Took my 2002 jeep grand cherokee into dealership to fix a window. when i picked it up they had changed some part that was a recall on my heated seats. the heated seats then burned out a module and the dealership said that it was not their problem and that it would cost $200.00 per seat to fix. i couldn't believe it. obviously i now have seats that only heat on high. *tr
2002 jeep grand cherokee overland heated seat no longer works prior to it quitting, it would get very hot and have to be shut off i was advised that there was a recall & when i called the dealer they said my 2002 jeep was not inlcuded--maybe someone should look into including additional 2002 jeep cherokees-
2002 jeep grand cherokee driver's seat frame broken in front and back. original break on the front of the frame needed to be welded back on. second break is on the front and rear of the frame. need to replace entire frame. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 jeep grand cherokee limited. the driver-side heated seat was inoperable. he then removed the driver seat and noticed that a hole was burned into the cushion. his model year was excluded from recall # 06v197000 (seats:front assembly:seat heater/cooler), so he was ineligible for a free remedy. the current and failure mileages were 76,000.
My 2002 jeep grand cherokee driver's seat breaks from the frame of the vehicle. the seat was rewelded to the frame but then the rails that are attached to the vehicle broke and needed to be replaced. a jeep dealers' mechanic stated that this was a common problem with this vehicle. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 jeep grand cherokee limited. the driver side heat activated seat would become too hot when turned on the high level. also the passenger side seat heater failed. he would only be able to adjust the heater to low which he noticed no problems with to-date. he took the vehicle to the dealership and was told that failure was common for his model type.. he referenced recall 09v117000(seats:front assembly:seat heater/cooler), but the manufacturer told him that his vehicle was not included. the vehicle had not been repaired to-date. the current mileage was 67,452. the failure mileage was approximately 60,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 jeep grand cherokee. while attempting to enter the vehicle, the driver-side seat shifted out of position without intention. the vehicle was taken to a local body shop, and a mechanic concluded that the seat bracket need to be replaced. no repairs were made to the vehicle. the current and failure mileages were under 99,685.
My driver side seat on my 2002 jeep grand cherokee is sagging on one side. checking on-line this is a very common problem where chrysler designed it poorly and used substandard parts. *tr
We purchased a 2002 jeep grand cherokee laredo on 7/1/09. the driver's side front seat shifts forward and backward depending on the direction of travel, bumps in the road, etc., making it difficult to maintain full control of the vehicle. *tr
My son's 2002 jeep grand cherokee driver's seat started wobbling and then completely broke loose from the frame. he is 240 lbs and was just driving normally. over time ... the wobbling gradually got worse. the seat completely broke loose as he was accelerating after waiting for a stop light. i removed the seat to see what was wrong and saw that both brackets that are welded to the front rod that runs parallel with the front of the drivers seat were cracked and the front bolt on the door side of the drivers seat ripped right through the flimsy metal bracket on the base of the seat. this structural defect is "life threatening." he almost fell backwards into the back seat. had there been other cars coming at this intersection, he would not have been able to react. i checked the internet and saw that this seat/structural defect on jeeps goes back to 1999. how can the nhtsa and jeep/chrysler ignore this problem for years? this should be a safety recall. jeep should be held responsible for fixing this problem now. given all the blogs related to this issue ... they sure won't win in court. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 grand jeep cherokee. the driver-side heated seats burnt his legs. he took his vehicle to the dealer and was advised that his vehicle was excluded from recall # 09v117000 (seats:front assembly:seat heater/cooler). he then called the jeep manufacturer, but was not provided with any assistance. the failure mileage was 60,000. updated 01/12/10 *bf updated 01/14/10. *jb
Approximately mid january, the driver's side heated seat cushion overheated and caught fire. luckily turning off the switch extinguished the fire. however it left a couple of inch long burn mark in the leather seat cover. we had been noticing "hot spots" in the heating element, and my wife had placed a fleece hood on the seat to sit on. this also received some melting but saved her from any burns. discussion with family and friends lead to the discovery of a recall involving jeep heated seats. i contacted my local dealership and was informed that my vehicle did not fall under the recall guidelines. recall was for '03 & '04 models, i have a '02. i asked if they would cover the repairs anyway as the problem was the same, they declined. i then contacted chrysler/jeep by phone. i received the same response from a representative and the supervisor. when i asked about an appeals process they said i had just been through it by talking to the supervisor. my understanding of the '03/'04 recall is that both driver and passenger seats and seat back heating elements would be replaced due to potential failure. i am concerned that just fixing the "broken part" would leave the possibility of this occurring on the other seat also. i have not replaced this as yet. we are just not using the heated seats. i am in the process of checking on various replacement options and prices such as factory parts, replacement with aftermarket parts, etc. i wonder what options are available besides paying for this repair myself? *tr
Extreme heating of driver's side heated seat with subsequent failure. *tr
Heating elements for front heated seats burned foam in both seats. heating elements no longer function causing an expensive repair. jeep build date of february 2002. manufacturers recall f17 starts with date of manufacture of september 2002. chrysler acknowledges the problem but will not expand the recall dates. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2002 jeep grand cherokee. while driving at an unknown speed, the seat frame spontaneously failed and allowed the seat to suddenly retract backwards. the failure increased the risk of a crash. the dealer stated that the entire seat frame needed to be replaced at the cost of over $400. he is in the process of having the seats repaired. secondly, the power windows worked intermittently. the dealer replaced the window regulators. thirdly, he noticed that fluid from the heater coil leaked into the front passenger side of the vehicle. the manufacturer would not assume any responsibility for the repair because the vehicle exceeded the warranty. the failure and current mileages were 94,000.
Break in drivers seat power lift assembly. complete break in steal with additional stress fractures and splitting in lower chair frame mounting rail causing seat to disconnect from base. continued use of this vehicle could cause serious injury due to the seat surface in which the driver is located, becoming detached causing the driver to loose control of the vehicle. *tr
As the purchaser of pre-owned 2002 jeep gc limited, have experienced front seats heater elements shorting and failure. *tr
2002 jeep grand cherokee overland 10 way heated power memory seat . the original seat heater element burnt up in winter of 2006 . the mechanic who fixed the car said that there was a noticeable burn marks on the leather underside of the seat cushion. the replacement unit burnt again in 2008. i then decided against paying for the repair again. now chrysler has recalled over a 100000 jeeps for seat problem under recall j17. i am told by chrysler my 2002 is not involved in the recall. i feel if it is not, it should be. apparently they have a problem also since the original repair was only 100 dollars and when it happened the second time it was over 300 dollars. *tr
Driver's seat frame broken, 3rd time. welded twice before to repair. *tr
The seat heater in my '02 jeep grand cherkoo overland stopped working. i peeled back the leather covering to discover a wire connecting 2 heating elements had shorted out where it is pinched by a spring tension rod and significantly burnt the seat cushion and melted part of the leather. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 jeep grand cherokee. the drivers seat heating unit was repaired twice under warranty because it did not function properly. on one occasion the seats became incredibly hot. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, and a technician stated that he would have to pay $700.00 to replace the seat because the warranty expired. the manufacturer was contacted in reference to recall # 09v117000 (seats:front assembly:seat heater/cooler). since his vehicle identification number was excluded from the recall, he was ineligible for a free remedy. no repairs were made. the current mileage was 100,095. the failure mileage was approximately 65,000.
On january 3, 2007, minutes after turning on the passenger side heated seat, it got extremely hot and was unable to be sat on, it produced smoke, and a burning smell was observed. i believe this could have been a fire had it not been turned off quickly. my son was in the passenger seat and he raised his butt from the seat screaming about the heat. i immediately turned the heater off, pulled over, he jumped out of the vehicle, and we waited for some time for the seat to cool down before proceeding onward to school. i am afraid to allow anyone to sit in that seat until it is properly repaired. *jb
Heated seats get way to hot they burn your legs and then short out and burn the foam in the seat which could cause a fire. *jb
Dt*: the contact stated the passenger seat overheated. the occurrence did not cause a fire. the vehicle had not been to a service dealer. updated 12/28/2006 - the consumer vehicle was not included in the heated seat recall. the consumer feels that the 2002 models should be included because they have the same parts. *nm
Dt*: the contact stated the driver's side heated seat became so hot that it felt like the seat burned the contact's leg. initially the seat became very hot intermittently. a week prior to complete failure, the seat became extremely hot every day. the seat's heat function stopped working. the contact did not have a physical burn. there was a nhtsa recall, # 06v197000, regarding the seats: front assembly: seat heater/cooler. the vehicle was not included in the recall due to the vin. updated 11/21/06. *jb
The support frame for the drivers side seat failed at approximately 100,000 miles. it causes the car seat to shift as there are only 3 support points instead of 4. i had a mechanic attempt to fix it but that only lasted until 150,000 miles. a moderate to high impact accident may cause the entire seat to come loose thereby nullifying any safety effect a seat belt may have to save my life. *tr
After just less than 30k miles, both front seat elements started to get overly hot, then stopped working. took into dealer, found short in bottom element. vehicle was stilll under warranty, i had also bought an extended warranty. everything for that eight way powered seat was covered but the heater element. was told it would be an $800 per seat fix. i declined to have it fixed. now i find out that there is a recall for this exact issue, but that it does not cover my vin number according to both the dealer and daimlerchrysler. it just doesn't make any sense how they can get away with this after reading all the blogs from people with this same issue and the same response from chrysler. sure could use some help getting them to stand behind their product. *tr
Seconds after turning on the driver side heated seat, it got extremely hot and was unable to be sat on, it produced smoke, and a burning smell was observed. the heating element has not worked since. i believe this could have been a fire had it not been turned off quickly. *nm
Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle has a dual heating/cooling system. the passenger side was putting out cold air and the driver side heated seat did not work. the dealership determined a part in the heater needed to be replaced. *nm
2002 heated seats problem. extremely hot. had to get out of car to avoid burning my legs. seats no longer heat. i guess the elements / sensors or ? no longer work or burned themselves out. chrysler-jeep says my vehicle is not covered in the announced (on tv and radio) recall of 2003 and 2004 jeep grand cherokee suvs. i do not understand. it is the same hazard. dealer told me to wait for a recall notice. *jb
Upon acceleration, the front driver seat broke resulting in severe backward and sideways tilt & rocking. substantial corrective action was taken to keep control of vehicle. (i copied this complaint from another complainant because it is identical to mine). i had the same problem with my 1999 grand cherokee and the manufacturer replaced it under warranty after much negotiation, because the vehicle was out of warranty, calling it a safety issue. *jb
Upon accelleration, the front driver seat broke resulting in severe backward and sideways tilt & rocking. substantual corrective action was taken to keep control of vehicle.
Engine light came on my jeep i took it to the dealership and they informed me the light is from a malfunction with the gas cap seal. also the heater and a/c don't work and i had them look into it they said the main device inside the dash was malfunctioning and want to charge me over $850. also my seat heaters don;t work anymore and again they said the heating pad failed. they refuse to repair the malfunctioning parts stating it's not cover in the warranty that ended 1 and a 1/2 month ago
I have heated seat in my 2002 jeep gr.ch.lim. that has had to be disconnected, as it heats on it's own, without the power turned on. also, the a/c turns on by itself, as well. *nm
The front heated leather passenger seat of my vehicle got so hot that it seriously burned my daughter who is a paraplegic. she sustained third degree burns to her buttocks and to her foot which was resting on the seat. she has undergone multiple surgeries to include skin grafts and she has had multiple admissions to the hospital. *ak
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 jeep grand cherokee laredo. the contact stated that the driver and passenger side heated seats would overheat and burn the back of the seat occupants legs. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the vehicle did not fall under nhtsa campaign id number: 09v117000 (seats: front assembly: seat heater/cooler). the manufacturer was not contacted and the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 0 and the current mileage was 103,000.
Purchased november 2001, had two recalls for fuel system within two months, dealer told me there was previous recall fixed before i purchased. engine safety warning light has come on and stayed on several days on seven (7) separate occasions. dealer claims not to worry cannot figure out why. plus seat heater went out and had to be replaced, interior heater stopped working except defrost. i believe they are all related and is why the engine safety warning light keeps coming on. also to note--vehicle sways back and forth over small bumps, like riding a small boat in rough water. *nlm
Drivers seat broke loose from mounting and tilted back on one side. mr
