We have classified the 965 complaints from 2007 Toyota Prius about EXTERIOR LIGHTING into the following categories.
Hid lights going off while driving. one light intermittently going on and off. turning light switch off and then on again turns them back on. have seen online numerous reports of this probel
For a few months, the left hand side front headlight has gone out, if i turn the lights off and then back on again, it comes back on. however last night, while driving on a dark nc highway both lights went out. they came back on when i turned the lights on an off again. this happened two more times. it is clearly a safety issue that i see many other prius owners experience. it is entirely possible both lights have been going out for some time, since driving on dark country highways at 70 mph is not something i regularly do.
Headlights intermittently fail. sometimes one headlight will go out and other times both. so far, if i detect one or both headlights are out, turning the headlight switch off and back on will correct the problem. depending on street lighting, i am not always able to detect if the headlights are off until another car flashes to let me know or i enter a dark roadway where it becomes obvious.
Similar to this complaint (nhtsa id number:11268053) i have been struggling to keep both of my headlights working for over a year now. i have tried replacing the lightbulbs and the ballasts without success. both the regular lights and the high beams turn off about every couple of minutes and sometimes faster. i drive with one hand on the switch and constantly turn them off then back on in order to get where i am going. please help! i am intending to go to the toyota dealer but it is expensive and i believe this is a flaw in the vehicle. this problem occurs regardless of whether the car is in motion or not.
One headlight on my car keeps shutting off, while the other is fine. i am able to "fix" the issue by turning my headlights off and then turning them on again. dealers initially told me it was because the bulb burned out, but i replaced both at the same time, and it's always the driver's side bulb that "burns out." upon further review on public forums, it appears the bulb is perfectly fine and there's some type of electrical issue/connection problem that causes problems with the bulb. this happens when the vehicle is on and in-motion on any street.
Headlights turn off on their own while driving at night. very dangerous !!!
Headlights go off without warning while driving at night. very dangerous!!
One headlight turns off randomly. every now and again turning the lights off and on again will fix the problem, but when you're driving 70mph down a dark highway you don't want to have to keep your fingers crossed that the lights will come back on.
Sporadically, the lights on the dashboard will not light up. when this happen the backup camera will not display as well. this doesn't happen often, but when it happens, it is a while before the they will display.
Takata recall 1. driving on surface street at approx. 45 mph attempting to slow down for an intersection all the brake warning lights came on, while i was applying the brakes they had failed, eventually the vehicle came to a stop. after that incident the brakes are working normal. apparently there was a recall to address the issue and it is no longer valid, i was never notified of the recall and the dealership that i purchased the vehicle from (used) never notified me of any recalls. i am a toyota owner with a defected vehicle (a known defect by the manufacture). what are my options? 2. the headlamps (left) intermittently goes out, i have replaced the lamp, checked the fuses and it still happens, others have described loosing both lamps. both issues above are safety issues that can contribute to serious injury incidents. these safety issue needs to be addressed by toyota.
Every day the headlights go out randomly at night. very dangerous.
My headlight consistently flickers on and off. i have changed my bulb, but it continues to turn off at times. from my research online, it looks like the 2007-2009 prius models were recalled due to faulty headlights.
Headlights flicker and go out even after replacing the right headlight that seems to be the problem. not safe to be going d down road and headlights go.out completely. .it has been happening for.nearly 6.months. had headlight replaced 3 months ago.
Headlights constantly going out while driving. i do not operate the lights in daytime. it's a major flaw and problem with this 2006-2009 model and a safety hazard. not to mention i am almost always subject to police issues tickets and fines. i have replaced my bulbs countless times. the lights go out while stationary and in motion. always one at a time.
Front headlight (both) sometimes all lights will go off. most of the time it is one or the other but i have had it happen where both completely turn off while driving. on the freeway!!! this happens daily and ive even been pulled over more than 3 times due to me not knowing about a light out! turning on and off the lights is only a temporary fix!
While driving (in motion), one headlight (either right or left) will suddenly go off. if i turn both lights off and back on, they will both come back on. but one or the other might go off again soon afterwards. it sometimes happens on short trips (a few blocks) and sometimes only after driving several miles. it happens on neighborhood streets and on the highway, while going straight. sometimes it happens after a noticeable bump in the road, but other times it happens when the road is smooth. it happens at slow speed (<30 mph), medium, or highway speed.
Both front headlights frequently turn off at the same time while driving. turning the lights off then on fixes the issue temporarily, until it happens again a short time later. this happens multiple times per hour.
I was driving my 2007 toyota prius in the middle of the night and all of the sudden all of my lights went out. i was in the middle of a busy road and could not see anything and decide to just pull off the road and hope not to hit anything because i just wanted to get off the road before i got hit by an oncoming car. after i got off the road for awhile i tried the lights and they both worked. i took my prius to a state college, pa dealership and they charged me $450.00 because they said both headlights were out. the next day after i picked my prius from the toyota dealership i went to a grocery store after work and the car would not turn off and the whole dashboard was black.. i called the dealership and said they must have created a short in my car and they said bring it back in. the next day they told me the whole cluster system that controls the dashboard was bad and they would be charging another $680.00.
Left front headlight consistently flickers out 5-10 minutes after being turned on. can sometimes be reignited by toggling lights, but then turns off again.
Headlights turn off. generally one at a time, normally the drivers side but sometimes it is both headlights. this happens each time i drive with my headlights on. i drive at night with the headlights on at a minimum of 6 days a week because of work or school.
Headlights are intermittent. sometimes left, sometimes right, sometimes both will turn off. so far, turning the the switch off then back on cures the problem, but only temporarily.
Headlights flicker then will shut off completelywhile driving down highway.. no dash lights. have to turn car off and on
Problem with headlights going off started several months ago, but now it's a daily occurrence and happens in the dark! today it happened twice. so far i've been able to turn them off and on again and they work, but pretty scary when on an expressway. really surprised toyota doesn't take care of this as it's definitely a safety issue and they've known about it early on. death or injury is sure to occur. i will definitely be contacting toyota on monday knowing so many others have this issue, too!
The passenger side headlight goes out intermittently. turning off the lights and then back on will turn the light back on, sometimes. dealer's repair shop stated hid lightbulb was bad and replaced it. it did not fix the problem. based on other postings, this is a fairly common issue.
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota prius. while driving 35 mph, the driver's side headlight flickered. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the contact also mentioned that the headlights had to be manually turned off and on to function normally. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the contact was informed that the headlights needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure persisted. the manufacturer and dealer were not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was unknown.
I bought this 2007 toyota prius used and was not informed by the seller that there was a problem with the hid headlamps. while driving, the right headlamp will periodically flicker and/or cut out. turning off then on the headlights resets it to be on. after researching the problme online, i discovered that this is a known issue with toyota and that there was a class action lawsuit. replacing the bulbs for this model are very expensive and this problem should not be occurring. i would like to know how to get this problem resolved. thank you!
Headlights go off intermittently while driving at night
While driving in city or highway the headlights go out suddenly. turning lights off then on again turns headlights back on. this is extremely dangerous driving at night or on dark roads.
Headlights (low-beam) turned off randomly while driving at night. flicking light switch off and back on usually turned lights back on. flicking on brights and then back to low didn't help.
Hid headlights go off while driving. turning off and back on will restart for a bit. sometimes they are dim or flicker before going off. i have changed the ballast and bulbs for both sides multiple times over the past 5 years without a permanent repair. had all work redone with new toyota parts on 11/29 and they are not working again on 12/1. apparently this is a known defect with this model and toyota extended the warranty but that is long since past. the vehicle is unusable after dark as they are now both going off without warning.
The headlights are prone to turning to off randomly, sometimes one side, other times both sides. after turning them on/off at the steering column they will come back on for a while then the issue starts over. this problem occurs with the vehicle either moving or in the stationary mode. no headlights when driving at night is a definite safety hazard. so far, toyota refuses to fix. the lights will go out one at a time if the drivers side light goes out both lights have gone out. i got a warning ticket for headlight out by officer when i turned them off and back on they came on. next day went to inspection station and the lights passed. have inspection report and warning ticket. date of incident 11/27/2017. replaced bulbs several times. very dangerous to have both lights go out driving 70 mph.
6 months ago had both headlights replaced. today only the highbeams work.
The headlight randomly flickers then goes out. turning the headlights off then on will get the headlight to turn back on. this happens at random times and is dangerous especially on poorly lit roads in the dark.
One of the headlights keeps going out. i can't really tell when or how it goes out since i can't see it. i'll notice it when i see the reflection in the back of another car. if i turn the bright lights on and off it has no effect, but when i turn them all the way off and back on the light comes back. sometimes on long trips it will stay on the whole time, sometimes it won't. sometimes on short trips it will go out, sometimes it won't. it is not an event i can make happen
The headlights might go off when i have them on. sometimes on the drivers side sometimes on the passenger side. if i turn the headlights on and off they will come back on. sometimes this happens a couple of times in a 1/2 trip sometimes it does not happen at all. a loose connection does not seem to be the problem because i can go over bumps and the lights don't flicker or go off. there is no rhyme or reason, i will just be driving and a headlight will go off and will come back on if i turn the headlight switch off the back to on.
Headlights will randomly turn off when driving or parked. turning off and then on will work but only for a short time.
While at a stop sign i turned on my brights and the headlights went out for about 5 seconds then flickered back on. the headlights have been flickering randomly as well.
Without warning, one or both of the headlights will go out. it can happen shortly after starting the car or at other random times. the problem has continued for months. replacing the bulbs did not fix the problem. problem continued with same frequency
Takata issue: i am filing this complaint on behalf of caela erickson, my seventeen-year old grand-daughter. the vehicle was recently purchased used as her first-vehicle. the first time she drove it at night, the headlights dimmed and then actually turned of! this was while she was driving on a dark and winding back road here in the ojai valley on a busy holiday weekend. this is a very dangerous situation and one that could have had tragic consequences. when we took the vehicle into the local dealership, we were informed that there had been a class action suit settlement years before and that, although the car had been sold used to the previous owner through another dealership, the repair work had not been done. we were informed that the work required to completely replace both headlight systems...work that must be done to make the car safe to drive and that will cost nearly $1000.00...is no longer covered. this is totally unacceptable. if the problem was bad enough to be covered in a class-action suit, why didn't the original dealership insure that the vehicle was safe prior to re-selling it? it seems to me that as the sales end of the toyota corporation, it was their responsibility to have corrected this dangerous problem prior to putting it back on the road. i believe this incident is an example of why this problem needs to be up-graded to a recall! there should not be a time limit on safety issues and consumers should not be placed in danger and/or have to foot the bill for toyota's decision to purchase sub-par products from takata.
The headlights come on but after about ten seconds the left light only goes off. if i flick them off completely and then on again they start the process all over. the light bulb works but it seems to be something technical or electrical. the car was in motion when this happened because i was following my mother and she pulled over to let me know i was running on just one headlight and a cop could pull me over for it. i have to get my car inspected again for license renewal but we have to fix this first!
I was driving my car in the dark and the head lights failed leaving me driving in complete darkness. when i stop my car and turned it off and back on the headlights come back on. i was driving at that moment on an circle exit ramp that had no street lights; complete darkness.
The car's hid headlamp just goes out sporadically. so far, it is "solved" by turning headlamps off and on again; but it repeats itself. the front right strut was broken shortly after we bought the car (55 days ago) and needed replacement. we replaced strut.
Headlights are unreliable, they can go off (one or both) at any time. this problem is well documented on many internet sites
My passenger side headlight bulb goes off suddenly and i have to switch it off and on and it will back on for some time and goes off again. i paid $ to replace the headlight bulb and after couple of months the problem arise again and this time it's ballast failure which i still didn't fix due to high cost. i need help if toyota can look into this issue which deals with our driving safety.
When the car is turned on and the headlights are turn on, a few seconds later the headlight on the left hand side goes off. when turned off and back on again, they turn right back on. the same thing happened on the road (freeway to be exact). have to keep turning it off and back on to be able to see the road clearly. tried replacing lightbulb but still having the same problem happening. scared to drive car at night with my children because this can cause an accident.
Headlight failure! well driving near my neighborhood the hid headlights suddenly shut off causing me to lose focus on the road for a brief moment putting pedestrians at risk. to go from the illumination of a high intensity discharge to nothing is very unsafe. i have read multiple forums this is not a one-time occurrence and from what i've read you guys are well aware of this problem and have yet to issue a recall. may i ask why?
Drivers side headlight went out randomly while driving for 3-4 days, then failed entirely and was replaced at dealership.
Reading about the headlight issue, also exists on my car. has been this way since i bought it with 148k miles on it. i had the one headlight die thing happen. dealership said they knew about the issue but that it wasn't part of a recall. i had to get lower voltage aftermarket headlights to get 2 to work at the same time and to avoid the $400 cost of replacement bulbs. rediculous. i was afraid the headlight left on would shut off as well. you'd think toyota would take responsibility for an issue occuring on all their same type of car, but they haven't. very disappointing. sorry, even with one headlight hid bluish light, still hard to see. we really need two working lights and no stress when it comes to replacement. this should be an easily affordable experience, but its not. read on the web, lots of other people also have this issue and it doesn't go away.
My headlights keep going out for no reason. the bulbs are not burned out but they will go out and i have to turn them off and back in. it makes driving at night very dangerous.
Driver side headlight turns off intermittently while driving.
