Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC problems on 2010 Toyota Prius

2010 prius repeatedly exhibited the braking defect at issue in recent recall (sudden lurch forward upon encountering bump while braking to stop)--recall service performed 5 weeks ago. although the sudden lurching stopped (until today) after the recall service, the braking behavior then had a consistently odd feeling requiring increased pressure to fully stop (though no more sudden lurching forward when encountering bump). then today the old lurch forward suddenly recurred when encountering bump while slowing to a stop. dealership contacted and says they have no further remedy beyond recent computer adjustment performed as part of february, 2010 recall--basically totally disinterested. *tr

I previously filed a complaint about my 2010 prius regarding braking failure over uneven road surfaces, case #[xxx] . i took my car in to our local toyota dealer yesterday to have the issue taken care of (i also received a recall notice about the problem) i got my car back and today i experienced the same problem again while braking and going over a bump in the road. i want your agency to be aware that the toyota fix may not be working. i will be contacting the dealership and toyota about this safety issue. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while driving at speeds of approximately 25 mph on normal road conditions, the engine stalled without warning. after several attempts, the engine was restarted and the vehicle resumed normal operation. the dealer was contacted in regards to the failure. recently, the vehicle was repaired per nhtsa campaign id number 10v039000 (service brakes, air: antilock: control unit/module). the contact was concerned that the recall repairs were insufficient and potentially caused the recent failure. there were no further repairs. the failure mileage was 6,905 and the current mileage was unknown.

We own a 2010 prius, [xxx] . it is one of the vehicles that was subject to the abs actuator ecu update safety recall notice. i took the car in early this month and had the update installed. the problem described, regarding light pedal pressure and the car not braking correctly occasionally seems to fit well with what i experienced. in the middle of braking, trying to make full use of the regeneration feature, the car sometimes stopped braking momentarily. i experienced that this was more likely to happen on a bumpy road. in the 6 months or so i drove the car, prior to the update, i experienced this problem roughly 12 times. i am sad to report however that in the two weeks since the car was updated, i have already experienced two additional events after the update that seem exactly like what i experienced before the update. i took the car back to my dealer (prestige toyota, in ramsey, nj) and someone there tested it and was convinced that the update was installed. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated he previously received repairs under nhtsa campaign id number 10v039000 (service brakes, air: antilock: control unit/module). prior to the recall, the contact had experienced a delay in brake response when traveling over rough road surfaces. following repairs, the failure persisted but would occur on various road surfaces, including flat and dry surfaces. the failure mileage was 6,800 and the current mileage was 7,300. the vin was not available. updated 06/29/10 *bf

2010 prius brake ecu update did not solve problem. this is an update to a prior complaint, reference # 10300235. the brakes failed under the same circumstances and exhibited the same behavior as in the previous complaint. the dealer, huntington toyota, allegedly updated the ecu on 2/24/2010. the car loses braking ability briefly while slowing down (below 10 mph) and passing over a rough road surface or pothole. the sensation is one of the car surging forward. this has happened several time since the upgrade, the latest occurrence being 3/11/2010. *tr

I recently got a recall on my 2010 prius but still having a problem with brakes. i went to check on the problems today (saturday, march 13, 2010), however, they said the lead mechanic was not there and could not help me with discussing problems. they wanted me to set up an appointment again during the weekdays (which will be a more problematic for me since i work full time and they don't offer "rental" service either). i have a great fear of driving this car again on the road where there could be lots of unexpected accidents. i generally don't understand that there was nobody who could take a look at my vehicle and give me some advice when there are lots of customers who are looking to get some help during the weekend. my brake still slips and i loose my control over my brakes when i go over pot holes or slowing down and making turns. again, the "recall" service did not give me any solutions. i discussed about this problem again with sales representative at toyota dealership and asked them possible options to return my car or getting a new one since it's been quite long days ever since i started complaining about the same problems, and they said no to everything. i am not sure how i can drive this "unsecured" car anymore. *tr

2010 prius -already had the brake software fix -continues to accelerate slightly when it goes over potholes with the brake pedal depressed - usually low speed. *tr

Today i drove the car to see what would happen if the car was accelerating and i wanted to stop it other than putting on the brakes and hitting the park button. i was trying to reproduce the conditions which have resulted in numerous accidents and more than one life. while slightly accelerating i first tried to stop the car by pressing the power button. this did nothing. i then pressed the brake pedal on the left side which is your hand brake, hard until the brake light came on and the alarm sounded. in spite of this the car kept going! the only way i could stop the car was by stopping the car with the foot brake and then pressing the park button. *tr

I have filed a complaint here before about my 2010 toyota prius, where the brakes were supposedly fixed last week by toyota following the recall. however, just today the braking problem, when hitting bumps in the road, seems to not have been fixed at all. driving in the dc area, where there are a lot of potholes around, it is easy to test whether the brakes are fixed or not. while driving along the road today, nearing my house, i hit a pothole, and just as it had been happening before, the brakes seemed to completely let go and the car lurched forward for a split second until the brakes seemed to regain power and i was able to press down on them again. prior to that incident, and not 10 minutes earlier, i hit a small pothole while braking lightly and the brakes gave out just slightly. it's an unmistakable feeling, having experienced it numerous times before toyota finally decided to recall the 2010 prius. *tr updated ivoq 07/08/10.*jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. she confirmed she has experienced brake failure several times in the vehicle. while attempting a right turn over railroad tracks with her foot on the brake pedal, the vehicle abnormally lunged forward and began to accelerate. she continued to depress the brake pedal until the vehicle came to a stop. she also noticed that when driving uphill, the vehicle was hesitant to accelerate. the vehicle had not yet been taken to the dealer for inspection. the failure mileage was 65,000 and the current was 96,077.

Complaint regarding: 2010 toyota prius. since i purchased the car in september of 2009, the brakes fail when i am braking and hit a bump, pothole, or uneven road surface. the brakes fail for a second or two, and sometimes the car lurches forward. the issue occurs approximately once a day, every day. on march 6, 2010, i had the recall software for the 2010 prius done in the service department at the mike calvert toyota dealership in houston, texas. on the way home, i experienced the brake failure again when i was braking and drove over a small pothole. i experienced the problem later that day when braking to stop at a red light, the pavement surface descended slightly beneath the car, the brakes lapsed, and the car lurched forward. i called the dealership. they referred to the materials supplied by toyota and told me to call toyota at 1-800-331-4331 to notify toyota that the recall fix did not work. upon calling this number and navigating the options on the automated system, i sat through a long recording stating that there was a recall of the 2010 prius. the option available to speak with an agent did not allow me to do so. *tr

The prius purchased 1/3/10. on 3/6/10 the vehicle would not stop and hit another car. the vehicle was towed to north hollywood toyota. the brakes failed to operate causing the prius to hit another car. this all occurred within the county of los angeles, california. the vehicle can be examined for this defect. *tr

My 2010 prius had the brake software updated before i purchased it. i have owned the car for 12 days. during that time i have experienced a braking problem on 3 instances. in each case i was slowing down at a constant rate of deceleration when i hit a pothole or other rough surface. for a split second the rate of deceleration was interrupted. in other words it felt like i had let up on the brake which i did not do. on the third incident my wife was a passenger in the car and also noticed that for a split second it felt like i eased off the brake. i took my car to the toyota dealer to make sure the software had been updated. they confirmed that it had and make a note of my experience. i have read about the problem with the brakes on the hybrid ford fusion and the problem with my car may be the same. that is that the road bump prompts the computer to momentarily interrupt the regenerative braking and thus make it feel like the brakes failed. *tr

2010 prius 3 times i have the brakes grab and locked several times in a row when i have been applying very slow pressure. twice while backing out from parking space and once while going forward slowly in my driveway. they then began acting normally. i am concerned that this could happen in traffic causing an accident. i can't find a place at toyota to report. i was in an accident with 2002 toyota prius with unexplained acceleration in october 2009-already reported. *tr

My 2010 toyota prius will sometimes brakes very hard under light brake pedal pressure when backing up. it happens every 2 to 3 days and can be when the car is hot and just driven, or cold and been parked for hours. when this occurs,it will continue to happen no matter how many times the brakes are applied in reverse, with the lightest of brake pressure, the brake apply very hard. then after the event, say a mile or two later, when backing up, the brake will act normally to the brake pedal pressure exerted. *tr

A safety recall procedure performed recently on the 2010 prius to fix the lurching brakes has not been working out. i had it done recently, and this is past the recall. in more than 3 occasions recently i almost hit the car in front of me while going over a manhole stopping over for a signal going as low as 25mph. the car jumped forward despite my normal braking to get it to stop, forcing me to brake hard coming to a forced stop. i am afraid someday i may not be so lucky !! wish, toyota put more thought into their solutions than rushing into the market with sub std. procedures & cars !! *tr

I was driving my brand new, 3 weeks old, 2010 toyota prius on a rural road in clark county washington on thursday, march 4, 2010, when i attempted to slow down to make a very sharp left turn. i was applying my brakes when all of the sudden i realized i was not slowing down much and was not going to make the turn. i have maneuvered this turn hundreds of times and know that one must slow to almost a crawl to make the turn. i travel this area at least 1-2 times per week, so i was not unfamiliar with the turn. it felt like my car initially slowed some, but then slowing ceased and i ended up on embankment. the front of my car was damaged severely. i was not hurt but left with a very frightening experience to deal with. i am a excellent driver and have never had a wreck in the 31 years i have been driving. i believe my brakes initially engaged, but then due to the rural road surface, and pebbles left on the road from previous ice and snow, may have caused my brakes to not work as they should have. i attempted to contact toyota but they are closed due to it being the weekend. my car is at the auto body shop as i write this letter. my concern is that i was allowed to purchase a vehicle, that is on the recall list with such a dangerous defect such as "the brakes not working properly." i have a teenage son who is just learning to drive and would it have been him, the accident may have been worse. please advise how you believe i should proceed. i am very concerned, upset, and do not feel safe in this car! and i certainly do not want to transport my children, other family members and friends in an unsafe vehicle that i just spent $33,000.00 on. i was told when i purchased the car that it would be safe, fine to drive, and may not even be on the recall list. it is on the list and it is not a safe vehicle as far as i am concerned. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while driving at 20 mph traveling over a pot hole the contact noticed that the vehicle had suddenly accelerated without warning. in order to stop the vehicle the brakes were applied. the failure mileage was 3,500 and the current mileage was 3,700.

Had the recall work done on my 2010 prius last week, and the problem (surge when braking over pothole, rr tracks, etc) has now happened twice since then. i just spoke to the service department at parkway toyota in englewood cliffs, who told me that, while the recall fix would lessen the "surge" problem, it would never totally go away because of the braking system itself. shouldn't this have been explained to me, by toyota inc, or parkway? this is still a very disconcerting feeling. thought the recall was a total fix, not a partial one. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact received a recall notice for recall 10v039000 (service brakes, air:antilock:control unit/module) which was performed. however, the contact stated that the problem still occurred and whenever she drove over a bump in the road or an uneven surface and depressed the brake pedal, there was a loss of braking and the vehicle would lurch forward. the vehicle had not been taken back to the dealership at the time of the complaint. the failure mileage was approximately 7,500. the current mileage was approximately 10,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the driver stated the her vehicle was recently repaired per the vehicle speed control recall. the failure continued to occur. immediately after the repair was made, she was driving 30 mph over a pothole; however, when she engaged the brake pedal, the vehicle accelerated. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 10,500 and the current mileage was 11,000.

I had a braking issue, the car would not brake after hitting several potholes and going into an intersection. this is post recall. the recall was performed by toyota three weeks ago. this is the third incident for this vehicle with identical symptoms. after coasting for 10 feet or so, the vehicle did apply the brakes. *tr

After the recall service on my 2010 toyota prius, the braking symptom still occurred on two occasions on march 2, 2010 and on march 4, 2010. in both cases there was a delay in braking when the brake was applied while on a moderately bumpy road surface. although difficult to measure the delay may have been briefer than previously, but it was still sufficient that it would have been a safety hazard if there was a vehicle or obstruction in front of me. *tr

I visited my local dealership for repair of the brake recall of the 2010 prius in early february. i do not believe that this repair has fixed the problem. a few days after the fix, my car seemed to accelerate as i was braking and happened to be going over a pot hole. then again just a few days ago, i was braking to make a turn and hit a very rough patch of road. my car again noticeably seemed to accelerate even though i was braking. *tr

Even after all recall work was performed there is an issue braking with the 2010 prius. when braking over bumpy surfaces you often get a feeling that the car is accelerating rather than braking. i do not think the car actually accelerates - it is more of an issue that the brakes releasing when i brought it to the attention of my toyota dealer they do not think it is a problem. when it happens in bumper to bumper traffic it can really scare you! i worry letting my kids drive the car. and no - it is the abs is kicking in. *kb

I have a 2010 toyota prius. when depressing the brake pedal with pressure, it goes all the way to the floor and the warning light that you are skidding illuminates. i have only tested this at traffic lights and not while moving. i had the prius in for an oil change in gastonia, nc and they said they fixed the problem but it still happens. *tr

Brakes temporarily disengage when braking. this happens several times a week. toyota says they installed the programming fix a few weeks ago but the problem continues to happen. i contacted the dealership and they told me there was nothing they could do about it, that i should contact toyota customer service. the failure occurs when i'm braking and hit a bump or uneven pavement. the brakes stop braking for just a moment. depending on my speed at the time, it can feel like a momentary pause or a sudden, heavy push from behind. it always feels like i"m sliding over the bump. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the vehicle was previously repaired under nhtsa campaign id number: 10v039000 (service brakes, air:antilock:control unit/module). after retrieving the vehicle form the authorized dealer, the vehicle would exhibit an increased stopping distance when braking from lower speeds. the failure began to recur intermittently. the failure mileage was 3,000 and the current mileage was 14,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while driving approximately 30 mph the brakes were engaged with a slow power response. the vehicle had a prior recall repair under nhtsa campaign id number 10v039000 (service brakes, air: antilock: control unit/module). the failure occurred intermittently. the failure mileage was 10,000. the current mileage was 10,600.

Tl*the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. whenever the contact attempts to brake while traveling over a rough surface the brakes will hesitate to engage increasing the stopping distance. prior to the recent failure the contact had taken her vehicle to the dealership where nhtsa recall # 10v039000 was performed on her vehicle. the current and failure mileages were 1300. updated 05/10/10 *bf updated 05/10/10*jb

We have a 2006 toyota prius. ever since we bought it, we've been experiencing a problem which was pooh-poohed by the dealer, but now we thought it best to report it. this problem manifests itself when the brake is applied and we drive over an uneven surface or a very common irregularity in the pavement....like when driving out of our driveway, which involves a small elevation grade change between the driveway and the street. the braking action changes suddenly, and the car seems to loose braking momentarily. we experience this as a lurch. this is unexpected, and we've never had a car which did this in our 40 years of driving experience. *tr

Tl*-the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact was driving approximately 45 mph. when braking there was a delay response. the failure occurred three days after the recall remedy repair was performed on the vehicle. the recall was under nhtsa campaign id number 10v039000 (service brakes, air: antilock: control unit/module). the manufacturer was notified of the malfunction and there was no resolution. the failure mileage was 11,000.

2010 prius brakes. after my first complaint and all the news on this problem i have been paying close attention and as i first thought the car does not just loose braking it actually accelerates. when braking over rough surfaces or potholes and your foot on the brake pedal you feel the car speed up for maybe one or two seconds. so far i have been able to stop ok. i quickly let off the brake pedal and reapply them and everything stops fine. i get no warning lights or alarms and never know when it might happen. stopping over the same surface the next day may not produce the same results, pretty random problem. *tr

Prius 2010 - when i brake going over pothole, there is a sudden acceleration. this happened twice since i brought the car in to the toyota dealership and they claimed they "fixed" the problem. it happened most recently today monday february 22, 2010. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact was driving approximately 7 mph on a bumpy road surface. when the brakes were engaged the vehicle surged forward. whenever traveling between 55 mph on bumpy road conditions the failure occurred intermittently. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer. the technician was unable to duplicate the failure. the vehicle had prior recall remedy associated with nhtsa campaign id number 10v039000 (service brakes, air: antilock: control unit/module). the failure occurred after the recall service repair was performed on the vehicle. the failure mileage was 11,000. the current mileage was 12,657.

I have a 2010 toyota prius with braking problems, which have continued to occur even after i took it to my toyota dealer for the recall repair on february 12, 2010. three times since then the brakes did not engage for about three seconds, when i was trying to stop, on a dry surface that was slightly uneven. this was not the sudden rapid pumping of abs brakes which i would recognize from years of use with abs equipped cars. the dealer saw no problem when i brought it back to them last week. i am worried it will cause an accident. *tr

I have a 2010 toyota prius model v with the advanced technology option including pcs (pre-collision system) system. twice in the last 6 weeks the pcs system has triggered while i have been driving. at this time i did not have the radar controlled cruise control on or engaged. both times, the seatbelts rapidly retracted the car started braking rapidly and beeping aggressively. both times after what seemed like 3-5 seconds the car returned to normal driving. both times i was driving at night at speeds between 35 and 55 mph. both times due to the rapid seatbelt/shoulder belt retraction my left arm and chest was hurt. the pain lasts about a week, so there was a serious bruise which would have been ok if there was really a crash situation. both times there was no one in front of me. once there was someone behind me who almost crashed into me because of the rapid braking. *tr

I was going down a hill (approx 20mph) in my subdivision (north on harter farms rd) when i saw a car pulling out onto the road from his yard. i applied the brakes hard for about 100yds before attempting to turn into palimino dr to avoid a collision. i did not make the turn and hit a stop sign and then the guard rail at approx 5mph. there was about 1-2" of snow on the road and i had driven up the same hill from a stop without slipping a tire just 15 min prior. i never felt any pulsation from the abs during the attempt to stop. afterwards when i got home i attempted to stop hard (to test the brakes) on level ground and again never felt the pulsation from the abs system. there was braking but i felt it was greatly reduced. i have not returned the car to toyota for their recall yet. if you wish to examine the car you may. i am sure you can duplicate the results. *tr

Tl*the contact has a 2010 toyota prius. a crash occurred when the brakes failed to stop the vehicle. the contact stated that he applied pressure to the brake pedal to no avail. the vehicle was traveling 15 mph at the time of the failure. the weather conditions were a factor and the road was covered with snow and ice at the time. the current and failure mileage was 8,000. updated 06/28/10*jb

I took my 2010 toyota prius in for the recalls and it still has the same acceleration problem. *tr

2010 prius purchased in august 2009. surge when applying brakes. occurred 4 times including 2/15/2010. has occurred in same place 3 times. each time there were potholes. when they were fixed, did not happen until they returned. complained to toyota dealer and was told this was normal when hydraulic and electronic brakes exchange. i suggested it was a dangerous normal. no damage or injury in any case. was always able to push harder on brake to stop car. stuns you when it happens because it is not normal. since first instance, have tried to keep distance when slowing and braking. *tr

When braking if my car hits a bump my brakes disengage. *tr

Tl- the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated while attempting to brake the brake did not respond he had to increase the stopping distance he experienced the failure several times, but the failure occurred intermittently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer whom performed a diagnosed, but was unable to locate a failure code the vehicle was also test driven, but the failure could not be recreated. the manufacturer was contacted and advised to take the vehicle to local dealership. the vehicle has not been repaired. the failure and the current and the current mileage were 9,999. li

2/13, the day after my car was "fixed" under the recall, my brakes failed. i was on the way to the airport, and the brakes failed . when i returned home from my trip, i brought it in to toyota kearny mesa in san diego, who found nothing wrong. my brakes failed again a week ago. i was driving on a smooth road, slowing down for a light, when suddenly the car speeded up and i went straight though the red light. no cars were nearby, so i did not crash and no one was hurt. again, toyota found nothing wrong. they tell me that they can't fix it unless they can "replicate" the problem. they want me to return the loaner car tomorrow morning and drive home with my prius and i'm scared. *tr

My issue is similar to others that have complained. when traveling a low speeds and i hit an unexpected bump the vehicle surges forward. this is very dangerous and one that i would hope toyota take notice and address immediately. *tr

Tl*the contact has 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated that while driving approximately 15 mph four times when she drove over a pothole and the brakes were applied, it felt as if the vehicle lunged forward. the brakes always functioned normally on even road surfaces vs. an uneven surface. the vin was unavailable. the failure mileage was 2500. the current mileage was 2700.

(owner of prius), i bought prius 2010 model in aug'2009 from koons arlington toyota in arlington, va, us. since then i do not have any issues up until today. when i cam out today to drive on 66 highway and also to get on to west ox road, i had recall complaints what was listed occurred to me. 1) above 60 miles speed when i was traveling and time to apply the brakes, i couldn't stop the car immediately, it took 2-3 min. to get to stop after traveling some distance though i didn't see how far i had to travel too. 2) other incident happen on same travel time on west ox road,i was approaching a traffic light near fox mill at speed around 12 - 15 miles / hour - i couldn't stop the car, it was accelerating only inspite me applying the brakes. *tr

my 2010 prius brakes failed momentarily twice while going over ruts in the road; i was able to keep control of the car and the brakes resumed working right afterwards. *tr

Prius 2010. brake problem. i was applying the brakes and the car was slowing down then as i drove over a bump the brakes stopped working and the car gained speed until the brakes worked again. this occurred a few times before. toyota has recalled prius 2010 in japan for this problem. they need to do a recall here in the us. *tr
