We have classified the 41 complaints from 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee about STRUCTURE into the following categories.
The problem of defective door handles started when the car was about four years old and has gotten progressively worse. there have now been two incidents of door handles breaking off completely and there is soon to be a third. as of now both inside door handles for back seat doors are completely broken off making it impossible to exit the back doors from inside the vehicle unless you open the window and reach through to unlock the door from outside. the vehicle has power windows making it even more difficult to exit the rear doors of the vehicle in case of an emergency. the door handle on the driver's side is still functional but is badly cracked and a piece of plastic has now fallen off. it is now very close to breaking off. (it is only a matter of time until it is completely broken). the material that these door handles are made from is of very poor quality. i am worried that the driver's door handle may break now and in case of a fire or other emergency the driver and backseat passengers will be unable to exit the vehicle safely. your attention to this matter of safety is appreciated. *tr
The interior door panels (all 4) at the handle are cracking and breaking. many times the doors have to be opened from the outside. i contacted jeep and was told they have never heard of this problem, that i was the only person to report it. they told me it was normal wear and tear and that they were not responsible. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee unlimited. the contact stated that the interior door handle plastic support device had broken on all four doors. the dealer was notified and stated that the entire door panel needed to be replaced for $2,610. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 30,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the interior door handles fractured on all four doors. the doors could only open from outside of the vehicle. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the dealer stated that the interior door handles and panels needed to be replaced. the failure mileage was 60,000.
3 of the 4 interior door handles have broken off out of the handle housing. the 2 back doors are unable to open from the inside creating a serious safety risk. the drivers door is hanging on by a thread. still operable but handle housing is completely broken. even normal wear and tear should not cause this type of breakage on so many vehicles. chrysler should step up and rectify this issue before deaths occur and lawsuits begin. *tr
All four inside door handles have crumbled and fallen completely apart, a potential for a significant safety issue may occur. based on my research this issue seems to be very common for 2005-2007 jeeps and the cost to fix the problem is excessive, a national recall should be issued. *tr
My 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited has 68k miles and 2 out of the 4 interior door handles are broken. the other 2 that aren't broken are cracked and could possibly break anytime. i am fearful that in the event that something were to happen to the battery in the vehicle during an accident, my two children in the rear seats will not be able to get out. my vehicle is 6 years old but has very little miles on it and the handles shouldn't have broken so easily. there has been no abuse to the handles at all. there is no aftermarket repairs available for this vehicle that i can find and the only remedy is to purchase new door panels. like everyone else in the usa, i don't have the money to replace something like that, that shouldn't have broken in the first place. *tr
Last year i began noticing that plastic pieces were falling from the back cover of the interior door handles. i took the vehicle to the dealer to see if there was a recall on these vehicles since i consider that this was a safety issue. the handles are completely loose and i have to stick out my arm to open the doors from the outside. i don't even want to imagine what could happen if in an accident. the cost of repairing this is approximately $2,000 since it is necessary to purchase the interior door panel. *tr
2005 jeep grand cherokee. all 4 interior plastic door handle mountings have cracked. the two rear handles have fallen off completely. chrysler says they are not responsible. it is a safety hazard. *tr
I replaced the drive door handle after it cracked in 2009. now the rear passenger door handle broke off. it is now a safety violation as my daughter is unable to exit out the door due to a broken handle. again the passenger door is cracked at the handle. the count is now three of the four doors requiring replacement. i take great care of my car and this is a clear safety violation as the doors were made with substandard materials. i am now at 121,647 miles and would like to know if issuance of a recall to fix all of the doors will occur on the jeep grand cherokees made in 2005. thank you *tr
All four interior door handles are broken to varying degrees. this has been happening over several years. the door handle that is most intact is the driver's handle. ironically this car is typically only used by one person who uses that door handle. the car has approximately 75,000 miles. it has become a serious concern for our family. my husband will not take passengers for fear that if there would be an emergency or accident his passengers would be unable to exit the car. i have had multiple cars over the years and have never had one door handle break much less all four. jeep has made me believe that this is an unusual occurrence when i contacted them. online searches make me believe otherwise. *tr
2005 jeep grand cherokee limited with 3 of 4 door handles broken off. huge safety issue if vehicle involved in a crash or into water. no way to safely get all passengers out. we bought the vehicle used and was unaware of the issue and within weeks of buying the vehicle, the handles started to break and fall off. *tr
My jeep grand cherokee 2005 door handle broke with less than normal use. both front handle are broken. even one of the backdoor handle is broken and people rarely seat in the back. my car has only 37,900 miles. the jeep dealer wants to charge $1000.00 per handle in puerto rico. this is not normal and in my opinion could leave to people being trap in the car in case of an accident. *tr
2005 jeep grand cherokee limited automobiles have cracking and crumbling plastic surrounding the door handles. in case of fire or crash, you would not be able to open the door to get out of a deadly situation, due to cracking and crumbling plastic that was used in the door panels and hold the door handle. in many cases 2 inch large holes are next to the door handles due to plastic failure, and in some cases the entire door handle is no longer connected to plastic and is inoperable. this appears to be the result of a bad mix of plastic compounds, and/or improper pressures/temperatues in injection molding, during the original door panel manufacturing. chrysler has supplier recovery options to pay for this repair/replacement, but will not allow it unless excessive pressure is put upon them, instead pushing consumers to pay for the $2200.00 repair on their own. *tr
All four (4) of the door handles on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee are cracking and i am fearful that they will be breaking off soon. the handles and the supporting door handle housing are all cracking in the same location. i contacted chrysler (case #[xxx]) and jeep (case #[xxx]) and have been unable to receive any repair assistance even though this is a manufacturer defect. since the defect is in the housing unit of the interior door panel, the cost to replace the housing is prohibitive to most owners since the entire door panel must be replaced. the dealer states it is ~$800 per door to fix. due to the safety issue of being unable to exit the back seat area from the inside without difficulty, i am fearful of allowing my 14yr daughter, grandkids, or anyone else of riding in the back seat. if an accident were to occur, they would be unable to safely exit the car from the inside. the damage to the door handles and/or frames are not due to normal "wear and tear" or any outside circumstance. although i am just now reporting this, i did not initially recognize it as a defect when the problem first occurred with the first door (rear driver's side) in 2009. this is a safety hazard caused by defective manufacturing. i am reporting this hoping that a recall will be made by chrysler before someone is seriously injured and/or killed. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
My 2005 jeep grand cherokee interior door handles have all broken loose from their door panels making them inoperable. i have inquired about any assistance from the manufacturer since the problem seems to have been caused by faulty material and really poor design. the answer has been negative. i am concerned that in an emergency it would be impossible to exit the vehicle if i were not able to get the windows down to use the exterior handle.i feel a recall is definitely in order since the price to replace these panels is exorbitant ( $700.00 to $800.00 each) and no assistance is being offered through the manufacturer. there are multiple cases in your file regarding this issue and a huge amount of documentation from customers on the internet!!! please help all of us rectify this dangerous situation. please don't wait until an injury or death is reported that was caused by this problem !! *tr
Lo compre en el ao 2009 marzo quiero saber si es legal la camioneta. *tr
Rear door pockets completely cracked and broke out, making it impossible to open doors from the inside. front door pockets are cracked and broken also but not completely yet. purchased vehicle used from dealer on december 2008 at 33000 miles vehicle is in excellent condition accept for door pockets. contacted manufacture on safety issue and made complaint over phone, never received a response from manufacture.
I am the owner of a 2005 jeep grand cherokee and all but one of the door handles on the inside panel have fallen out and it is just a matter of time before the other one does because it is already cracking. this is a real safety issue as if anything happens the doors cannot be opened from the inside. i have read that this is real common because of the material used to make these doors and has happened to a whole lot of people. the dealerships want like $700 a door to replace. *tr
All four inner door handles have broken and fallen out. none are operable. we have to let down the glass to exit. *tr
I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited. the vehicle has less than 60,000 miles. on the engine hood cover, the original and existing gas operated hood support does not hold. there have not been very many opening and closings of the engine compartment. the hood slams down and could cause a personal injury. *tr
I own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. i have read over 500 complaints about the obvious manufacturer's defect associated with the interior door release systems contained in this vehicle. i must assume that "we" are waiting for a number of deaths before this evident flaw will be recalled. i am now down to one working door on my grand cherokee. other than that, my jeep is in great condition, for i am very particular about maintaining my vehicle properly. after hundreds of jeep grand cherokee owners have submitted official complaints, wouldn't it be safe to say that these complaint represent thousands, if not tens of thousands of incidents? let's face it... most vehicle owners will live with this, or pay to have it repaired, but few actually submit a written complaint. i have been quoted a price of $700 per door to have these door release systems replaced. as a single mother, i don't happen to have an extra $2,800 to pay for something that should be taken care of by the manufacturer. one day... heaven forbid... someone (hopefully not a child) will be trapped inside a jeep grand cherokee during an emergency. only then, i assume, will a recall be issued. what a shame. this particular vehicle has been on the road for six years, and complaints are rolling in. this is horrible and extremely dangerous. please investigate!!! *tr
The interior door handles are broken and i have to open the door with a strap. i consider this to be a safety hazard. *tr
On my jeep all four door panels are broken the plastic is too cheap i think it's a safety issue that needs to be fixed by daimler chrysler ,jeep if there is a recall on this items or a what to fix them for a cheaper price than the dealer price which is $700.00 per door please let me know because the handles are just laying in a black hole on the panel my email is[xxx]thanks information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
2005 jeep grand cherokee interior door handles inoperable from the inside of the vehicle. the 2 back door handles have fallen off. we took this up with chrysler and was told this is not under warranty. this is a quality/design flaw and a huge safety issue. chrysler needs to recognize this and re-call and fix this issue. we then took our jeep into a dealer to get it fixed and paid $736 for one door panel. the only panel that could be fixed since the rest are on back order ??? we are left with 2 doors that don't operate and one cracked door handle that eventually will fall off too. please help address this concern with the 2005 jeep grand cherokee. thank you *tr
All 4 interior door latches broken- 3 will not open from inside!!!!!!! will happily join any class action suit! 3rd jeep owned but now last one! *tr
The interior panel handles are all broken, i called the dealer and they said this would cost around 1,400 dollars to replace each frontside handles, by doing research over the internet i've notice that this is a very common defect on this vehicles, at this moment chrysler doesn't want to take any responsibilities on this defect. i am worry that in case of an accident my family and me could get stock inside the car. *tr
Indoor housing for door handles broken on all 4 doors....i replaced drivers side handle 2 years ago, now it is broken along with others....so 3200 to replace all 4 doors panels...internet and this site full of similar complaints, defective material or design....i have always had jeeps and still buy jeep, but this was a problem that they didn't take care of like they should have...unsafe to not be able to open door from inside. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that all the door handles were cracked and the handles moved around inside of the panel. the contact stated that this was a recurring failure. the vehicle was driven to a dealer for diagnostic testing. the technician stated that the parts were cracked on the passenger side. the passenger side door handles were replaced. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was unknown. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
All interior door handles have cracked and become loose. one passenger side rear door handle completely fell off. dealer said $2,000 to fix all doors, handles have not been repaired. cannot exit car without rolling down the windows and opening doors from the outside. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact propped up the hydraulic hood in order to disconnect the battery. the hood came down abruptly onto the contact's head and back. the contact sustained head injuries. the current mileage was 34,315 and failure mileage was 34,260.
I'm the original user of a jeep grandcherokee laredo,2005, with a 64,000 miles. the hazard is that all(4)interiors doors handles brokedown due to cheap plastic materials and because they made the door handles as an integrate part of the complete door panel.this is a safety hazard because the door opens only from outside, putting all occupants life jeopardized. this is not something of heavy use or due to behavior of the occupants. as a fact this car was my company car so no many people was sitting in the back seat. the cost of this four panels(including the handles) is above the $2,000.00. i saw other complaints in other sites about the same problem including people who bought these suv's in europe. i can send you photos if you considered necessary and the details of the car identification numbers if you may think is necessary to continuing finding the solution of this hazard. *tr
Water pours in through the a pillars and where the garage opener is. this only happens in the winter months, when the temperature is really cold. this happened 2 or 3 times last winter (2006) and now it has happened 3 times in the last 4 days. the pattern is when the vehicle has snow on roof and it gets really cold then warms up a little the water pours in. the carpet is soaked. i can hear the ice moving around in the a pillars when this happens. the dealer can't simulate this. they put the vehicle in a room and run water over it. i think it has something to do with the water freezing inside and expanding then when it warms up it just pours inside the vehicle. the dealer checked the sunroof and said there was no problem. i think it could be the gaskets for the luggage rack could be cracked or loose, thus water getting in. i can't explain why it doesn't do it when it just rains. *tr
Door handle broken, unable to get out after an accident. *tr
Door handles disentegrated unusable. *tr
I have been dealing with this for years in my 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the door handles on the inside are all broken. one in the back is completely broke off and the 2 in the front are hanging by a wire. this is a very dangerous issue and i get nowhere when trying to talk to jeep or even jeep dealers. recently i saw online many more people with this problem and someone even said jeep agreed to a $50 copay in 2010. i brought my jeep into the dealer when it was still covered under my extended warranty bought from jeep when i bought it in 2006, and they told me it is cosmetic and not covered. when calling jeep i was told nobody has died so no recall and i am responsible for replacing these door handles. you can not replace the handles only, you have to replace the whole panel and total cost is around $3000. with the amount of people having this issue it is unbelievable that it is not being addressed on a large scale. if one of us gets killed from being trapped inside of their jeep because the door handles are all broken they will have a huge price to pay. i am down to one handle, and extremely unhappy! please help!!! *tr
Re: 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited - interior door panels (where door handle is attached) are cracking and falling away resulting in the door handles no longer being attached to the door. this requires, at times, the door to be opened from outside the vehicle. chrysler will not replace as the vehicle is out of warranty. the dealership wants $700 + labor (per door) to repair something that is obviously a manufacturing/material defect and safety hazard. *tr
Tl* - the contact stated that the 2005 jeep grand cherokee only has 1 strut to hold up the hood. the strut is on the right hand side. the hood has fallen on him while he was under the hood checking the fluids. the contact stated that the hood came down across his back, he was not injured at the time. this failure happened over 10 times. the contact stated that the hood has also fell at the chrysler dealer while getting serviced. the dealer has ordered a new strut for the vehicle. *ak
Vehicle had bird droppings on hood. washed off same day and ate right through paint down to metal. jeep will not cover repairs. noticed that clear coat either does not exist on this vehicle or is very thin. noticed other spots where bird droppings have left marks on paint and chips in paint all over vehicle. i have owned several vehicles and never have seen paint this bad. *jb
***several problems with 2005 jeep cherokee laredo 3.7*** just after purchasing this vehicle in feb 2006 dealer had to replace the air conditioner because it would only work at one speed. after that the transfer case and shifter had to be replaced, next the windshield began to leak molding the carpets, next the steering wheel began making loud clicking noise when making deep turns, vehicle also has severe hesitation when going up hills, now my mechanic says there is transmission fluid all under the vehicle. have also bumped my knee against the key resulting in stalling. worst of all only getting 12-14 mpg!!!!!!have owned jeeps in the past, very unhappy with this one. *jb
Brand new 2005 jeep grand cherokee laredo, right front passenger door was being opened, a gust of wind caught the door and hyper-extended it causing it to be misalinged. the next time the door was opened, the front lip of the door caught on the rear of the right front fender and caused a dent in the fender approximately 6 inches long and 3 inches wide. to properly fix damage, right front fender was replaced and painted, right front door was repaired and repainted, hood was repainted to blend with new paint on fender and door. total cost of repairs was approximately $1,300. important to note, no other damage to any other vehicles, property or people was caused by this gust of wind. it happened in a grocery store parking lot and there were lots of other people, cars and property around. nothing else was damaged and the gust of wind seemed very minor. in 30+ years of driving i have never experienced damage to a door due to a wind gust nor have i ever heard from anyone i know of receiving damage to a door due to a wind gust. this appears to me to be a door hinge design flaw. *nm
While driving agt 40 mph and above if one back window is open the car starts to shake. by the time you reach 60 mph the shaking is out of control. i went to the dealer and he claims this normal wind rattle. i disagree. *nm
I attempted to install a car seat for a 3 year old child in the back seat of my 2005 grand cherokee. however, the head rest interfered with proper installation of the car seat. the head rest would not allow the seat to be tightly mounted to the back seat of the car, but rather held the child seat out by about 2-3 inches. this prevented the seat from being safely installed. it is very difficult to remove the head rest from this vehicle. i had to take it to the dealer to get this done. but when the head rest is removed, there are two "prongs" that protrude out, making the situation even more dangerous. i called chrysler to get advice on what to do. they said go to the dealer, but the dealer could not solve the problem either. i then called chrysler again, and they insisted this is not a problem. but it is! daimler- chrylser needs to address this problem. it is a design flow. at the very least they should provide a list of infant car seats that can be properly installed -- if any such seats exist. *jb
Car purchased 6/20/05 with 0 miles. car taken to repair 7/11/05 with 450 miles. some where on the residential streets a pebble went into the car and damaged the air compressor. freon has been leaking since the impact. the service dept can not pin point just how long the freon has been leaking but all i know is that i am 6 months pregnant and have 2 other little girls that have been inhailing this freon. the car damage is not covered under waranty since this is a road hazard. however, the car is designed to drive through mountains and rocky roads. there is a designer fault since the new cars do not have a protection grid /net to prevent debris from doing such damage. the older models do have this. when i asked the service dept of prevention devise they only stated that the car was designed this way and that i am not the only person with this simular problem with this new jeep laredo 2005.
Door panel handles cracked on all 4 doors, unable to exit the vehicle from the back. passengers are unable to open door. plastic cracked and finally gave way in the rear of vehicle, front doors are cracked and very close to giving way. huge safety issue here. defected materials, date indeterminable of issue based on defects. *tr
Within weeks of the purchase of this vehicle on 1/06, paint on bumper began to have small chip marks. as of 7/06 i have noticed more chip marks and also a rub mark where the paint has just rubbed off easily, with no structure damage to the bumper. also paint nubs ( bubbling) around door handles and paint is coming off of driver door handle at creases. it seems as if paint is poorly applied. *nm
