We have classified the 375 complaints from 2009 Toyota Corolla about STEERING into the following categories.
While driving at highway speeds my 2009 toyota corolla pulls to the left as though it is very windy outside even though it is not windy outside. this happens every time while driving at highway speeds. i have done nothing to correct the problem because there has not been a recall. *tr
On february 11, 2010, when i was driving our new 2009 toyota corolla from wilmington to philly on i95 and my husband was sitting on the passenger side. we feel our vehicle was continuously vibrating. the car vibrate just like the earthquake. our speed is only 55 miles an hour. and there is no wind in that day. it is very hard to control and we were scared, so we slowly take the brake and stop the car to inspect, we did not find anything unusual. then we kept driving it on the i95, we felt the same vibration. regarding to the safety consideration, we left the highway and we are afraid of driving it on highway right now. i consulted with some people who have some knowledge on car, they told me it is some problem with the steer system. i am communicating with my dealers and trying to get the feedback from them. *tr
While driving on the highway my 2009 toyota corolla sways back and forth in the lane, sometimes causing my vehicle to go into the left or right lane. for awhile i thought it was due to the wind or maybe the road being uneven but i have driven on different highways and it has occurred many times. the vehicle sways when i reach speeds of 40+. the wheel will be straight but the vehicle will still sway from side to side. i saw that other 2009 toyota corolla owners were experiencing the same issue and i realized it was something to do with the vehicle and not just surroundings such as the wind or the road. *tr
I bought toyota corolla 2009 a year ago. and after 2 weeks i bought i complained about the steering wheel by feeling the survey form and even i went to the dealer to check this for me. the steering wheel is very very bad.... when you drive you car more than 50 mile per hour.... it is very hard to keep the lane straight.... you have to grab the wheel really hard... you feel swinging left and right when you drive this car in a highway. starting from week 1. i am extremely disappointed with the performance of the steering wheel of this car. i was expecting to hear from toyota following my complaint.... but i didn't hear anything. i am still driving this car with less confidence and scared every single time i drive. i never felt driving a new car for a single day. seriously, these toyota corolla 2009 model needs to be checked for the steering wheel. since i have already bought it i can't to anything but i would love to have my complaints heard by toyota and fix the issue. the steering wheel is very bad. *tr
Steering drifts to right. must hold steering wheel with both hands at all times to keep it straight. dealer said this is normal for electric steering. *tr
My 2009 toyota corolla has steering issues, especially at highway speeds. this car is impossible to keep tracking straight without constant correction to the steering wheel. it wants to "gently" wander from side to side all the time. this poses a danger to anyone driving this car as well as others on the road. i was a toyota service technician for approximately 5 years and have never encountered such a problem with a properly functioning vehicle. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. while driving 50 mph the steering wheel malfunctioned and caused the vehicle to move from the left to the right into the other lanes, uncontrollably. the vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. the failure mileage was 14,000 and the current mileage is 14,400. updated 03/11/10 *bf updated 05/13/10*jb
Car drifts high speeds about 1' ft. like on a windy day ! but no wind bought 2 new set of tires / and aliegned did not fix !!! went to dealer they said no recalls but other people say eps can be re- tuned
My car always shifts to the left. i thought it's an alignment problem, so i sent my car to auto check to adjust the alignment. after service, the problem still remains. i don't have an accident because of it. *tr
I own a 2009 corolla since may 2008 and since the first day i bought my car, i have had this feeling that the steering on my corolla is "super sensitive" and that is a challenge to keep the car from veering to either side. i had the alignment checked but that did not help a lot. i always thought that maybe it is due to the fact that the 2009 corollas have an electric power steering versus the hydraulic power steering in the earlier models, and since i have never owned an electric power steering car in the past, i feel it different but now reading about the challenge that other 2009 corolla owners face when trying to keep it going straight, it looks like this is something bigger. it is nearly impossible to steer my 09 corolla with one hand (which was never an issue with my previous cars) and it is a challenge to prevent it from veering off the lane. i have to use a tight two handed grip to prevent the car from moving towards another... which happens within seconds and has scared me while driving, more than just a couple times. *tr
I have 2009 toyota corolla. over speed 60 miles i feel steering problem. its hard to stay in the middle of a lane, car goes both left and right at high speeds. in addition if the road is slippery, i need to handle steering very carefully. i don't think my car is safe. *tr
I live in minnesota and during winter my 2009 toyota corolla produce a slipping on black ice sensation when passing under a bridge. this usually happens at highway speed and i'm not steering the car at all. it's like the car temporarily steer itself under the bridge without me moving the steering wheel. i have to keep the steering extra still to avoid a skid or shifting to another lane. my car also has poor antilock braking. the antilock frequency is way to high to be effective in low speed driving. it usually cause skid and long braking distance. *tr
My toyota corolla/s/l has had steering problems since we bought it. especially on the highway the car veers/swerves to the left and right like you were driving in a wind storm. this is my 18 year old daughters car. it's a 2009 with 20,000 on it and every single time she brings it for a oil change she tells the mechanic to check the alignment because she has a hard time steering it on the highway. which that is the only driving she really does. she commutes to college. i am very worried. *tr
My 2009 toyota corolla s veers (as if hit by harsh wind) while driving 60+ mph on the highway. i was driving out of state on a highspeed highway when i noticed the problem. i had to slow down and hold onto the steering wheel with both hands to keep my car in my lane. i have only had the problem occur at high speeds so i have been driving slower since then. i found out yesterday that there may be another possible recall and that's when i decided to file a complaint. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2002 toyota corolla. while driving 40 mph, the vehicle acclerated, crashed into another vehicle and was impacted on the passenger side. the air bags deployed and the vehicle was destroyed. the contact was taken to the hospital but did not sustain major injuries. the contact stated that the vehicle made a left turn own it's own and caused the crash to occur and that the power steering was faulty. the failure mileage was 36,000. updated 05/10/10*jb
I have a 2009 toyota corolla. within the first few weeks i noticed that the car did not track straight. it seemed to take constant correction to the steering wheel to keep it going in a straight line. i took it to the dealer for alignment and they said they checked it and the alignment was fine. i also took it to an independent serviceman and they said it was fine also. it still is not right. i have gotten used to it a little. i am taking my car in to the dealer next week for the brake pedal recall and i will lodge a complaint with them at that time. *tr
I own a 2009 toyota corolla. since day one, i noticed that driving highway speeds, the steering feels very loose. it takes two hands to constantly try to keep the car to go straight. the closest sensation would be like hydroplaining. this is an issue that needs to be addressed. *tr
We have an 09 corolla xle...the car wanders at speeds over 45 mph from lane to lane...it takes effort to keep it straight... ...toyota has said it is the electric power steering... *tr
2009 corolla steering failure - please bring this issue to light. my power steering just failed and i had to have both the steering column and steering computer replaced. *tr
While driving my 2009 toyota corolla it "floated" into the lane next to me. i was coming to a stop at a traffic light and the vehicle started to "float" into the right lane next to me. i turned the steering wheel to the far left and the vehicle continued to turn to the right. i had no control over the steering. i came to a complete stop and when i started to drive again the vehicle drove fine. the roadway was dry. *tr
Constant fighting with steering wheel to keep vehicle on path! *tr
Driving on a highway or roads the is above 50 mph, my car steering wheel started to make a unusual movements ,it feels like don't have any control over the vehicle i recently had a incident, it was a monday morning went i was driving on a parkway about 55 mph went my vehicle star to pull to my right them left and was very hard to stay in a straight line so i stop and call my dealer and have them check it out but nothing have been done to my car.since i buy my car i felt this problem and i took my car back to the dealer three times all ready and they say is a engineer problem and because is a sport car ,so after i read about this issue over the internet i'm very sure i wasn't the only one with this problem. please i willing to provide my car for a deep inspection because i don't feel secure with this car. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. while driving at speeds of 60 mph, the steering wheel exhibited minimal resistance, causing the front end of the vehicle to sway outside of the traveled lane without driver intent. the failure would occur intermittently. the dealer stated that there were no recalls on his vehicle pertaining to that type of failure. the contact also stated that he would often experience sudden surging of the vehicle engine upon removing his foot from the accelerator pedal and traveling at a steady speed on the freeway. the approximate failure mileage was 49,000 and the current mileage was 52,000.
My 2009 toyota corolla's electric steering wanders all over the highway. you can't take your hands off the wheel for a second without the car drifting into another lane. *tr
My 2009 toyota corolla keeps pulling left - it is particularly obvious (and more difficult to handle)when driving 55mph+ on the highway. i went to my dealership, reported the problem and asked them to check on it last week. they said that there was no problem with the alignment of the car. however, they rotated my two front tires - which did not fix the problem. my car keeps pulling left when driving at high speeds (55 mph+) on the highway. this hasn't caused an accident yet, but it does make it difficult to drive the vehicle. *tr
Okay enough is enough. i drove on interstate 75 today in florida speed limit is 70mph. i was going between 65-70 and i came inches to hitting an 18wheeler, thankfully in my attempt to control the steering i slightly veered to the right and of course the corolla veered a lot more to the right than i intended but at least there were no vehicles in that lane. god was with me. i am aware of my car's steering issue but i cannot drive at 30mph on a highway. keeping the steering straight is a task all on its own. i'm focusing on the car not veering into another lane and causing a fatal accident when i should be focusing on the road and driving in a normal state rather then a panicky one. i drive this highway everyday and i have been close many times to hitting other vehicles. i really need this to be investigated i am becoming more and more scared every day on my drive to work. driving in that state of mind is not safe. i'm considering my states lemon law petition program because its obvious that toyota either doesn't care or probably to busy fixing their other flaws. i'm through with toyota i just want them to take back their corolla i can care less about the payments i've made. they need to take their car void my loan because i rather walk and have my life than play russian rullet in that car. this is an everyday incident. and although not physically injured, i am developing a fear of driving with this car on the highway. this is crazy. i am only 25 i shouldn't be frightened of driving my 2009 corolla. tw*
I already filed a previous complaint but forgot to mention that if i go pass 40 the car steers on its own as if it's hydro planing on dry road. i drive on i75 to and from work. speed limit is 70 and when i reach the speed limit i have to constantly be correcting the steering of my car. *cw
Eps steering is very hard to keep car in lane when traveling at highway speed. the best description i can give is that you have to make constant micro adjustments to keep it going straight. i do not feel a pull like a alignment issue but rather the car steering seems to want to drift left or right all the time. i have a 2007 rav4 with eps and it does not have the same issues. *tr
The steering (eps) twitches at highway speeds, sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. it seems to do it more in areas with powerlines and other interference. this is always, not just on a certain date. some days it feels as if the car has a mind of it's own. *tr
This problem has happened at least twice since i bought the toyota corolla 2009. while driving straight(on an interstate) it feels as if we are sliding on black ice and have no control of the steering. i have noticed the steering wheel in general has become very loose and doesn't drive as tightly as it once did a few months ago. *tr
My 2009 toyota corolla has a steering problem especially at higher speeds. the vehicle wants to drift out of lane. constant corrective steering wheel action is required. it seems that the control module does not know where center is or how to maintain center. *tr
Steering issue with 2009 toyota corolla, 25,050 miles. while traveling at 20mph in residential subdivision, vehicle veered left, steering unresponsive, spun 180 degrees and came to rest against the curb on the opposite side of the road. car in front and car to the rear passed through same area without incident. also, vehicle will drift abruptly at highway speeds, similar to effect of high crosswind or ice, with no movement of steering wheel and none of the body roll that usually accompanies a crosswind, requires high level of attentiveness to avoid crossing lane boundaries. this behavior is sporadic, but a 10-mile trip is enough distance for several occurrences. given the intermittent nature of this issue, i have not reported it to the dealership nor to toyota, so nothing has been done and no repairs have been attempted. *tr
I had talked with toyota multiple times regarding what sometimes felt like very loose, uncontrolled steering in my 2009 corolla xle, & was told each time that it was doing what it was supposed to do & i needed to "get used to it." the steering was hypersensitive & when making easy turns, the wheels frequently turned as far as mechanically possible (could hear them hit the wheel well.) i eventually resigned myself to the steering & quit asking them. while driving on a 2 lane road, around a large curve, i found myself to close to an object on the right side of the road. i instinctively pulled the wheel to the left & immediately felt the car try to make a turn, then start to spin, when i tried to steer back to the right trying to correct, i felt no response or control. my car spun around 180 degrees, off the road, & rolled onto the drivers side & part of the roof. as far as interior safety, no air bags deployed but the passenger compartment held up well, & while my insurance co. had to total the car, i only suffered bumps & bruises. now i'm reading that i am not the only one with concerns related to the steering in this car & most of the complaints sound frighteningly familiar to my experiences with it. this accident was reported to the police, but no ticket was given or report filed. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. he stated that the electronic steering wheel became difficult to control and resistant when turning the wheel in either direction. he also stated that the vehicle would bear to the left or right often times without driver intent. the dealer was contacted and they test drove the vehicle with the owner at approximately 35 mph and verified that the failure does exist. when depressing the brakes at various speeds, the brakes would feel as if they were not engaging, then they would immediately respond and lunge the vehicle forward. no repairs were made to correct the failures. the failure and current mileages were under 13,300.
I was driving in the left lane on gsp (nj) at 65mph and all of a sudden the steering was not responding properly and the car was swinging between lanes. i immediately applied the brakes and slowed down and than moved into the right most lane. on that day it was little windy and i not sure if this is the cause but i have driven other cars and never faced this issue. *tr
2009 toyota corolla s . steering input varies and sometimes is more difficult than others. wanders at highway speeds occasionally. *tr
I have a wandering problem with my 2009 toyota corolla. i have tried new tires and alignment to no avail. at highway it tends to wander around the lane even with no wind present. *tr
I recently read about the power steering issue being probed in 2009-10 toyota corollas. the symptoms that i read about are exactly what i experience in my 2009 corolla. when i am at higher speeds, it feels like it is being blown by really strong wind and at times i have to fight to keep it going straight. *tr
My 2009 corolla at high speeds in excess of 55 to 60 on the highway feels like it is absolutely out of control. i feel as if it is almost driven by the wind, even on still days. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. the contact was driving approximately 30 mph. while steering in a straight direction the steering wheel required extreme force. unexpectedly, the steering pulled to the left direction. the consumer lost control; crashed into a ditch and struck a tree. there were no injuries. the police was called to the scene. also, the steering wheel moved to the left and right direction without assistance whenever traveling at any speed. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection. the technician was unable to replicate the failures. the failure mileage was 20,000. the current mileage was 35,000. updated 4/7/2010 *cn the consumer stated he had to constantly correct the steering left to right to keep the vehicle in the lane. 07//27/10*jb
2009 toyota corolla s drifts from left to right at hwy speed. as if driving in strong wind. wonderd why wrists sore after 30 minute commute. read about eps problems and allowed the car to take its course on quiet freeway. sure enough the car pulled fairly strongly left. *tr
My 2009 toyota corolla has a steering problem. the steering is too sensitive. if i look down for just a second or two, the car drifts off the road or it drifts into other lanes quickly. it is especially bad when the wind blows. it happens all of the time especially during medium to high speeds. it contributed to two separated accidents where the car drifted into the guardrail causing thousands of dollars in damage. *tr
2009 corolla wanders at highway speeds above 60 mph, it cannot go in a straight line it wanders three to four in the lane. *tr
I have 2009 toyota corolla le. i noticed that in high speed (60 mph) some times it is difficult to keep the car in lane and at high speed it drifts. i was driving to mississippi from atlanta and noticed the drift. *tr
Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) 1. steering wanders both ways once the car picks up speed, about 100 kmh 2. apparently it occurs once my cellphone is on or proximity to the steering 3. serviced at toyota, they said there are no problems with the steering frame no.: [xxx] *tr
Our 2009 toyota corolla is very difficult to steer on the highway. constantly have to make corrections to keep it in the lane. this is a constant problem and not a single incident. *tr
I have a toyota corolla 2009. my car has some problem with its steering because steering is not steady, and it is moving around line. *tr
I absolutely have the currently-publicized problem with my 2009 toyota corolla drifting at high speeds! it feels like a gust of wind is hitting the car from time to time. it usually happens when going at or above 55-60 mph (basically at highway speeds). *tr
Few problems with my corolla 09. power steering problems, feels very loose and turns by itself sometimes, luckily so far no accidents but is a real issue. brakes makes a noise when reversing or sometimes going forward, i have told the dealer about both issues, but so far they says it's up to toyota standards. *tr
I was driving 15 mph in 33 degree temp. i gave it a little gas at the bottom of a small hill and my car went in to a fish tail. i corrected this about 6 times before i could not recover. my car hit the ditch on the passenger side and flipped on it's roof. prior to the accident my wheel would almost take control of the car between above 30 mph. the car would swerve all over my lane. i thought this was just me, now i see many others have this problem also. question being..... could the alignment be off enough from the eps problems that it could have made it possible that my car would not have been recoverable from? i would like toyota to look in to this to determine the problem before another family of 5 ends up upside down in a ditch. *tr
