On june 17, 2016, i got into my 2004 toyota sienna xle-ims rampvan (joint toyota-ims, floor-lowered wheelchair van conversion with ramp). there was debris on the back seat (what in a non-ims sienna be the third-row seat). i saw tire belts sticking up from the tread of the spare tire. the tire had exploded and deflated, strewing debris from the ruptured tire belts and tread on the back seat. note that in the ims version of the sienna, the spare tire is mounted on a bracket behind the back seat. thankfully, no one had been in the van at time of explosion. the rupture of the tire could have been behind the head or neck of a passenger sitting in the left-rear position. the exploded spare tire is a firestone radial tempa spare, t155/80r17 101m. it is the original spare tire and was inflated to the specified 60 psi. i still have the exploded tire, which i had dismounted and replaced. i also have photos of the ruptured tired while it was still mounted to its bracket behind the back seat.

Campaign 14v273000 (spare tire cable corrosion) was initiated in may 2014. it's now a year later and there is no permanent fix, nor has toyota even provided a date when there will be a permanent fix. the interim fix i have been living with for the past year was to remove the spare tire from under my minivan and put it in the passenger compartment. toyota has gone way too long without providing a fix. but what troubles me today is that when i look up my vin ([xxx]) in toyota's database and in yours (safercar.gov), the response is no open recalls. how can this be? "no open recalls," yet the problem still exists. i wonder if anyone is working on it. btw, i'd be happy to have a new cable same as the original installed, but apparently the dealer isn't allowed to use the same part as original because it could corrode again, which in my opinion is unlikely because at this point in my minivan's life, any cable will outlast the rest of the vehicle. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

The following is an email we sent to toyota. we believe toyota has failed to remedy the defect within a reasonable time. request your help to resolve the issue. thank you, email: "12/12/14 we had the temporary remedy for the 2004 sienna spare tire recall (#e1s) done at your dealership october 2, 2014. we were told that we couldn't leave the dealership with the spare tire in its current location under the car. subsequently, the spare tire cable was cut and the spare tire put in the trunk. we were told this was a temporary remedy and that toyota would have a solution by december 2014. we want to know when the permanent solution will be available. please keep us updated as to the status of this recall so the inconvenience of the spare tire taking up space in the trunk and the inability to stow the back seat can be resolved. we appreciate toyota s concern for safety and that this is being addressed." *tr

While driving my 2004 toyota sienna minivan, the cable which held the spare tire under the car snapped and the spare tire fell off the vehicle. *tr
2004 toyota sienna equipped with tpms does not function. i had a flat tire, but the light didn't go off. cannot rely on this monitoring system.*tr
On november 30, 2009, i got a flat tire, and called aaa to put on the spare. when they arrived and looked under my car, they discovered that i no longer had a spare tire! it had apparently fallen off at some point previously. i think it may have fallen off in late september of 2009, as i did notice something bumping around under the car on a trip on the highway. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 toyota sienna. the tpms does not alert him when the tires have low pressure or if they are about to fail. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. the technician could not duplicate the failure, therefore they could not provide a remedy. the manufacturer was notified, but no assistance was provided. the failure mileage was 60,000. the current mileage was 69,000. updated 10/23/09 *cn the consumer stated the tire pressure warning system did not alert them that there was a tire failure. the tire shredded while driving 65 mph. the second occurrence, the consumer ran over an object in the road, and once again the tire pressure system didn't detect a failure. updated 10/27/09.*jb
Tire pressure monitoring system is not working and toyota has made up various excuses as to why the light does not go off during a flat or "blow out" or that it is working properly. recently i was extremely nervous during driving and found after pulling off and stopping at a honda dealership that i had an undriveable tire. honda was not sure why the light did not go on but said it was unsafe to drive and would not hold air so i could not get to toyota. beside the 9 tires i have replaced the latest tire cost me a rim also. i am assuming that this was due to the flat that i did not know that i had. something needs to be done about the run flats and especially the tire pressure monitoring system before someone is killed or severely injured. please do something about this very serious problem. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 toyota sienna. the contact stated that the spare tire unexpectedly fell off of the vehicle while driving 10 mph. the tire had never been used. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, but they did not explain the reason behind the failure. the failure mileage was 94,000.
2 flat tires within a year on a 2004 toyota sienna (tires replaced 2007). both occasions had a bad valve stem. both occasions the flat tire warning light came on indicating a flat, replaced valve stems on both occasions. have since replaced tires due to concern of faulty valve stems. *tr
Tpms on 2004-2006 toyota sienna awd models does not monitor low tire pressure properly. it only works when the tire goes to zero psi. *tr
My wife has brand new firestone firehawk st tires put on her toyota sienna van on april 15 2008 and on may 2, 2008 while driving down the interstate her tire came apart. the tread separated from the sidewalls (which were still on the rim) and went flying off still completely round . luckily it was a rear tire and she was able to control her vehicle and bring it to a safe stop. the tires were installed at the toyota dealership and they replaced all four tires because we didn't feel safe with this brand. we did have to replace the rim on the blown tire as it became bent sometime during the ordeal. *tr
Dunlop run flat tires wear, repairs and replacement. *tr
From the time we purchased the car we have had many problems with our bridgestone run flat tires. the sensor on the dashboard was constantly on, so we had to check the tire pressure every week- what a pain! the dealer was no help, they agreed that they have had many problems with the tires. we finally decided to replace them with standard tires and i drive without a spare. i figure i'll call aaa if i have a problem. *tr
Had to replace complete set twice of run flat tires on vehicle within three years of new purchase although have under 30,000. *tr
Toyota pre-2007 tpms (tire pressure monitoring system) design flaw. it only works when you "suddenly lose pressure" while vehicle is moving above 20 mph. it does not detect tire pressure loss any other time, even if one tire is at zero psi and you start driving, or if you hit a nail at a red light and tire pressure went to zero before the light turned green when you start moving again. compounded with run-flat tires, the driver may never know they have a flat until the tire explodes. *tr
Tire pressure monitoring system does not work. three times in the last 2 years i found zero tire pressure in one of the tires on our 2004 toyota sienna xle awd and the tire pressure monitoring system gave absolutely no warning. reporting it to 2 different toyota dealers, they said nothing is wrong.
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 toyota sienna. while driving 70 mph, the passenger side rear tire blew out. the following day, the front driver side tire cracked. the road conditions were dry. there was no crash or property damage. the tires were dunlop, size p215/65r16. the current and failure mileages were 35,000.
Toyota sienna (2004) run flat tires. replaced in april 2006 under the class action law suit. worn again prematurely. last tire rotation the front tires were worn bad, the back ones were fine. now, one month later, the front tires (which used to be on the back last month) are now worn. when the tires were replaced, i was told that they were re-engineered and there is to be no worry. i have checked the air pressure more than the recommended amount of every other gas fill up and they have held the air. is it the tires or the car? toyota says they will not replace again. it was only 15,500 miles now all 4 will need to be replaced. i don't understand the problem if they are holding the pressure and that is what the dealer and toyota tell me is that i must keep the pressure at 35, it is! *tr
2004 sienna, had to replace brake pads twice. brought vehicle in for 30,000 mile check, and was told that they were again 75% worn out and need to be replaced for the third time. also, had to replace all four tires at 18,000 miles. *ak
Sienna 2004 awd, pulling to the right, unreliable run-flat tires- needs replacement almost every 12,000 miles. i just had it replace last year 2006 as sponsored by toyota because they said original tires were defective. now i am having problems, grinding noise while turning right, and was informed that all the tires need to be replaced after at approximately 12,000 miles , odometer showed approx 25,000 miles, because of uneven wear mostly left front outside part of the tire. dealer said because i have been running on low pressure and was probably making a lot of right turns. if i make a right turn i would make an equal amount of left turns. the van was equipped with low presure monitoring sensor, one of the reasons i purchased it which did not go off. *ak toyota refuses to help with all the tire problem and dealer is playing dumb to the issue.
5 days after paying harr toyota of worcester 2000.00 for a 60,000 mile check up, brakes and my third set of run flat tires. i experienced a blow out on the highway which was caused by improper installation of the tire. this was noted by toyota of nashua who then replaced the tire which again blew out 60 miles down the highway. this is the third set of tires i have had with 56,000 miles on the car. not including the two i had to replace due to inferior work. this is insane and very dangerous. my family's lives were endangered twice in one day! every toyota mechanic i spoke to complained about the tires. after getting no satisfaction from either dealership i wrote a lettter to yuki funo the ceo of toyota who kindly sent the letter back to harr who has still done nothing! unbelievable that they are allowed to sell such an inferior product at such a high price that is not only expensive but dangerous!!! also unbelievable that a ceo of a company is aware he is endagering people's lives and does nothing about it.
My 2004 toyota sienna run flat tires, made by dunlop have worn out at 24,000 miles. *jb
I have concern with tires and low pressure light illumination . i had 15k service at dealer on july 22, 2006 with 15,423 mileage and they said the tire wear pattern for four tires is ok. also dealer adjusted, inspected and rotated the tires at that time. but during 2,000 miles drives after service, the low pressure light was keep coming on even though i kept the proper pressure in them. so i went to firestone for check up and they informed me that i need new rear tires. i went to costco for 2nd opinion on november 22, 2006 with 17,647 mileages and they informed me that i need two new rear tires due to worn out. i was pretty upset at unusual rapid worn out right after manufacturers recommended 15k service. i send the letters to toyota but they don't even send a reply letter. *jb
3 sets of run flat tires replaced on 2004 toyota sienna in less than 36,000 miles due to out-of-round condition. *ak
Run flat tires on my 2004 sienna awd show excessive, uneven wear on outer treads as compared to inner treads on front tires. toyota has a customer service program to replace run flat tires with uneven wear on awd models but the program is too restrictive. my vehicle showed this wear after 20000 miles but toyota says i have not maintained the tires properly. i have never had this problem with so few miles on a vehicle's tires before and i have owned a lot of new cars. *nm
Three tire failures due to sidewall blowouts. three out of four tires failed dunlop tires original equipment toyota response: too bad, not our problem. local dealer documented issue with tire rep. *nm
Consistently poor tread life on run-flat tires for toyota sienna. *nm
I have 2004 toyota sienna with dunlop runflat tires. after 20,000 miles i was told that i need to replace the tires. at first i was told i did not rotate them properly but after investigating this there are pages of information online documenting that other people are having problems with the tires wearing out to quickly. when contacting the dealer they agree that there is a problem and dunlop agrees they know about the issue but neither want to take 100 percent of the responsibility for these inferior tires. the tires can only be replaced with dunlop or bridgstone runflats. since there isn't room in the car to store a spare we don't even have an option of replacing the tire with a different brand that is not a run flat. i was told that this is not a safety issue but according to the information online there have been accidents because of excessive wear to early and i have noticed a couple of law suits already placed. these tires cost 250.00 per tire with the additional cost of mounting, balancing and alignment for a grand total of $1200.00.. dunlop agreed to pay %50 of the fee which still will cost me $611.00 or toyota will pay %500.00 as a good faith credit which still leaves me with a bill of $700.00. this is still a lot of money especially since they have done nothing to correct the problem with these tires and the new ones will probably have to be replaced in 20,000 miles. *jb
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 toyota sienna. while driving at speeds of 20 mph over a speed bump, the spare tire fell off from the bottom of the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where unknown repairs were made to the vehicle. the failure did not recur. the failure mileage was 41,000 and the current mileage was 97,000.
Major tire wear like the numerous other complaints. replaced without warranty at 23k miles. is there a minimum number of complaints necessary for investigation? these tires or the toyota sienna have a major problem! investigate it please before people are injured like the firestone issue. *jb
Regarding nhtsa action no. pe06010, i have a 2004 toyota sienna xle limited with awd with the tire pressure warning system (tpws) for my dunlop run flat tires (sp 4000). i have experienced punctures in two of my tires on separate occasions. both times the tpws only activated when the psi was about 5- to 15. the dealer indicated to me that the magnetic system will only activate once a tire's height becomes lower due to air loss, and the magnetic field is "tripped". the problem is that the run flat tires do not lose their height due to air loss until the tire is nearly depleted. so, the tpws essentially cannot properly function as intended, at least when run flat tires are installed. as to the dunlop run flats, they had to be replaced after only 19,700 miles. i know numerous other consumers have had similar experiences. toyota acknowledged the problem and relpaced my tires with a new set of 4 run flats at no charge (other than installation). typical price is $250 per tire. credit to toyata, but not sure what will happen when the new set fails. *nm
I own a 2004 toyota sienna le awd. i was always under the assumption that i was driving a "safe car". however, i found out that the tires they use on this model are far from being safe. i have 37000 miles on my vehicle, have done services as well as oil changes and not once has anyone ever said anything about the tires needing to be changed. i even asked toyota and they told me that i was good to go and they would last a long time. it makes me angry that i have been driving a vehicle with tires that have so many problems. bridgestone b380. run flat tires. but not only was i never told about this problem, they have told me that they can not put regular tires on the car without changing rims. i think toyota is covering up and it is upsetting to me to read so many accounts of problems with this particular tire. luckily for me, i was alerted and i checked my tires which has led me to put new tires on the van. they are still the same tires as came with the van because of what i was told. it is only a matter of time before someone gets hurt because of this. *nm
Dt*: the contact stated the run flat tires on the vehicle wore out at 20,000 miles. tires were ordered through a tire center however when the tires arrived the mechanic did not have the special equipment needed to change the tires. the tires were replaced at the local dealership with four regular same size tires. the vehicle is an all wheel drive. the run flat tires are currently at the dealership therefore the tire information is not available. the tires are dunlop. the tire size is p2560r17. *ak updated 05/02/06. *jb
My 2004 sienna le awd has premature tire failure. we have owned the vehicle for 2 years and less than 35000 miles however we are getting ready to buy 4 new tires for the vehicle after replacing 2 tires at approximately 17k. when we bought the vehicle we were told how safe the run flat tires were, especially in rural new hampshire so my wife and 2 kids did not worry about being stranded. unfortunately most repair stations can change or service run flat tires so in addition to unexpected high costs of replacing tires every 15k miles i have to travel to a dealer for service and pay $280 per tire. i believe the combination of tires and vehicle are unacceptable and was not marketed or sold with full disclosure of the issues associated with these tires. i am now looking to convert to conventional tires but there is no place for a spare tire on the vehicle. *jb
My 2004 toyota sienna minivan with all wheel drive (awd) has tires that have worn out very quickly (less than 20,000 miles) leaving my minivan with very dangerous (bald) tires. all tires must be replaced and it will cost over $1,300. it is difficult to get replacement tires and a dealer with equipment to change the tires, forcing owners to drive on bald tires. they are too expensive, too difficult to replace, and i was not told of this when i bought the car. *jb
We own a 2004 toyota sienna le awd with run flat tires. after only 23,000 miles we were told that the tires were dangerously worn and all 4 needed to be replaced. this is absolutely unacceptable. replacement cost was approx. $300 per tire. *nm
