Putting gasoline into my 2008 jeep liberty, the gas pump shuts off as expected however gasoline spews out of the jeep's filling system. tried different pumps same results, this occurs without "topping off the tank". this i a serious safety hazard with gas being spilled on my clothing, shoes, hands, vehicle and ground. once this happens the interior of the vehicle smells like gas causing headaches and breathing problems. i am just waiting for someone to cause a spark at the gas pump to ignite me. i have seen numerous complaints on various internet forums stating the same issues, this tells me that this is a real problem that jeep has not addressed. *tr
Fuel spurts and spills out after each fill-up after gas nozzle shuts off. jeep 2008 liberty with 44,000 miles. *tr
While filling up my 2008 jeep liberty the gas pump shut off automatically as it should have, but a large amount of gas spit out of the gas tank fill tube all over the ground and vehicle. this is the second time in a row that this has happened with this vehicle. it seems to be an issue with the tank venting. vehicle has only 19,254 miles on it. *tr
We have an overflowing gas tank. when pump clicks that the tank is full gas comes pouring out onto myself and the side of the vehicle onto the ground. *tr
When filling the gas tank with gas it over fills everytime. the pump is stopped when full, but it will over fill enough to where it will come spraying out. *tr
Every time i fuel my 2008 jeep liberty the fuel nozzle does not shut off properly when full, causing fuel to spew out onto the car, my hands, my clothing and the concrete beneath the car at the gas station. i complained to the dealer while the vehicle was under warranty on 3/9/2010 and they replaced the filler tube. the repair did not fix the problem. i have been living with this issue for a year now. today, while at the gas station, the person in the isle next to me, driving a 2008, 4-door jeep wrangler, had the same issue. i asked her about it and she said the problem had just begun for her in the past month, but it now happens to her every fuel up. i decided i would look into it further. after seeing the multiple online posts, i decided to make a complaint, as this is obvioiusly a defect with jeep vehicles. *tr
Fuel spill during refueling. while refueling the car, when the tank was almost full, fuel started to spill resulting in spraying the car and the ground within 3 feet radius with gas. this creates a risk of fire and health hazards by spilling gas onto skin. chrysler/jeep is aware of the problem and they have a tsb for this problem but refuse to make a recall. they are also aware of the problem on this particular vehicle and the vehicle was at the dealer service center 3 times for this particular problem but so far they have failed to fix the issue. *tr
When my wife fills here 2008 jeep liberty the fuel pump doesn't shut off and full shots out of the filler. this came on suddenly had it looked at once (non-jeep dealer) and found nothing. this even happens when the pump is set to the lowest speed. this is dangerous and wasteful! *tr
When filling the gas tank on a 2008 jeep liberty, fuel will overflow out of the tank filler tube on to the vehicle and ground after the fuel pump has shut off. fuel overflows out of the filler tube after the fuel pump is shut off, even when filling it at a low flow rate. it started occurring when the vehicle had approximately 55,000 miles. *tr
Every time i fill up my gas tank the nozzle does not trigger to release the shut off on the gas coming back out of the input which results in a lot of gas overflowing back onto my vehicle, the ground and my clothes. this happens even if i watch the amount of gallons being put into the tank and try and shut it off ahead of time. *tr
2008 jeep liberty with 45k miles. now with gas tank overflow when filling both automatically and manually. gas overflows onto car and ground every time tank is filled completely, doesn't matter how you adjust nozzle or which gas stations is used. dealer unable to locate problem despite mulitple complaints filed to various safety agencies. huge safety and health consequences. *tr
While filling my jeep with gasoline the pump is never triggered to shutoff and it causes a lot of fuel spilling all over me, the car and the ground. prompting me to quickly clean myself and the car. this is an extremely dangerous situation not only due to its flammability but also its potential carcinogenic effects. *tr
When putting gasoline into the gas tank, the pump is never triggered to turn off. thus causing a substantial amount of fuel to gush out of the tank and all over the vehicle, the ground and sometimes the person pumping the fuel. *tr
2008 jeep liberty. i have owned the vehicle for 3 years and 5 months. it has 43,000 miles. four months ago the issue began while filling the car with gas. the gas pump does not turn off when the tank is full causing an overflow of gasoline onto the car and ground. this happens every time we refuel. several people have refueled just to ensure it was not user error and the same thing happens. we have also used many different gas stations. i have contacted the dealer and their response is that an issue has not been found and a recall has not been issued. the consumer stated chrysler agreed to pay for the fuel tank replacement and therefore request to delete this complaint. updated 06/07/11 *tr
We just bought a 2008 jeep liberty with 25000 miles on it and everytime we fill up it spews gas. i have tried putting the gas nozzle in farther, out half way, filling it up slowly but still everytime the nozzle clicks about a second or two later gas spews from the tank. *tr
2008 jeep liberty limited. gas overflows. took to dealer and was told they could find nothing wrong. gas continues to spew out after filling. the problem continues. *tr
I bought the car in 2009 as the second owner with 18,000 miles on it. about 6 months ago every time i fill up the gas tank it overflows and sprays gas all over the place. at first i thought it was the station but after using multiple stations i now have to estimate how much gas is left in the tank and then try and fill it up. this needs to be fixed as it is a major safety issue.
Jeep liberty 2008 gas gushing out every time after filling tank - according to dealer, roll-over valve is faulty inside gas tank so entire gas tank must be replaced (about $800+). this valve ensures that gas will not leak into vehicle in the event of a roll-over accident; also ensures gas won't shoot out of the gas tank after filling with fuel. gas erupts out of tank and back onto the face, body and feet of the consumer as well as all down the side of vehicle and onto the ground near gas pumps. very unsafe hazard. not a maintenance problem but rather a defective part inside the gas tank. should not be the consumer's responsibility to replace. vehicle is only 2 1/2 years old with 40,000 miles logged. this occurs each and every time the tank is filled whether or not it is on auto-fill or manually regulated. tricky work to manually stop gas flow before it gushes out. lodged complaint with jeep of america but was told only possible recourse was to pay for repair myself; submit claim to them after the fact, and they may or may not decide to assist me with costs (they won't call it reimbursement) for some or all of my expenses. they claimed no responsibility and complete lack of knowledge about the problem although this concern is posted all over the internet in various forums. thank you. *tr
When refueling, vehicle gushes fuel back out at the consumer after pump clicks off. has done this many times since i bought it last month. it is dangerous and environmentally bad to spew fuel on consumer and on the ground, for fire and health reasons. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep liberty. the contact stated while adding gasoline to the fuel tank the fuel would spill out. the dealer was contacted but offered no assistance. the manufacturer informed the contact to talk to nhtsa regarding the failure. the failure mileage was 64,000. updated 9/13/11 *cn updated 09/30/11.
The fuel spills out of the tank when fueling the car resulting in gas on the vehicle and ground of the gas station. this has been going on for about two months. i have taken it to the dealer who said it needed a fuel vapor filter replaced. this did not fix the problem and now the dealer states i need a new gas tank. since this is a non-maintainable part i feel it is a mfr. defect and a very unsafe one at that. *tr
2008 jeep liberty. consumer states several problems with the vehicle *tgw the consumer stated each time he filled the gas tank, gasoline spilled out of the fill opening moments after the nozzle shut off was triggered. the spill occurred in a boiling type manner and the volume of the spill was significant. the consumer also stated, throughout the three years he has owned the vehicle, he had a problem with rain getting inside the vehicle. the point of entry appeared to be at the top of the rear lift gate. the water volume was significant and not only soaked the rear bed, but it also ran to the front of the vehicle and soaked the front passenger carpet. the problem has been fixed twice, with the report that some drains ports were clogged. the last repair involved some additional caulking. *jb

The gastank overflows and spits out a considerable amount of gasoline every time you get gas! it is a hazard and a safety issue. i have contacted chrysler jeep for a year now and they refuse to assist in correcting the problem. i have attempted to get the gastank repaired and it still will not work properly. from my research there are many of these complaints online about this same issue. i can't believe jeep has not issued a recall on these vehicles. i am worried everyday about the safety of me and my family. i'm not willing to take any more chances with gas all over the truck every time i drive, and how can i go about selling a car to someone with this problem. i am not sure where to go next. i hope you can help in this matter. *tr
I purchased my 2008 jeep liberty 4x4 in november 2010, and every single time i have filled up with gas, the fuel spills out of the tank just as the nozzle shuts off. this has happened at every gas station and every type of pump i have used. it is very frustrating because the gas runs down the side of the vehicle (near the exhaust), onto the ground, and often gets on me. i cannot imagine this is safe. not only is the spill harmful to the environment, it is also a fire hazard. and, with fuel prices creeping up, i become more and more frustrated at this wasted fuel that i am paying for. i have contacted my dealership about the issue and they informed me that a similar issue was found in 2007-2008 jeep wranglers, but there was no recall. please make chrysler take responsibility for the faulty valve that is supposedly causing this issue - for the safety and piece of mind of all loyal jeep owners. *tr
I own a 2008 jeep liberty. i am the second owner and purchased in late november 2010. the mileage at purchase was only 8,000 miles. when i filled the tank for the very first time, it overflowed, spilling gas down the side of the jeep, on my feet, clothes, hands, etc. every time i fill the tank, it over flows. i feel that this is highly unsafe as well as an inconvenience. i have to constantly shut off the pump early to avoid an overflow. i took it to the dealership and they informed me that i need a new gas tank at $730. i am now at 17,000 miles, well under the 3yr/36,000 mile warranty but due to the date, the warranty is expired. this is unsafe and ridiculous. a vehicle with 8,000 miles should not have gas spilling out of the tank at every fill. i understand that there is a current recall on wranglers for the same issue but nothing is being done about the liberty. *tr
At around the 74,000 mile marker, my gas tank began spewing out gasoline upon filling up at the gas station. the tank holds roughly 17.5 gallons, and the nozzle (up to this point) would always automatically shut off upon a full tank when at the pump. now, when the tank is nearing full, the fuel spills out of the gas tank, leaking gasoline all over the side of the vehicle, on my hands, shoes, clothes and ground. the only way to try and avoid this issue is to estimate a cut-off point in which to stop pumping fuel at around the 17.0 gallon mark, which is still very hard to do without the spillage occurring and often leaves me with a partial fillup to avoid getting soaked in gasoline. as of 4 days ago, my gascap and check engine indicator lights came on. i've fully refueled 3 times since then and tightened the gas cap and the lights have not disappeared. i often suffer headaches from the gasoline fumes that i carry back into the vehicle on my hands, clothes and feet from the gas spillage that occurs when i fill up. this problem seems to be very common amongst jeep owners based on the amount of forums i've found online.
During refueling at service station fuel spills from tank filler after the automatic fuel filler shutoff valve turns off (about a cup of fuel burps out). extreme fire hazard! problem has gone from once in a number of fills to every time! *tr
Every time the gas tank is being filled there is an eruption of fuel that comes out of the gas tank fill when the gas pump handle shuts off. even when manually holding the gas pump handle dispensing gas at a very slow rate, the gas tank fill still pours out gas when it reaches the full point and shuts off the pump.
When filling up with gas the jeep spews gas back out forcefully and about 4 cups fly out all over some times the nozzle clicks and some times it does not. i have had this jeep for over one year and this started happening for over a month now. 2008 jeep liberty 4x4. i called the dealer and they said no recall. this is very dangerous as the gas comes out fast and sprays. i don't think i should have to pay for this as it is a hazard and not a maintenance issue. *tr
2008 jeep liberty, about 37,000 mi started problem of gas pumps never shut off when tank nears full, has spilled all over myself, occurs every time any station, just waiting for a cigarette from somebody else to catch me on fire. *tr
During regular refill the car spilled fuel, around 250ml of it. in last 2 month it is a regular occurrence and poses a safety hazard for the car occupants along with the gas station. *tr
When filling gas tank with fuel, fuel spills out of the filler tube splashing on the side of the vehicle, the person pumping the fuel, and onto the ground. there is an obvious defect internal relating to the filler valve or fuel tank. this is extremely dangerous and should be evaluated as a safety recall. *tr
When filling the gastank as normal, gasoline overflows from the gastank. it spews a significant amount (approx 1/4 liter of gasoline). *tr
Every time i fill up my gas tank the nozzle does not trigger to release the shut off on the gas coming back out of the input which results in a lot of gas overflowing back onto my vehicle, the ground and my clothes. this happens even if i watch the amount of gallons being put into the tank and try and shut it off ahead of time. i have discussed this with other jeep liberty owners and have gone on line and have seen this to be a complaint of many. i also called jeep and filed a complaint with them directly. they say there is no recall for this type of thing happening. this can't be very safe having a quarter of a gallon of gas shooting out every time you fill up the tank. please help. *tr
When filling the fuel tank with gas, at the full point the tank shoot back about a quarter gallon of gas onto the ground and on the side of the car. this is without topping the tank off, as it happens at the point that the gas pump automatically shuts off. there is an extreme danger of this with gasoline being all over.
When putting fuel in the tank, it will burp out the fill line just as the pump is clicking off. cannot fill the tank without this happening and it occurs every time we fuel up. this problem started about 9 months ago and we have less than 40,000 miles on it now. no event led up to this starting, it just started when trying to fuel up. no matter how i try to fuel up, i get slosh back. this an environmental hazard besides the filling stations do not like having gasoline spilled in their stations. it is a 2008 jeep liberty 4x4. i had the car at brown dodge, chrysler, jeep today and they checked out the gas tank and could not find anything wrong. they did a thorough check and could not determine what was causing the problem. vin # [xxx]. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2008 jeep liberty. while parked and fueling the vehicle, the fuel tank overflowed. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician stated the fuel tank did not have anything to make the fuel stop. the manufacturer stated that the dealer said that there was no problem so they could not assist. the failure occurred three times. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 25,000.
Upon removal of fuel nozzle from the tank, after filling the tank, about two cups of fuel burp out of the tank onto the side of the vehicle and ground. happens at all stations, only way to avoid it is to not fill the tank or let the fuel nozzle sit for a minute or two before removal. i have returned vehicle to dealer with this complaint three times with no repair action taken by the dealer. *tr
When the tank is almost full the gas will come spewing out and go all over this happens all the time the nozzle does not shut off it not the station i fill at various stations. *tr
Every time i fuel up, if i leave it filling up automatically, gas spews out when it gets to full and goes everywhere. even if i am trying to watch the gallons and stop before it gets to full, it still spews everywhere. i thought this was specific to my vehicle, but i've now seen hundreds of reports on the internet regarding the very same issues with this year and model of jeep, plus many other years and models. *tr
Gas overflows from the gas tank every time i put gas into the car. this is a safety hazard. *tr
Fuel tank overflowing everytime fill up. it occurs everytime they fill up the liberty. *tr
I just returned from alexander chrysler jeep in franklin, tn 615-794-5000. they tried to blame a vacuum hose for letting gasoline fumes in the cabin of the 2008 jeep liberty to avoid a warranty fix. this is where the my health and safety complaint comes in. my wife has been complaining about being sick with headaches and stomach pain for months. originally we took the jeep in for "gas cap" warning on the odometer and engine light. nothing was found. today i took the jeep in an alexander found a clearly abraded or deteriorated vacuum hose that they said could allow the gas fumes into the cabin. my wife has been breathing this for months and if this is a common problem this exposes occupants to toxic fumes and risks an explosion hazard in the engine compartment. this needs to be investigated asap. if you can contact me asap i can let you see this hose as it sits. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2008 jeep liberty. while driving approximately 25 mph a chime sounded inside of the vehicle. the contact stated that the failure could possibly be related to the fuel indicator. whenever gasoline was dispensed into the fuel tank, the fuel sprayed out from the intake spout. the failure occurred on fifteen separate occasions. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer. the fuel tank required replacement. the failure mileage was 20,000.
