We have classified the 620 complaints from 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
I bought a 2012 grand cherokee used three weeks ago to the day when while driving the kids to the library saturday, suddenly all the warning lights (check engine, abs, traction control, brake, service power steering system etc.) buzzers, speedometer and transmission position started acting erratically. i pulled over and turned the car off. after a few minutes i restarted it and made it to my driveway when it did it again. i got it into my garage, disconnected the battery cable and let it sit until this morning. when i re-connected the cable and started the car only the check engine light came on. so the wife followed me to the dealer where we dropped it off. luckily it made the 8 mile trip without any other issues. then a few hours later the service dept. called me to say it was the tipm, appx. $950.00, not under warranty, and about 3 to 5 days to fix.
Jeep grand cherokee 2012 headliner fire. recall p36. headliner burst into flames while stationary in my driveway at home. had been driving the car 15 minutes prior to the fire starting. lots of smoke and noxious fumes coming from the headliner area above the windshield prior to the fire. thinking that this was probably an electrical problem, i was trying to disconnect the battery cable to prevent further electrical current flowing through the wiring. before i was able to disconnect the battery, flames erupted just above the driver's side front window. i was able to distinguish the flames with water from a garden hose and high pressure nozzle. the fire department was called and arrived within 10 minutes of the call. they cut out the headliner, cut the wiring and disconnected the battery cable. i reported this incident to chrysler on november 28. they sent an investigator to investigate the situation and submit a report. the report has been received by chrysler and it is my underdtanding it is now in their legal department, where it has been for almost a month. i have not heard anything from chrysler on this matter. i have contacted the jeep recall center at least 8 times over the last 30 days and am told by them that someone will be contacting me within 2 to 3 business days. it never happens. also, i had had the p36 recall service performed at the chrysler dealer on july 30, four months prior to the fire. i have now seen that there is a new recall notification from chrysler, december 24, on this same p36 vanity lamp wiring issue. the new recall specifically addresses 2011 - 2012 jeep grand cherokee's that have had the original p36 recall service performed. it appears they are trying to re-fix a problem the dealers did not fix the first time. who can i contact to get some help with this? so far chrysler is doing nothing to resolve this matter with me. thank you.
Vehicle was in motion when i noticed smoke coming out of the passenger vanity mirror area. i immediately pulled over, turned the car off, and called 911. the responding firemen had to cut a hole in the roofliner of the automobile in order to determine the location of the start of the fire, which they confirmed was the wiring to the visor. the direct cause of the fire was confirmed by service employees at the dealership the car was brought to, as well as investigative engineers for chrysler, as faulty wiring to the visor lighting on the passenger side of the vehicle. the cause of this incident is directly related to nhtsa campaign #14v391000, chrysler recall #p36. a recall for the visor wiring was issued, and repairs were made at the dealership. the fire in the vanity area of the automobile occurred roughly a month after the recall repair was completed. this leads me to believe that the solution for the recall issue is not sufficient and should continue to be investigated.

On 11/3/2015 at approximately 5:30am i was driving my 2012 jeep grand cherokee when i began to smell strong fumes which i suspected was coming from my car. moments later smoke began overwhelming the cab of the vehicle. i pulled over, got out and it was then i saw flames coming from the top of my car over the area of the driver's seat. the fire department came to put out the fire. the roof and driver's seat was damaged from the flames. inspections by my auto insurance and jeep confirmed the source of the fire was from wiring located on the driver side sun visor. this is related to a recall on the vehicle which i had addressed in october 2014 (paperwork attached as well as pictures of the damaged vehicle and fire).

In the last 2 days, my 2012 grand cherokee has shut off while driving twice. on 10/29/2015 exiting the highway with my 2 year old daughter. the second time was the following day 10/30/2015 with my wife driving by herself. i have had the vehicle for about 30 days. i purchased it from the dealership. the vehicle shut off. there were no warning lights. the radio and lights all still worked. i had to coast to the side with no brakes, no power steering. once stopped i could put it in park and start it again without issue.

While traveling down a paved country road at night, the indicator lights on the dashboard started blinking, the engine quit and the headlights went out. the hazard lights wouldn't work, so i was sitting in total darkness. the vehicle would not start. i could't get it out of park to move it off the road. the tow truck driver had to drag the jeep onto the bed of the tow truck because the wheels wouldn't turn. the service dept. at the dealership replaced the tipm and core return. they had no explanation as to why this occurred, which is very unsettling.

We are experiencing starting issues with the tipm module not recognizing the fob. it may take up to 10 tries to get into the vehicle and then just as many trying to get it started. it has had the r09 recall performed, but nothing has changed. the problem occurs when the vehicle is stationary, and you try to gain access to the vehicle.
I was driving on the highway when the red battery light lit up on my dashboard. within seconds of the battery light coming on the car's electrical system completely shut down causing the engine to stall. the diagnosis from the dealer mechanic was a shorted alternator which caused the powertrain control module (pcm) to short.
We notified shelor jeep about the december 2014 recall p60 /nhtsa 14v-634 promptly, but they continue to say the parts are unavailable. we notified them about the april 2015 recall r09 /nhtsa 15v-115, and they said the parts are also not available. both recall notices state the vehicle is dangerous --- vehicle shutdown or underhood electrical fire for the first recall and a crash for the second recall. jeep is not providing repair parts in anywhere near a timely manner! this vehicle is dangerous and must be repaired!
The alternator on the vehicle stopped working in middle of driving.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the vehicle was able to start after numerous attempts and there was an excessive vibration. the failure recurred two times. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v115000 (electrical system). the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the alternator was replaced. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 91,000.
This vehicle had the recommended recall repair for the sun visor completed on 5/19/2105. while driving the area above the rear view mirror began to emit smoke and within about 30 seconds flames erupted from the same area. the flames quickly spread towards the passenger side sun visor as i frantically looked for a safe place to pull over. it was 5:45am on a dark country road with no shoulder. i turned the vehicle off, exited the vehicle and called 911. the flames continued for at least another 15 minutes. when firefighters arrived they had difficulty stopping the burning though it was small because they could not access the battery for the vehicle (it is apparently located under the front passenger seat and unaccessible other than from under the vehicle.) firefighters had to completely disassemble the electrical system to the sun visors to stop the burning. they identified a screw and wire that were the cause of the fire. it was not until i returned home and researched the recall that i discovered that the screw and wire assembly is the cause of the fires. this recall repair obviously is not a resolution to the problem. had the flames spread to the driver side area i would have been injured or possible killed. had i had a passenger in the vehicle they could have been injured or killed also!!
Battery light came on then starting smelling smoke so pulled over shut car off. alternator was smoking so called for assistance. car was completely dead and had to be towed to dealer. told alternator failed and needed to be replaced. there is a recall number is p60 on this 160-amp alternator for jeep grand cherokee 2011- 2014 but for some reason that no one can truly explain my car is not covered (2012 jeep grand cherokee). it is the same exact alternator in my car as the recalled alternator.
This is the second time our headlights have burned out. also the tail light. the car isn't that old and is not driven but a few miles a year now we have retired. the ignition at different time will not start it will just keeps turning like it is not getting gas. i brought this to the attention at the dealers when the car was only 35,000 miles but they said we didn't have our foot on the brake totally, well it still does it at 48,000 miles and we do have our foot on the brake; it doesn't do it everytime, but it does it aleast once or twice a week. we are just sitting in the car ready to go somewhere' we realize the warranity is out but when we told them it wasn't. the first headlight went out the first 15,000 miles. we have owned cars for 10 years and lights have never gone out. can you help us with these problems?
There was a whining noise coming from the engine and a burning smell. took the car into be repaired and they informed me the car needed an alternator replacement. per the 10/8/14 nhtsa recall of certain models manufactured between 2011-2014, i would have expected that my car would have been included for the same repair, but i am being told i am not.

While driving vehicle started pulsating and then turned off. would then not start. ended up being a totally integrated power module failure which shut power off to the fuel pump. chrysler has already issued a recall but their "fix" does not seem to be adequate. instead of replacing the tipm with an improved design, they have developed a "band-aid" fix of bypassing the internal tipm relay.

Within the span of approximately 15 months, the engine has randomly turned off 8 times in the middle of driving. when this occurs, the car loses power steering and braking, making it difficult to control, aside from the fact that the car can not safely be moved to a safe emergency stop location. the car has been to the dealership numerous times, but with no solution. the dealer has performed all recalls and software updates, but these have not solved the problem. the dealer has stated that they cannot replicate the problem, so therefore cannot fix it. chrysler customer care was contacted and a case manager was assigned to the case. the case manager instructed the dealership to drive the car, which they had done before, to try to replicate the problem. they were unable to do so and the case manager has stated that there is nothing that can be done if the problem cannot be replicated. when asked what to do in the event the vehicle causes an accident, the case manager stated to contact him at that point and he will take the case "to the next level". in short, the car must be involved in an accident before chrysler is willing to do anything. at this point, we are not comfortable driving this car for which we are paying a lot of money and are not being offered any solutions. *tr

I was driving my 2012 jeep grand cherokee overland to work, when i smelled smoke. i immediately did not know where it was coming from. all of the sudden the shield covering my sunroof opened by itself. there was then visible smoke on the outside and the inside of my car coming from above my head and the headliner visor area. the smoke soon turned to flames just inches above my head on the drivers side. i had to pull over immediate and get a fire extinguisher, and put the flames out as they started to spread to the interior visor/ ceiling area. the fire department also had to come and they mentioned that it looked like it was an electrical issue as there were wires hanging down. the jeep had been towed back to the dealership and i am in the process of trying to figure out where to go from here.

I was driving on the highway when my battery light came on and moments later my wipers started to go on themselves along with my blinkers blinking and gps screen flashing, and every other possible light flashing. then my truck suddenly shut off and i had no brakes or power steering and lost control of my vehicle and couldn't stop or direct it to where i wanted it to go. luckily i was on the right lane and my vehicle veered to the right towards the grass and luckily there was enough grass to slow me to a stop. god was on my side! if i was on the left or middle lane it would of been a horrific incident because it was during rush hour. i was so scared of my life i would of crashed and would of been in a horrible accident. and thank god my kids wasn't in the car with me. but i have a problem because there is a recall about the exact problem that i'm having with is nhtsa campaign is number 14v634000 and the dealer is stating that my vin and vehicle does not apply to it! but i'm having the exact problem and chrysler needs to re check other vins because i'm 100 percent sure that's the recall. so please respond to me as soon as possible because i need this issue resolved or i will be contacting my lawyer and will fight this hard and will not give up and will give it my all to resolve this the right way. thank you! alfred adzemovic. also the dealer is security dodge in amityville new york
