Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2008 Toyota RAV4

Excessive oil consumption ( 1 qt/400 miles), car is now at 108k miles. oil consumption test done at 83k (used only 1/4 qt so passed) at roswell, atlanta. and i was asked to top up oil during oil changes. no notice received from toyota for oil consumption issues. how come the car consuming just 1/4 qt/1000 miles consuming 1 full qt/400 miles now? (assuming test is done correctly) i dont know. but found on internet that this is an issue with this engine. i woke up late. car is out of warranty since 05/18 for any fix. toyota acted so cheap by not recalling the cars here despite knowing the issue very well. i always thought toyota is known for reliability but not anymore.

Having to put oil in it weekly

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 toyota rav4. the contact stated that the oil level was low right after an oil change was performed. the vehicle was taken to c.f. schwartz toyota (1536 n dupont hwy, dover, de 19901, (302) 734-5748) and the oil was changed. the dealer informed the contact to watch and check the oil level after fuel was added to the vehicle. one month later, the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer and the contact was informed of a warranty enhancement program that required an engine replacement at the cost of $4,000. the warranty had special qualifications, but the expiration date had passed; therefore, the dealer would not cover the repairs. the manufacturer stated that they could not honor the warranty and referred the contact to nhtsa. the failure mileage was 114,000.

An excessive oil consumption, 1 quart every 1500 miles. no oil leaks identified. it's a known issue related to 2az-fe engines due to design issues related to pistons and rings. it's a safety issue which can cause a stall of engine due to low amount of oil. toyota dealer refused to repair the engine due to just expired warranty (10 years/150k miles).

Vehicle spontaneously dumped all of oil in driveway due to defective ad recalled valve oil hose. i immediately drove vehicle to nearby mechanic. i had vehicle towed to kings toyota, cincinnati ohio. however, recalled oil hose damaged the intake cam gears. kings toyota stated they will cover the recalled part but refuse to cover the damaged engine repair. cost of repair is $3340.78 + tax. kings toyota also refuses to reimburse for towing fee and rental car. i should not have to pay for damage to the engine due to a defective, recalled part. the recall is called the extension of lsk 090k campaign to december 31, 2021.

2008 toyota rav4 - excessive oil consumption on 2az-fe engine lsc ze7 my daughters toyota rav4 was consuming an unusual amount of oil. we originally thought the car was burning oil. after doing more research, we discovered it was a known issue. toyota has an extended warranty for 10 years and/or 150,000 miles for an oil consumption issue (ze7). the car was purchased august 2008. we purchased the car in 2017 from a family member. the previous owner had no idea that this was a known issue. they thought that the car just burned a lot of oil. we took the car into the toyota dealership september 2018, one month before the warranty expired. toyota agreed to start the oil consumption test which required them to ceil the engine and oil stick. we were told to drive the car for 1100 to 1300 miles. the car had the be towed back to toyota at 1600 miles due to the oil light flashing on and off. they acknowledge the car most likely has the oil consumption issue, but since the car was driven approximately 318 miles over the limit, toyota claims that they must restart the test and refuse to honor the warranty. a tune up was done by toyota a few months prior. when we discovered that the oil leak was potentially related to a known oil consumption issue, we took the car in to start the phase 1 test. the service department marked the oil as severely low. under no circumstances should the car run low on oil, when the oil was filled by toyota and was driven only 1600 miles. sincerely, [xxx] more complaints: https://www.toyoheadquarters.com/threads/excessive-oil-consumption-on-2az-fe-engine-lsc-ze7.362/page-2 information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Car consumption more oil it have only 70000 mileage and seat belt getting stuck should be engine and seat belt safety issue

I noticed that i was losing oil between oil changes. the dealer that has always changed my oil found no leaks. they told me that my engine had a recall covering loss of oil but that the warranty had expired six weeks prior. i was never notified about this warranty. if toyota manufactured a defective engine, why is the recall time sensitive? the dealer never notified me that my year model vehicle had this issue. *js

Have excessive oil consumption. engine light kept going on. took it to the toyota dealer that i bought the car and serviced at. they recommended an oil consumption test. performed the test and it failed. dealer and toyota corporate said there is nothing they would do. claimed they sent a recall letter that i never received. i don't believe there was a recall just a major defect in their powertrain. the vehicle is now in my daughters procession and have grave concerns the engine could seaze or catch fire leading to a crash. in researching i found that this is a common defect amongst various toyota modals and modal years. if there was a recall them i believe the toyota dealer servicing the vehicle was negligent to for prescribing an oil consumption test and not telling me of all recalls for my vehicle. if there was no recall then toyota is negligent for knowingly avoiding a defect and not standing by their product. i would like them to replace the defective engine or repair it so the excessive oil consumption is eliminate. any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated

Started to use a quart of oil every few hundred miles. took it to my local toyota dealer and they confirmed that it needs the new pistons and rings. unfortunately, they will not do it under warranty because my vehicle is 4 months past the warranty extension toyota issued. that policy was for 10yrs or 150,000 miles, my vehicle only has 123,000 miles on it but as mentioned before it is 10 years and 4 months old.

My rav4 is now burning oil. i am putting oil into it before i get to the date of my next service. i've heard about an enhanced warranty that went out to dealers that told about this being a problem with pistons and rings but the dealers chose not to tell customers about it. how do we fix the problem now?

Engine is using excessive oil at the rate of .9 quarts per 1200 miles. dealer said this is normal and toyota will not cover any work under warranty.

I have a toyota rav4 2008 with a 4 cylinder engine. toyota has acknowledged that this engine has an oil consumption problem and had a warranty recall. i never received any notice. i always have the oil changed from the dealer where i bought the car. they never mentioned this recall until it had expired by six weeks. i noticed that it was losing oil so i took it to the dealer and told them about it. they inspected the car and told me their was no visible signs of oil leaking out and then told me about about the recall. they said i could spend 2500.00 dollars to get it repaired. my question is if toyota manufactured a defective engine that loses oil (most likely burning it) then why is this a timed event? if i have this vehicle with this engine then they should correct the recalled issue at no charge to me like everyone else that had this safety issue. the dealer knew i owned this car that was having this issue and never mentioned it. who is going to repair this recalled problem? thanks.

It was recommended by my technician that i have an oil consumption test because i go through a lot of oil. i took it to nalley toyota of roswell ga on 11/7/17 and my car "passed" the test, however my car still consumes oil at rates not healthy for the car. i went to another dealer; marietta toyota in georgia on 6/21/18. they tested the car, added 2 quarts of oil and said that i have an issue, however 10 years has passed since 6/6/06, the first use of the car. i do not believe the oil consumption issue manifested itself in that amount of time between dealer visits. i believe that i was improperly diagnosed by the first dealer because they did not want to have to rectify the problem.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 toyota rav4. while driving 45 mph, the engine stalled without warning. the contact could not pull the vehicle over to the side of the road. the contact turned off and restarted the vehicle, and it returned to normal. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the alternator, battery, and ignition switch needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the contact also stated that the failure recurred several other times after the repair. the vehicle was not taken to an independent mechanic or to the dealer. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was contacted at 800-331-4331 and asked the contact to take the vehicle to the dealer. a case number was not provided. the approximate failure mileage was 213,000. the vin was not available.

2008 toyota rav4 excessive oil consumption. after reaching 100,000 mile on my vehicle, it began to use 1 quart of oil every 1,200-1,500 miles. toyota knew of this problem (tsb to dealers) but refuse to offer any restitution to customers if the vehicle has passed the 60,000 mile power train warranty. this is a manufacture problem and toyota should have to make these repairs free of any charge to the customer.

I have a toyota rav 4 (2008), which i love. it has been a wonderful car. no real problems to speak of. but at around 146,000 miles i was surprised to see my oil light come on 1/4 of the way through my regular maintenance schedule. i added oil and made a mental note to bring it up to my mechanic. another 1/4 of the way the oil light comes back on. i had to add more oil. my car has 149,000 miles on it now. i have had my car in for maintenance every 5,000 miles since i bought it new. it is now burning about 1 quart every 1200 miles. this just happens to be the amount that toyota calls a problem and excessive, but my car is out of warranty. i was hoping to keep my car for several more years. this is very disappointing, especially since people have always said 'get a toyota, they last forever'.

1. excessive oil consumption up to 1qt every 1200 miles, under normal driving conditions noticed december of 2013. 2. ecm fails to hold reverse gear. gear frequently slips in reverse when gas pedal is pressed, won't back up hills. noticed december of 2013, no power when first starting up for first 10 to 15 minutes of drive. october of 2013 immediately after purchasing 3. head gasket fail between number 2 and 3 cylinders due to faulty head gasket. replaced head gasket june 2016 4. very low fuel economy december 2013. 5. no oil pressure very ruff idle oil pressure light on, with oil level reading full. september 2017

I have changed my oil 3 times and each time it consumes oil more quickly this last time i changed the oil right before a1000 mile trip..when i got back home (2000 miles later) i had less than a quart in there. no leaks..no black clouds of smoke. this was in less than 7 days. very concerned! i have owned this car about 6 months now.

Excessive oil consumption. engine down 2 quarts of oil after 2000 miles of driving after oil change.

Excessive oil consumption

My 2008 toyota rav4 goes through excessive amounts of oil. i have to add upwards of a quart a week, after 300-600 miles in that period. it's been an ongoing problem, but i started noticing something was off in the last six months, and tracking it religiously in the last two months or so.

Engine is burning oil rapidly. have to keep adding oil on a regular basis when red icon button to add oil comes on!!

Toyota warranty enhancement program (ze7) phase 2: 2006 - 2008 my rav4 warranty policy bulletin pol 14-12 12/16/14 due to excessive oil consumption. toyota failed to notify me of this issue despite my taking my vehicle in for numerous recall issues, and my ordering seals for my oil system due to oil loss.

Toyota rav4 2008. excessive oil use. engine is using excessive oil, about a quart every 1,200 miles and use may be increasing in use. thus vehicle can use up oil without warning causing an engine failure while traveling the highway/interstate. while vehicle may be well maintained this can happen without warning and strand passengers and be a safety concern should the engine blow while traveling at interstate speeds. toyota issued a warranty extension to 150,000 miles or 10 years which this falls under but dealer examination indicated it was not using enough oil according to them but in my test i showed using 1 quart in 1,200 miles. even a little under this amount of oil use is excessive as it indicates this engine has a problem as toyota has identified. so far they have not been willing to repair. this should be covered under toyota t-sb-0158-14. dealer would not tell me how much oil was used in their test. again anything in the range of 1 quart of oil in about 1,200 miles is a indicator that the engine is experiencing toyota's identified defect and they should repair it.

Engine light comes on every approx. 750 miles indicating oil level low. started doing this 9/5/15 at 90,095 miles. oil level approx. 1 to 1-1/2 quarts low. today my husband added more oil. this is still happening and per websites, toyota recognizes piston design defect, but refuses to repair vehicles out of warranty such as mine.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 toyota rav4. while driving approximately 25 mph, the vehicle stalled three or four times. the oil and maintenance warning indicators illuminated. once home, the contact checked the oil stick and noticed that the reservoir was empty. the dealer diagnosed that the failure was due to lack of maintenance. the vehicle was scheduled for an oil consumption test. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 87,000.

It has excessive oil consumption and has for at least a year that i have been aware of. i have to add at least a quart of oil every 1000 miles or less. i feel i have to carry oil everywhere and that i need to check the dip stick frequently. the dealer has charged a fair amount of money for things that have not fixed it yet and now is quoting me $3800.00 for engine diagnostic/repair. they never once mentioned to me that there is a known consumption problem with this engine type on any of my other expensive visits to them back when my mileage was uner 150,000 miles. it's know over 167,000 miles and so is not covered by their so called warranty enhancement program.

Ecsessive oil consumption over last year increasing over time now using 5-6 quarts between oil change... toyota acknowledges oil consumption problem but will not repair'

Ze7 repair oil consumption - i failed this test and the car was repaired. this was after months of having to add oil (after the light would come on). 2 months after the repair the bearings on the balance shafts flew apart rendering the car undriveable. the repair specifically states that the lower block is not to be opened even though it would be on an engine that has had oil problems. this should have been part of the repair (at no cost to me) which would have alleviated this issue. the failure of toyota corp to notify owner of rav4's of this issue, fixing the issue before it becomes a problem and then not inspecting the entire engine for low oil generated problems has now left me with a $6500 dollar repair which more than the kelley blue price of the car. i am hoping to have this covered but so far have not been successful. i am now down one vehicle which has further complicated things.

Excessive oil consumption. began last summer. i've had to add at 5 qts since then. i bought a carton of 12 and only 3 or 4 remain, so probably more than 5. first occurrence the oil light came on in a hard right (?) turn. it took 2 qts. i'm having to train myself to check the oil far more frequently. the date below is estimated.

2008 toyota rav4. 1006,000 mileage. suddenly stalls while driving at any speed. taken to newark toyota dealership several times since june this year unable to fix the problem. stalled several times while driving on highway and on a city street.

At 149,000 miles my 2008 toyota rav4 started to consume oil. it is currently consuming a little over 3 quarts of oil in 3000 miles. this has caused a noticeable increase in noise in the valve train which i presume is due to oil starvation. i suspect that my vehicle will need total engine replacement at 230,000 miles. this is beyond unacceptable for an auto manufacturer not to recall.

There are have been 6 recalls to date since we purchased 2008 rav4. most recently, seatbelts were deemed unsafe in the rear, where we harness our children's carseats. this was in april 2016, and we have yet to be contacted about a remedy. please let me know if there is anything i can do to push for a fix to this situation. we are frustrated that this car is a lemon, but not according to law, since the recalls are rolled out over the course of the last 6-8 years.

Car started making loud noise, coming from the engine, when driving. the noise occurs at any speed once the car is running. i brought it into an auto mechanic and was told that it was a defective water pump and bearing. the car only has 47,093 miles.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 toyota rav4. the contact stated that the check engine and 4wd warning indicators illuminated. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 16v096000(seat belts); however, the part for the recall repair was unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the failure mileage was not provided. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. parts distribution disconnect.

My oil pressure warning light comes on less than 1600 miles after an oil change. i have had the "oil consumption" test three times. each time, i have been told my car has "passed" the test because it is "normal" for a car to be a quart low on oil after 1000 miles.

My vehicle is currently consuming 4 quarts approximately every 1,000 miles. the toyota district parts and service manager declined my request for a loaner vehicle, however, toyota has approved to reimburse me for any extra oil purchased. they do not have an estimated time of delivery for your part at this time as it is on national backorder with toyota.

I have a 2008 toyota rav4 sport that is burning 2 quarts of oil every thousand miles. i took it in for the oil consumption test in february 2016. it past but barely passed. i was told by the dealer that i could only do one test every year. that is all toyota will cover. so now today at the end of april 2017 i took it back in again since using a lot of oil and now having performance issues (slow acceleration almost causing accidents). told it definitely fails and they've never seen an engine use this much oil. it is now over 150,000 miles in and october 2016 toyota change their policy of unlimited miles and unlimited age to either 10 years from first date of service or hundred thousand miles. they said notices were sent out but they did admit that our notice probably went to the previous owner. we bought this is a certified used in 2011. so after admitting that they did not notify us of the change and having them wait to do another test until after the free repairs were authorized they definitely took advantage of this disabled veteran. totally unwilling to help correct their own engine issue.

Prior to 2015, 2 different service companies on 2 separate scheduled oil change informed me that the car had no oil. in 2015,received a warranty enhancement program related to excessive engine oil consumption from toyota. since being told on 2 separate occasions that the car had no oil during oil change service, i contacted toyota to schedule for the consumption test. brought the car on 7/7/15 then returned on 9/2/15 between 1100-1300 miles as instructed and was told it passed. however, on 1/20/16 brought car to another service company for scheduled oil change (first oil change after it supposedly passed test) and was told there was no oil marking on dip stick. therefore, was advised to bring it back to toyota. no oil change was performed but service company added oil (approx 3.5 quarts)per my request. spoke with a lady manager at toyota via phone to report the findings and was advised to schedule appointment for re-test. i brought car to toyota on 1/29/16 as scheduled and was told by service advisor that a re-test will not be performed because it already passed the test in sept. 2015 despite the latest finding of a dry dip stick in jan. 2016. toyota suggested to change the oil at my expense and to check if there was a leak. i declined it because i expected the appointment to be a re-test for oil consumption as indicated by a toyota manager. i eventually had an oil change on 2/17/16 performed by a non-toyota service company and was told the oil drained was 2.5 quarts which is 2 quarts below factory standards.

I own toyota rav 4 2008 limited for 9 years. i am tired of changing oils for the car for last 2 years. i got a letter from toyota stating that they will fix the excessive oil consumption issues under extended warranty maintenance. but when i contacted the dealership, they are saying there is rust on the car and they will fix it only if i pay the cost that might be ranging from500 dollars to more than 1000 dollars. i have contacted toyota executive office to discuss the matter but sorry to inform you all that i got a very harsh treatment from the executive rep. she was not even ready to reply my emails and informed me that she will only talk to me through phone, not thru email. after a serious discussion over the phone, she finally replied my emails but said they won't do anything to fix my issues. i feel terrible now. i am changing my car oil every 1000 miles and toyota is not ready to do anything to fix my issues. i am scared that my car will stop running soon. i even copied my mail to the president and never got a reply from him also regarding the harsh treatment from the rep.

The car is loosing about 1 quart of oil in 1100 miles and it started about 100,000 miles on the car. apparently this is a common problem, but the toyota dealer claims this is industry standard.

2008 toyota rav 4. consumer writes in regards to vehicle excessive oil consumption problems. *smd the consumer stated the vehicle has consumer 15 quarts of oil in 36,000 miles. also, there was a noise coming from the front brake. the dealer informed the consumer, there was some rust in the drum area that probably caused the noise. *jb

My vehicle was checked for excessive oil consumption in november 2015. the dealership ststed my vehicle did not have an oil problem. i am still adding oil to my vehicle less than 1,000 miles.

My car burns more oil than it should.when i took it in for the recall, they recomended ,i let them put new oil stem valve gaskets in for $530.00. now maybe i need them but, everytime, i take my car in for a recall the dealers want me to pay to get some thing fixed.enough is enouhg

My 2008 rav4 4-cylinders 85k miles consumes about a quart of oil every 150 miles. no leaks, no smoke, valve sounds while in motion. excessive oil consumption!

I am having oil burning issues with my rav4 also. it is a 2008, 4 cylinder. i have had my oil changed religiously in this car as it was my first new car. every 3000 miles and i have the all the paperwork. about 4-5 months ago, every time i press break and noticed the oil flicker on and off. stopped at a station and it was completely empty of oil. i had had an oil change about 2500 before this happened. i thought may be toyota dealership did not put enough engine oil as recommended. next time i took my car to firestone service and again today i found out that there is no engine oil left, the engine oil stick is completely dry. i was reading on online forums that a lot of consumer had same problem with their rav4. there is no recall from toyota and local dealer don't want to fix it.

The hose connecting the canister filter to the canister broke off driving in the rain and i didn't see until next day while 8 hrs away from home. called the local dealer they didn't have the part. no check engine light shown.i got home and have the canister filter replaced with the dealer and next day check engine, vsc and 4wd light came on, dealer says it cost $1800 to fix it. i researched online and lot of 2006 and up rav 4 owner have same issue. cannister hose broken or filter dropped and water getting into the system. i got toyota service bulletin t-sb-0098-09 which was updated to t-sb0161-11 on october 20,2011 for this issue. toyota had covered warranty for 2gr-fe engine from 2006-2011 sold on ca, ct, me, md, ma, nj, nm,vt,wa, ri under california long term emission warranty of 64 months or 70,000 miles which ever occurs first. toyota knew the issue and even added a new cover (part no 77641-0r020) the protect the canister filter and the hoses but they didn't issue the recall. a lot of people have same issue. the filter and hose are unprotected underneath the chassis and it can break or fall driving under normal driving in a rain or snow. i called toyota and they review my case and gave me case # but they won't fix it because my vehicle was not driven and sold on the aforementioned states. toyota has covered the warranty on the states with heavy snow and rain only. but these things are true for the state i am in too. remaining state standard 36 months 36,000 warranty. but this thing can happen to anyone at any mileage. toyota knew it and had a fix by putting the new cover but didn't issue a recall . the service bulletin even states the vehicles manufactured before certain vin number and mine does fall under it. i paid $220 to replace filter and $62.5 to diagnose. now they want another $1800 to fix it. i wish i could attached the service bulletin. updated 09/15/15*lj updated 11/08/2017*cn
