I bought my 2005 jeep grand cherokee in april 2010 so i have had it for 5 months. in that 5 months the driver side rear door handle has completely broken and fallen into the door, the passenger side rear door has cracked and will be completely broken soon, the passenger front door handle is just beginning to crack so the only one that really works 100% is the driver door handle. i have an extended bumper to bumper warranty that we purchased and were told the only thing it didn't cover was the dvd player...well they lied! about a month after we bought the jeep while driving the ac would shut off and everything on the dash would start to blink on and off and then suddenly stop, i took it in and all they said was we could not get it to do it again. we recently had the rear differentials repaired due to them going out, they actually covered that under the warranty. the only other issue is sometimes while stopped at a stoplight and idle the jeep will seem like it wants to die but never does. i only have 56000 miles on my car and have owned it 5 short months and have had all of these issues, my main concern is the door handles because not only can my 3 kids not get out if there is an emergency, but where the plastic has cracked it has sharp edges and they could easily cut their hands. something needs to be done before that happens! what is it going to take, an injured child????? *tr

I own a 2005 grand cherokee limited, at this time both front doors handles are broken, the rear handles start to breaking apart too. i have to open the doors front the outside witch is unsafe and dangerous in case of an accident. first one broke at 67000 miles, and the second at 71000 miles . please help. *tr

My 2005 jeep grand cherokee has broken door handles. the dealer wants $750 in order to fix the part. it is a safety concern for my children in the back seat who will not be able to get out of the car if there was an accident. this just occurred in the last month. i will fix the piece on my own dime but it seems kind of outrageous for a door handle. if not for my kids i would skip it and just suffer with the broken door handle. *tr

Interior door handles broken due to cheap plastic. in case of an emergency is a safety risk. dealer won't sell door handles but instead a entire panel for over 500 dollars and i have all 4 broken. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the door handle started to develop cracks, making it nearly impossible to exit the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who stated that all four door panels needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and did not offer any assistance. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 60,000 and the current mileage was 120,000.

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the interior door panels (all 4 doors) have cracked/crumbled around the door handles making it impossible to open the doors from the inside. this is a very dangerous safety hazard and should be addressed immediately. i have 75,000 miles on the vehicle, therefore it is not under standard warranty. the dealership said they could replace the entire panel on each door for about $500-$700 each. *tr

Interior door handle the drivers door has broken off behind the handle and the passenger front door is cracked. i feel its a safety issue as it seems to be a common complaint in which the doors become totally inoperable, mine have not gotten that far, but i am handicapped and that would complicate my situation even more. it appears to be very cheap plastic and the cost of repairing is written at $770. plus tax. *tr

My 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited interior door handle broke off like many other owners. this should not happen, all my door piece around handle broke off completely. i understand many people having same problem claim manufacture defect. jeep should take action to correct this before someone get badly hurt. *tr

3 of 4 door handles broken. stress from handle cable operations creates a crack. when the crack become a break the door becomes inoperable, and can not be opened from the inside of the 2005 jeep grand cherokee. there have been reports in edmunds car space on this problem since november 2007. this is safety issue due to the fact the doors can not be opened from the inside incase of an emergency. *tr

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited, and all of the interior door panels have cracked around the door handle release. my concern is that the poor construction or the door panels and the latch mechanism will cause occupants to be stuck inside when the door handles eventually fail. the vehicle only has 36000 miles, and is very well taken care of, and this poor quality construction is unacceptable. *tr

Latches/locks/linkages - all four interior door latches are cracked and one is inoperable. *tr

I have had my 2005 jeep grand cherokee for 3 years. one year ago, i got a crack in the plastic around the drivers side door handle. then 6 months ago, the front passenger door handle cracked. last month, the rear passenger door handle broke off while a friend was trying to exit. the door handles are slowly breaking off at the plastic around the door handle. *tr

All 4 interior door handle on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee have broken, two of which ar currently in-operable. chrysler has told me it is an isolated incident however every website i check has hundreds of complaints. *tr

Good afternoon. within the past 24 months, all 4 of my door handles (interior) have had hair line cracks that have developed into full breaks on the door handles causing safety concerns for myself and my children should we be in an emergency and be unable to get out of the car. i had purchased an extended warranty on my jeep (7 years or 70,000.00) miles and when i had taken it in to our authorized dealer, they informed me that it was not covered. i have received a quote to fix this and was informed that they need to replace the entire door panel as the handle itself is not a part in itself, which will cost over $2000.00 for parts and labor. my vehicle is in excellent shape except for this. *kb

Notice cracks on 3 door panels about 2 1/2 years then about 2 years ago all 3 panels broke in peices now its very unsafe as doors will not open from inside car 2 front doors an 1 rear door... *tr

2005 jeep grand cherokee - interior door handles broken all of the interior door handles on my vehicle have broken. apparently the only available fix is to replace the entire door panel assembly. i have solicited quotations for each panel, and the lowest offered price has been $750/panel. based upon the fact that 4 of 4 handles have broken in the same manner, i believe it sound to conclude the handle suffers from a hidden vice or defect. luckily, i live in a state that allows recovery for breach of the warranty against redhibition. however, i can only imagine the disappointment and anger for like consumers who have no recourse to address this defect. please do the right thing and persuade the manufacture to remedy via recall. *tr

The casings behind the inside door latch began to gradually deteriorate until all four door casings cracked which resulted in difficulty exiting the vehicle. three of the four handles have broken off completely, rendering the doors useless. *tr

tl*the contact owns a 2005 grand jeep cherokee. the contact stated that the door handles broke. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who refused to provide any service since there were no related recalls. the manufacturer was not contacted. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was unavailable. the failure and current mileage was 40,000.

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the interior door panels and handles to open the doors are all broken. the dealership wants $600-700 per door to replace. this is a safety defect rendering the passengers unable to open up the doors. the chrysler corp should do a recall and fix this obvious and dangerous design/manufacturing issue. as a result of the broken door panels, the door handles will not properly open up the doors for both the front and rear passenger doors. if there is ever an accident and those doors are the only escape route, they will render the passengers trapped in the car. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact attempted to exit the vehicle from the front driver side door when the door handle fractured from the door panel. in order to exit the vehicle, she had to exit through another door. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was advised to replace the entire door panel. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure recurred on each door handle in the vehicle. the vehicle was never repaired. the failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 80,000.

All four interior door handles are cracking and breaking. they have holes in them and the drivers door handle is falling off and the drivers side rear door handle is also falling off. this creates a safety issue since in the case of an emergancy small children may not be able to open the rear doors. *tt

Two of the door handles on my 2005 jeep grand cherokee have broken off and are unusable. the other two are cracking and i am fearful they will be breaking off soon. the handles and the supporting door frames are all cracking in the same location and the handles then fall off. the manufacture has been unwilling to even discuss the issue. the dealer states it is $700 per door to fix. parts to fix the door handles are unavailable for sale outside the dealerships. due to the safety issue of being unable to exit the back seat area from the inside, i am unable to allow anyone to ride in the back seats at this time. if an accident were to occur, they would be unable to exit the car from the inside. there are numerous complaints posted as well as a website where hundreds of people are stating the same exact issue with their 2005 jeep. there was not any outside circumstance that caused this defect. the dealer states it is "normal wear and tear". this is an unacceptable safety hazard. i hope you will address as a recall before someone is seriously injured because they cannot get out of the vehicle. *tr

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee that i purchased new. all of the plastic around the door handles has broken apart and now both of the rear doors cannot be opened from the inside. the front doors seem that they will be next to follow and the dealer says that the entire door panel must be replaced for an estimated cost of $485 each door. i find it very unsafe for my children to be in the back seat and not being able to bet out of the vehicle unless opened from the outside. the door handles should be addressed and i have read that there are many other reports of this happening. please help, i love my jeep. Interior door handles are defective. the plastic cracks easily which a serious safety risk, preventing passengers from exiting the vehicle using the interior handles. *js

The inside door handles do not function due to bad plastic that holds them in place and this will not allow me or my passengers to exit the vehicle incase of a fire or accident. it started out as a small crack and now they all are breaking off. *tr

All 4 plastic interior door handle brackets/inserts in 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited (4.7l) have disintegrated, making it impossible to get out of car w/o reaching outside. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the door panels and handles were fractured on all four doors. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing. the technician stated that the door panels would have to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 65,000.

When opening my doors the door handles started developing cracks and eventually cracked into several pieces and the handles are no longer attached to the door. calls and a visit to a dealer left me with the only option to replace the entire interior door at over $200. *tr

2005 jeep grand cherokee, plastic door panel and handle assembly is cracked and or broken behind where the pull handle is. jeep refuses to fix this issue without charging over 3k for parts and labor. failure on drive and passenger door @ 50k miles. handles are now just floating in door cavity. serious basic safety issue. please make them fix this via recall. *tr

2005 grand cher limited driver's door handle broke, when pulled to open door from inside. *tr

I own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee that has 4 interior door handles broken. to get out of my car i have to roll down my window, open my door and then open the rest of the doors for my 3 kids. this is a scary situation in case i am involved in an accident and there is a fire. if my jeep turns off how am i supposed to roll down the electrical window and escape out of my car. our safety is in great danger because of defective door handles that are not even forced and break off so easily. another problem i have with my jeep is that when i start it and start driving, the electrical brake system light, the engine light, the abs light and some other light turn on. after the lights turn, the speedometer will no longer work, i can't see how many miles per hour i am driving. i have to turn of the jeep, restart it and that will make the speedometer work but the engine light will not go off. in a couple of occasions i have come to make a complete stop with the vehicle and all of a sudden it will turn off dead. i have to put the vehicle in park and restart it again. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee laredo. the contact stated that all four door handles were fractured and making it difficult for passengers and the driver to exit the vehicle. the vehicle was inspected by a dealer who informed him to replace all four doors. the contact was concerned with the inability to exit the vehicle in the event of a crash. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was unavailable. the failure mileage was approximately 50,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the interior door handle fractured and she was unable to exit the vehicle. the dealer advised the contact that there were no recalls and that she would have to repair them at her own expense. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. no repairs were performed. the current mileage was 85,000. the approximate failure mileage was 55,000. the consumer stated to date, she has replaced the left rear door at a cost of $ 425. the right rear door has been inoperable since early 2009. the left front door is almost inoperable and the right front door is showing signs of breaking. the left fron door window regulator had to be replaced, updated 01/19/12

Interior door handles of the jeep grand cherokee have cracked and fallen off leaving the doors unable to open from the interior. *tr

All interior door panels are cracked around the door handles. three out of four door handles have snapped off and the very last one is hanging on by a thread. the handles seem to be attached to the actual door panel which is comprised of hard plastic. the design of the door panel and the handle being attached is bad and a safety issue if you can't exit the vehicle if your car dies and you have no power to open the windows. additionally, if you need to force the doors open from the inside due to a wreck, car on fire, panicking etc., 9x's out of ten you don't have handles and any weight or pressure to remaining handles if any while cause them to just snap off. my car smells of gas constantly and the light comes on to tell me to check the gas cap. i eventually replaced the gas cap after checking it all of the time and now the car just smells of gas and my check engine light comes on sometimes. i've had the car checked by mechanics and the jeep dealer to no resolve. the constant gas smells give me bad headaches as well as concern when i'm driving. *tr

I own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited. 3 of the 4 interior door handles are broken. the 2 in the back seat are not functional. you have to roll down the window to get out of the vehicle. you will find there are many complaints about the door handles in the 2005-2006 jeep grand cherokees. this a factory defect and should be replaced by the factory. there has been no abuse to these door handles, just regular use has caused all the broken handles. *tr

My 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited has 68k miles and 2 out of the 4 interior door handles are broken. the other 2 that aren't broken are cracked and could possibly break anytime. i am fearful that in the event that something were to happen to the battery in the vehicle during an accident, my two children in the rear seats will not be able to get out. my vehicle is 6 years old but has very little miles on it and the handles shouldn't have broken so easily. there has been no abuse to the handles at all. there is no aftermarket repairs available for this vehicle that i can find and the only remedy is to purchase new door panels. like everyone else in the usa, i don't have the money to replace something like that, that shouldn't have broken in the first place. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee laredo. the contact stated that all four door handles are broken because they were made out of plastic. the door handles displayed small cracks and eventually began to break off in pieces. the manufacturer informed the contact to take the vehicle to the dealer and request that they take pictures of the handle and send them to headquarters. she was also advised that when the photos are received someone from headquarters would contact her. no one has notified the contact within three weeks. the failure mileage was 32,000.

2005 jeep grand cherokee. all 4 interior plastic door handle mountings have cracked. the two rear handles have fallen off completely. chrysler says they are not responsible. it is a safety hazard. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the plastic surrounding the interior door handles was cracking and fracturing. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer but they were unable to diagnose the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 48,000.

2005 jeep grand cherokee limited with 3 of 4 door handles broken off. huge safety issue if vehicle involved in a crash or into water. no way to safely get all passengers out. we bought the vehicle used and was unaware of the issue and within weeks of buying the vehicle, the handles started to break and fall off. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the passenger and rear door panels were chipping around the door handle area, causing the door handles to detach from the panel. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed. the dealer advised the contact that the failure was not a factory defect and the contact would be responsible for any repairs. the manufacturer confirmed the dealers statement and advised the contact that they would not assist with repairs. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 41,000 and the current mileage was 61,000.

My jeep grand cherokee 2005 door handle broke with less than normal use. both front handle are broken. even one of the backdoor handle is broken and people rarely seat in the back. my car has only 37,900 miles. the jeep dealer wants to charge $1000.00 per handle in puerto rico. this is not normal and in my opinion could leave to people being trap in the car in case of an accident. *tr

2005 jeep grand cherokee limited automobiles have cracking and crumbling plastic surrounding the door handles. in case of fire or crash, you would not be able to open the door to get out of a deadly situation, due to cracking and crumbling plastic that was used in the door panels and hold the door handle. in many cases 2 inch large holes are next to the door handles due to plastic failure, and in some cases the entire door handle is no longer connected to plastic and is inoperable. this appears to be the result of a bad mix of plastic compounds, and/or improper pressures/temperatues in injection molding, during the original door panel manufacturing. chrysler has supplier recovery options to pay for this repair/replacement, but will not allow it unless excessive pressure is put upon them, instead pushing consumers to pay for the $2200.00 repair on their own. *tr

My 2005 jeep grand cherokee interior door handles have all broken loose from their door panels making them inoperable. i have inquired about any assistance from the manufacturer since the problem seems to have been caused by faulty material and really poor design. the answer has been negative. i am concerned that in an emergency it would be impossible to exit the vehicle if i were not able to get the windows down to use the exterior handle.i feel a recall is definitely in order since the price to replace these panels is exorbitant ( $700.00 to $800.00 each) and no assistance is being offered through the manufacturer. there are multiple cases in your file regarding this issue and a huge amount of documentation from customers on the internet!!! please help all of us rectify this dangerous situation. please don't wait until an injury or death is reported that was caused by this problem !! *tr

2005 jeep grand cherokee laredo interior door handle casings disintegrated and no longer operable, cannot exit vehicle from either rear door, and driver door also cracked and nearing complete failure. defects appeared at about the same time. vehicle is out of warranty and manufacturer not responsive even though this is a clear safety issue and apparent manufacturing defect. manufacturer quoted price is about $2,000 to make 3 doors operable. *tr

I am the owner of a 2005 jeep grand cherokee and all but one of the door handles on the inside panel have fallen out and it is just a matter of time before the other one does because it is already cracking. this is a real safety issue as if anything happens the doors cannot be opened from the inside. i have read that this is real common because of the material used to make these doors and has happened to a whole lot of people. the dealerships want like $700 a door to replace. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated the four interior door handles broke over a period of years. when the first failure occurred, the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for the front drivers side handle. the vehicle had not been repaired. in order to exit the vehicle the windows must be opened to allow access to the exterior door handle. the approximate failure mileage was 50,000. updated 09/21/11*lj updated 09/23/11

I own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. i have read over 500 complaints about the obvious manufacturer's defect associated with the interior door release systems contained in this vehicle. i must assume that "we" are waiting for a number of deaths before this evident flaw will be recalled. i am now down to one working door on my grand cherokee. other than that, my jeep is in great condition, for i am very particular about maintaining my vehicle properly. after hundreds of jeep grand cherokee owners have submitted official complaints, wouldn't it be safe to say that these complaint represent thousands, if not tens of thousands of incidents? let's face it... most vehicle owners will live with this, or pay to have it repaired, but few actually submit a written complaint. i have been quoted a price of $700 per door to have these door release systems replaced. as a single mother, i don't happen to have an extra $2,800 to pay for something that should be taken care of by the manufacturer. one day... heaven forbid... someone (hopefully not a child) will be trapped inside a jeep grand cherokee during an emergency. only then, i assume, will a recall be issued. what a shame. this particular vehicle has been on the road for six years, and complaints are rolling in. this is horrible and extremely dangerous. please investigate!!! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that all four interior door handles fractured. the manufacturer was contacted who advised the contact to have the vehicle repaired at the contacts expense. there were no recalls for the failure. the vin was unavailable. the failure mileage was 80,200.
