Since i purchased the rav4 i notice the engine oil was burning out very quickly causing me to run the car on almost no oil. warning lights only came on when there was no more oil in car. i'm putting in 1 to 3 quarts of oil every two to three months. i have to check oil every week. took car to dealership told me i had a oil leak but since i did not see any oil leaking at all i got a second opinion and found out about the stuck oil rings that cause catalytic converter. *tr
Check engine light came on, followed by all of the maintenance lights. the vehicle had recently had an oil change but when oil was checked, there was no oil left. took the vehicle to a toyota dealership and they checked for leaks and completed an oil change. 1500 miles later, the vehicle is low on oil again. repeated a couple of times. vehicle is burning oil, mechanics cannot find any problems. *tr
The engine is burning oil and i am burning at a rate of about 1 quart every 2000 miles. i have had to add oil due to low oil 3 times. no leaks, all due to engine burn. *tr
I have begun noticing my engine consuming oil about 2 years ago. reported it to the dealer and got a reply that oil consumption is normal. i have always had regularly scheduled oil change. today my oil has been below the minimum level to almost dry, when my last oil change was at 99,000 miles ( current mileage at 102k). i don't know if it damaged my engine but the oil consumption has been getting worse. *tr
I have noticed multiple occasions since 01/20/13 that my rav4 has been low on oil. i have had it checked, and have checked it myself, and have found it to be so low it doesn't even register on the dipstick, and only after driving less than 1000 miles. each time this has happened i have had to add anywhere from 1-3 quarts of oil to get it to where it should be on the dipstick. there are no leaks under the vehicle, and there's no noticeable smoke coming from the exhaust. i have been advised by my mechanic that this is an ongoing problem with multiple years of rav4 vehicles. i am scared to continue driving, with having to constantly check the oil, but i have no choice as i don't have a second vehicle. i feel toyota has left me holding the bag for a defect they won't admit is their faulty equipment/engineering. *tr
Oil consumption problem.
This model toyota has a record of stuck oil rings causing excessive oil consumption which leads to failure of engine and catalytic converter. see new york times oct 14,2011 and the hundreds of on line complaints about using one quart of oil every 1 k miles. in november of last year my technician did a complete check with oil change, in jan this year the oil was down one quart and in feb. i did another oil change with only two quarts of oil left in the pan when it takes 4-1/2 quarts. i took my rav 4 to the dealer(4-23-2013) i bought it from and without looking at it i was told the oil rings get stuck and i need an engine repair for $3,000 plus tax. i had them check it out and i got a written document with the repair that is needed documented. this "needs" to be a recall item. if a car doing 70mph has an engine failure due to loss of oil then the person will loose steering and brake control leading to a serious accident and most likely death. toyota did two recalls on my car in april, door switch needed a drop of oil and rear suspension needed to be re-torqued. made a big deal out of what cost pennies to fix. now a $3,000 engine repair and we need to go to small claims court or class action suit or plead to you to help us get this a recall item. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota rav 4. the contact stated that she noticed that she had an oil consumption issue with her vehicle. the contact stated that she noticed that she was taking the vehicle in to get an oil change more that usual. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection but the cause of failure was unknown. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 126,000. the vin was unavailable.
Current mileage on car is 114,000. since car turned 94,000 has had internal oil leak and need to add 2.5 q of oil approx every 1,500-2,000 miles. my mechanic just found out that in 2011, toyota put out a service bulletin about excessive oil consumption on this car make and model year, and other toyotas due to a faulty piston assembly. they only cover this repair up until 60,000 miles. this is an engine defect and mileage should have nothing to do with it. cost to repair is $5,500 according to my toyota dealer. this should be a recall. paying over $5,000 for a vehicle repair because of toyota's faulty engine should be illegal. please make toyota pay for this!! this is happening to thousands of people. i spoke with a supervisor at toyota customer service and he said there was nothing he could do for me (except offer me a slight incentive toward buying a new car - i will never buy a toyota again!) *tr
I change my oil every 3,0000 miles even synthetic oil recommends that 5000 miles are dealers recommended and car can run even longer on a full synthetic oil. but no matter what they say i change mine every 3000 miles. for last many oil change i find my oil level to be very very low. i mean almost 1 and a half court down, in less then 30000 miles. funny thing is i put half court of oil between the 3000 miles driven on oil changes. so theoretically it was 2 qt down from oil. this problem i started to notice around 60,000 miles on the engine. there is no leaks. i have good understanding of cars as i have worked on honda accords and camrys from older models. i have changed steering pump to gaskets to speed sensors and many more on cars. i can assure that this car does not have any leaks except for oil pan get slightly wet around the bolt area because of perhaps needs a seal or new bolt. in total that oil wont add up to more than 10-20 drops in total through out the time of oil change if that. this extreme amount of engine oil burnout seems like a common problem with this car. too common to believe it was made by toyota. im very surprised as to why toyota won't recognize as their fault. (well not really that surprised). *tr
My wife was driving a 2007 rva 4 limited when the car ahead of her suddenly stopped. speed was 25 to 30 mph in stop and go traffic. she braked and collided with the car ahead of her. my wife was able to catch herself and was sitting up right when the air bags deployed. there was a delay in the airbags by several seconds after the front collision. soon after the airbags deployed, thick black smoke came up through the steering column. my wife evacuated the car and within five minutes the car was totally engulfed in flames. i am concerned on the delay in airbag deployment and the fire and speed at which it spread. we loved our rav but have a concern about buying any toyota product. *tr
Engine burns oil excessively ( consumes 1q at every 900-1000 miles)
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota rav4. the contact stated that the engine oil required to be continuously dispensed into the oil reservoir. the failure also recurred after an oil change. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who performed an oil consumption test. the technician advised that the piston assembly would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 50,000. the vin was unavailable.
Water pump failed at 46000 miles needing to be replaced along with the pulley assembly. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota rav-4. the contact stated that while driving 25 mph, the vehicle lost power and the motor became inoperable without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the failure was that the motor oil was abnormally low and damaged the engine. the engine was replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and who stated that the vehicle was not under any warranty and offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 97,000 and the current mileage was 99,000. ....updated 10/11/12 *bf updated 10/16/2012*js

Excessive oil consumption. i have observed excessive oil consumption between oil changes the oil lamp glows showing there is more than normal oil consumption. toyota dealers have run tests but have failed to identify problem or suggest a solution. *tr
My vehicle has been burning excessive amounts of oil. it has been checked and there has been a repair @ a toyota dealer i also was told there is a recall on the engine but i need to get a gasket fixed again. i was told there needs to be a test done of how much oil was burning which i think is a bunch of crap because they know a problem does exists and toyota neglects to fix it. in the past few years i have been getting oil added at least once a month and my vehicle also shakes very badly while waiting at lights of just sitting still. also, a few years ago my door caught on fire and i was accused of doing it which i tried to tell the staff at toyota of braintree where i purchased the vehicle that i would not burn up my car but they kept insisting i did horrible things to make the door catch fire, like pouring water in the door riding with the window down in pouring rain putting lit matches in it. that was horrible i had to pay out of pocket over $600.00 then fight to get my money back after 2 years. when i confronted the dealership, they told me to come in and they would accommodate me; they wanted me to give back my vehicle get another one and have a payment, which i didn't do because that is not right to sell a defective product. my vehicle was paid off in 2 years and this is the service i get from toyota? another payment? no! then the drive shaft/seal needed replacing, and then the window fell out $300 + which was another out of pocket cost. now, i am totally disgusted with this vehicle after all of these problems and i brought it new. in light of that, i have decided that i will now go to the media to see if there is any help i can get because this is not fair that toyota does not stand up to its products again, this is a problem that needs to be fixed at no cost to myself asap because i have put too much money in a vehicle that should not have these problems
The vehicle drops power under light throttle under 60mph. tach shows loss of rpm's and you can actually feel the vehicle responding to that loss. no check engine light being displayed. *tr
Car began smoking from the exhaust. engine lights came on. pulled over. no oil. filled with oiled, waited awhile and was able to drive car home. later went to dealer and they suspect possible ring or valve failure and was advised to carry oil in the car and check oil level before and after driving to prevent engine seize. contacted dealer and toyota, but they claim since it is after the warranty and because we missed some of our scheduled oil changes they would not be responsible. however, i have read of others with the same problem even though they did all their scheduled oil changes. *tr
1. my car uses an alarming amount of oil (1 quart before every 1500 miles). 2. in addition, the oil warning light never comes on. i discovered this defect when i first realized my car was burning an enormous amount of oil, and i was three quarts low just prior to my oil change. *tr
Paint "bubbling-up" and peeling; paint fading. losing oil.
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota rav4. while driving approximately 15 mph, the contact heard a clunking noise coming from the engine. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostics. the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. the dealer requested a toyota engineer come to inspect the vehicle in an attempt to find the cause of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 5,000. updated 08/29/12*lj
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota rav-4. the contact stated that when the vehicle was started, the check engine light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the contact was informed that the pistons in the engine failed and the engine would have to be replaced with either a new one or a rebuilt one. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted about the failure and offered no assistance. the failure mileage was approximately 50,000. the current mileage was approximately 128,000. the vin was unavailable.
This is an ongoing issue of excessive oil consumption. it has been an issue since my vehicle was purchase new. i noticed that i had to get my oil changed every 3000 miles and could not make it to 5000 miles as recommended by my mechanic for oil changes. this has gotten worse as my car has aged. i now run out of oil (oil indicator light comes on and not a drop on the dipstick) every 1200-1300 miles. i have to carry quarts of oil in my car all the time to be sure i don't get stuck with a seized engine and i need to top off my oil at least twice in between 3000 mile oil changes. i have spoken with other rav owners as well as my oil change establishment and i understand this is a common and known issue for ravs. toyota needs to address this.
Excessive oil consumption. 1+ quart every 2500 miles. contacted toyota corporate and they could careless about it. there are many complaints about this issue on the internet forum. engine model affected 2az-fe. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota rav4. the contact stated while driving approximately 30 mph the fwd, engine and stability control warning indicators illuminated continuously. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnosis and the oxygen sensor was replaced. on a separate occasion while driving in reverse the vehicle unexpectedly accelerated and the rpms increased. the gear lever was shifted into park and the engine was turned off. the vehicle was previously repaired under a recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 11v113000 (vehicle speed control). the problem existed before the recall and persisted after the recall remedy repair was performed. the vehicle was repaired five times due to the unintended acceleration. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the failure mileage and vin were unavailable.
Oil consumption issue - dealer conducted a test and passed the vehicle despite it burning a quart of oil at 1100 miles - which points it a 0.009 quarts per mile - this means and 5000 miles (the recommended mileage between oil changes) the car has burned through 4.54 quarts when it only holds 4.5 quarts - it consumes all the oil between oil changes. how can this car pass the test?
