Recently reported VISIBILITY problems on 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Ventilation system failure, cannot use defrost to see out windshield when fog appears. *tr

Events leading up to failure: normal usage of vehicle cabin comfort and safety controls (air conditioning/demister) systems. failure: cabin air conditioning system now does not regulate temperature. the system cannot be made to use hot or cold air on demand. in investigating this failure, it has come to my attention that 99% of all other owners of this vehicle report experiencing a failure of the 'temperature blend control doors' within the 'a/c blend assembly'. consequences: the vehicle demister is unable to clear the front windshield of mist/fogging (effectively, depending on outside temperature). corrections: no corrections have been performed due to cost prohibitive expense to do so. the local dealerships quote a price of around $1800.00 to repair the failure, while obtaining parts and performing self-repair will cost upwards of $300.00 plus time spent. *tr

Tl*- the contact stated that whenever he drives the 2002 jeep grand cherokee with 105000 failure mileage) at night or in the morning a the windows get fogged, the defrost only worked on half of the window. one side blew out cold air, and the other side blew out hot. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, who stated that one of the bend doors failed and jammed the other ones. the dealer stated that they saw this problem often. the vehicle has not been repaired. the current mileage was 106423.*ak

The heating system in my vehicle has a part that has gone out and is 1,300 to fix when jeep knows there is a problem with the heating in the years 1999 to 2004 when the windows fog up you can only defrost one side of the vehicle the other you can't see out which could cause a crash which could be deadly. *jb

Blend air doors broken. blow cold air all the time. *tr

1)unknown, purchased as pre-owned 2)vehicle won't start right away, turn key to start then wait approx 10 seconds and try again, typically will then start, all other electrical parts would come on. on two occasions vehicle was towed because it would not start at all. entire electrical system went haywire, no gauges, power windows and locks did not work. heat/ac blower randomly works. 3)computer was replaced, starter was replaced, ignition switch was replaced. problem still exists, but much more infrequently. was advised by phil long jeep repair that there is no part available to repair blower on heat/ac unit. windows fog and freeze, no visibility. this has been an ongoing problem for many months. complete failure occurred sometime in march 2007. *tr

Blend door failure 2002 jeep grand cherokee. i have no heat on the passenger side. the passenger side of windshield forms ice, and dangerously impairing my vision, not to mention, it is cold in the vehicle cabin. shame on crysler for not fixing a known problem. *ak

(1) unknown, none (2) blend door failure: unable to defrost, visibility obstructed (3) hasn't been correct yet. *jb

Tl*- the contact stated that when driving the 2002 jeep grand at 45 mph on clear road conditions the air conditioner started to blow cold air on the passenger side. the problem occurred when he turned on the heater. also caused cold air to blow onto the windshield. the cold air blew onto the windshield that caused the windshield to freeze. the contact was unable to see out of the windshield once it froze. when he attempted to turn the heater off it continued to blow cold air as long as the engine was running. the vehicle was being inspected by the dealership. the vehicle currently had 59000 miles.*ak

I bought a 2002 jeep grand cherokee limited in december of 06. march 2nd i brought my car to a mechanic because my window would slowly go down, and then would not go up without my assistance. when the mechanic looked at the car, it was my window regulator that was the problem. i had it fixed for $328.00. *jb

Defroster and defogger not working properly. limited visibility due to foggy windows. need to have blend doors replaced. *jb

My 2002 jeep grand cherokee limited edition suv has had a significant failure in the hvac unit. the passenger side vents only blow out cold air, as if the air conditioner was on, but the temperature is set on high. the driver side vents blow out air according to the controls but the speed of the air is weak, even though the controls are set on high. *nm

Driving through another state in sub-zero temperatures, my heater immediately and without notice, stopped working in my 2002 jeep grand cherokee. i could not proceed further, as i had in the vehicle older people who would be too susceptible to the cold. i took it to a dealer who told me they have fixed over 16 of these problems with the blend doors at $1000 for the cost to fix it. *nm

Complaint # 10179028 - blend door - denso's hvac system is substandard and an expensive fix; not covered under extended warranties. *nm

I too have purchased one of the junk vehicles with it's un-usable extended warranty. my passenger side heat went out first and now all my heat is gone. i don't feel this complaint has been looked at by anyone when it is clearly a safety hazard to drive in inclement weather. all of us who have been duped by chrysler should get together and start a class action lawsuit against chrysler. i do know one thing for sure. this is the last chrysler vehicle i will ever own! *jb

My 2002 jeep grand cherokee first lost heat on the passenger side, then a few months later the drivers side heat would not work as well. i was told by my mechanic that the blend doors actuators were not working and would have to be replaced at the cost of $800-$1000. i have been told this is a very common problem. i think this should be a recall issue. please advise. *jb

Heater blend door broken. no heat at all!! kind of dangerous if you can't defrost your windows because you have no heat. this is a very common occurrence for my model jeep grand cherokee. *tr

Inability to see through the windshield due to excessive moisture on windshield and unable to clear windshield. *tr

Ventilation system does not properly work. 1/2 of system blows cold air when heat is requested of system. known and widespread issue on vehicle listed. creates safety issue as defroster does not completely and safely remove frost/fog from windshield. *nm

Tl* - the contact called regarding 2002 chrysler grand cherokee. the heater failed in the vehicle. the chrysler dealer has diagnosed the problem as the mid-case blend door unit needing to be replaced. the failure mileage was 59,000. *ak

On january 22, 2007, i heard a "cracking" noise under the dash as i started my jeep in the morning. later that morning it became apparent that it was not possible to get any heat in the cabin, nor was it possible to defrost the windshield. after trying various settings, all that can be achieved is to blow cold (ambient) air (currently 4f) out of the various vents/defroster. this does very, very little to remove frost from the windshield. additionally, the heater core has begun failing. this releases additional moisture into the cabin, causing even worse fogging (frosting this time of year). this combination of failures renders the defroster totally ineffective, and requires the dangerous act of wiping or scraping the inside of the window about every 5 minutes under normal winter conditions. i am informed that this condition is caused by the breakage of "mix doors" in the hvac system, a known defective "weak part" that is currently being replaced (at customer expense) on virtually all 1999-2004 grand cherokees with automatic climate controls. breakage of these parts can constitute a serious hazard, and should be a required recall by dc. i have had to undertake this repair myself - a huge task, as i do not have the $1800 to have the dealer repair it. *jb

Blend door failure. no heat to window defroster/defogger. unable to clear window to see out.

Air condition blowing cold air regardless of settings. loud noises during operation. failure to defrost properly. *jb

The passenger side vents blow cold. driver side vents work fine. *nm

Defroster / defogger failed to produce warm air resulting in restricted visibility. dealer had to replace the "blend doors" within the defrost / heater system. cost of repairs was $1100+. visibility: defroster/defogger system:windshield:blower. *tr

The a/c in my 2002 jeep grand cherokee is not working properly. it doesn't cool down, one side blows cool, the other hot, there is a fan noise and there is cold "condensation" smoke (?) that blows out at times. i have been told that the blend door motor needs to be replaced. i was quoted a parts price of $94.00 and approximately 5.2 hours worth of labor. *jb

Heater blend door failure, heater constantly blows cool air, vehicle only has 35,000 miles on it dealer estimate to fix $1200-$1500 dollars. *jb

$40k jeep grand cherokee limited 50k miles heater / temperature failure in responding to any settings dealer estimate for repair @$1,500.00 repair with same part as previously malfunctioned. 30 day warranty only not repaired unacceptable terms. *tr

My blend doors are broken. i receive no heat from the drivers side. i have searched every jeep forum i can find and have found this to be a very common issue, not due to usage but poor planning on the manufacturers part by using poor construction. *jb

About 3 months ag, the blower started blowing out cold air on the passenger's side. just figured out what was wrong and going to try and find the part and fix it.*ak

2202 jeep grand cherokee. had only cold air on passenger side; but still had function on driver's side. now no heat whatsoever. cannot clear windshield. estimate for repair at local garage $1500-1800. told is very common with cherokees. when will someone take responsibility for this issue? *nm

The heat in my 2002 jeep grand cherokee limited (72,500 miles) stopped distributing heat. first the heat stopped on the passenger side, then a few weeks later, the heat failed everywhere. i had to get the blender doors, actuator, heater core and evaporator replaced. the cost of the repair at a jeep dealership cost nearly $1,500. i've heard this is a common problem on this model jeep. *nm

On my 2002 jeep grand cherokee limited with only 55,000 miles, the defrost / heater does not work properly. from my limited research, it appears the blend door for the dual climate control is an issue for many jeep owners. note: does tsb 2041004 apply to this issue? *nm

no heat on passenger side in january 2007, september 2007 no air both sides, then november 2007 no heat at all from both sides. the jeep has been in and out of the dealer all year with many issues, as employee of chrysler , i love my jeep that i purchased new, just not happy with the repair work needed all the time . *tr

I own a 2002 jeep grand cherokee limited. late winter, when i needed it the most, my heat began not working only on the driver's side of the vehicle. the passenger side had plenty of heat though. i took it to the dealer and after a $1100 repair bill to repair the blend doors inside the ac system (mostly labor), it was repaired. today, again, i have no heat and now no ac too. a diagnosis now says that i have a code for "travel too large"-this is the code for the blend doors again. after an internet search, i see that there are many, many others like me who are having the same issue. this is a safety concern as in the winter, there is no way to clear the windshield with the cold air. dailmer chrysler needs to do the right thing here and stop profiting from their own defects. this should be a recall to repair all affected vehicles. *tr

2002 jeep grand cherokee ltd with dual zone cilmate control system. at 50,000 miles the passenger side heat and defroster stopped working. now in at 60,000 miles the driver side heater has also failed. per a web site it is a very common occurance with this vehical. it appears chyrsler is not taking any action to recall this saftey issue.

Started the car and one day the heater just started blowing cold air. never made any noise or anything but slowly the passenger side stopped blowing hot air then the driver side and even the windshiled. no repair has been made becuase of the cost ranging from 1,000 to 1,500 dollars. new parts need to be made free of this defect and manufacturer should cover the cost of repair to every owner in which it occurs. *nm

1) rapid fogging of front windsheild,(2) fogging of front passenger windows,(3) failure of passenger heat while still maintaining driver heat function, and (4) only cold air release on passenger side of jeep. consequently,(1) the windsheild and front windows do not defog, and (2) no heat whatsoever comes from the passenger side floor and dashboard ventilation system. to correct this problem, a "blend air door" is necessary at a cost of approximately $1,200 inclusive of 7 hours of labor. according to the certified service department at the local jeep dealer and online forums, this has become a very common problem for 2000-2004 jeep grand cherokee limiteds with duel zone ventilation systems. dealer said no recall due to no safety concern. isn't a window that can't be defrosted a safty concern? *nm

No heat on the passenger side. windshield fogged up on passenger side. defroster didn't work. greasy substance on inside windshield and windows. diagnosis: shaft on blend door broken ie. no heat. replace shaft & door. expensive. heater core had to be replaced - very expensive. had to go in through the dash for both repairs. jeep not interested in talking to us about these problems. *nm

A/c system blows cold air only due to high failure item known to daimler-chrysler. results in no defog during cold weather unless you want cold a/c blowing during the winter with sub-freezing temperatures. problem can be eliminated if you buy a jeep grande cherokee in tropical climates only.

Regarding my 2002 jeep grand cherokee ltd....only cold air blows from heater on passenger side of car...have been told this is a very common blend door failure on this model and an extremely labor intensive, expensive repair. *jb

Fourth time a window regulator has to be replaced.

I own a 2002 jeep grand cherokee limited with 51,474 miles. i purchased this as a used car on nov 30, 2006 from a reputable (?) dealer. to my mistake, we did not check out the heat. we do live in south west fla. upon needing heat to take the dew off my windshield i found i have none. my windshield and side windows do not clear on mornings that heat would help in that situation. it is extremely dangerous as you would expect. no heat comes from anywhere. the dealer checked it out and said it was a "blend air door" problem and would not be covered under a used auto purchase since we declined the extended warranty. (we took it back on dec. 12,2006 to be checked out at dealer) the dealer said it was a "common problem that costs a lot of money, usually over $1000 to replace. i then asked my own mechanic his opinion and he said he will not touch the repair because of the time, labor, and money involved in doing this when he thinks it is a dealer issue. if you do an internet search for blend air door problems you will find this a common problem for 2000-2004 jeeps. *jb

Front passenger defroster has failed causing the front window to not defrost on the passenger side. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated the front passenger side power window failed to operate, and would not roll up. the vehicle was inspected by the dealer, who determined the window regulator needed to be replaced. afterwards, the front driver side power window failed to operate. the vehicle was inspected by a dealer, who determined the window regulator needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was alerted.

Blower system blend door failure. *nm

My jeep grand cherokee's ventilation system has a fault component which causes the vents to blow all cold or all hot air. it causes my windshield to fog up uncontrollably. the repair should really be the product of a factory recall, instead, it will cost me approx $1400 to fix this problem on my own. i know this is a major failure point on these vehicles from 1999-2004. it is a major safety concern and i am willing to file a class-action suit against daimler chrysler as a result of this failure. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while depressing the automatic power window control for the front passenger side window, it failed to operate, and would not roll down. two weeks later, the front driver side window failed to operate as well in the same fashion. the dealer was alerted. updated 2/12/2007 - *nm

On october 13 2006, passenger side window stopped functioning, on december 4 2006, driver side window stopped functioning, it was a loud pop and the window stopped working and would slide down by itself. *jb

On nov. 29, 2006, purchased used 2002 jeep grand cherokee ltd. with 49,723 miles from chrysler dealer. on dec. 2, 2006, tried to use passenger heating and cooling. could get only cold air. windows would fog and be unable to clear causing visibility and safety problem in addition to heating issue. took back to dealer who refused to warranty problem and quoted $1047 to replace "blend door." took to second chrysler mechanic shop for second opinion who said it was not blend door but could not diagnose cause of problem. check internet for similar problems and posted issue on forum and resulted in following thread: http://www.topix.net/forum/autos/jeep-grand-cherokee/tserat48371icob68. this forum has 48 posting as of this date with same or similar problem with jeep grand cherokee cars and with chrysler. *jb
