We have classified the 965 complaints from 2007 Toyota Prius about EXTERIOR LIGHTING into the following categories.
My right headlight intermittently started to flickered off. this issue has not gone away since it started. had husband check to see if there was a loose connection. no loose connections. went online to see if there were other prius owners who had the same problem, and there are others with exactly the same issues! there seems to be no remedy for this problem except to turn the light onto the off position then turn them on again. they do go back on but can shut off or wink off at any time. this is a hazard for nighttime driving, and my concern is that my twin teenagers will be using the car at night for work, errands, etc. *tr
Drivers side hid headlight in my 2007 toyota prius went out twice in 5 minutes while driving. i was able to resolve the issue both times by turning the lights completely off and back on. the first time the light went out, a driver next to me notified me as i was getting on the interstate. i pulled the car over on the interstate, turned the lights off and back on, which resolved the issue. the second time the drivers side light went out was when i was driving down the dark interstate at night at approx. 60 mph. this was within 5 minutes of the first incident. *tr
The front headlight started going on and off periodically while driving, we went on a trip to hungary and the light started acting up. we have taken it to two toyota dealerships within germany with no resolution but expensive bills due to the mechanics hooking it up to computer systems to diagnose the problem. this is causing us safety issues while driving especially on not clear days due to the early morning fog. i have consulted with my brother's body shop to see if there has been any recalls or defects on the lights, nothing. i am taking it again this week to the toyota shop in mannheim germany. this problem has not been resolved since feb 2012. i would appreciate some resolution to this problem before the lights cause us an accident. i have had the two front headlight bulbs replaced which are not inexpensive. thank you if you need to contact me do it via email, this is my parents phone number in pa, i cannot type in my number in germany. Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota prius. the contact stated that the driver was traveling 40 mph when the headlights failed to illuminate. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 68,000 and the current mileage was 68,500.
The headlights of my prius are hid and at 60,000 the right light intermittently began turning off randomly and now both are doing it in the matter of a month. at times both headlights will be completely out and it requires you to turn the lights off and back on to get them to work. a definite safety hazard. both lights are now turning off several times in a 30 minute period. *tr
One vehicle headlight keeps going out but when you turn the lights off at the switch, then back on the light comes on again. the dealer changed the bulb despite us telling them the light comes on if you turn the switch off and back on. we had the connector checked and cleaned to no avail. i did a little research and it turns out that many other prius owners are experiencing the same problems. this is a safety issue that is very expensive to troubleshoot and fix. *tr
1. the right-front headlight often goes out after the car has been driven for a while. (fortunately, both headlights don't haven't out yet!) this really should be considered a safety issue - why isn't there a recall? 2. the back-up camera often stops working for a few days at a time. this is a problem, given the very poor visibility the mirrors have behind this car. *tr
My vehicle seemed to be having a recurrent problems with headlights. initially it started with randomly turning off . i tried to get this investigated by the dealership but was told that these are sometimes driven by weather conditions and could happen. however later on i happen to understand that there was a hid recall. unfortunately i never received the letter nor toyota dealership did their due diligence by validating active recalls and taking care of this for me. i am deeply disappointed with toyota and the dealership both for their laxity in being responsible as toyota to take care of this for a customer . as i never received the letter i never got an opportunity to respond to the campaign for the hid issue with toyota prius 2006 - 2009 models. *tr
Head lights went out at night. had them replaced at aaa repair shop in san jose,ca. cost $300. toyota wanted $600.00. then they went out at night again on dec 2010 replace again in susanville,ca. cost$300.00. then toyota came out with recall notice with a written report to replace lights and power unit all at once. then they just went out again dec 2011. do not know cost yet. no accidents from these outages but there could have been. they went out at night not at the same time but could have. this time only the driver side went out. it comes on then goes out then comes on again only for about 30 seconds. i think there is trouble with the power unit or bad design. *tr
My left headlight keeps going off and then back on. sometimes hitting a bump on the road causes it to turn off/on. other times i can manually turn the headlights off and it will come back on. several times, we have tried to get it back on, and no positive results. this happens several times a day. originally i thought it was a bulb but when i took it in, bulb was fine. wires are not loose. i see numerous complaints about this and see that toyota has not done a recall on this. i have young children and it makes me extremely nervous because i fear that this will happen to the other headlight at night. *tt
The headlights turn off while driving. sometimes one , other times both. if i switch them off-on fast they come back on. so it's not a bulb. toyota speculates that it could be a computer issue for each bulb and could cost over $700 each to fix. this is a very dangerous situation , we have a lot of joggers & kids on bikes in our area. if one light is out i don't always know & then i am now able to see their reflective material. please issue the recall before someone get killed. thank you *tr
No one injured. minor problem, but toyota refuses suggestions "for legal reasons", so i have to report it to you, and hope that you will relay to toyota. good car, good dash lighting system, nice rheostat to dim the instrument panel lights at night, to assist in night road visibility. the problem is that as you dim the instrument panel lights, the lighted symbol for the emergency flasher light switch goes completely dark before the instrument panel lights do. so, on a dark night, you dim the lights to make the instrument panel lights just bright enough to read, without excess reflection or distraction, and the emergency flasher switch becomes invisible because its light went completely out before the other instrument panel lights did. this increases distraction and reduces reaction time when you need to find and turn on the emergency flasher light switch. i doubt this problem is limited to just my car. the simple solution (everything seems simple to the guy not doing the work) would be to design and wire the dash panel lights so that the emergency flasher switch light stays a little brighter than all the other lights, as they all dim. that way, the switch you might most need in a hurry will be visible, even if you have dimmed your instrument panel lights. quicker turn-on of the emergency flasher alerts following drivers sooner, increasing their safety, and mine. thanks for working to keep us all safer on the road, and to improve the vehicles we drive. *tr
Left headlight started just going off completely at nite, now both are going off while driving. checking online, it seems that many other toyota owners have had same problem, and one of the vendors of headlights for toyotas manufactured defective headlights. thus not all toyotas have the prob, just the ones with this vendor's headlights. but it still shows many do have the bad headlights. toyota is not standing behind this issue and repairing the defective ones as they should. it is a very expensive...almost 2000 dollars to replace the computer controllers and headlights. *tr

Passenger headlight went out while driving. when i went to replace it the next day, the light was working. today (dec 30, 2011) problem occurred again. *kb
Front left hid headlight failed completely, resulting in unsafe driving situation. please urge toyota to recall the headlights on this vehicle. thank you. *tr
While driving the headlights will shut off. sometimes the drivers side would go out. sometimes the passenger side would go out. sometimes both headlights will go out. if you turn off the headlights and turn them back on they will work for various amounts of time. dealer mechanic states this is an extremly common occurance with this vehicle. repair cost was quoted at approx $600 to replace the headlights and that possibly this could not fix the problem and could need further repairs but this is where they start with this known issue. *js
One head light would go out when driving. turing the lights on and off brings both lights back on. sometimes the left goes out and sometimes the right. *tr
Headlights failed. lights went completely out (both sides) while on high beams while driving on a rural windy road. i could have been killed! i had to pull over when they went out and i was driving on a rural windy road with lots of deer. i called my husband and he had me turn on my fog lamps to get home. my lights then only worked on low beams, but then with in a few days the passenger low beam goes out after about 5-10 of operation. now both, on low beams are going out after 5-10 minutes of operation - high beams do not work at all. took to dealership, told me it is the hid lights and would cost over $300 to change both. this is insane!!!!! your agency knows this is a safety problem and has decided to let big corp get away with robbing us. you are just as bad as toyota for letting them knowingly get away with this and not even warning us owners about this happening. in addition, my rear drivers side tail light is now out and i was pulled over for a fix it ticket. something is seriously wrong with the prius and you are covering it up. *tr
Left front headlight went out then 4 months later the right front headlight went out. i can make them work again by toggling the on/off switch. there has been many times that both lights went out at the same time. i looked at the bulbs and they are fine its the light module that is defective and needs to be replaced which is about 600 plus for both. kind of find this hard to get fixed so i have been dealing with this light issue for some time now. they should just take responsibility for a poorly designed module and replace them! since they did not stand by there product i went out and bought a ford edge instead of a toyota highlander. *tr
My lheadlights flicker, and go out all the time...i have 2 teen daughters that are of driving age and they cannot drive at night due to the lighting issue...i have been on the freeway going upwards of 75 mile per hour on highway and both headlights have went completely out...i assumed toyota was a good brand it is soo dangerous to drive my car at night!! *tr
Headlights randomly goes out while driving. when headlights out, interior lights (lighting of dashboard, etc.) continue. if you turn lights off, then on again, headlights work. does not happen every time. *kb
Headlights fail intermittently, without notice. dealer has replaced one, the opposite side is also failing. *tr
It was last friday evening, sep 16,2011,when my car had around 51270 miles,i discovered that the hid bulbs in prius is going off while driving, sometimes first on the passenger side and some times on driver, and after sometime it could go off on both sides.i am less than 5 years in my car.after doing research in the internet,i came to know about toyota hid bulb head light problems, experienced by other prius owners, and the class action law suit regarding this, and the fact that the toyota has extended the warranty till 5 yr/50k miles. i mostly use the car during the day time to work(8 miles one way),and since all my friends/amenities/shopping are with in 5 mile radius,i dont get much chance to drive for a longer time during the night.all my night drives are rare and is mostly less than 10-15 mins.i also have fog lights in my car which gives some decent light, and when there are other cars in the road,or when the road is well lit,it is almost impossible to diagnose this problem, when the first headlight goes off.even when the second headlight goes off, under good road conditions,it is very difficult. it appears as some light dimming going on from inside the car, when only one head light goes off.further i did my 50k miles service less than a month ago. i called toyota, opened a case(number:1109191158)and took the car to the dealer.the dealer diagnosed it and confirmed that it was due to hid bulbs, covered by the class action settlement.he also updated my case with toyota.the toyota agreed to cover the cost of the bulb but not the labor.i tried to escalate the situation with toyota, but they were firm on their decision.they were more talking by the rule book, about the expiration of warranty, than trying to help me with my problem.clearly they have defective part, and they were unwilling to cover the complete cost. it would only be fair,if they refund the $112 labor cost. *tr
I have a 2007 toyota prius that i am having hid headlight issues. the passenger headlamp will go off at anytime and only come back on if you turn the light switch off then back on. i need help on this problem seeing as slot of prius owners are having the same problem. *tr
While driving to work one headlight went out and stayed out until i stopped the car turned off the lights and then turned them back on. this went on for a week and we took the car into toyota dealership where the replaced the bulbs at no charge cause we were under warranty. however, this problem has continued to happen over the last 80000 miles. now we are seeing both headlights go out at the same time and or one or the other. we are tired of purchasing new headlights over and over again. . *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota prius. the contact stated that the headlights failed to operate sporadically. the contact replaced the light bulbs on numerous occasions but the failure persisted. the dealer was unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was not notified of the issue. the approximate failure mileage was 45,000.
My 2007 toyota prius headlights keep burning out at random and much faster than any headlight should, and have also done so while i'm driving. my first headlight burned out on the passenger side last october, which to me seemed normal, the car was then 5 years old. i bought and replaced the headlight the next day. since october 2011 to present day (9 months) i have now had to replace both passenger side and driver side headlights 7 times combined. i have tried numerous different brands of lights, and also had a dealership check out my wiring to be sure there were no shorts or anything wrong with the setup, and they concluded there was none. the lights go out at completely random intervals, on 2 occasions the light went out while i was driving. as both passenger and driver side lights are going out this is a clear safety issue because while they have not yet gone out simultaneously, the timings are so often and random that i fear they will both go out before i am able to replace the one that is out. as i have used every brand of light that is available, and had a toyota dealer confirm there is nothing wrong with how i installed the lights or the wiring, its very clear there is some kind of issue with the prius lighting system itself causing the lights to go out. *tr
2007 prius headlight failure - passenger side headlight goes out frequently. by turning lights off and back on it stays on for a while. i can't reproduce the problem when i want to. looking at consumer complaints it seems to be a wide spread problem and very expensive to replace bulb which doesn't help the problem. major safety issue at least that toyota is just brushing aside. i am not a satisfied toyota customer by all means. *tt
My 2007 toyota prius headlights keep going out. some light manufacturers tell me that this car is the problem, not the bulbs. i had the first set of bulbs replaced with some other work at about 20k miles. the next set was replaced at about 60k miles 2 yrs later. now they are out again at 76k and 14 months later. toyota issued a recall for a refund, but the first one was covered under insurance, these next two aren't, yet it appears that i'm going to have to replace these bulbs every 1 - 2 years, which is absurd. they just go out, no flickering or dimming, but just go out with no notice. toyota should have to recall this issue, make these cars safe, and make it so the bulbs don't have to be replaced every year or two. *tr
My 2007 toyota prius hid left/right lights goes off intermittently when driving!! sometimes both of them go out at the same time, it is so dangerous. i contacted the toyota dealer and they want $300 to replace head lamps, but do not guarantee that it will fix the issue. last night i was stopped by police because my driver side head lamps was out, but i had turn off, then on the lights, and it was back on. i believed this is a well known issue with the toyota prius and toyota should do the right thing and fixed it. i hope that toyota does not wait for a major accident to do the right thing. *tr
Low beam headlights burning out consistently after a very short time. last one only lasted about 3 weeks. *tr
Hid headlights turn off without warning while driving. then if you turn them off and turn them on again, they'll come on again (sometimes dimly) and then turn off. sometimes the left one goes out. sometimes the right one goes out. sometimes both go out. *tr
Hid headlights go off at random times. the passengers side was first to start ,now the driver side as well as both go off. the problem is occurring more frequently. when you switch the headlights from off to on they turn on. the vehicle has 100k miles. no warranty, dealers repair cost is approximately $550.00. i am shocked when i google my problem to see how many people are affected and more so the class action law suits that are there. this is far more than a burnt light bulb,it has to be looked into. i am a loyal toyota customer of 31 years. please help! i'm worried about the safety for my wife driving at night. *tr
Headlights are intermittent on both sides. major safety issue. i have replaced the bulbs twice in less than a year and the issue still persists. it isn't the bulb the headlights are defective. *tr
Both 2007 prius headlights fail at once leaving me in dark while driving. many other complaints from prius owners. go back on when switched off then on. intermittent electrical defect. not qualify for. class action. 60,000 mi. requesting reopen investigation. for recall. urgent safety matter. *tr
Headlights for 2007 toyota prius hybrid 4dr keep going out; the dealers are charging up to $800 to change the bad headlights. i have replaced three drivers side headlights and now the passenger side go out. this is safety concerns as washington state poor driving conditions with rain and seasonal snow, early night fall. *tr
Toyota prius headlights intermittently working. *tt
Failure of toyota prius hid headlamps, left me "driving in the dark." *tr
One or the other headlight will go out randomly while driving down the road at night. the only way to get the headlight to go back on is to turn the headlights off using the head lamp switch on the drivers steering column by turning it off and on quickly while driving. this head light going out safety issue will occur to either headlight at any moment, but seems to alternate between them. have not lost both head lights at the same time yet. this loss of head lights will continue to occur every 2 -3 minutes. this is a safety issue and the distraction makes it hard to watch ahead on the road for any obstacles or to watch for wildlife ahead and makes it hard to see anything at a safe distance. *tr
After 20k miles the headlights need to be replaced at a cost of over $600.00. headlights intermittently go out and come back on. sometimes passenger side only, sometimes both lights dim then come back up. turning the headlights on and off seems to correct the issue. *kb
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota prius. the contact stated that the passenger side headlight failed. the passenger side headlight would fail intermittently. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostics or repairs. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
2007 toyota prius touring edition hid headlights turn off randomly while driving with the headlights on. i turn off the headlights and turn them back on and they come back on for a variable time before going off again. *tt
Passenger headlamp went out after approximately 30,000 miles. replaced it along with driver side bulb. now both sides are out (low beams only) as well as passenger side taillight. all other lights are working fine. the fuses are intact. turning off and on hasn't helped. car still has just over 45,000 miles. *tr
Right side headlight turns off when lights are on. will turn back on when lights are turn off and back on. replaced light with new bulb but did not solve problem. *tr
Approximately one week after having my battery replaced by a toyota dealership in temecula, ca the digital display on my dashboard stopped working and no longer displayed my speed, gas tank gauge, trip mileage or total mileage. after another week or so passed, the display, or cluster display, as it is listed on a toyota repair estimate from november 3, 2011, would work intermittently by again displaying my speed, gas tank gauge, etc. the display would sometimes work for a few hours and then stop working, and not work again for several days or a week or more. currently, it the display continues to work intermittently only, causing me to drive for days or a week or more with no visual display of how fast i am driving or how much gas i have remaining in my tank. this failure of the cluster display is a hazard to me and especially to my young teenage daughter because we do not know for sure how fast we are driving or how much gas we have remaining at any given time when the display stops working. i had my vehicle inspected by the toyota dealership in temecula, ca and they recommended replacing the combo meter since they believe there is an open circuit in the combo meter, but they could not guarantee that their recommendation would resolve the problem. they then advised me that a service bulletin was issued for problems with the cluster display, but no recall has been ordered and they could not cover the cost of fixing the problem under warranty. i then called toyota corporate offices at 800-331-4331and spoke to the service director, who offered me a 40% discount on the cost of replacing the combo meter on a reimbursement basis and said if a recall was ordered i would get a full refund. i believe the problem on my toyota prius of an intermittently functioning cluster display presents a significant hazard for the reasons stated above and warrants a recall.
Two years ago the hid headlights in my 2007 prius began to fail intermittently. first it was the driver side light only. i found that if i turned the light off and on again the light would work. more recently, both lights began failing. recently i was on a curvy back road. both lights failed. everything went totally black. i managed to turn the lights off and on again and swerve just in time to avoid an accident. i had both lights replaced by toyota at my own expense since i had more than 50,000 miles on the vehicle. i called toyota and told them about the incident and that it should be handled as a safety recall before someone is seriously injured or killed. *tr
Headlamps turn off on their own intermittently. the left light will go off more than the right. i usually correct the situation by turning off the lights then back on. this problem has increased in frequency. i read in an online forum (priuschat) that this is a common problem. *tr
This is a known problem. my headlights fail randomly left, right, or both. if i turn off the light switch then turn it back on the lights will come back. i believe toyota should acknowledge this as a design problem and fix it. this can cause a dangerous situation at night.
Purchased the car used and immediately noticed that the passenger side headlight would go out intermittently with no warning or apparent reason. turning the lights off and back on would bring both lights back on. now - a year later - the same thing is happening with both headlights. very scary. have been advised by a toyota dealer that the problem is bulb burnout. how can that be when they come on initially and work intermittently??? the cost to replace both bulbs is $527! this is a serious safety concern. can't afford a fix. what to do?? *tr
