Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC problems on 2010 Toyota Prius

I have a 2010 toyota prius, bought in november 2009. i have noticed that if i am driving over a speed bump, pothole or even an uneven road surface and i brake, the car either accelerates or slips forward. the brakes don't work. i experienced this soon after i got the new car. yesterday, i slowed down to enter a gas station, but the road surface was driven with holes and the car did not slow down even thought i braked and it overshot the entrance. i'm nervous that i may hit someone in front of me and even worse, if i am slowing down for a pedestrian, i may hit a person. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact was driving approximately 35 mph on an uneven road surface approaching a traffic signal when the vehicle lunged forward immediately after the brake pedal was engaged. the driver had to apply excessive force to the brake pedal to stop the vehicle. the failure occurred whenever encountering an uneven road surface and potholes. the failures occurred on three separate occasions. the vehicle will be taken to an authorized dealer for inspection. the failure mileage was 1,800.

While braking my 2010 prius there are times where the car appears to surge forward. the initial braking occurs fine but near the point of coming to a complete stop (ie less than 10mph) is when the surge occurs. initially i attributed this to icy road conditions but this has now occurred on dry pavement. the dash light indicating slippage of the car does not appear when this occurs. the problems seems to occur more often within the first 5 miles of starting the car. this surge does not occur everyday nor every time the car is started. it does not seem to be strictly temperature related although it has started occurring only in the winter (car purchased in july). *tr

Under certain conditions my 2010 toyota prius momentarily looses its brakes. i took delivery in october, 2009. *tr

While braking over a rough surface such as potholes, train tracks or just rough pavement, the brakes feel like they cut out for a brief (well under a second) period. this could be abs activating or it could be the changeover from regenerative braking to friction braking or something i am not aware of. i would describe the feeling as "floating" or hitting a patch of extremely slippery ice or like my foot has slipped off the brake pedal. i am confident that this event increases stopping distance but i have no idea how much and it may only be inches. i know from reading, this has been reported years ago with the previous generation prius. overall, i am extremely pleased with the car but this is something i believe should be investigated. oh yes, it is fairly easy to reproduce and has happened to me 3-5 times in the 6000 miles i have driven the car. it is not nearly as terrifying now as it was the first time but when it happens it definitely grabs your attention! it has not caused me to get in an accident but i believe the potential is there for an accident to occur. *tr

When braking at slow speeds and on bumpy roads, the car will surge forward a bit rather than stop as expected. *tr

I purchased a 2010 toyota prius iv in november of 2009. within a week of driving the car i was making a right turn at an intersection and drove over a pot-hole. within a second of hitting the pot-hole i felt as if the car slid forward without resistance rather than feeling it being slowed by the brakes. a few seconds later the car seemed to recover and feel normal. i experienced this two more times at the same intersection when hitting the same pot-hole. i also experienced something similar weeks later on a different road. my wife reported similar experiences 3-4 times. we felt this was caused by unfamiliarity with the cars traction control system. the recent news reports on toyota braking problems is making is reconsider. *tr

Brakes are unresponsive at times, it jerks during slow and steady application of brakes on rough or slick road surfaces. *cn

Tl*the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while the contact was driving at 15 mph there was a reduction of the speed rate. the driver encountered a speed bump with pressure of the foot applied to the brake pedal. the brakes failed to engage and the vehicle began to surge forward. the vehicle continued to the destination and parked the vehicle. the failure occurred two different times. the contact is in the process of notifying the dealer. the vehicle has not been repaired. the failure mileage was 3000 and current mileage was 5000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius with electronic stability and anti-lock braking system. while braking at various speeds and driving over a pothole, a bump or any change in the road surface, the vehicle would momentarily accelerate before the brakes would engage. the dealer stated that was normal for the braking system for his year, make and model vehicle. there were no recalls. the failure mileage was 5,000 and the current mileage was 19,000.

2010 toyota prius - purchased in nov 2009. car jumps forward when applying brake. *tr

Momentary reduction in braking performance while traveling over a bump and applying the brakes. *tr

Our 2010 prius bought in october 2009 failed to stop in time and got into an accident in november 2009. we had suspected a brake issue since we bought the car but were not concerned until now that toyota has acknowledged this issue with brakes, we want toyota to fix this issue and issue a recall. *tr

1. i was driving on a local road and was switching lanes. i pressed my brake pedal very slightly as i was crossing the lane divider and as i hit one of the plastic bumps, my car accelerated forward. 2. this has recurred many times and there were no vehicles in front of me everytime it happened so i was able to come to a stop. several times i would either cross the pedestrian walkway at the intersection when this acceleration occurs. 3. i took my car to the dealer several times and everytime they told me it was normal and there was no problem. they were lying and completely clueless!!!*jb

My wife and i have both experienced rare but scary braking in our new 2010 prius. under the right conditions there is a definite lag (less that two seconds)between application of the brake pedal and when the brakes actually engage. i suspect an electronic problem is not telling the electric traction motor to shut off fast enough during these braking events, so the car is braking against its traction motor which is still pushing the car. we've attempted to pinpoint the conditions when this unusual braking behavior occurs and here is our best description: 1. happens when one front wheel hits a slick spot like a wet manhole cover or storm grate during braking and the abs cuts in 2. it happens during braking on very bumpy roads especially in tight corners where traction may be lost momentarily on braking causing the abs system to cut in. 3. it happens at relatively low speeds below 25mpg and when the accelerator in not pressed and usually when the traction motor is running. we drive two other cars (non-hybrid)over the same roads in similar conditions and don't experience these braking anomalies. the toyota dealer can't identify a problem. *tr

2010 toyota prius purchased in october 2009. when braking, car hits a bump in the road or on a rough road, brakes appear to fail for approximately 2-3 seconds. *tr

My 2010 prius v has very jerky brakes sometimes when starting out. causes all people in car to be jerked around. many other prius 2010 owners report same problem. toyota denies knowing about problem in spite of many complaints! *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated that when driving various speeds and trying to depress the brake pedal, she noticed that the brakes failed to respond. she would apply pressure to the brake pedal and they would lock for a few seconds. she noticed that the failure occurred 5 to 6 times. she took the vehicle to the dealer and they were unable to duplicate or diagnose the failure. the dealer also stated that the vehicle was designed to have the braking system lock for 3 seconds when they are engaged forcefully; afterwards the driver had press the pedal again to release the locked position. she had not spoken with the manufacturer to-date. the vehicle had not been repaired when the complaint was filed. the current mileage was approximately 4,600. the failure mileage was approximately 1,500.

The roads were covered with snow and were quite slippery. i was coming down a hill to a stop sign at about 10 mph. i hit the brakes lightly, the abs engaged (i could hear/feel the brakes pulse), but the car didn't slow down much. i jammed on the brakes, the abs was still engaged and the car finally stopped in the middle of the intersection, again slowing down very slowly. if it had not been a four-way stop, somebody would have hit me! i kept driving and the same thing kept happening to me: i hit the brakes, the abs engaged and the car stopped very slowly. in some cases, it felt like the car even accelerated a little bit before finally (and slowly) coming to a stop. i am a mechanical engineer and used to work for general motors - i have driven lots of cars - and this has never happened to me before. i immediately drove home and drove my 2002 honda civic (which does not have anti-lock brakes) down the same road. while the car did slide in the snow, it stopped in about one-third the distance of my prius. there is definitely something the matter with the braking system and/or the traction control system when the abs engages. *tr

I experience a loss of brakes at least two or three times a day with my 2010 prius. this happens everytime i press on the brake and hit a bump in the road. i live in new orleans and our roads are notoriously bumpy so i loose my brakes often. this has been happening since i purchased the vehicle back in november. the dealer refused to do anthing about it, saying that it was acting how it was designed. i have never owned a vehicle that looses it brakes when the car hits a bump. *cn

Brake failure while going over speed bumps. sometimes on flat surfaces. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. she stated that while driving at 30 mph she drove over a bump on the road. while having her foot on the brake the vehicle surged forward, a few seconds later the brakes engaged. this issue has occurred 5 additional times. the vehicle has not been diagnosed and no repairs had been done at the time of the complaint. the failure mileage was 1000 and current mileage was 35000.

I purchased a 2010 toyota prius in sept 2009. since then, i have had 3 or 4 instances where the brakes let go momentarily as mounting reports are similarly describing. each instance has occurred at roughly the same place on my drive home from my child's day care, where the road is slightly uneven and sloping down, as i am breaking for a stop sign. since this is a residential area, i am not driving fast to begin with (<20 mph), and the brakes only let go for 1-2 seconds. prior to hearing all of these other reports, i had not thought to file my own and for that i apologize. my feeling is that unless this issue is corrected somehow by toyota, these instances will continue, and i do see potential for an accident. *tr

On three occasions, my 2010 prius "leapt forward" when i drove over a man-hole cover. i have read the description of the braking issue on the 2010 prius and it sounds exactly like my experience. it only lasts for a fraction of a second, but it is quite frightening when it happens. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while the contact was driving 20mph the contact attempted to brake and noticed that the brakes would not engage for a short period. the vehicle was taken to the dealership where the contact was informed that the failure could not be reproduced. there were no prior warnings and the current and failure mileages were 5000.

As i was going downhill, the road surface was uneven. i attempted to apply the brakes. the pedal went almost to the floor as if there was no brake fluid. the car continued to go forward as the brakes did not engage. as i pushed the brake pedal further, the brakes engaged. *jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. whenever the contact attempts to brake traveling over a rough terrain at a low speed the contact noticed that the brakes will suddenly disengage and then correct itself. the vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealership and there were no prior warnings. the current and failure mileages were 5600.

When our 2010 prius hits a pothole and i brake, it lunges forward for a second. this has happened 3 times. *tr

My 2010 toyota prius, has on at least five occasions, surged forward when i hit the brakes, especially coming off of cruise control heading to a highway off ramp. these have occurred between september 1 and the present, february 2. the car surges forward even though i am not accelerating and have in fact hit the brakes. i then hit the brakes harder and the car has slowed. *tr

I have had the following occur several times since i purchased the vehicle in july 2009: when braking on snow or ice or braking when passing over a bump or pothole the brakes will feel as if they are slipping and the car will accelerate for a fraction of a second. it's as if the abs is releasing the brakes too long before reengaging them, resulting in the car to stop decelerating momentarily. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the contact stated that the brakes failed when driving over uneven pavement at low speeds. the contact also stated the vehicle lurched forward when braking under normal road conditions. the failure happens when driving over a speed bump or a pot hole. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was told to remove the floor mats but the problem persisted.the contact stated that the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure because it happens randomly . the manufacturer was contacted but the contact did not receive an acceptable answer from them. the failure mileage was 8,362.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. while the contact was driving 30mph traveling over a rough terrain he attempted to brake and noticed that the vehicle suddenly surged forward before the brakes would activate. the vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealership and there were no prior warnings. the current and failure mileages were 1500.

Brake problem when on uneven surface or hill, sometimes turning. car hydroplanes and brakes do not work. has happened at least a dozen times since buying the car last august. three times have come close to hitting another car. reported problem to dealership. waiting to hear back. *tr

Toyota prius 2010 model: brake lag. i gather nhtsa is considering a recall. this is to further your data. i took my 2010 prius in to 355 toyota, rockville, in november to complain about the brakes disengaging when being applied over rough terrain, leading to a 4 - 6 foot jump forward then re-engagement of the brakes. i lodged this concern as part of getting an oil change service, and i have this complaint in writing on the docket. they told me the problem was just normal antilock braking. the problem has occurred multiple times since, causing about a 4 - 6 foot jump before the brake reengages. with all the ice we have had recently, i can now assure myself that this issue is not about the antilock brakes, which have a totally different feel, as they should. the brake disengagement almost caused an accident on monday this week on e street as the car hit an ice patch and the brake disengaged momentarily. i think the prius is a great car, but, this problem is dangerous and needs to be fixed. when i called 355 toyota yesterday when it became evident that i wasn't the only person reporting this, they were very nice but i am not sure that toyota has provided them with a solution. *tr

My wife's 2010 prius occasionally surges forward when the brakes are applied. this typically occurs when driving down hill and over bumps. it happens about 1 time per 14 days. the surge is only for a split second. control of the car has not been lost yet. nothing has been done to fix the problem

I was unable to slow down going into an intersection at a reasonable rate of speed. while i was not accelerating, when i applied the brakes the car did not slow down as i would have expected. this same behavior has occurred in the past several months since i've owned the prius 2010 model. it seems to skip forward or accelerate while braking on a downhill or uneven surface. by the time i was able to stop i the airbags had gone off and i had hurt my neck and back. it is a new vehicle that now has almost $14,000 damage and won't be fixed for a month. if anything, i'm an overly cautious driver and wondering what i could have done to avoid the accident. *tr

Three separate occasions of momentary loss of braking going over rough surface (two different locations) on dry asphalt. each time the braking resumed after a short moment, as the brake pedal was kept pressed. when the brakes went out, it felt as if the car started lurching forward, causing momentary panic with the driver and the passengers. luckily there was still time to get to a complete stop before impact. *tr

2010 toyota prius i've had at least 2 experiences where under hard braking and transitioning to different levels in road surface, the vehicle has lurched forward. when this occurred, each time, i thought i had been hit in the rear causing my vehicle to be pushed forward. i blogged other owners, and have been trying to get an answer for a few months. i saw the recent news on prius brakes and feel this is what's happening with my 2010 prius.*jb

2010 prius acceleration surge - when i drive over a sewer cover or any similar indentations in the roadway the vehicle surges forward in an aggressive manner. i need to apply the brakes or steer to avoid any object in the path of the vehicle. it is very unsettling and dangerous since the surge is strong and unpredictable. *tr

On nov. 3, 2009, i purchased a prius iv 2010. on nov. 10 coming to red light on a dry road. brakes gently applied. right front tire hit a bump in road. car slightly accelerated before brakes kicked in. it has happened a few more times since then. in each case, the road was drive. every time when brakes are applied and car then rolls over a bump or hole in pavement this acceleration occurs. last time was on dec. 15. east houston in nyc. coming to a light. brakes applied. car was almost at a full stop. tires touched on good sized flaw in the pavement and the car slightly sped up. i was really fearful that time the prius was going to hit the car in front. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2010 toyota prius. the vehicle accelerated immediately after the contact drove approximately 45 mph over a bump in the road or a pothole. the contact was able to control the vehicle when the failure occurred. the failure mileage was 1500. the current mileage was 4000.

Vehicle surges forward when braking over road surface that is not smooth. symptom makes safely judging stopping distance very difficult, and in our opinion, increases likelihood of an accident. toyota dealer claimed they could not replicate issue and that vehicle's computer did not report/record any problems. we can replicate issue over same bump everyday. *tr

I own a 2010 toyota prius. when i apply the brakes, the car jerks forward before stopping. i am very concerned about the software problem in the abs system and want the nhtsa to demand that toyota fix the 2010 prius brakes. the problem with the jerking brakes happens frequently, and has happened at least 40 times over the past 4 months. *tr

Tl* the contact has a 2010 prius. the vehicle is having a brake failure when going over bump or uneven pavement. the contact stated that this happens regardless of weather conditions. the vehicle almost hit another vehicle when going around a curve and hit a bump. the vehicle then seem to start to slide. the failure mileage was 5000. the vehicle current mileage was 15858.

Our 2010 prius has a problem with the brakes when going over bumpy roads. *tr

Braking moderately, going over buckled asphalt and or tar strips in the pavement. i have had it happen at least three times, prius feels out of control then i regain control, wet or dry pavement. its a brand 2010 toyota prius with 5,000 miles. *tr

I was going down a fairly steep hill, applying my brakes evenly as i approached a stop light. there were no cars in front of me, and the road was dry. suddenly, i thought that i had been struck from behind because my car lurched forward (as though i had been struck). my 2010 prius was only about two months old at this point. the brakes re-engaged after a second or two, but i was afraid that i would have hit someone if i hadn't been alone on the road. the same thing happened when going down another steep road about three weeks later. again, there was no property damage and no one was hurt. but i was startled. i do not know if the road was uneven or if there were potholes. i have not reported these incidents to the dealer, the car company or the police because (although they scared me), i did not think much about them. now that i know that others have experienced this, i have become fairly worried. *jb

I couldn't stop my 2010 prius at a stop. the brakes wouldn't stop the vehicle.*tr

I bought a 2010 prius v on 10-31-09. on several occasions, i have experienced the temporary loss of braking now making news. i've noticed it at least a half dozen times on snowy or icy roads. mistakenly attributing the zero slowing to being on black ice, i pumped the brakes. the brakes immediately took effect and slowed the car. the immediate response upon pumping the brakes, plus the number of times this has happened in just the handful of times i've driven on slick roads, tells me it wasn't black ice at all. please do something about this. thanks. *tr
