Recently reported STRUCTURE problems on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The interior door handles on the 2005 jeep grand cherokee wk has all broken. most of the handles in my vehicle are still in working order, but one in particular is broken and someone sitting on that side cannot get out of the vehicle from the inside. if there is an accident they could be stuck inside the vehicle. these handles are poorly designed, and the others will likely break entirely if not used gingerly. *tr

My 2005 jeep grand cherokee has a defect that includes all of the interior door handles braking from regular use. this problem is a major safety concern as anyone inside the vehicle cannot exit the vehicle in case of an emergency. further more, children and or adults may accidentally cut themselves on the sharp broken plastic edges of the broken handle. in order to replace the handles i had to order a new door panel, yet after only 6 months the handle was broken again. this is not an issue related to my jeep only, with a little research its easy to find thousands of other people with the very same problem i am experiencing with any jeep grand cherokee from 2005-2010. *js

Approx. 2012, the casing that the inside door handle sits on cracked and broke apart; and, as a result, the door could no longer be opened from the inside because the handle was no longer secured and just hanged. i noticed approx. a year ago that the handle's casing was cracked on both the back driver and front passenger sides. since, the back driver's side has broken and the door cannot be opened from the inside. i just noticed that the driver's side is also cracked and with time it will also break and the door can no longer be opened. this is a dangerous because once the casings break it does not allow anyone to exit from the vehicle. i am in awe that the issue has not been resolved when many others have the same safety concern. this is not a matter of wear and tear because very seldom does anyone sit in my back seats. no design or defect should compromise the handle where a passenger is not able to exit a car. *tr

Interior, front, right and left door handles inoperable due to plastic mount breaking. make egress with window up impossible. our side door handle must be used to exit vehicle. *tr

The left rear door handle has broken off. i open the door to place an item in the back seat and noticed the door handle laying inside the door. the handle itself is in tack but the plastic surrounding where the handle attaches with the door was broken. there was not trauma, heavy or extensive use placed on the door (inside or out). when researching possible solutions to my problem, i became overwhelmed by how many other owners were dealing with the same problem. i called a couple of dealers and was floored by the cost to fix the situation and attempting to used a door from the junk yard is not a solution due to the problem appearing to be universal to this vehicle. my concern is that i now have a vehicle where one door can only be opened from the outside creating a safety issue. on an upside, i am thankful after reading other peoples situations that i only have one door affected, but now i am on edge and cautious that my other doors will soon follow suit. *tr

This is about my 4 door handles in my jeep they have all cracked. one on the passenger front side is almost not usuable. my warranty does not cover it, i tried to call multiple chrysler places, they can't help me. my dealership has quoated me over $2500. i just don't have that kind of money to fix doors that i have not damaged. there plastic which does not help. i've gone on several websites and i have found so many complaints with the same problem as myself. i find that this is obvisously a jeep problem. i feel they should be fixed or that jeep should issue a recall. *tr

Broken interior door handles (driver and front passenger) and cannot open the doors from inside. i found many complaints online with similar problem. i am very concerned an accident can occur and we would be trapped because the doors cannot be opened from the inside. *tr

Interior door handles break all 4 door handles had cracks in the plastic backing when i got the vehicle in 2012. first, the rear driver door handle broke and the mechanic wanted $850 to fix it since the plastic backsplash is part of the whole door panel. without the plastic backsplash, the handle does not work. so, i have to open that door from the outside for my kids. now the front passenger door handle has a hole and is almost to the point of breaking. i want to get rid of this car as i cannot afford $3300 to fix the handles. this is a safety hazard as doors must open from the inside. *tr

Both rear door handles on my grand cherokee are broken. first the left side broke in march 2012, then the right side broke a few months afterwards. all rear seated passengers inside the vehicle are unable to open the doors. the front seated passengers have to exit the vehicle and open it from the outside. this is a safety issue. the door handle issue is very common with this vehicle make and model. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that while attempting to exit the vehicle, the driver's side interior door handle fractured. also, she stated that the other three doors panels were cracked right under the handle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 126,000 and the current mileage was 135,000. *tr

The interior door handles on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee are all broken. two of them are inoperable. the cheap material used by the manufacturer should be recalled as it cracks very easily. once the inside handle is broken the door can not be opened from the inside. this is a safety concern in case of a fire or accident. the dealer says the whole door panel would have to be replaced and not just the handle, as they are attached together. the cost of each panel is approximately $700 each. *tr

2005 jeep grand cherokee... appx 2-3 yrs ago, driver side door handle separated from door panel. finally got dealer to fix under warranty. appx 3-6 mos ago, same thing happened to other 3 doors -- called chrysler customer care and told because of mileage (appx 80k) and age of vehicle... no extended warranty was forthcoming... dealer estimates $600-$900 per door. safety issue... doors can not be opened except from the outside. in event of accident, rear occupants would be unable to open doors and escape vehicle in timely manner. *tr

With the first door handle that busted, i thought i might have used too much power but as they all shattered i realized that the interior door handles are made with bad material that is brittle and can not tolerate normal wear and tear. clearly a safety hazard to be riding a vehicule, whether as the driver or passenger, and if an emergency calls for you to abandon it, as you pull the handle to open your door the handle brakes in your hand and leaves you trapped in. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the rear passenger interior door handle was cracked. as a result, the contact experienced difficulty opening the door from the interior. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the interior door panel needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 123,000.

The handles on both rear doors have cracked making them unusable. you cannot open the door from the inside, safety issue. they are made of cheap plastic that breaks off. the only person that rides in my back seat is my 84 year old mother who has very little strength in her hands. in order to replace it you have to buy the entire door panel for 500 dollars plus labor. please consider issuing a safety recall. *tr

First, the interior door handles are a hazard. all four are cracked and one broke off as my grand child open the back seat door to get out. the front passenger door interior door handle is breaking off at any time, the others are cracked. i am afraid that in an accident some of us might not make it out. they are too expensive to replace. i tried to trade in the jeep but no luck! i know there are more jeeps out there with the same problem. i hope there have been no accidents with deaths, yet ! help !!! the second, is the catalyst converter needs to be replaced again after a year, how many times has it been replaced before? i cant get that info. *tr

The interior driver door panel is broken by the interior door handle. it started as a crack in the plastic by the handle. now there is a hole in the plastic behind the handle. because of this, the door handle has to be used very carefully. the whole panel has to be replaced at a cost of over $900. i am concerned that in an emergency, i would not be able to open the door from the inside. the back seat driver side door handle is also starting to crack. i feel this is a design flaw with the jeep. *tr

The interior door panels are constructed with weak plastic causing the door handles which are molded into the plastic door panels to fail. failure of the door handles to open the doors from the interior is a safety hazard in the event of an incident (fire, accident, etc. ) that requires immediate evacuation from the vehicle. *tr

I now have 2 interior door on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee that have broken door handles. the third one has a small crack that will probably grow and become like the others. *tr

the rear right door handle broke. my truck has under 80,000 miles. *tr

All interior door panels broken. i have contacted jeep/chrysler and they say they wont fix it.

Noticed in 2010 that small piece of plastic was missing behind one door handle. this is a lightly used one person commuter vehicle. then in december 2011 all four door handles began to fail. each has missing pieces of plastic behind each handle that compromise their use. took vehicle to dealership where it was purchased new and serviced since 2006. was advised it would be $750 per door to fix as the door handles are integrated into the plastic door panel. complete failure of all four handles is imminent. we are very concerned for our safety. a brief search of the internet shows that this manufacture defect is widespread in this make and model. it is clear that both the material and design used is defective. replacement with om parts will not fix, as the problems is with the design and material. please help us get this issue fixed before someone is killed. it is a foreseeable consequence of this manufacture defect that death could result. if a consumer is involved in a car accident, and the handles fail, the consumer would be unable to get out of the car. in the event of a fire or water crash, the death of the consumer would be directly attributable to manufacture negligence. *kb

Latches/locks/linkages - the pop down did not show this category so i used other the door latches will not work due to failing inner plastic housing. all four doors are in some condition of cracking and failure. one latch will not work at all, thus the door cannot be opened from the inside of vehicle. it is a serious safety issue. there are many complaints on this issue that have been filed. chrysler should immediately recall the vehicles and properly repair them. *kb

The jeep grand cherokee interior door panels are defective . the handles are all plastic and they all break off from the door panel. this is a very unsafe problem that could cost a life if the person reaches for the handle to get out of the car and cannot. they need to make this a recall and issue parts to replace this for free for owners of the jeeps. *tr

All 4 interior door opening handles are breaking/failing. rear door totally inoperable. this is a dangerous safety issue. in an emergency situation, passengers may not be able to exit the vehicle, causing injury or death. manufacturer safety recall warranted! *tr

The interior door handles all break and crack. the handles are cheap plastic and fail after time. this is a safety hazard and chrysler should be responsible for replacing these. they do not even have the parts on hand. i have contacted local dealerships and there is a waiting list for over 400+ people a month ago who knows how long now. *tr

All of the inside door handle pockets have fallen apart, the plastic used was bad and this should be a recall due to the safety issue. i could see if one went bad, but all four, this is a major problem. from what i have seen online, it seems all types of this vehicle and year seem to have the problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated the plastic on the front driver's side interior door handle exhibited hairline cracks. in addition, the front passenger's side interior door handle was partially detached from the housing with hairline cracks within the plastic. the rear passenger's side door handle was completely fractured. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who advised the contact that the three door handles would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 149,000.

The plastic paneling near my door handles have become brittle and have broken causing my passengers to become stuck on the inside of the vehicle and unable to operate the door handle properly on exiting the vehicle. this is a safety concern as the passenger may not be able to exit the vehicle easily in case of an accident. *tr

The plastic part of the inside door panel which holds the door handle broke so i am unable to open the door from the front driver's side. i can't get out of the car without climbing over to the passenger side of the car. i believe this is a safety issue. this appears to be a common problem with this particular model/year. the passenger side is cracked as well so i expect this will break over time. *tr

3 of 4 interior door handles and panel to which they attach appear to be broken (cracked) and one is non functioning. after a google search of "jeep interior door handle", i have found hundreds of complaints. repair costs exceed $2000 dollars from the dealer. although the aesthetics of this remains annoying to owners, the real problem lies in the fact that door(s) are inoperable from the inside and could potentially "trap" people in accidents. *tr

3 of 4 the interior door knobs have broken off on this vehicle. what if i had passengers and was involved in a wreck? no one would be able to get out! i am not the only one experiencing this problem... it is all over the internet. does someone have to be killed before the company is prompted to fix this problem? a manufactures defect should be covered/fixed by the manufacturer... http://www.denlorstools.com/autoblog/2010/11/jeep-grand-cherokee-interior-door-handle-broken-recall/. *tr

Interior door handle on driver side & passenger side plastic broke making the inside handle no longer usable. *tr

The front passenger and both rear interior door handles have broken off. there is no way to exit the vehicle in case of an emergency! i have found on the internet that this is a common occurrence but i haven't found out what the company is offering for a fix. this is an obvious manufacturers defect considering that all three of them broke within days of one another. *tr

My interior driver door handle started cracking, then eventually broke and is useless. at first i thought it might have been something i did until the back passenger on the driver door did the same thing. i rarely have passengers in the back so i know its not just wear; instead, just crappy quality. when you're a die-hard jeep person you don't want to admit (especially to yourself) they would've used poor quality. unfortunately, after reading about everybody else that this has happened to, its obvious it is infact just poor quality. *tr

All 4 door handles of my 2005 jeep grand cherokee are broken. the 2 rear handles are completely broken off so the doors don't open from the inside. the 2 front handles are basically hanging by a thread. it's definitely a safety issue-if anyone, especially kids, were in the backseat they would not be able to escape during an accident. while researching the recent ignition recall, i stumbled on many, many people with the same door handle problem - i thought our car was just a lemon! the cost to fix one door is $700 and certainly not in the budget so we've had to live with it! the potential safety risk of this should be of great concern and jeep should be required to fix it!! thank you. *tr

Door panels broken on back rear doors. passenger front door is cracked. unable to open doors due to the door handle is broken. unsafe conditions. i have a child that sits in the back and this is a safety issue. *tr

All 4 interior door handles broken or cracked and about to break off completely. major safety hazard - unable to open/operate doors from the inside in case of accident or emergency. obvious manufacturer defect using very inferior design/materials. recall requested as hundreds of jeep owners are reporting the exact same issue. *tr

I own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited v8 5.7l and 3 of the 4 door handles are cracked. a couple of them have been cracked for a while, but recently another one literally just cracked open by just opening the rear door with little force. there have been numerous claims on this issue at this site http://www.denlorstools.com/autoblog/2010/11/jeep-grand-cherokee-interior-door-handle-broken-recall/. clearly i am not the first person who has had this issue. my jeep is in great condition, so this isn't an abuse issue. i am concerned that the condition the rear doors are in will soon make them non-functional. the repair for this issue is a ridiculous amount. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that all four interior door handles were fractured and passengers were unable to open the doors from the inside of the vehicle. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the defect. the failure mileage was 45,000.

I bought this jeep brand new and it is garage kept. we are older and have no young kids riding in our car. it still looks like its brand new. my 1998 jeep which i still own has 86,000 miles on it doors are perfect. my 2005 has three interior door handles that are cracked or completely broken. the back door has to be open from the outside. this is a safety matter. it's really unfortunate the amount of complaints but no recall. will it take someone getting in a firey crash or running into a pond and not being able to get out of their car? *tr

Interior door handle housings cracking and breaking. hard to open door from the inside. not covered under warranty or recall. *kb

Interior door handles have cracked and broken causing the handle to be completely unusable from the inside of the vehicle. driver has to open window and access the exterior door handle to open the door. back seat passengers are unable to get out without exterior assistance. this a safety concern as the passengers may not be able to exit the vehicle easily in case of an accident. *tr

Front drivers inside door handle came off in my hand. *kb

Rear door handle plastic around base began cracking & currently driver door hand is about to fall off. this is dangerous! this plastic surrounding the door handles began with small cracks then huge chunks fell out . this could cost a life of my grandchildren or even myself as driver. nevermind anyone owning one. this safety hazard should be an immediate safety recall! i am astounded at the numbers of jeep owners reporting same or similar incidents.i hope to hear it has been issued. *js

I purchased this vehicle in 2011, i was the second owner. the left rear plastic behind the door handle was severely cracked, at the time of purchase the dealer replaced this one and stated that it cost $500.00 per door to replace. the two of the three remaining doors had hairline cracks and were barley noticeable. in october 2011 had a passenger in the right rear seat. when they tried to get out they could not. i opened the door from the outside. thought i had the child proof locks on. there was a big chunk of plastic missing behind the door handle on this side. it did not occur to me that anything was wrong until 04/31/2012 when a large piece of plastic fell inside the door from behind the drivers door handle. then i started reading about all the problems with these doors on the internet. the door handles will fall out, because there is nothing to hold them in place. now i have 2 doors with big chunks of plastic missing and the third door is severely cracked. called chrysler, opened a case. they called offered to fix them for $500.00. they told me my vehicle was out of warranty. i told them that i had nothing to do with warranty, it was a safety issue if you could not get out of the car. they were not willing to fix it. this is a safety issue! if the vehicle caught on fire and you could not get out you would be burned alive. *tr

Interior door latch on rear drivers side door completely broke off and drivers side front door latch beginning to crack around plastic and incur same problem. this is a huge safety issue in case of accident or fire one would be trapped inside vehicle unable to exit presumably dying from injuries. this is an obvious on going problem with the jeep cherokee and i feel chrysler needs to own responsibility for this and incur the expense of all repairs. *tr

Inside door handles start to break at the plastic housing where the handle attach to. two doors are broken and unusable at the moment. passengers can't exit the vehicle which pose a big security risk. this is a common problem on jeep grand cherokee and should be fixed for free by the manufacturer. today it costs approx $3000 to fix all four doors. *tr

Interior door handles are broken off, front door cracked and driver door missing part. *kb

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the rear driver side door plastic housing fractured. as a result, the contact was unable to open the door from the inside. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was not under warranty. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 98,700.
