expense. they said toyota wants to just replace the frame? then my truck will have a salvadged title in pa. i need to help, i want the same deal other tacoma owners got the last time for the same problem. *tr
Toyota sent me a recall notice (that was not listed on your site) for rust on the frame. i had the dealership inspect it and they said that it is bad and toyota will replace the frame. the dealership is telling me that specific parts (the power steering rack and lines) that are rusty will not be able to be put back when the frame is replaced (and the truck assembled again) but i have to pay the cost. i had those specific parts looked at by my mechanic and although a portion (the lines are bad and i am having replaced) the ps rack is not in bad condition. i contacted toyota to see what they will cover and was told they will not cover parts that are not the frame. my truck is 10 years old. it is in great condition and runs great and i planned to keep it for a long time. my concern is that when you try to disassemble a whole vehicle (which is 10 years old) some of the parts that are in good working condition, once banged around trying to remove them, will break. i am concerned that i have to pay for these parts. if toyota is replacing the frame due to safety issues, isn't it their responsibility to replace other parts that were fine prior to making the recall fix? *tr
I live in ne pennsylvania and was just informed by my mechanic that my truck may not pass another inspection due to frame rust. specifically along side the catalytic converter. my dealer said there is a limited recall in the new england states but not pa. will toyota expand the recall? *tr
Nov 17, 2014, i brought my tacoma in for recall frame inspection. it failed. i was told they would order replacement frame. i was told it would be in mid january '15. i called the dealer today. they said no frame arrived and no eta when it would arrive. they guessed mid march, another two months away, but no assurance it was true. i don't drive my truck due to the weak frame. i still pay insurance on it. why can toyota offer free frame replacement and not deliver a new frame in a timely manner? *tr
Due to a faulty paint or manufacturing process my vehicle is experiencing excessive paint chipping, not caused by external forces. the manufacturer's local dealer as well as local reputable body shops, are aware of the problem. the manufacturer was contacted without resolution. while researching my particular situation, i came across numerous write ups of other consumers experiencing the same issue. *tr
Frame rust recall. *tr
Frame on my tacoma is bad rust hole found left front area. *tr
I own a 2005 toyota tacoma access cab. i got a "limited service campaign notice" that my truck might have abnormal rust on the frame. i put it on a lift and behold there was a huge hole in my frame making it not drivable. apparently toyota is not being up front with its customers and has known about this defect in the 2005-2011 model years. my dealer said a new frame will cost around $14,000 to replace. they said toyota would pay for the frame but will not buy back the truck. i still do not understand how they are willing to spend $14,000 on a frame on a truck that is worth $15,000 i have heard from dealers that the frames are on national back order and are at least 3 months out. please investigate the 2005-2011 tacoma claims. i think a full recall is due. my truck could of killed someone. i am sure there is a lot of ticking time bombs out there. *tr
My truck frame has an inordinate amount of rust and a perforating rust on the drivers side front of the frame approximately 7x6 inches of frame that has just cracked away with rust, i am sure my truck will not pass state inspection this year. under toyota's limited service campaign my truck should qualify for repairs but toyota corporate does not recognize my truck as needing repair based on the vin number. *tr
Tl- the contact owns a 2005 toyota tacoma. the contact stated that the vehicle had developed severe corrosion and a hole near the drivers side tire. the contact who was a certified mechanic stated that the frame needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 194,000. pam
Frame rust/and all connectors with holes, buckling and stalling. *tr
The catalytic converter shield on my 2005 tacoma fell off while driving and almost caused an accident. after picking up the large metal parts and inspecting under the vehicle, i noticed that near to where the catalytic converter sits, that there was extensive corrosion on the truck's frame and even a large hole. i am extremely worried about the safety of the vehicle and am afraid that the frame may crumple while driving causing an accident or death. toyota is aware of the issue. i contacted the corporate offices, but was told that toyota is only replacing the frame on vehicles registered in what they have designated as a "snow state". i purchased my toyota at a dealership in illinois (a "snow state") and have done a lot of traveling within the "snow states", yet because i live 25 miles away on the missouri side, toyota is refusing to cover the repair. the woman from toyota corporate did not seem to care when i told her that i was worried about the safety of the vehicle and that it could result in an accident or death. i offered to email the photos of the frame corrosion, but was rejected. toyota needs to cover this repair on all vehicles with frame corrosion regardless of the state they live in. *tr
Vehicle's frame is rusting and flaking apart. the vehicle was taken to a toyota dealership per their limited service campaign to apply a corrosion-resistant compound. one year later that compound is starting to fall off as the rust beneath it lets loose. since there is physically less frame material than when the truck was built i feel that this vehicle would suffer considerable damage in a collision as the the strength of the frame has been compromised. i am also concerend that the vehicle could loose control if the frame fails at highway speed after encountering a large pothole. you can see how the rust has aggressively attacked the many welds on this frame and weekend the joints. while the manufacturer did make an attempt to coat the frame and hide the rust there are several places on the interior of the frame that recieved no treatment at all. you can still see the metal flaking away in those untreated areas. to have some surface rust on a 10 year old vehicle is normal but this problem is way beyond surface rust. while toyota has agreed to replace frames with considerable size holes i think that frames like mine are being overlooked. rather than have a single point of failure my entire frame is weekend and will continue to weaken as the compound they applied is failing to stop the rusting. while the frame does not currently have a hole it is only a matter of time based on the flaking rust. toyota is not willing to offer any help with future holes because they sprayed the compound on the frame. unfortunately the compound doesn't protect the entire frame and it is prone to peeling off. even if the compound were applied correctly it in no way provides the structural integrity that the frame once had.
In the summer of 2013 my rear tire feel out from beneath my truck while i was driving. the cross bars that held the tire had rusted through. i filed an nhtsa complaint. early this spring i brought my tacoma to my toyota dealer to complain about a larger perforation that appeared in my frame. there dealer photographed it, sent it to toyota, and informed me they would call me if toyota was going to take any action. the service manager told me he was hearing rumors of a frame recall and that i should check in periodically. early in october of this year i read on he internet about the tacoma "leaf spring" recall and brought my truck back to toyota. my truck was again inspected, photographed, and a few days later i was told to bring my truck in. i was told that toyota was mailing out notices to qualified toyota owners and that i should be getting my recall notification letter soon. i have never yet received that letter. however, i brought my truck back to the dealer on october 10 and they promptly impounded it, saying it was unsafe to drive. the service manager told me that although the frame replacement would take just a few days, the frames had not yet arrived and i should expect a two to three month delay. i filed a complaint with toyota and a few days later the customer service representative who called me offered no further solution (i suggested that toyota buy back my truck and offered me a credit towards the purchase of a new toyota), but did add that she thought the frames would take longer still to come in and that i should expect to be without my truck for four months. i am currently driving a loaner paid for by toyota, but one that does not well meet then needs met by my personal truck. *tr
I took my vehicle for maintenance and was told that the frame on my 2005 tacoma x-runner is rusted and showing signs of cracking. i called toyota corporate to complain about the issue and was told there was nothing they can do about it since there is no recall or tsb. the rust is so bad that i can no longer drive my vehicle. there was a recall notice for the cold weather states to recoat or replace rusted frames so toyota knows of the problem especially since they had the same issue with 95-04 tacomas. *tr
On my old 1998 toyota tacoma i got the deal on buyback when the frame rusted out so bad with holes in it.then i went out and bought a 2005 toyota tacoma and this truck has rust from end to end on the frame again. when i bought it in 2006 toyota said they had that fixed but this 2005 is alot worse with alot more rust then the 1998.i also took it to the garage to have the power steering pump and alternator and ac pump replaced because everything was rusted up on the alternator and ac pump and power steering so bad the mechanic told me to keep the parts and show the toyota dealership and nhtsa.i was lucky that everything shut down on the truck when i got it to the bottom of my driveway and then got it towed to the mechanic and 1790.00 dollars later with labor and parts let me tell you not happy with toyota.please nhtsa look at this problem and if you need a truck to take pics of mine is the one i used to work at a body shop so i know this truck would do the job for nhtsa my truck has 78000 miles on it i will take pics of it for you if you wish. *tr
On the inside of the left frame rail, inside of where the forward cab mount is located, the frame has completely rusted through. unusual because the rest of the frame from front to back is clean. *tr
I received the recall from toyota regarding the re-coating for toyota tacoma frames due to corrosion from high salt use areas. i received a call today from my toyota dealer that there was a hole rusted through my frame but toyota would replace the frame and it is still safe to drive. i would, however, be financially responsible for anything that toyota feels they don't want to pay for during the "re-framing". i'm concerned about the hole in my frame and it's structural integrity in case of an accident, second... why should have i have to pay for a mistake that toyota made, everything should be covered. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 toyota tacoma. the contact stated while receiving a state inspection, the mechanic noticed that there was corrosion on the frame. prior to the inspection the dealer had also replaced the emergency brake line because corrosion was present as well the manufacturer was notified of the failure and the approximate failure mileage was 125,000.
During pa state inspection frame is totally rusted and failed. holes in frame by engine but entire frame is rusted. thought it was just surface rust but not that lucky. only 47775 miles. *tr
I took the vehicle to koons toyota on saturday, aug 2nd for an oil change. the dealer contacted me and advised the vehicle had a frame condition that made it too dangerous to drive the vehicle. when i got there the vehicle was on the lift and the frame had extreme rust and a large hole in it and the exact same hole was developing on the opposite side. i contacted toyota and filed a complaint and received this response from them: [xxx], we apologize for your concern with the frame on your 2005 tacoma. at this time, your tacoma is not involved in any recalls or warranty enhancements for the frame. until a recall or warranty enhancement is announced for your tacoma, there is nothing that we can do at this time. your email has been documented at our national headquarters under file #1408052561. if we can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact us. sincerely, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
2005 toyota tacoma. consumer stated issues with frame of vehicle and brake lines leaking. the dealer informed the consumer the frame had rusted through and needed to be replaced. he was informed, it would be two months, before the parts were available to fix the frame. the consumer stated the brakes were fine, when arrived at the repair shop. the consumer believed the repair shop damaged the brake lines, when they checking the frame. after two months passed, the consumer called the repair shop and was informed the parts had arrived. however, they did not have the kits. *jb
I took my 2005 toyota tacoma access cab 4x4 in for service when i was told by the that i had two rust holes in my frame near the front suspension on both sides. one is approximately 1 inch round on the passenger side, the other is approx. 4 inches round on the drivers side. i have had the truck maintained by the same dealership since we bought the truck. i have noticed that the last several years none of the work i have had done and that includes asking how the frame is doing as toyota has a history of rust issues with these trucks. i contacted toyota and opened a case with them. they did come out with a limited service campaign (lsc - e0d to address this known rust issue for certain truck in 20 northern states. after following up, i was told yes toyota knows i have the issue but my vin isn't part of the lsc. i was told to contact a dealership and the frame could be fixed as long as i paid for it. i have contacted several local toyota dealerships and they all tell me they don't fix frames with this issue. the truck only has 72k on it and it has never been driven on the beach or taken off road. i use the truck to get to work in snow storms and weekend projects. i always get the truck washed as i know how bad salt can damage a vehicle. i find it amazing that there is a lsc but toyota is unable to tell me how many vehicles are being fixed under it and they are also unwilling to assist in getting the issue fixed or that referring me to local dealerships isn't helping at all since they don't fix this issue.. i also find it suspect that up until a few years ago all of my maintenance work was copied to my toyota account but nothing for the last three years. i have my receipts but again it makes no difference to toyota. if nothing else i am going on record as i have searched several websites dedicated to 2005 - 2008 tacoma trucks and this is a very heavily reported issue. *tr
When my vehicle had 4000 miles on it i got into a car accident that caused damage to the original frame. the frame was replaced by a toyota factory frame purchased by the auto body that was doing the work from a toyota dealer. i noticed recently that there was a excessive amount of corrosion, warping and a crack in the rear section of the frame that is on the vehicle. i started to research the issue online and found a recall for certain 2005 and up tacoma's so i called the toyota america 800 number to see what the process is to get it taken care of i was informed that my vehicle vin was not part of a recall and the only thing i could do is take it to a dealer for inspection, so i did they noted the issue and talked to the local service manager which in turn said the vin is not part of the recall and there is nothing that associates the frame that the vehicle currently has with my vin. they also told me the vehicle was not safe to drive and the only thing they could do for me is take it as a trade in. *tr
The frame of my 2005 tacoma has developed a hole. i have only owned the vehicle since march of 2013, and have complained about it to the dealer since a month after buying it. the metal is flaking off all over the frame and toyota has issued a limited service campaign, but they are claiming they can not do anything until they move the campaign to my area. i do not feel safe driving this vehicle. but i have to, and will not even let my family in it anymore. i have 4 years of payments and a truck that is wasting away. please help push toyota to move this campaign along as fast as possible, or make it a full recall. *tr
2005 tacoma resided in pa from purchase in 2004 until july 2011 & is now exhibiting frame perforation in the area of both exhaust resonators and splitting in the c-channel rails near the rear wheels. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 toyota tacoma. the contact noticed that the subframe was rusted. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 30,000.
I all ready have a complaint in odi- 10915902 i have pictures i would like to send.did my complaint in oct 2016 still waiting for paperwork.i have more pictures not sure how to send them all.
The following is the dealer inspection report for my truck: "found extreme corrosion to frame. tow hook and driver side sway bar mount unable to re-attach due to frame perforation front cross member missing (rusted off) found hole in left side of frame. steering rack mounts extremely perforated, ready to detach. do not recommend driving vehicle due to extreme damage to frame" truck purchased new, single owner, well maintained. ...updated 06/10/14 *bf
Vehicle was in for state inspection and found to have holes rusted in frame which would not pass inspection. contacted toyota customer service was told at the present time there is no recall in my area which is pennsylvania. i was told that the boston area has a recall on 2005 to 2008 for my vehicle. i do not understand why my vehicle would not be covered under that recall i need help.the vehicle is in excellent condition other than the frame. *tr
Toyota has received reports that certain 2005-2008 model year tacoma vehicles operated in specific cold climate areas (cold climate states) with high road salt usage may exhibit more-than-normal corrosion to the vehicle's frame. toyota investigated these reports and determined that the frames in some vehicles may not have corrosion-resistant protection sufficient for use in these areas. this combined with prologed exposure to road salts and other environmental factors, may contribute to the development of more-than-normal rust in the frame of some vehicles. this condition is unrelated to and separate from normal surface rust which is commonly found on metallic surfaces after some years of usage and/or exposure to the environment. toyota has issued a limited service campaign, but only in selected states. my vin# falls within the range on the limited service campaign, but my state is tbd according to toyota. my complaint is that toyota is aware of this safety issue and is refusing to repair my vehicle. my truck will not pass inspection due to this safety issue and is currently sitting unlicensed. *tr
Performing an inspection on the chassis of my 2005 toyota tacoma and discovered rusted holes in the frame (one on each frame rail) just behind the front suspension large enough to put my hand through. toyota has issued a limited service campaign e0d to coat or replaced rotted frames (released 5/4/14) but since i am a resident of the state on maryland and the campaign has not been released in my area yet they will not do anything to resolve my safety issue. my local dealership has been helpful and made temporary repairs to my frame. i have an open case with toyota but they tell me there is nothing they can do until the lsc e0d is released in my area. *tr
On may 27th 2014 i took my truck to be inspected to find out that the frame has a hole created by rust on the on the drivers side of the truck. i contacted toyota to find out there is no recall available and that there has been recalls in the past for older year models of the toyota trucks. i feel when i was talking with toyota they weren't willing to take any part in helping me with my problems and i feel it is a production error. thank you *tr
I recently purchased a 2005 toyota tacoma trd sport double cab and discovered it had severe and dangerous frame rust. it has a hole rusted through the frame in the front and large rust flakes are falling off in other various places. upon doing research, i found out about the massive recalls regarding frame rust on toyota trucks. i spoke with toyota and they said the frame would be replaced if it were currently registered in a cold climate state. i am trying to get them to email me that statement so i can have it for my records. the truck came from a cold climate state. it is currently registered in north carolina. they said they won't help me only because it is in nc, no matter how dangerous the rust. is that legal for them exclude me for that reason? i have pictures to prove that my frame is just as bad as the trucks being repaired. it is definitely a safety concern because it is not a matter of if, but when the frame breaks. thanks for your help. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 toyota tacoma. the contact stated that after refueling, one of the fuel tank straps fractured as a result of corrosion. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the failure and current mileage was 85,000. updated 06/17/14*lj the consumer stated one of the two straps that secured the gas tank failed under the weight of the tank. the tank was tilted as a result. the strap failed as a result of corrosion. updated 06/24/14
I have a 2005 toyota tacoma. this is my second toyota truck and i do really love my truck. my last pickup was a 1999 ext pickup with a lot of rust on it when i qualified for a buyback deal. last week i brought my 2005 into the kenny ross toyota dealer in coraoplis, pa to have them inspect my vehicle. the inspection revealed a large structural hole in the frame of the vehicle. it is on the driver's side where the frame rail curves down. this is one thing that is keeping it from getting a inspection sticker. this is a major safety issue and i would not recommend driving the vehicle in its current condition due to the structure of the frame. this is a serious safety issue. if this section of my frame was to fail, which i believe is completely possible; it will result in a major accident. i would like to believe that i can trust toyota usa to take care of this issue. i am at this point basically left with a beautiful, great running and completely unsafe toyota tacoma. i feel strangled, violated, and taken advantage of. $25,000 plus investment on a truck that is a possible scrap heap at 9 years and 167k miles. i can't sell it and get a fair value knowing the frame is rotten. the dealer won't take it back on a trade in either. i put in a claim that toyota bears no responsibility for the frame since it is out of warranty. all they is offered me $1500 toward a new toyota vehicle which doesn't help my current problem. the dealership seen potential frame issue and didn't even take any photos of it and/or then pass them onto a field rep. as i understand, if the field rep deems the photos of interest, an appointment will be scheduled for when s/he is next at the dealership. the field rep can either then reject or escalate it. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 toyota tacoma. the contact stated that upon inspection, it was found that the frame was perforated due to rust. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure was confirmed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage and current mileage was 189,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 toyota tacoma. the contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer for an unrelated repair. the technician stated that the subframe of the vehicle was corroded and rusted. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 81,000.
Original owner of a 2005 toyota tacoma, bought new in november 2004. 61000 miles. vehicle mostly garaged when not in use. frame and frame sub components are completely covered with rust. several holes in frame, including one in the boxed section the size of a coca cola can. several areas of the frame are delaminating, i.e. the layers of the metal are separating. dealer refused to inspect the frame. have contacted toyota corporate but have not received any resolution. do not feel safe driving the vehicle and basically now have a lawn ornament in the shape of a truck. there was a recall/service campaign/buy back for previous model tacomas due to poor frames. toyota has obviously not corrected the issue and needs to be held accountable. pictures can be provided upon request. *tr
Safety inspection revealed extreame corrosion of the frame and weakening around the motor mount area of the frame, where the mounts are welded to the frame rails. potential for loss of steering control if motor mount collapses through the frame rail and motor rests on steering shaft. i have done research about this problem and have discovered that there was an issue with the frames for model years 2005 and 2006 tacoma's and in 2007 the frame was reinforced where the motor mounts are welded to the frame with extra steel plate on all frames made since 2007. there are after market repair kits that can be purchased for repairing this defect that can be welded around the existing motor mount to repair cracked frames or ones that have already caved in. the after market has seen the need to supply a kit for such a defect and toyota has seen the need to install reinforcements to the frames of all the newer models. how long are they going to wait before they admit there is an issue? i'm sure there are internal memo's on this that they are not sharing with the government. please look into this before some one is injured from this. thank you for you help. *tt
Frame rust noticed while conducting routine maintenance on truck. the whole frame is not rusted but there is a large whole just behind the drivers side tire near the catalytic converter. *tt
Western pennsylvania vehicle, failed inspection due to a hole in the frame. significant amount of rust on the entire frame area. a pinhole was discovered and the vehicle was denied a passing inspection. was suggested that i take it to a frame welding specialist to have it welded. toyota needs to get it together. there are more trucks like this out there, they have already replaced earlier year frames due to the same issues. *js
