Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2009 Toyota Corolla

My car has 91,414 miles and has had multiple cylinder misfires with my normal daily commute of six miles each way. in three years on a 4 cylinder engine i have had three ignition coils replaced, twice within two and a half years and 10,468 miles on the #2 coil. all repairs have been completed by toyota certified repair facilities with toyota oem parts. this is not normal for a low mileage vehicle maintained with regular service.

All dashboards came on and the vehicle stalled. also when pressing the brake or putting any load on the electrical system the vehicle starts stalling. it is not consistent and can't be repeated consistently.

I own a 2009 corolla that has 108,000 miles. i took it to the dealer for the airbag recall fix, and it also had the engine check light on. the dealer said that the obd-ii code p0354 came up in the diagnostics and the vehicle needed a new engine wire harness at a cost of $2,000 dollars. i did my own research and found this toyota technical service bulletin link that describes exactly the problem and also includes my car's vin. http://alflash.com.ua/refer/t-sb-0379-08.pdf apparently, toyota knew of the wiring harness problem, but they chose to conceal it and fix only if the customer complained. they expected the customer to play detective and find their latent design fault! i have owned five other cars since 1973, one for 23 years, and i never had to replace the engine wire harness!

My power doors are not working and the mechanism will not even lock or unlock the doors. sometimes i can't even open the door to get out and it is severe hazard. i can't even manually open them to get in or out. the main actuator is completely broken.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. while driving 5 mph, the contact noticed smoke emitting from the front driver's side door. the door also became extremely hot. the vehicle did not catch fire. there was no police or fire report filed. there were no injuries. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. the approximate failure mileage was 114,820.

While driving on the road, suddenly the red battery sign and abs break red sign came on and steering left or right was extremely hard and could have led to an accident. it was diagnosed as no output from alternator by toyota dealership. seeing this behavior second time in last 2 years due to alternator failure. *tr

Takata recall power window master switch recall smart stop technology

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. while driving 5 mph, smoke suddenly emitted from the driver side door panel. a police and fire report were filed. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the power switch failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 67,000.

The car automatic transmissions shift very hard. the mechanic replaced pressure solenoid valve. i was informed that electronic control module is bad. the symptoms are similar to a volunteer safety recall a0j for 2007-2008 corolla models equipped with 1zz-fe electronic control module. the ecm for certain 2005 through 2008 toyota corolla and corolla matrix models equipped with the 1zz-fe engine and two-wheel drive may have been improperly manufactured. there is a possibility that a crack may develop at certain solder points or on varistors on the circuit board. in most cases, if a crack occurs at certain points or on certain varistors, the engine warning lamp could be illuminated*, harsh shifting could result, or theengine may not start. in limited instances, if cracking occurs on particular solder points or varistors, the engine could stop while the vehicle is being driven which may increase the risk of a crash.

Power window switch on driver side does not function. glass window noisy when driving

Vehicle was stationary in park on level street. all three car door lock actuator failed in a row w/one week period. first drivers, front passengers, and passenger behind driver's door. noticed issue when locking door with key fob "lock" button to activate car alarm. car alarm would not activate. walked back to vehicle to check if doors were locked. doors were not locked and in the open "red" color position.

My 2009 corolla experienced issues identical to a prior recall circa 2010 for '05-'08 corolla & matrix models regarding engine control modules (ecm) that may have been improperly manufactured. on 3/30/16, the check engine light turned on and my vehicle experienced harsh shifting and struggled for gas. vehicle was in motion with over a 1/4 tank of gas on a residential street at the time. on 3/31/16, i had the vehicle towed to my local toyota dealership. diagnostics were run and ecm fault codes were identified. service associates working on my corolla addressed their concerns and were repeatedly denied requests for a replacement ecm. at one point, i was advised by toyota dealership staff to personally order an ecm unit through the parts dept., insisting that the request coming directly from a customer would not be denied. i attempted to place an order with parts, and that request later was denied. after several re-tests and denied requests for a replacement ecm, my vehicle received a replacement tail light bulb (what i refer to as a "band-aid" fix) and was released back to me on 4/5/16. the very next morning (4/6/16), check engine light came back on and vehicle was brought in. once again, codes tied to the ecm were identified. after another week of tests, denied ecm fix requests, and another band-aid repair, the vehicle was released back to me on 4/14/16. during this two-week ordeal, i incurred over $540 in rental car expenses and $186 in "band-aid" repairs, despite the fact that ecm issues were identified from the beginning. i have opened 2 cases with toyota customer experience center to address this ecm issue with my 2009 corolla, the prior 2010 recall, and have requested that my vin be incorporated into the recall. so far, toyota has denied any responsibility, insisting that their ecms don't fail, offering no assistance for issues they deem off-warranty/off-recall.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. while driving 30 mph, the steering wheel seized and the windows failed to function. in addition, the instrument panel lights illuminated. the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was unknown. the approximate failure mileage was 81,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. every time the vehicle was started, the srs warning indicator remained illuminated. the contact received a recall notification for nhtsa campaign number: 14v168000 (steering column assembly). the dealer was charging to have the vehicle repaired. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 115,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. while attempting to start the vehicle, several warning indicators illuminated. the contact stated that the vehicle idled and drove poorly. upon further investigation, the contact noticed that the wire insulation material was made out of a soy-based material. the contact was concerned that critical functions could have been compromised. the vehicle was taken to del toyota (2945 e lincoln hwy, thorndale, pa 19372, (610) 383-6200) where it was diagnosed that rodents chewed through the transmission wiring harness. additionally, rodents also chewed through the turn signal wiring harness for the left turn signal. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact received case number: 1710262425. the approximate failure mileage was 34,856.

I had spoken to mike from carson toyota regarding this recall more than 6 months ago. i found out about this recall from my coworker who has the same model and year car as mine. mike had told me that only a few toyotas were on recall and the last time i had gotten my oil changed there, he told me that my model was not in that recall.. but i did get a letter in the mail. i told him that my coworker told me about the electrical window on the right side. mike had told me that it wouldn't be covered. i would have to pay about $400 plus for that window that got stuck. mike did tell me that my vin model was not counted for. i am real upset. this past december, i drove to san francisco when it is raining and windy, this is a real big hazard for a branch to have come inside my car without my daughter being able to close to the window and had poked her arm some how.

7.5y old corolla le with 61,000 miles of gentle driving/excellent maintenance, all of a sudden, the alternator failed and the car steering wheel is locked, throwing me into panic. i managed to pull into a bank parking lot at chase bank on 161 w spring creek pkwy, plano. my previous car was 1995 corolla, had same experience. i would never feel safe in these vehicles. i feel these denso alternators may be defective at such low mileage and gentle use. anyone else have similar issue with denso alternator [model 104210-5480]?

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. the contact stated that the horn failed to sound. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the horn wire needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 80,000.

After replacing the alternator in my 2009 corolla in july 2015. my timing chains and water pump malfunctioned while driving on the highway. i was unaware and so was the mechanic that the timing belts were damaged until after the water pump and serpentine belt was replaced. due to timing issues from the previous malfunctions, i am now in need of a new motor. my vehicle has all required repairs or maintenance completed as scheduled and my vehicle has not even made it to 80,000 miles.

Driver side power window switch started smoking and i had to take it out to prevent a fire. one of the switches would not operate freely and seemed to get stuck. thought i was going to have a fire and when i removed it i found components melted. cannot operate window and it is in open position. vehicle was moving at the time and i had to return to home and park since switch was smoking.

I have a 2009 toyota corolla (le). i bought it almost exactly 3 years ago with about 12,300 miles on it. currently, it does not have 50k. i have to drive downtown for nursing school, it takes roughly 20-30 minutes. the very terrifying and incredibly dangerous issue that i have been having is that i will be driving 65mph on the expressway and it will suddenly just drop down to 30/40mph. due to this issue, i have almost been in a crash. i will change lanes thinking my car will accelerate to pass someone and it will just drop down to 30mph! also, while i am idle, it will shake and rev..so the rpm will be up close to 2; yet, i am idle! i have read of others experiencing similar issues. this is so dangerous and i do not understand why this has not been addressed sooner. the worst part is no one knows what is wrong. i took it and had a diagnostic test run, it said one of the ignition coils was faulty..on a 2009 toyota with less than 50k miles...that doesn't sound, right huh. well, i took it to a mechanic and they gave me a new battery, an oil change and ran another diagnostic test (after switching the ignition coil(b) to another (acord). it recorded nothing. i spent $500 it was fine for about an hour then the check engine light came back on and it started doing the same thing. i am very angry with toyota for not addressing this issue, especially since others have experienced it and it is dangerous. my safety and the safety of others is at risk.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. during inclement weather, the vehicle would not start. the contact constantly had to wait for the weather conditions to improve in order for the key to turn over to start the vehicle. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the vin was not available. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 118,000.

Driver's door lock does not lock/unlock when pressing the lock/unlock button on the key fob and pressing the lock/unlock button on the driver's door and passengers door.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. the contact stated that while traveling on a hill, the alternator assembly warning light illuminated and the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was merged to the side of the road, where the vehicle failed to restart. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the alternator needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 90,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. while driving approximately 40 mph, the abs and battery warning indicators illuminated. the odometer, blinkers, and front windshield wipers failed. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the computer failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 87,700.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. while driving approximately 45 mph, the vehicle suddenly shut off. after restarting the engine, the vehicle operated normally. the contact indicated that the failure occurred on multiple occasions. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. the manufacturer was not notified of the failures. the failure mileage was 126,000.

The high beams on the headlights come on without the control being touched. this began when i first bought the car & still does. at first it would happen at any time of the day but now it happens only when it is dark or getting dark. this could impair the vision of the driver of an oncoming vehicle. it is most dangerous on narrow streets. there are other electrical problems that occur from time to time such as the cruise control, power mirrors, air conditioner, driving & dash lights not working. also the dome light has remained on causing the battery to run down .these latter problems do not seem to pose the threat that the headlights do but they seem to be connected & they are a distraction that could cause problems. i have taken my car to the dealer many times but they never corrected the problem.

At 89,000 miles, the battery light came on early in the day but i continued to drive it after stopping at toyota who confirmed it was a "battery light." later in the day, while traveling close to home at about 25mph, all the lights came on in the dashboard and the car started to seize up: steering wheel became difficult to maneuver and i could barely get the car over to the curb (it happened within minutes). the car completely shut down. it turned out to be an alternator gone bad. frightening experience but i am glad it happened at 25 mph and not on the freeway earlier in the day, or it could have caused an accident. in the future, i will get all warning lights checked out promptly and not assume that a battery symbol means only the battery is dying. perhaps toyota needs an "alternator light" as well, as this is a serious situation. *tr

My 2009 toyota corolla, which i bought new in 2009, power window panel, caught fire on december 30 while i was driving it and when i brought it to the franchise i purchased it from on december 31, they told me, it was regular wear and tear and that my car was old and i would have to pay for it myself. *tr

While traveling nw on hwy 99 through merced ca at 08:30 am nov. 9, 2014, i experienced a sudden acceleration of my car while in cruise mode going up the ramp just at the nw edge of merced. it continued to accelerate till the rpm gauge was into the red. at the same time, i was very tense, maneuvering in traffic while applying the brakes in an effort to slow down or stop, which heated up until they were barely working. i shut the motor off while in drive and turned it back on a few times and each time the engine went right into high rev mode again. i finally put the transmission into n and shut the engine off and coasted to the side of the road about a mile or so from where the problem started, regained my composure and allowed the car to sit a few minutes. i tried the engine starter and things seemed normal again so i cautiously exited the highway about a 1/4 mile from where i had stopped. things continued to act normally so i came back home 18 miles and had no more problems. what do i do with this car? keep driving it this way? take it back to toyota? they did the recall repair for this problem already, yet now this!! very troubling! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. the contact stated that the horn failed to activate. the failure occurred multiple times. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was unavailable.

This vehicle has had the water pump go out the brakes the alternator has had problems with the emergency brakes the air bag has had the struts replaced the gas lever stopped working and now the trunk release won't work i have replaced now 5 tires because one blow right after i got the car and now my car has just 85 thousand miles on it. i have heard so many good things about toyota but this is the worst car i have ever own i will never buy or advise anyone to buy a toyota again. *tr

Driving on interstate and suddenly check battery light and check engine light came on and temp indicated vehicle was hot. pulled over as soon as able to safely do so. *js

1. while driving at approx. 25 mph, the car suddenly lost power; i was able to drive about 2 mph into a nearby gas station. the battery light was not on, but the orange engine light came on. after 5 minutes, the employee was able to start the car and i drove one mile to my home. my repair mechanic did a computer scan indicating possible problems with a switch and suggested that i drive around for about a week before returning. 2. a similar incident occurred 10 days later. i glided into a parking lot, waited 10 min., and the car resumed at regular speed. 3. on 8/7/14, i drove 2 mi. back to the repair shop at a regular speed. a second scan could not be completed because the car suddenly stopped responding to the repair shop's computer. at this point the car is completely inoperable and must be towed to a toyota dealer. i was advised that i may need a new computer. my 2009 toyota corolla has about 48,000 miles on it. i do not believe that a computer failure is normal within the age and mileage range of this car. thank you for looking into this issue.. *tr

I am the original owner of a 2009 toyota corolla which i purchased new from a local toyota dealership. i have always had them do recommended service, etc. and have taken great care of this vehicle. in july 2014 my car was making a rattling sound and i took it in for service. at that time it barely turned over and started, although i had replaced the battery in 2013. the car had a faulty alternator and when they were doing service they also discovered a broken water pump. the car only had apprx. 27,000 miles at that time. on 8-9-15 the car barely started and as i backed out the battery light came on and i lost my power steering. i had to have the car towed to the dealership and the problem was another defective alternator! the car only has less than 32,000 miles and another alternator. although the part was just out of warranty, the dealership covered the part, but i had to pay 132.00 labor and go without a vehicle for 2 days. my family and i always own toyotas and have excellent service from the cars. this one, not so much! now i'm wondering what will go next. i think this will be my last toyota.

While i was driving the car started stalling really bad and losing power, the engine light came up and i couldn't speed more than twenty five miles, because the car started trying to shut off on me in the middle of the street again. i took the car to get checked out and the troubleshooting codes came out as being the ignition coils due to the engine harness being bad, (difficult to believe i said ), cables don't go bad like that in florida. *tr

Steering wheel coil remedy never resolved took vehicle in twice for service update at the dealership on steering column coil and airbags.was turning at 5 miles an hour on way to drive onto a trailer so the vehicle could be pulled when the steering wheel was sloppy and was hit by another car from the left side

During slow speeds or stopped when i press on the gas pedal to move forward the car's check engine light comes on and i can't move forward until i turn the car off, then back on. this has happened at stop lights, in parking garages, and even on the interstate. not safe! this is my third time taking my vehicle to the toyota dealership to fix the same problem. i paid $900 to fix the ecu (which they told me was the issue), but the same problem keeps happening. the second time i took it in they fixed something with the brake lights, now the third time they fixed something with a short to the brakes ... something about the taillights blinking rapidly? i doubt the problem is fixed and i am very frustrated to pay that kind of money with no refund when the same issue keeps happening. a very similar issue happened in a recall with the 2005-2008 corolla/matrix models and they had the ecm fixed with no charge. sounds like the same problem to me. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. the contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the abs and the brake lights illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the mechanic diagnosed that the sensor on the passenger's side rear, and the power assist vacuum system needed to be replaced. the vehicle had not been repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 52,800.

On 10/21/2013 at about 12 am i was dropping off my wife and daughter in front of our apartment complex. i was driving a toyota 2009 corolla (vin-[xxx]). the vehicle had a sudden, abrupt and unintended acceleration i pressed the brake pedal it did not stop. it went over a curb in the parking lot and collided with another vehicle standing on the opposite side. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr...updated 11/03/14 *bf updated 8/5/2015 *js

Sporadically the car would give the driver the sensation of severe wind buffeting (car would wiggle side to side). this occurred in both od and 3rd (no other gears tested), with all electronics on, then off (radio, cruise, vent, ac, etc.) and both on and off the nys thruway. occurrences did not cause the driver to lose control of vehicle though it made it difficult to keep the car within the lane markings. this condition was not noticed on 55mph more rural roads in which frequent or semi frequent stops were encountered. our plan is to secure a hero cam in an attempt to record actual steering wheel's (front tires) motion apart from operator's physical steering wheel within passenger compartment. although no loss of control was encountered each occurrence was not always the same in severity so no assertions are being made as to whether or not this condition could yield a catastrophic failure at highway speeds thus producing a severe accident harming vehicles occupants or other vehicle's occupants sharing the same roadway. *tr

Loss of steering at a right bend in the street, think the power went out to the electronic power assist, car went straight into a sign pole with a large cement base, major damage to front end, airbag didn't deploy, seat belt didn't work and there was no power at all to the car even though the battery was not damaged. car was recently at toyota dealership for recall to repair to electrical power window problem to prevent electrical fire, oil change and service done at same time, the car has been well maintained. new tires and brakes. opened a claim with toyota, so far met with apathy and resistance. *tr

Car had just been started, was departing a parking garage and power steering suddenly failed, followed by engine failure. car would not start again; battery was completely drained. alternator had gone bad and was replaced. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. the contact stated that while driving 20 mph, the steering wheel locked, the brakes failed to stop, and the accelerator failed. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnosis where it was stated that the alternator and battery needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 42,000.

2009 toyota corolla. consumer writes in regards to vehicle console accessory fuse blowing out. *smd when the fuse blew out, he was unable to charge his phone, and other accessories. the consumer stated the fuse was replaced several times.

Vehicle lost power steering on freeway, all electronic components shut down and i was stranded on the side of the freeway. the car would not start, after $3200.00 in repairs, the mechanic said the pistons looked like they were from a 30 year old car. regular oil changes, well maintained, this car is not reliable! *tr

Abs and brake light turned on together. this is turning out to be a very common issue which is due to the corrosion of the sensors on the rare wheels. with abs light turned on, the vehicle is incapable of applying abs when required during brake, creating a high safety concern. *tr

Car was turned off and parked in a parking lot on a normal day, i came back to it turned the car on and smoke started coming out of the power window controls on the driver side, i turned of the car right away, the smoke got worse and then there were flames. i was picking up a friend from work at a car dealership and some people working in the body shop help me put out the fire with a fire extinguisher. the window controls, door handle and door to some extant melted and were destroyed. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. the contact stated that there was a fire inside of the driver's side door panel. the contact stated that while driving the vehicle, he smelled smoke. the contact then poured water down the door panel. the contact stated that the vehicle had not been inspected because the manufacturer planned on doing so, but had not yet done that. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 84,000.
