My engine seized on a moving highway. i had to have it towed to the nearest mechanic who identified the vehicle had very little oil in it despite just having had an oil change 3 weeks prior. he checked that there was no oil leal and advised to me take it to the dealership because he felt my vehicle had a faulty engine. my car was towed to the nearest toyota dealership who lied first about my vehicle having a faulty engine and then when i presented to them the existing literature on the engine oil consumption problem, only then did they confirm my vehicle as having a faulty engine. based on my vin, i have the 2az-fe engine which poses a safety risk to consumers in that it causes engine problems including failure. toyota knew of this defect when i purchased my vehicle and did not disclose this to me. they also issued a safety bulletin in 2011 but only to dealerships and not to consumers. toyota has not disclosed of this problem to its consumers and continues to regard their vehicles as safe. my safety was compromised because of toyota's dishonesty and deceit.
Toyota oil consumption test conducted. usage of ~3/4 qt per 1,200 miles. first noted excessive usage at ~ 95,000 mi. tested at 138,739 mi. 2.4l 4-cyl dohc engine. *tr
Received a warranty enhancement notification (extended warranty) for the excessive oil consumption. free fix. what a joke. they tell you to come in for the test, fill your oil to full and tell you to come back in 1200 miles. twelve hundred miles later you go back your car is at low/add level, they add 1 qt oil and state and i quote "found that vehicle burned 1qt of oil in 1,241 miles. that is ok to toyota standards". that last line tells it all. if you do the math, at 5000 miles, which they tell you to come in for an oil change, there would be no oil left to change with a 4.8qt engine oil limit. i couldn't believe toyota has such low standards. we have all toyotas in my household. with the we don't care attitude by toyota, we will become a honda household. i expected better, toyota standards have really deteriorated. dontbytoyota.com is available. just may buy it to warn potential customers. *tr
Rav4 2008 limited v4 water pump leaking at 78000 miles. leaking my $600 money i am looking for user to file class action. http://toyota.pissedconsumer.com/rav-4-water-pump-failure-class-action-20110719249797.html?company_id=5467. *tr
Low engine oil light came on at 4200 miles of scheduled 5000 mile oil change. dipstick checked and no oil was in engine. two quarts added and brought to dealership for oil consumption test. car filled with oil driven 1200 miles and brought back. dealer states approximately 1 quart of oil consumed and it does not qualify for excessive oil consumption correction. *tr
While stopped at a light waiting to turn left the rav4 engine began to rev and lurched forward with driver's foot still on the brake. driver put car into neutral while holding down the brake pedal to prevent the car hurtling into the intersection. driver then turned off the car and put gear shift to park. after 30 seconds restarted the car with foot on brake and the engine began to rev again with car in park. the engine noise was very loud. car was again turned off. car was restarted after about 2-3 minutes and engine behaved normally. owners took car to toyota dealer within an hour of the incident. toyota dealership ran diagnostic and manager said driver had foot on the accelerator when it happened which is certainly not true. dealer would not release a copy of the diagnostic report. owners have had all recall work done on the vehicle and have done regular maintenance as required in the owner manual. *tr
Excessive engine oil consumption @ 57851 miles.
My car has been needing oil changes more frequently. i am in getting oil change today and my car wasn't due for 1000 more mile and 1/18 (whichever came first). i have no leaks, haven't damaged a anything and its always done professionally.. its been changed at toyota, good year, oil change shops.no smoke or burning od oil. car gets regular maintenance.
Oil consumption.
Car runs through oil between 5000 recommended oil changes. have to constantly check if there is enough oil. no leaks, just goes through a lot of oil. *tr
I first heard knocking noise upon cold start-up. this has now become a chronic noise. when getting truck serviced for another matter the mechanic informed me that the vvt-i bolts were defective and needed to be replaced for a charge of $3500-$5600. he also noted this was expensive because it is a lexus engine. upon researching this more i discovered this is the same engine 2gr-fe v6 installed in the lexus rx350s with same problem. however, this has been a major recall by toyota for lexus vehicles but not toyotas. i contacted toyota but they refuse to address this issue even though this is exact same defect which is a recall for lexus models. see article //parts.olatheoyota.com/gr-series-engine.html. the recall is listed on nhtsa. once bolts loosen the vvt-i gear housing and sprocket to separate and result in the engine stopping while the vehicle is being driven, increasing the risk of a crash. see article: toyota recalls various lexus vehicles with engine bolt problems the bolts could become loose due to abnormal impacts 09/10/2013 | consumeraffairs by [xxx] i cannot understand how these defective bolts under a toyota body style, but on the same engine are excluded from this major recall. the serious consequences remain the same regardless of body style should bolts loosen during high speeds. i have escalated this complaint to the highest level at toyota with no results so i am compelled to file an official complaint with your department. we have a toddler on board each day driving this vehicle without funds to repair this problem and are now unable to sell the car. your attention to this matter is appreciated. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Just learned today that i need a new transmission for a 2008 rav4 with only 74,000 miles on it. had the car in for service at 72,000 miles where they did the 70k mi service to include multipoint/floor mat, replaced the water pump, brake fluid flush and "engine minor". i think something is wrong here. my 5 year or 100k prepaid warranty ended in june so no coverage available. shouldn't a transmission last longer than 70k miles? *tr
This vehicle has required about 3-4 quarts of oil to be added in between oil changes. the oil consumption test has been performed at 2 separate toyota dealerships, and both have stated that the vehicle is not using an excessive amount of oil and therefore does not require repairs. however, the vehicle continues to need 3-4 quarts of oil between oil changes.
The vehicle slows down and the engine shuts off while driving around 65 mph or higher the throttle control is not responding very dangerous . *tr
Vehicle started pinging when going up hills. checked oil and it didn't even register! had just had oil changed 2 weeks before. since this time, i have had to add about 5 quarts of oil. now i'm told toyota considers using 1 quart per 1,000 driving miles is "normal". the engine could burn up based on this excessive oil consumption leaving the occupants stranded. *tr
Have taken my car in 2 times to get the oil consumption test done and both times the dealer says it's within toyota's guidelines. the third time i called to have it done they told me i would have to pay so i just continue to add oil every 600 miles. i took to another mechanic they said this is not normal to burn this much oil and it's not leaking oil, they said they could pull the engine apart to tell me why it's leaking for $500.00, but i wish toyota would fix the issue knowing there is one, and they have an enhancement warranty for the problem good until 10/2016, however, they say i'm not within toyota guidelines, the first time i even noticed this issue was after i had car serviced at the dealer prior to a trip i was making, my oil light came on my stick had burnt oil on it as it was bone dry. i added thinking the dealer just didn't do a good job, well come to find out, i have been checking and adding ever since. in between oil changes less than 3,000 miles oil light has come on and completely dry no oil registering on the dip stick.
Water pump starting making incredible diesel / mechanical grinding sounds. coolant leaking from water pump. water pump bearing overheating - odor clearly discernible from inside vehicle. checked internet - this is a very common complaint among rav4 v6 owners - many owners having replaced water pump on this year vehicle at 25,000k miles! dealers charging anywhere from us $325.00 - $900.00. *tr
A little after its regular scheduled maintenance my 2008 rav4 started to make an odd noise (rattling) when reaching 40 mph at 1500 rpm. checked fluids and noticed that engine oil was dry (burnt oil on stick) and black atf. immediately replaced fluids (engine and ws atf). took car to dealer and they said they didn't noticed anything unusual. drove with tech and showed him the noise at specified conditions. he said more tests needed to be done. up until today they are not sure what the issue may be and suggested a bunch of different "fix" that i will have to pay for myself. found a tsb online for a similar issue (t-sb-0094-11). toyota should be held responsible and fix this issue at no cost to users. *tr
My oil warning light kept coming on when i was braking. i had approximately 2300 miles since my last oil change but took the car in to get checked. the mechanic found there was virtually no oil left in the engine. since then i have to put oil in my engine around every 500-700 miles. my car is experiencing excessive oil consumption. i just took my car into my closest toyota dealer and they said in 20 years they have never seen this problem. i feel like they are lying to me and just want the faulty part fixed. i don't know what my rights are and what i can do to get help. -thank you *tr
I began to notice a burnt oil smell when i would return home from school in the evening, i checked my oil, the dip stick showed not a trace of oil! the vehicle was half way between oil changes at the time, my husband added 4 quarts of oil (so we know for certain it was empty) and brought it to toyota. they "checked it", changed the oil, and sent us on our way telling us to monitor the oil level. this was at 68k miles. it was next due for an oil change at 73,000miles i checked the oil level yesterday at 71,000 miles and it was nearly empty. called the dealer again, was told they couldn't get me in for 10 days!! i called another toyota dealer who told me to bring it in. the service mgr acknowledged there was a problem with "certain rav 4 engines" and that a service bulletin had been issued to repair the issue (not a recall-he made that clear). he explained that i would have to follow their procedure before it can be repaired though by doing two oil consumption tests (that i have to pay $24.95 for, and drive 1200 miles each) then i would have to authorize them to do an engine removal and disassembly for $575 to determine it is not something i had done to the car. i have babied this vehicle from day one! i never go beyond 4000 miles for an oil change, ever. now i have to drive my family around in a potentially hazardous vehicle while they decide whether or not to repair the engine that they have known there was a problem with for years!! unacceptable! this is terrifying knowing that my engine could seize at any moment while i am on the highway driving with my child. it is equally as frightening to realize that i may end up having to pay $6000+ for a new engine for this piece of defective merchandise i am still paying for because toyota believes they are above the law. please hold them accountable. *tr
I've had my 08 toyota rav4 for over 4 years now. i get the oil changed on it every 5,000 miles regularly. i got it with about 25,000 miles on it and right around 70,000 miles i noticed that the oil light would come on before i reached my next oil change. it holds about 5 quarts and with being changed every 5,000 miles that means it is burning more then 1 quart every 1,000 miles! my brother-in-law did some research and found out that this is becoming a problem with many rav4's with the pistons in the 2az fe motor. i love this car so much and it breaks my heart to know that there is something wrong that i can't fix. i don't want to get a different car but now i have to!
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 toyota rav4. the contact stated that the vehicle was consuming an abnormal amount of engine oil and would smell of burning oil. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the failure was unable to be diagnosed. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 94,000 and the current mileage was 95,000.

The car is burning oil. i was told that it was burning 1/2 quart every 1200 miles & to keep adding oil. that this usage was wnl. after an online search i find this is a common problem that toyota has not been dealing with. i have an extended warranty that will be running out soon. i feel the car should be recalled and they should do the right thing. i have filled a complaint with the usa cooperate office. *tr
Bought the car new, at about 85k miles i noticed it began to use more oil. the engine now uses about 2 to 3 quarts between oil changes (every 3k)
On 12/18/2013 started car in the morning and and engine started knocking(4 cylinder). checked oil and added 2 quarts. then on friday 12/20 drove 4 mile engine and valves started knocking and rattling. from other complaints it seems that the engine in blown. i bought the car new and have served it religiously. how can an engine with 75000 miles on it lose that much oil? i have had cars with over 125000 miles on them and they didn't lose that much! apparently there has been multiple complaints about this engine and so far toyota has done nothing about. *tr
I purchase my 2008 toyota rav 4 in 2012 with 39,739 miles, currently it has about 56,000 miles. the engine is burning oil. i noticed that over the last 6 months that the oil light will suddenly go on (car is not due for an oil change, under mileage and under date range needed) and i will pull into a gas station and i am told that there is barely any oil in the engine. this is shocking...as the warning light only went on when it was practically empty. this is also concerning as the car is usually way under the need for an oil change. it is not leaking oil, it is burning it. i plan on bringing it to the dealership on 12/21. hopefully i will have some answers; however, this is very concerning and very dangerous. *tr
When starting my car my 4 wheel drive light, engine light, vsc light wouldn't go out. when taken this to my mechanic i was told that the vacuum system. after checking everything , things seemed to be ok. when it happened again i was told that the gas cap was put on to tight. the lights where reset. in january it began to happen again. took it to a new mechanic, i was to told that the charcoal filter needed to be replaced, which i needed to wait about 10 days for it to come in. replaced the about 25 miles later lights came back on. new clamps where put on all hoses. 50 miles later lights back on , now code is saying the charcoal canister faulty. now that needs to be replaced. my mechanic did research, found out that their has been many complaints about this problem. this part cost over 800$ i myself have read other rav4 owners that this isn't a new problem. how long or how many complaints does it take for someone to do something about this. their have been times when this has happens the car sputters and really doesn't go anywhere. does my life have end when my vehicle does this and i get hit from behind. oh don't even get me started on the amount of oil this car uses. maybe my engine needs to blow up first. please finally do something before someone gets hurt. or is this what needs to happen. *tr
Engine burns oil. no oil light warning comes on when there is very very little oil in the pan. terrible rattle noise coming from engine. tsb 0094 for 2az-fe engine. *tr
Change oil every 3000 miles. in sept changed oil and was told oil was low. today had car inspected only 1500 miles into oil change and my engine light was on i was told the dip stick was clean. seems the engine is burning oil. i see many other people complaining of the same issue. i have not taken it to toyota dealer but plan to have them check this out, but i am sensing from the other same complaints something is not right. hope this gets investigated. *tr
Check engine oil light came on; went o dealer to have checked; lost 3 quarts of oil since last schedules oil change. dealer says it was within their acceptable range. today called and said i need new engine which they say will cost me thousands
At around 80k miles my mechanic noticed the engine was burning up oil too quickly and advised i bring it in more often for him to check the oil and to add if needed. he did this for me until one day all the dashboard lights came on and he told me my engine was shot. i purchased a 100k warranty and when i took it into toyota they said they would run a test and to come back in 1200 miles. the parts manager even admitted that this was a very common problem with the 2008 fleet of 4 cylinder engines! as soon as i left the engine cut out while i was on the freeway. towed the car back to toyota, they kept it there a month waiting for the warranty tech to come inspect the engine. he claimed i did not maintain my engine and that the warranty would not cover any costs. i ended up selling the car to a mechanic at the shop for 800$ this covered the bill toyota sent me for having the vehicles engine taken apart, they were going to charge me to put it back together but was offered the money from an employee to take it off my hands. i bought this car brand new in 2008 with the 100k warranty, i hate toyota and will never purchase a vehicle from them ever again and i tell everyone i know to stay clear from these jerks. *tr
My family and i went on a trip to georgia and before i made the trip i changed the oil i always check the oil before i change it and it was down 1/2 a quart. when i got home after putting 1800 miles on the car it was down 1/2 a quart again. i called the dealer where i bought the car, and explained the problem, they told me it was normal for that engine. i then research on the internet and found that people were having the same complaints with the toyota 4.5 engine. as mileage gets higher the problem gets worse, i am afraid that my extended warranty may run out before it gets repaired, as a lot of toyota car customers have reported. i am a 100% disabled veteran the va gave me a grant to help pay for this car and a trailer hitch to carry my scooter with me. in the years past i have worked on cars and have spoken to many mechanics and they say this is not normal. i feel this car has to be recalled for this issue. my vehicle is now in the oil consumption test stage, we have to go 2 1/2 hours to the dealer just to have the oil checked. other people say this is to prolong until extended warranty runs out. *tr
I have a 2008 toyota rav4, 4 cylinder engine, which currently has a technical service bulletin out advising toyota dealerships that the 4 cylinder engine for that particular year is defective. the piston rings do not properly remove the oil as the piston travels up and down, and as a result the engine consumes excessive oil. my vehicle uses approximately a quart and a half of oil in only 1,500 miles. toyota said that they would fix it under the power train warranty if it's within 5 years or 60,000 miles, which mine is over the miles with 70,000+. so, i have a 5 year old vehicle and i have to pay for new pistons and rings, because toyota doesn't want to designate this as a recall for their defective engine. toyota prides itself on its reputation and reliability of their vehicles, but they acknowledge that they have a defective motor, but want us to pay for the repair or in some cases a portion of the repair, which is costly......around $5,000.00. *tr
In august, oil light flashes when i make a hard stop; took it to dealer and they put a monitor on it and told me to return at 1200 miles. i forgot and only remembered when i started to see the oil light blink on again when i came to a stop. i came back in to dealer in november, they read the monitor and told me i needed to have my engine rebuilt; the service tech. met with a mgr, rechecked readings and since the mileage was 4000 on the monitor, they thought the readings were skewed. so, they reset the monitor, added oil to the car and i will ensure that i come back at 1200 miles to find out the status. i was told that the car is safe to drive (going on a long drive for the holidays). i am seeing many comments online similar to mine and they relate that there is a problem with the rav4 engine. i called toyota usa and reported the issue to them earlier this month. they told me to wait to hear what the dealer says. i now drive with 2 quarts of oil in my car and will monitor my oil levels throughout my trip to and from ny. i am very concerned about this and based on what i seen written online so far, i expect that the dealer is going to tell me that i will have to pay for engine repairs because right now they are saying they are not aware of this issue occurring with the vehicles they service. *tr
Engine is burning too much motor oil. have to keep putting a liter of oil in the car every two weeks. there has been a technical service bulletin released by toyota that it is a problem with the r&r piston and ring set. my vin id is impacted by this. *tr
I was driving down a street when my car suddenly died. the engine would not turn over though the battery finally turned on. my car was towed to the local toyota dealership. the service department took the engine apart and said a valve spring broke which caused the valve to drop down and make contact with the #4 piston, breaking it completely apart. (it ended up in the oil pan.) my engine is ruined and must be replaced. they quoted a price of $7000 to replace the engine. the service department manager said there was nothing i could have done that would cause the spring to break like that or cause that kind of damage. my vehicle is 9,000 miles outside of warranty (though still within 6-year time frame of warranty). my car has 69,000 miles on it. *tr
Similar to several other complaints on this model, my vehicle is also exhibiting excessive oil consumption, up to 1 qt. within 1,000-1,500 miles, based on my own consumption tests. the dealer has changed the oil since i purchased this vehicle. the car begin to burn oil at around 66,000 miles. many times i have complained of this - dealer claims this is "normal" consumption and within specifications as does toyota motor sales. however, toyota has issued a technical service bulletin (t-sb-0094-11) which acknowledges a consumption issue on my model as well as several others. i have read online message boards of other toyota owners with the exact same issue. there is a known problem with the piston assembly that is causing this, however, toyota refuses to remedy the problem if the vehicle is out of warranty. i contend that this issue was likely present within my warranty but, since i didn't discover it until afterwards, i am simply out of luck with an engine that consumes excessive oil. the dealer quoted me $3,400 to repair. i purchased a toyota for its perceived reliability, but like other toyota owners, i too am stuck with a high maintenance vehicle that i too will have to monitor closely as long as i own it. i feel that this problem warrants a recall, due to the extent of the problem in terms of vehicles affected and the potential severity of engine problems. sadly, toyota should stand by their products! *tr
Our 2008 rav4 oil light came on and we had just had our oil changed so we thought the business didn't add enough oil when they did the oil change. we took it back and was told it was an oil consumption problem that this model year has. first we heard about it. we took it to toyota dealer in omaha and they immediately said we had no warranty for this without even looking at it. red flag. they then did a test where they did another oil change and we drove it for 1000 miles then took it back. they said we did not have an oil consumption problem. fast forward to august 2014 and the oil light again came on. the dip stick was dry. we took it again to dealer and was told we did have an oil consumption. he didn't even look at it. my husband was furious since we had been told we didn't have that problem 13 months earlier. we have been told it would take $5000 to $6000 to fix it since it would require a new engine. since then we have found out a lot of people have had this problem and toyota refuses to do anything about it even though they put the faulty engines in these vehicles. the are trying to shirk their responsibility because this recall cost a little more. where does this leave the consumer? if we trade it we just lost $5000 to $6000 in value. if we don't we are stuck with a faulty vehicle. there should be a recall for this oil consumption problem. obviously this is a problem that came right out of the manufacturing of this vehicle. my husband called toyota and they just argued with him. no help. *tr
Water pump required replacement. *tr
The engine died on our vehicle. dealer said it stopped working but would have to take apart the engine to find out why. they said they could not find any leaks but it ran out of oil & ceased the engine. it was only 4 months since our last oil change. people are telling us it should not have ran out that fast without there being a leak. toyota said they will not cover the repair because it is out of warranty. by only 525 miles!!!! this is our second toyota & we loved them. we were intending on being life long customers. but now we will never buy another toyota! especially since i have read other people having the same problem. they need to recall these vehicles!! we now have $13,000 left to pay on the vehicle & can't afford to fix it & have no other vehicle. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 toyota rav4. the contact stated that upon inspection, the vehicle was consuming an abnormal amount of oil and the oil pressure warning light was illuminated intermittently. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the mechanic stated that the problem was normal. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 74,000.
My alternator went in my vehicle but was discovered was disturbing. i had just had my oil changed 4 weeks prior and the vehicle was almost empty of oil. if the alternator had not failed my engine would have blown due to the lack of oil. the lack of oil is due to the piston assembly in my 2008 toyota rav4. this is a known problem with toyota since they issued a technical service bulletin on aug. 11 known as sb002411 and sb009411. toyota said the problem was traced to the piston assembly, yet i have not received any notification from toyota regarding this issue. there isn't any recall. this repair is only covered for 60 months or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first. in my situation, the financial burden of this repair is on myself ($4-$5k). this is the second issue with toyota rav 4 where it should be a recall. my prior issue was the steering intermediate shaft which was making a clucking sound and if not addressed the i could lose control of the vehicle, that financial burden was $800. both should be a recall by toyota. *tr

I went to the dealership for my normal oil change in sept 2013 and was told there was no oil on the dipstick, rav had 85,000 miles at the time. no lights had come on that alerted me to an issue. they noted it on the records and said they would keep an eye on it. i went for my next oil change nov 2013 and same issue of no oil on dipstick and again no warning lights. they noted it again on paperwork and said we might need to look into why it is using oil. we made a phone call to a friend who is a toyota mechanic and was told there was a service bulletin issued to the dealerships about oil consumption issues. dealership did not say anything about this to me either time. we have watched the oil ever since and have to add oil between changes. in january 2015 we received warranty enhancement notification about oil consumption issue. in february we had oil consumption test performed and was told the rav was within normal limits of oil usage. i called toyota customer service and logged a case. they told me to go back to dealership between 1100-1300 miles and have oil level checked again. it was 1500 miles later before i could get back in to dealership. they noted the rav had used 1 quart of oil in 1500 miles. i am being told that is normal usage and at this time my vehicle will not be included in the "fix". the rav only has 120,000 miles on it. *tr
Excessive engine oil consumption. adding 1quart every 700 miles and getting worse. *tr
While slowing down for a stoplight, i pulled into the open left hand lane so as not to be behind a tanker truck, and with my foot on the brakes tried to stop the car at the light, when suddenly the engine revved as if the car was in neutral and rather than coming to a full stop at the light, i slid through a busy intersection. had i not been in a lane without traffic and had there not been oncoming traffic, i would have caused a serious accident. once through the intersection i pulled off the road and came to a full stop. then i drove to a nearby gas station and drove around their parking lot to test the brakes and they seemed fine. i also checked to see if the gas pedal was free from the carpet and it was. *tr
Excessive oil consumption i went for an oil change as i do every 3000 miles and was told there was little oil. they looked for leaks etc. none found. thought it was a fluke. about 1500 miles in my engine light comes on my brother in law who is a certified mechanic for 30 years and takes care of my car tells me my car is consuming oil and your talking a big job advised me to take it to the dealer to run a consumption test which i did and yes that is what i am told. there is nothing i can do unless i pay to have it fixes which is very costly i was advised to check oil every 1000 miles and fill. upon research this has been reported by numerous toyota owners not only on rava4's but other models as well around the 2006/2008 time frame. toyota admits to problem and fixes in later models but does not do anything to fix a known defect!!!! i have joined every law suit, complaint board, etc. and for this reason will never buy another toyota. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 toyota rav4. the contact stated while driving approximately 70 mph the engine, four wheel drive, traction control and esc warning indicators illuminated continuously until the engine was turned off. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer three times. the technician detected a leak in the evaporation canister which was repaired. in addition, the computerized system was reset twice on separate occasions. the failure recurred after the repairs were performed. the manufacturer was not notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 124,191.
My vin number is on their tsb list and they knew their problems and still trying to play games. toyota is trying everything they can to screw up with consumer. they want you to test the oil consumption even you already tested three times before. they are not answering your phones. audi already lost their case. toyota will be the same. this is the first toyota and also be the last one. *tr
