Recently reported STRUCTURE problems on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

My 2005 grand jeep cherokee limited has defective door panels. 3 door panels have holes around the handle, 1 is completely broken and is will not open the door. the 4th door panel is cracking. soon all four doors will not be abled to be opened from the inside, causing a safety issue.this car is in mint condition with only 26,000 miles on it. this is a defect, not wear and tear!! *tr

Jeep 2005 door handle housing cracked on all 4 doors. car has been well maintained. i replaced 1 in 2010 (passenger front at a cost of $700). now the other 3 are cracked and 2 inoperable. this is a major safety issue as the doors must be opened from the outside. *tr

Plastic panels that hold the door handles are cracking and breaking, causing the door handles not to work. after the door panels break we cannot open the doors from inside the car. at this point we have one door completely inoperable, one with plastic broken and missing, and two where the cracking has started. *tr

Interior door handles are broken. this is very dangerous because you cannot get out of the car - especially in an emergency. the rear door handles have been very rarely used, and still have broken. this is definitely a mfg defect that they are avoiding. very dangerous and unacceptable that they (jeep) are not recognizing this issue. *tr

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee and i really have a concern to whom or where i could file a claim with a problem with my interior door handles. the reason why i'm complaining is that all the 4 interior door handles cannot by opened from the inside as usual because all of them are broken and with the plastic cracked, made in pieces and holes where the plastic has been missing. most of the time i have or the passengers have to open the door from outside. please help me in this or give me some advice. what i have to do or where i could find information to replace them. thanks *kb

There is a defect in the plastic used to make the door panels on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the plastic around the door handle latches is breaking apart and crumbling. all 4 doors are having the same issue of the plastic failing. if the plastic continues to break apart the door handle will fail and you will not be able to open the door. this is safety issue which could prevent myself or passengers from exiting vehicle in case of an emergency. dealership was contacted and informed of the defect. dealership stated there was no recall and they had not come across said problem before. i informed them that it was obvious defect since all the doors were degrading at the same time. dealership stated that my only option was to buy new door panels for $2600. my research shows that this is not an isolated incident and there have been many complaints of the defect door panels. this is a serious safety issue and chrysler needs to recall the door panels on this model. *tr

Unsure of the specific incident date. the failure is the plastic molding around the inside door handle for 3 out of 4 doors. the plastic has broken, exposing the inside mechanics and allowing for the handled to extend further than necessary. this makes exit questionable as the door handle is only holding on to the latch without any place for leverage. in the event of an accident/emergency, if the door was to be involved it is possible the handle would suffer further damage and be unable to operate. there has been nothing done about replacing the part. it costs roughly $700 per door to repair. *tr

3 out of 4 inside door handles broken due to cheap plastic used. unable to get out of jeep from the inside. if there was an accident, you could be trapped inside. could cause death or injury. dealership charging over $2000 out of pocket to fix when it was caused by faulty, brittle plastic. unsafe to drive with my kids in the back seat. *tr

All interior door handles inoperative due to engineering defect. *tr

I own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee and all of my door handles are broken and/or missing. this causes massive concern for the safety of any passengers in my car. you cannot operate the doors from the inside and if we get into a wreck, they would be unable to get out of the vehicle. i have researched this problem online and it is ridiculous that the parts are so cheap and jeep will not do a recall to fix the problem. most consumers do not have $2000.00 to have the doors repaired with the same cheap plastic to end up in the same situation again. please jeep, do something about this problem asap!!!!!!!! *tr

My 2005 jeep grand cherokee has had all 4 door handles crack and 1 has completely broken off. after researching the internet, i have found that this is a common occurrence on this vehicle, and seems to be a major safety concern. in any occasion where exiting the vehicle quickly is necessary, broken door handle(s) can risk injury and death to occupants. this is not a minor issue, just like an emergency exit in a building, it can be potentially fatal. nhtsa owes the people of the united states of america the common courtesy to acknowledge that this posses a huge risk for it's citizens. please protect our right to safe vehicles, and the responsibility of auto makers to remedy any errors in design that pertain to human safety! *tr

I own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited hemi , it only had 26,000 miles on it. all four of the interior door panels have now broke where the door handle is attached. the drivers door panel has broke the worst and the door handle is not even attached to the panel anymore , which has become a safety concern. i have contacted my dealer and turned in a claim for customer complaints. after 3 or 4 weeks they contacted me to say it is out of warranty. that is precisely why i called them and explained my situation. surely they can do something to alleviate this situation , all four door panels is going to cost around $3,000 dollars. i have read numerous reports about this problem on several different sites on the internet. the whole interior panel is connected to where the door handle is situated. meaning you have to replace the whole door panel. please help, this is definitely a big defect and a costly one to us the consumer. any help to this matter or a fix to this situation would be hugely appreciated. *tr

On approximately december 8, 2010 the plastic around the inside left rear door handle cracked while my daughter was opening the door from the inside. after that the handle was loose and i frequently had to open the door from the outside to let her out of the jeep. around july of 2011 my father tried to open the door from the inside and more of the plastic surrounding the handle broke off and the handle fell down inside the door panel. now the door cannot be opened at all from the inside. this is a major safety issue. the door handle was never handled in a rough manner and should never have failed like this. *tr

In my 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited i began to notice the plastic that the door handle was connected by began to crack, within a few weeks the entire door handle was no longer working leaving me to have to open the window to open the door from the outside. this is a vehicle safety issue, due to a supplier's defective plastic resin mix, not a warranty issue. in case of a crash or fire, a passenger or driver might not be able to get out of the vehicle and could be trapped in and could die, my passenger side is also hanging very loosely and soon will not work as well. the door handle is not a separate part as in most vehicles so the entire door handle must be replace. the dealer charges more than 800 dollars to fix a door piece, and the part will just be replaced with another door panel with the exact same plastic that will break eventually again. *tr

On the drivers door and the right passenger door, the plastic of the panel supporting the interior door handle has broken leaving the handle unmounted and useless. obviously, this is a safety hazard as it takes more time to egress the vehicle in an accident. *tr

All the door handles on this vehicle are cracked and broken and two of them no longer operate from the inside! *tr

On the drivers door, the plastic of the panel supporting the interior door handle has broken leaving the handle unmounted and useless. obviously, this is a safety hazard as it takes more time to egress the vehicle in an accident. *tr

The inside plastic that mounts the door handles continues to crack and break away leaving the handles unmounted. this must be a safety hazard because any point in time the handles could stop functioning leaving the driver and passengers trapped inside. once this plastic broke away it was almost impossible to open the door from the inside.

My 2005 jeep grand cherokee door handles inside are breaking. they are plastic and seem to be cheaply made. they just start to crack and after a few months the whole handle is gone. jeep needs to issue a recall or look into this issue before someone cant get out of there vehicle in a emergency. *tr

One of the door handles on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee has broken off and is unusable. the other three are cracking and i am fearful that they will be breaking off soon. the handles and the supporting door frames are all cracking in the same location and the handles then fall off. the manufacturer has been unwilling to even discuss the issue. the original dealer is out of business and the local dealer states it is $680 per door to fix. parts to fix the door handles are unavailable for sale outside the dealerships. due to the safety issue of being unable to exit the back seat area from the inside, i am fearful to allow anyone to ride in the back seat at this time. if an accident were to occur, they could be unable to exit the car from the inside. i see there are numerous complaints posted as well as a website where hundreds of people are stating the same exact issue with their 2005 jeep. there was not any outside circumstances that caused this defect. 99% of the time i am the only person in the vehicle. the dealer states it is ?normal wear and tear?. what a crock my door handle gets used 10 times a day and it has failed "yet" this is an unacceptable safety hazard. i hope you will address as a recall before someone is seriously injured because they cannot get out of the vehicle. *tr

Rear passenger door handle broke from door panel causing child to not be able to open door from inside. the handle is not dangling there from wire. the other doors are showing signs of spider cracks, eventually leading to breakage. *tr

Rear passenger door handle broke from door panel causing child to not be able to open door from inside. the handle is now dangling there from wire. the other doors are showing signs of spider cracks, eventually leading to breakage. *tr

Front passenger door handle suddenly cracked/busted upon getting out of the car. later, the other three door handles cracked/busted. recently, i found it difficult to get out of the car because the door would not open due to the busted handle. *tr

2005 jeep grand cherokee interior door handles are defective. passenger side door handle has completely broken due to the cheap plastic and the driver side door handle has almost failed as well. i am afraid that in an emergency, i and my passengers might not be able to exit the vehicle. i've been reading online and this appears to be a very common issue, but chrysler refuses to fix the doors. they want $700 plus to fix each door handle, but you can't even get one because they are on back order. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the rear passenger side door failed to open. the failure occurred on multiple occasions. the dealer stated that the door handles needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 90,000. updated 01/23/15*lj updated 08/28/2017*ct

Over the past year, both driver's side door panels on my 2005 grand cherokee (limited) have broken. pieces around the opening handle have snapped off. the front driver side door is still usable, but the rear driver side door handle is just hanging there. these were not damaged through abuse, instead just routine use. i have not contacted my dealer as i have seen on line that most people have been unsuccessful in getting their warranties to back their claim and i don't have a lot of faith in my local dealership to go out of their way for a warranty claim. hopefully the nhtsa can make daimler / chrysler / jeep / fiat, whoever step up to the plate and repair what has been pretty much proven to be a design flaw. *tr

I have two 2005 jeep grand cherokees. all the inside door handles are cracking and some are completely destroyed to the point you can not open the door from the inside. which in the event of an accident, no one would be able to exit the vehicle. it's obviously a problem with the plastic being too thin/brittle. it's all over the internet and there are even youtube videos. *tr

2005 grand cherokee laredo the door handles are made of a defective plastic and brakes into several pieces living the door handle unable to open the doors from inside. for people who have children this is a safety issue because if you are in a wreck or in case of a fire the passengers in the back seat is unable to open the door. i believe jeep should recall the door handles at no cost to their customers. i have a 2005 jeep and 3 of the 4 handles have already broken. i have checked into fixing the problem and the cost would be $400.00/door and this is unacceptable do to the fact the cost of vehicles are at a record high you should have to replace door handles ever 5 years. i have always drove a chevy. or ford product and have never experienced such a unacceptable problem. i am starting to doubt my decision on purchasing a jeep product. *tr

I own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the interior door handles have broken and there is no way to replace just the door handle. you have to replace each door handle. and that cost about 2000.00 a piece for each door panel.*tr

The interior door handles, all 4, broke off, at almost the same time. there is a common manufacturers material defect, as the door handle "pocket" is made out a brittle plastic, and they just shattered, or cracked simply by using the interior door handle to exit the vehicle. this is dangerous because in an emergency, one would not be able to exit the vehicle if the door handle breaks off in your hand. *tr

2005 jeep grand cherokee plastic surrounding the driver side door handle cracked and fell apart. it was taken apart and glued back together. this lasted a short while and it then broke again. it is not an easy fix. the whole door panel for $600 dollars must be replaced. at times the window must be rolled down to open the door using the outside handle.in case of an electrical failure in an accident you would not be able to exit the vehicle.this is definitely a safety issue. many jeeps have had all 4 door handles break. this is poor construction. chrysler needs to step up and recall and fix this issue and not by replacing it with more cheap plastic. *tr

Two of the four interior door handles on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee are broken off and unable to open the door. this is a huge safety problem, if there were an accident it would be impossible for two of the passengers to be able to exit the vehicle. they were not broken from damaging actions, they simple have just broke from everyday use. *tr

2005 jeep grand cherokee limited edition interior door handles breaking off. 3 of the 4 door handles are unable to open the doors in case of an emergency. due to the number of the same complaints about this safety issue, jeep obviously has a manufacturing defect that needs a recall issued. *tr

3 of my interior door handles are completely broken off. i was told by the dealership that my extended warranty did not cover the interior door handles. the total cost to repair the 3 handles is $2,100.00. i cannot afford to fix these handles. i researched online to see if others had the same issue. as a matter of fact, on this site alone, there are numerous accounts of people all over the country that are having the same issues with their jeep grand cherokee's. why isn't there a recall to fix this issue? do you know what the end result could be if someone is trapped in their vehicle after a serious accident, because the door handles are inoperable? i can see if maybe a few people we're complaining, but it's not. this is faulty equipment by the manufacture and chrysler should own up to their mistake. if safety is of your concern, you should put this at the top of your list. thank you for your time. *tr

The front passenger door handle on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee has broken off and is unusable. , the plastic supporting the interior door handle has broken, leaving the handle unmounted and useless the other three are cracking and will be breaking off soon. the handles and the supporting door frames are all cracking in the same location and the handles then fall off. the manufacturer has been unwilling to accept responsibility for the issue. they declined my claim with my 100,000 mile 7 year maximum care upgrade extended warranty. at first they offered (then retracted) a goodwill gesture of covering all but $500 for the replacement. they do not consider this a safety issue! this is an unacceptable safety hazard. i hope you will address as a recall before someone is seriously injured because they cannot get out of the vehicle.

Jeep grand cherokee interior door panel broke & door will not open from inside the vehicle causing a safety hazard. this is the 2nd door handle that has broken in the vehicle. in searching to fix the back door, i found an article showing that chrysler was aware of a resin problem with this vehicle. i can find a safety recall for the locks. *tr

2005 jeep grand cherokee limited. both front and rear passenger door panels have broken and cracked. the pfront passenger door handle on the inside is now inoperable. it is now permanently inoperable on a vehicle with only 31,000 miles on it. so far the dealer claims no recalls are available and the price to replace is about 800 per door. *tr

2005 jeep grand cherokee, 42275 miles, the door panels on the rear doors are broken at the door handles and the doors cannot be opened from the inside. additionally, both front door panels are cracked at the door handles and more than likely will break soon. have inquired with local body shop and new door panels are approximately $450 each and are of the same design. *tr

2 interior door opening handles breaking/failing: front passenger door totally inoperable. driver door supporting interior is breaking and back doors cracking and breaking without anyone using them, my vehicle is in impeccable condition. ***this is a dangerous safety issue if handles break or are inoperable in certain emergency situations, passengers may not be able to exit the vehicle, causing serious injury or death!*** manufacturer charge to replace/repair handles is prohibitively expensive; hope you will address as a recall before someone is seriously injured because they cannot get out of the vehicle in an emergency situation. *kb

Interior door handles on front passenger and rear driver side have both failed. the handle pivots on brittle plastic and it cracks. *tr

Back driver side interior door handle can off when a passenger was trying to exit. this door is hardly ever used. *tr

2005 jeep grand cherokee limited hemi engine, door panel cracks leaving handles broken off in rear, two front door handles show signs of severe cracks, loose. contacted local dealer who said they would cover a portion of the replacement, no recalls were issued etc..this vehicle on occasion has children as passengers and i would think chrysler would be concerned for the safety of passengers with door handles that are broken. it appears that the material that these parts are made of are very low quality and i am shocked that the manufacture has not stepped up to the plate and paid for the replacement. after what i have read on blogs and on line about the same complaint from other jeep owners, this makes me consider not buying another chrysler product in the future. *tr

Normal door use, door handles cracking then breaking. worried about safety. nothing done to repair. three out of the four are broken. *tr

2005 jeep grand cherokee door panel plastic has become damaged around the door handles causing the handles to become inoperable. both rear door handles have broken and become unusable requiring the person in the front to exit the car and open rear doors. both panels in the front are cracked and will most likely fail in a short period of time rendering the car useless. *tr

Tl* the contact owns 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that all four interior door handles have cracked and the doors could not be opened from the inside. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who indicated that all panel assemblies needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 88,000.

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the interior door handles started breaking from the plastic they are attached to about a year ago.the drivers door is completely broken i do not have any warranty left on the car and looked into fixing and found out that one door alone the part would be $660 before labor. i have all four doors that need to be fixed. i called to speak to the dealership and told them that this was a serious problem and believe the doors are made of cheap or defective parts and was told they could not help me because of the miles on my car. they told me they would not do anything about helping on the costs, i have heard that other folks have been helped with 50% of the costs. i know that there is a serious problem because i also have a vw and volvo and they are near the same age and do not have anything wrong with them. the safety issue is that the only way someone can get out of the car is to put the window down to open from the outside. they are electric windows so if in an accident it could become tragic. i believe that this should be a recall item for any 2005 vehicle no matter how many miles on the car. i have seen sooo many complaints on the 2005 model having this issue. it is a serious problem that should be required to be fixed by the company. the car has had normal wear and tear. thankyou *tr

The door handles are disintegration. the plastic is so brittle it snaps under very little pressure. this is happening on all four doors. i was told by the dealership its not a recall item but in my opinion being able to exit the vehicle under normal circumstances or in an emergency is critical. i use more force to break a piece of celery in half than i did to break off a piece of this plastic. its only a matter of time before someone has an accident and dies because of simple handle failure. *tr

Manufacturer defect. all four door handles not operable. plastic hinges and pins all fractured. faulty plastic components. safety issue. unable to exit car from inside. failures started at 98,000 miles. cost to repair exceeds $2000.00. jeep will not cover. jeep issued no recall yet component failure is a known catastrophic failure across the model. *tr

have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the interior door panels are all cracked and handles to open the doors are beginning to break. this car is used primarily as a single passenger car, back doors are rarely used yet still are breaking. . if there is ever an accident and those doors are the only escape route, they may render the passengers trapped in the car. *tr

The front and rear passenger side door handles have broken off the door panels. the person sitting in the back seat cannot open the door on that side. i've been told it will cost over $1000 to replace the panels. based on all of the similar complaints i've heard and read about, i think there should be a recall on this problem. *tr
