Problems with 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee ENGINE

On average, the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 65 620 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Car lost all power for steering and braking. car stalled. was at low speed 5-8mph turning to the right into a gas station driveway from busy roadway of speeds of 55mph. car went straight and rolled to a stop. grateful was parking lot and ditch in front of me and not the gas pumps or another vehicle as i had no control of the car stopping. i have twice had car to dealer for car going into limp mode. both in year 2016. same cylanoid each time.

Alternator failed while going down the freeway at 65 mpg, resulting in loss of steering and braking. alternator is 180 amp model. vehicle has only 80,384 miles. alternator failure occurred without any warning, and resulted in battery failure as well. total cost for two components: $900 plus labor through dealership.

Alternator gone with low mileage 3.6 engine 160 amp alternator. manufacture said they had a re-call p60 but my body style and vin. # didn't match. same eng. and alternator on the grand cherokees that were recalled makes no sense what that alternator is on. a bad alternator is bad alternator. vehicle was in motion when a wining noise and battery light came on,smelt hot. *tr

Car started normally however, once i began driving, a number of diagnostics errors were displayed on the screen. i started to smell as though something was burning so i returned home. a few minutes after that, the entire car went dead. no power at all. i could not even lock the door. i see that there was a recall p60 / nhtsa 14v-634 related to the alternator and the description of events that could occur with that, was pretty close to what i experienced this morning. however, when i researched this with fca, i was told that my vin was not a part of that recall. so now, i am thinking that i may have this defective equipment in my vehicle. i have to have the car towed to a local dealership for a diagnostic review but over the phone, the service rep believed that it sounds like an alternator/battery issue. i have also read numerous complaints from other jeep owners about similar problems. i want to be covered in case this turns out to be an issue where my vehicle should have been included in the alternator recall but was not. i was lucky that the failure occurred before i got away from my home and on the freeway. *tr

Nhtsa campaign number: 14v634000 / chrysler recall p60 already exists but that is for 160 amp mine is 180 amp, i think that is the only difference. my jeep died and would not start up again. all power was lost 100%, luckily my family and i were stopped at a gas station getting sodas. it sounds exactly like the same issue of the recall that is already out but also effects my jeep with the 180 amp alternator. according to chrysler that is the only difference in the two models. mine is a 2012 jeep grand cherokee with a 3.6l v6

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. while driving 55 mph, the engine stalled without warning. the dealer could not duplicate the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was 49,000.

I have a 2012 jeep grand cherokee limited, 5.7l engine. purchased the vehicle used. at approximately 60,000 miles (2015) the jeep begin to randomly stall while driving. it always happened within 10 minutes of leaving my house. fuel levels good, didn't matter if turning left or right. vehicle stalled, causing steering to lock. almost in 3 accidents. only remedy was to put it in park, jeep would start right back up. this happened in june, august and october. after october stall, i took to the jeep dealership. the dealership couldn't find anything unusual, and replaced the battery. the trailer taillights were not working and they recommend replace tipm. things were fine until september 2016. on sept 2 jeep stalls turning right, full tank of gas. on sept 6 - stalls slightly turning into suicide lane. back to dealership. dealership has it from 9/7-9-9. can't replicate it, and no errors come up. they do replace recall sun visors. sept 18 - stalls going straight on road. again, this is in the morning, and within 10 minutes of leaving my house. saturday oct 14. jeep stalls again around noon time. hadn't driven it since friday 1pm, the day before. full tank of gas. died while slowing down towards a red light, going straight. almost rear ended as a result. the dealership cant diagnose one thing that happens randomly. there is a plethora of complaints online regarding the tipm and alternator in this jeep. my vin isn't covered by the recalls, but it sounds like a tipm would remedy the situation. this vehicle is unsafe to drive, and chrysler isn't helping. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that while driving at 40 mph, the battery warning light illuminated and the vehicle stalled. the contact mentioned that all electrical functions failed. in addition, a burning odor was present. the vehicle was not able to restart. the vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the alternator and battery had failed and the engine control unit was damaged because of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not included in the nhtsa campaign number: 14v634000( electrical system). the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 100,400.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. while driving 25 mph, the battery light illuminated. the vehicle made a humming noise and the vehicle stalled simultaneously without warning. the contact stated that the battery and the alternator failed. the power windows would not roll down when prompted by the driver. furthermore, smoke appeared under the hood near the engine. the vehicle was towed to the dealer. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. the vin was invalid. the failure mileage was 57,459.

When slowing down or coming to a stop, the vehicle's engine will turn off and power steering will not work. in order to start the vehicle again, i need to completely stop, put it in park and start the engine. this has happened on the street and freeway. it does not happen constantly. i have had times where it happens 2 days in a row, once a week, and once a month. i have taken the vehicle to a dealer a few times already, but they have not been able figure out what the issue is. after having the vehicle at the dealer for over 1 month, i spoke to a senior technician that works at the dealer and he said it is a known issue. he told me that vehicles with the 5.7l engine and the push to start button have been having this issue and the issue starts around 30,000 to 50,000 miles and they are not sure what is causing the problem or how to fix it.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. while driving at various speeds, the vehicle stalled and the check engine light illuminated on the instrument panel. the failure occurred more than ten times. the dealer was unable to determine the cause of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 72,000.

Unexpected stall while driving. happened twice this week monday 4/25 while turning and 4/28/16 while driving in a 45 mph road (grand river, farmington hills). this touch has been previously serviced by dealer for recall notice and has not helped the issue at all!

About a month after purchasing my used jeep, i was coming to a stop on a city street and my jeep powered off completely. after taking the jeep in to the dealership they fixed the fuel pump relay, which was recalled ,and sent me on my way. since then my jeep has powered off 5 times (once while entering the highway, twice while exiting the highway, once while making a u-turn under the highway and once on a city street) each time while braking. i've had no power brakes or steering each time.

Unexpected engine stall out while driving.

I engaged the factory installed remote start in side my garage. within 3 minutes the engine was on fire. the fire originated just in front of the passenger seat but under the hood. i pressed the start button in order to turn the car off of auxiliary. flames engulfed the engine and my house.

Unexpected engine stall while driving on freeway. this is the second time experiencing unexpected stall out while drive after the recall was completed.

On the first of march, my wife and daughter were about to start their day in the usual way. she opened the garage door and used her key fob to remote start our 2012 jeep gc limited ( around 42k miles) ( factory installed remote starter) she walked away for less than 4 minutes and returned to see smoke coming from front passenger side of jeep. she called for me, and pushed the aux button to be sure the vehicle was off. i came running and despite my attempts to open the hood and beat back what quickly escalated into open flames i retreated to ensure my family's safety and to be sure the emergency responders were called. thankfully i was able to remove some potential fuel for the fire by removing our second car from the garage (also a chrysler) and securing the door between the house and garage. luck intervened when the flames destroyed the garage door assembly causing the garage door to fall and help remove some oxygen from the fire. eventually first responders arrived and were able to knock down the fire with foam . later the firemen pushed the jeep into the driveway to ensure it was doused. though the remote start may not be directly responsible for whatever arc sparked the fire, it's my belief that its use contributed directly to the conditions that conflagrated the situation. if the wiring harness is otherwise suspect i would not be surprised considering recent revelations on related models. the vehicle was just removed from the site today 3/9/2016 to copart facility, by insurance company for further investigation into the source of the fire.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. while driving approximately 5 mph, the engine failed without warning and would not restart. the vehicle was towed to a mechanic who diagnosed that the alternator needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000.

Vehicle stalls when applying brakes while decelerating. all power is lost and very difficult to steer or brake. the vehicle will restart when put back into park after drifting to a stop. this is a random problem that occurs 1-2 times every couple of weeks on average. the problem has been reported to jeep and has been at the dealer several times but they cannot reproduce the problem and there are no engine codes being generated. this is a very dangerous hazard and i have simply been lucky i have not been in a serious accident yet as a result.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. the contact received a recall notice for nhtsa campaign number: 19v813000 (electrical system). while driving various speeds, braking, or making turns, the vehicle stalled. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to len stoler chrysler dodge jeep ram (1001 baltimore blvd, westminster, md 21157, (410) 876-8800) and heritage chrysler dodge jeep ram owings mills (11212 reisterstown rd, owings mills, md 21117, (866) 771-8050), but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 75,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. while driving approximately 60 mph, the contact heard a noise from the engine compartment. the contact had to maneuver the vehicle to the side of the road. the check engine warning indicator illuminated followed by the entire instrument panel. the vehicle would not restart and was towed to an independent mechanic. it was diagnosed that the oil pump failed and the entire engine shut down. the vehicle was towed to the dealer and the same diagnosis was rendered. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was invalid. the approximate failure mileage was 119,000.

In the last 2 days, my 2012 grand cherokee has shut off while driving twice. on 10/29/2015 exiting the highway with my 2 year old daughter. the second time was the following day 10/30/2015 with my wife driving by herself. i have had the vehicle for about 30 days. i purchased it from the dealership. the vehicle shut off. there were no warning lights. the radio and lights all still worked. i had to coast to the side with no brakes, no power steering. once stopped i could put it in park and start it again without issue.

Vehicle engine shut off during right turn in busy intersection without any warnings. unable to turn or control vehicle. also the brake on lights come on in the consul during normal operation. based on other jeep model recalls, i believe the problem may be related to the tipm-7 module. the vehicle is a grand cherokee overlander 4wd. vehicle was able to be restarted and has not had another failure, however, this is an unsafe driving situation when the vehicle's engine dies while in motion in any road condition. maybe related to recalls p54.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. while driving at 65 mph, the engine stalled without warning. the vehicle did not restart. the vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired.the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 15v115000 (electrical system); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 36,000. the vin was not available.

Sudden stall out while driving at 45 mph (on telegraph road, redford, mi area- city street). this has occurred once after the recall was performed on the vehicle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that while driving at 40 mph, the engine stalled. the vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 15v115000 (electrical system). the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 21,000.

I received a recall notice for the above vehicle. when i brought it to seaview jeep in ocean nj i was advised that the earliest appointment is september 15. my concern is that your recall notice states that "an intermittent or failed fuel pump relay could cause the engine to fail while driving and cause a crash without warning." when i called chrysler (800-992-1997) i was advised by the representative on the phone that the car was "more likely not to start" and "you cannot control the service schedule of the dealership". my question/concern/complaint is that how can you send out a recall that clearly states the engine could stall while driving and cause a crash without warning yet make someone wait 2 weeks for the appointment. my expectation would be that for a safety concern such as this i would not have to wait 2 weeks for the recall to be addressed when you clearly state a crash could occur please advise how this will be addressed thank you [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. while driving 35 mph, the power steering and the accelerator pedal failed. the warning lights on the instrument panel illuminated. also, the vehicle started to emit smoke from the engine compartment and stalled. the vehicle was merged to the side of the road and was towed to a dealer. the technician diagnosed that the alternator and the battery failed and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 36,900.

This engine in this vehicle misses from time to time. i've told my dealer each of the last 3 times i brought in for service or for recalls. they have reset the computer and updated the software and say that if runs fine. i took the vehicle on a longer trip and it started missing during a late night drive to virginia. the missing was so bad i was loosing power. i am aware of the fuel pump recall that went out on this vehicle in april, but according to my dealer the parts are just becoming available now. i am on a wait list with no definite date to when my vehicle will be repaired even though i believe i have symptoms of a fuel pump failure. i am afraid to drive the vehicle and even more afraid to have my children or my wife drive it. i am amazed that this vehicle has had i believe 5 recalls and still fiat chrysler gets so much time to react and repair what appears to be a serious problem. i would have hoped our government would have held the new italian/fiat owners of chrysler to a hiring standard. fiats reputation for low quality cars was so bad that they had to pull our of the us and now they are back. why are they getting away with selling cars with defects that are potentially very dangerous and then allowed to have months and months to recall and repair them?

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. while driving approximately 40 mph down an incline, the vehicle stalled without warning and there was a complete loss of braking ability. the contact managed to stop the vehicle. hanlees chrysler dodge jeep ram of napa (333 soscol avenue, napa, california 94559, (707) 690-9600) was made aware of the failure and replaced the wiring harness and external fuel pump relay. the contact stated that the failure recurred twice. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 78,000. *tt consumer stated engine quit and loss of power steering and power brakes. updated 11/26/18*jb

Within the span of approximately 15 months, the engine has randomly turned off 8 times in the middle of driving. when this occurs, the car loses power steering and braking, making it difficult to control, aside from the fact that the car can not safely be moved to a safe emergency stop location. the car has been to the dealership numerous times, but with no solution. the dealer has performed all recalls and software updates, but these have not solved the problem. the dealer has stated that they cannot replicate the problem, so therefore cannot fix it. chrysler customer care was contacted and a case manager was assigned to the case. the case manager instructed the dealership to drive the car, which they had done before, to try to replicate the problem. they were unable to do so and the case manager has stated that there is nothing that can be done if the problem cannot be replicated. when asked what to do in the event the vehicle causes an accident, the case manager stated to contact him at that point and he will take the case "to the next level". in short, the car must be involved in an accident before chrysler is willing to do anything. at this point, we are not comfortable driving this car for which we are paying a lot of money and are not being offered any solutions. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. while driving approximately 25 mph, the battery warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the alternator needed replacement and the part required was unavailable. immediately after leaving the dealer and while driving approximately 35 mph, the seat belt indicator illuminated, the air conditioning and radio went off. the contact lost the steering and acceleration. the vehicle had to be towed back to the dealer. the vehicle was repaired using parts known to be included under an recall. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 41,000.

Will not turn over or start. bought this used with 26500 miles less than a month ago and the dealership that sold it to me never reported any recalls to this vehicle. this vehicle has six recalls to date and jeep is saying they have no permanent replacement parts.

Abruptly stalling while traveling on interstate highway. complete loss of all power, requiring to get off the road, place in park and re-start. re starts without hesitation. incident has occurred 5 different dates/times and the dealer has no fix stating they are unable to replicate the issue. most recent date 06/05/2015

on may 19, 2015 contacted dealer about (tipm) safety recall r09/nthsa14v-115. service manager stated to me that they could not fix (tipm) present time because they did not have part. service department stated to me they did not know when part would be available. gave service department my cell phone number and asked to be contacted (asap) about recall part (tipm). i think chrysler should be made by our government to buy back my 2012 jeep. this is the (4th) safety recall i have had on this jeep. dealer has not fixed recalls in a timely manner. i will never purchase a chrysler product again, i am sick and tired of unsafe junk coming out of fiat/chrysler. all consumers should be made aware of unsafe junk being put in chrysler vehicles. we in america deserve better respect from all automakers. i think my next vehicle will come out of russia!!!!! maybe they will understand how to produce a safe vehicle.

I returned my single axel motorcycle trailer to the gravel storage lot and backed it into it's space. with the engine idling i put it in park, exited the vehicle and disconnected the trailer from the vehicle. i got back into the vehicle to idle it forward a couple feet to allow clearance for the removal of the trailer hitch from the receiver. with my foot on the brake i shifted from park to drive. immediately upon being put in drive the engine accelerated to over 5,000 rpms and the vehicle lurched forward. i tried to shift back into park but hit reverse causing the vehicle to lurch backwards. i continued to push the transmission forward into park and shut off the engine. all this occurred with my foot firmly on the brake peddle. the incident lasted about three or four seconds. the rear tires spun in the gravel creating 3 inch deep divots. the vehicle is equipped with a 5.7l engine. my first thought was that the engine was going to explode. luckily there was no injury or property damage. the local jeep dealer inspected the vehicle and was unable to identify a cause.

Around may 1, 2015 received recall notice warning that defective tipm could cause a crash w/o warning. contacted jeep to schedule repair. told no parts available. reluctant to drive vehicle that "might crash w/o warning. parts are still not available for repair. have effectively lost use of vehicle for 10 weeks. jeep should be required to provide loaner or pay for comparable rental until parts are available and repair is made. jeep should extend warranty for the months vehicle is not safe to drive....updated 09/22/15 *bf

On april 27, 2015 i received important safety recall #r09/nhtsa 14v-115 stating that my vehicle had a defective fuel pump relay which could cause the engine to stall while driving and cause a crash without warning. in other words a serious possibly deadly crash could occur following the sudden shut down of the engine and power systems. to date, jeep/chrysler/fca repeatedly has told me there are no parts to repair the defect and no projected date for repairs.the dealer will not provide a safe loaner vehicle in the interim. so, i drive a deadly vehicle (deadly for myself and other drivers) for some indeterminate period of time. if the vehicle is unsafe as it is reported to be, it should be parked and the manufacturer and dealer should provide an immediate fix or an alternate vehicle. this situation is absurd. have we not learned anything from the gm ignition switch situation? apparently not.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 45 mph, the check engine warning light illuminated and the vehicle stalled. the contact was unable to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to athens dodge chrysler jeep ram (4145 atlanta hwy, athens, ga 30606, (706) 549-7555) to be diagnosed. the contact was informed that the transmission cooler, atf (automatic transmission fluid) needed to be replaced, there were multiple cylinder misfire, camshaft position sensor and the spark plugs needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. the contact stated that the failure recurred four times. the manufacturer was contacted but no further assistance was provided. the failure mileage was 38,705. the vin was not available.

I have received the #r09 15v-115 fuel pump relay notice and contacted dealer, parts still unavailable. exceeds a reasonable amount for time for repair. the dealer stated that parts needed were not available. the manufacturer had not yet determined a solution for the issue. the manufacturer was not made aware of the delay. the vehicle was not repaired. vehicle on multiple occasions fails to start.

The issue with my car was exactly the same as its sister product, 2012-2013 jeep wrangler, which was recalled for this problem - reference the nhtsa campaign id no. 13v234000. the same design flaw exists in the 2012-2013 jeep grand cherokees and these models also need to be recalled. problem: the power steering return line contacts and wears a hole in the aluminum transmission oil cooler line. there is no warning light or obvious low fluid levels, so an owner may not have any way to know when it happens. risk: such a condition can result in a loss of transmission fluid without the owner's knowledge, which may cause transmission damage and loss of function. in my case, there was no warning light or obvious low fluid levels. i continued to drive it until a regularly scheduled check up. i am unsure of whether there is any undetected damage, but i was told that i was only miles away from burning my transmission out and it shutting down. the repair cost was $849.27 at the local dealership. however, if it had shut down while driving on the highway, which i do often as a single mom with two daughters, the vehicle could have lost function while driving. why isn't this recalled already? it's not safe and it's the same exact problem as it's sister product that was already recalled!

2012 jeep grand cherokee. consumer writes in regards to lack of parts to fix sun visor vanity lamp wiring under recall. *smd the consumer stated the dash rattled, the sunroof had to be fixed on several occasions, the glove box, alternator and engine head were replaced. *jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. while driving 50 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning and smoke appeared under the hood. the vehicle was taken to dodge chrysler jeep ram city (4395 route 130s, burlington, nj 08016), but no codes could be generated. the vehicle was not repaired. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the battery, alternator, and power control module needed to be replaced. the alternator was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified and did not assist. the failure mileage was 65,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. on multiple occasions, the vehicle stalled while driving in reverse or while idling. the contact also indicated that the engine would not immediately start occasionally. the cause of the failures were not diagnosed nor repaired. the recall notice for nhtsa campaign number: 15v115000 (electrical system) was received in april of 2015. after contacting the dealer and the manufacturer on multiple occasions, the contact was informed that the parts needed to repair the vehicle were still not available and no estimated time for receiving the parts could be given. the failure mileage was 40,000.

The 2012 jeep grand cherokee check engine light was on and stalled then pulled over to side of street then restarted engine.took to dodge dealership -had major engine failure no-to low compression on lft cylinder head. is the fuel tank on this vehicle defective will it leak and explode/catch fire if rear ended? this vehicle was owned by dealership with open/active recall safety defects. should i be concerned with driving this vehicle. dealership did not disclose this when they sold the vehicle. how is this legal and allowed to get away with this dangerous vehicle. i don't want to put my family in it. maybe the dealership owner will put his family in it since he's selling defective cars. i just get another safety recall notice. this vehicle is an accident/fatality waiting to happen. the manufacturer/dealership should refund the purchase price or be criminally charged. i paid thousands of $'s, this vehicle is a total loss who going to buy it. *tr

Vehicle was brought in to dealer on 3/24/15 for stalling issues and other safety recalls. car had not started on at least 4 occasions up until 3/24/25. i was told the key fob batteries needed to be replaced and that may fix the issue. i paid to have both batteries replaced. on 5/4/15 i brought the vehicle back to the dealer because the not starting issue had become more extreme. it occurred 8 times since the 3/24/15 service and on one occasion it would not accelerate while i was driving on a highway. there was an extreme delay and suddenly the car reacted and lurched forward. this was the first time it had ever done this. additionally, on one occasion of not starting it continued to chug instead of just not reacting. dealer advised again that one of the key fobs needed to have a battery replaced (both were replaced the previous month) and that they didn't have parts for the safety recall. headquarters advised they would let me know in a few weeks or months when the parts would be available. the problems is rapidly getting worse and there are indications that there may be issues while i am driving it as well. i have asked for escalation and something even a temporary fix be done. no response from headquarters yet. *tr

The engine would want start. repeatedly attempted to start the engine with it seeming to turn over but not start. i had to wait several minutes and retry until the engine finally did start. this is the second occurrence of this sporadic engine start issue. previously, i took the car to a mechanic and they were unable to reproduce the engine start issue after many attempts. *tr

Jeep attempts to start when start is pushed. engine turns but will not start. occasionally it starts and then quickly shuts down. other times it starts and runs perfectly. *tr
