Recently reported VISIBILITY problems on 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 jeep grand cherokee. the contact noticed that the heating and cooling system did not work. she called the local dealer and they instructed her to bring the vehicle in for inspection. while driving at an unknown speed to the dealer, she noticed freon rising from the instrument panel. as a result, other components of the engine and engine cooling system began to fail. the air conditioning and heater no longer worked. the dealer stated that not only had her blower motor and resister failed, but the heater core, evaporator core, actuator, and blend door (which no longer provided heat on the driver side of the vehicle) were corroded as well. the dealer further stated that the freon from the instrument panel originated from the evaporator core, indicating the presence of ethanol (toxic gas). the manufacturer has not offered any assistance and stated that the failures were due to lack of maintenance. currently, the estimated cost that the contact has spent on repairs is $2,000. the vehicle is at the dealer and has not been repaired. the failure mileage was 91,000 and current mileage was 91,350.

Heat doesn't work at all and the ventilation system creaks loudly. *tr

Climate control blend door failure - fogged up front window and nearly caused an accident. *tr

Dual climate control is broken. cold air on one side & hot air on the other side. *tr

I can't believe after reading on the internet and reading the complaints on this site about this problem that nothing has been done! i own a 2002 jeep grand cherokeellimited with dual heat zone. i recently lost heat on the passenger side. now you ask how is this a safety issue? well when you have it on defrost you have heat on the driver's side and ice cold air blowing on the passenger side. (remember that when you have the defroster on the a/c pump circulates which causes very cold air to blow) now only part of your windshield is clearing up. i live in central pa where the weather is always changing. especially in the fall and spring. this temperature change can cause the windshield to fog up rather quickly especially when it's damp and there are warm bodies in the car. this can occur when your driving down the road at any time. i work for napa auto parts and travel in 3 states. i'm a former vehicle technician and know a lot of repair shops. i was blown away at how many of theses repair shop knew exactly what the problem was and said that this is very common. they also stated that it is very time consuming and very costly to repair. most dealership stock the parts to repair this. this alone should throw up a red flag! the blend doors were designed very cheaply and we the consumer have to pay for it. anyone can see the hazard here the question is, will somebody do something before there is a death? ( there may have already been some, but nobody will ever know if the person is dead!). now you know why this should be a recall. i can tell you that not many people are aware of this website. you would have a lot more complaints on this issue if they did. *tr

Hvac unit in my jeep wj, 2002, broke. determined to be blend door and recirculation door malfunction. common problem with very expensive repair!!! *tr

No heat or defrost on passenger side.*tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the dual heat system failed and would not allow the heat to circulate. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where they advised him that the dual heating system needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. the failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

Heat failed on passenger side. *jb

I own a 2002 jeep grand cherokee limited with 84,400 miles. the events leading up to the failure of the ventilation system were (1) rapid fogging of front windshield,(2) fogging of front passenger windows,(3) failure of passenger heat while still maintaining driver heat function, and (4) only cold air release on passenger side of jeep. consequently,(1) the windshield and front windows do not defog, and (2) no heat whatsoever comes from the passenger side floor and dashboard ventilation system. to correct this problem, a "blend air door" is necessary at a cost of approximately $1,200 inclusive of 7 hours of labor. according to the certified service department at the local jeep dealer and online forums, this has become a very common problem for 2000-2004 jeep grand cherokee limiteds with duel zone ventilation systems. *tr

The heat on the passenger side of the jeep is blowing cold air in winter, even when it is set to maximum heat. the dealer told me that there is a service bulletin on the blend door and they want over $700 dollars to fix it. my question is if they know there is a problem with it from design how come they don't fix it for free and why should i pay for it when they knew they sold me a bad design. also now the ac is blowing hot air and they are telling me it is the same problem with the blend doors. this is a safety issue since in the winter i can not defrost the front windshield and have to pull over to clean the ice and fog build up from inside the window. *tr

Visibility: defroster/defogger system:windshield:blower. *tr

My climate control system only provides cold air. when the heat failed it caused a rapid fogging of the windshield since the defroster went from hot to cold. *tr

We own a 2002 jeep grand cherokee. the heating system stopped blowing hot air. when we took it in to the dealership they informed us that the blend doors were not functioning. they said this is a common problem on the jeeps and that cost to repair it would be in the neighborhood of $1200. apparently the entire dash needs to be removed and this takes 6hrs of labor to accomplish. *tr

My heat stopped working in my vehicle and i can not defrost my windows. *tr

The hvac blend doors on my 2002 jeep grand cherokee (wj) overland failed at approximately 88, 000 miles causing a loss of heat and defrost abilities. due to the construction of the vehicle it will require a trained mechanic a quoted seven hours of labor to replace a plastic part which has failed. i believe this is a safety hazard, the loss of defrost ability, that jeep manufactures have been aware of and that a recall should be issued so that these jeeps, regardless of mileage may be repaired at no cost to the current jeep owner. *tr

The heater/air conditioner began working less and less efficiently. now neither will work at all, causing my family to travel unless the weather is just right. nothing the repairs cost $1400. *tr

Heater blend door malfunction - due to wear on plastic pins dodge garage said that it caused the blower motor to overheat and melted the wires going to the blower motor. repairs will cost around 1200 dollars at the dodge garage. *tr

Ventilation system blend doors have broken, no control of airflow to the defroster. safety issue, can't defrost windshield. *tr

I have owned my 2002 jeep grand cherokee for 2 years now. overall i have loved the car but two weeks ago on the way home the driver's window just dropped into the door. thinking that was odd and a rarity we continued home. later that evening the left passenger window did the exact same thing. i decided that this wasn't a rarity but some sort of defect and turned to the internet to find out what i should do about the problem. to my dismay i find that there are lots of people that have run into the exact same problem and that it is because of a piss poor design that jeep doesn't want to fix. even more to my dismay i find that not only does jeep not want to fix the issue that want to charge $450 per window to fix it. *jb

My jeep 2000 grand cherokee suddenly will produce no heat, this is a safety concern since the windows will not defog and can create serious visibility problems. the heating system will only blow cold air, which can suddenly create condensation on the window and entirely obscure visibility. there were no events leading up to the failure, it just stopped working. upon a short bit of research, it seems to be a very common problem with jeep grand cherokee's from 2000-2004 and jeep will not acknowledge it as a manufacturing defect even though thousands upon thousands are having this same safety problem happen to them. *tr

Creaking, shattering noises coming from the passenger side of the dash. cold air coming out of vents, when it's not supposed to. dealership told me it was the blend doors that are failing. *jb

2002 jeep grand cherokee blowing cold air. i had this looked by the dealer and they said that they needed to replace hvac sub assemblies. they quoted me $1000 to have this fixed. after researching this problem online, it appears that this is a common problem for 2002 (plus other model years) jeep grand cherokees. *jb

Heat not working on driver's side of car. blower works sporadically and when it does work, cold air coming out of driver and center blowers. heat does come out passenger side. without defrost cannot drive vehicle in the cold. had to bring in for service, just got $900 estimate to replace blend door and actuator. have no choice but to pay this due to the climate i live in. this 2002 jeep grand cherokee has 71,00 miles on it. *tr

The heater does not work on my jeep, it blows cold air. i took it to a dealer and it will cost me anywhere from $1,600 to $1,800 to repair the blend doors. i see on many web sites that this is an extremely common problem. why has jeep not stood up and taken responsibility for this faulty equipment? i am a 20 year old and i do not have the income for the payment , insurance and the costly repair. *tr

Air blend doors located deep inside dashboard have failed on my car & thousands of others. this causes the drivers compartment to typically freeze during winter months. even though it is an admitted manufacturing defect, chrysler will not issue a recall because it is not deemed enough of a safety issue. since repairs are $1k or more, many people are putting off service or trying homemade remedies to fix the problem. thus going without the repair or trying to do it yourself you make the drivers compartment very unsafe. chrysler is making a huge profit off this repair and their service centers admit this. *tr

The heater in the grand cherokee i own doesn't work and will not defrost the windshield causing discomfort and a safety visibility issue. *tr

Blower motor/ visibility windshelid. *tr

No heat from the passengers side of dual climate control systems well as odd odor. would not clear the windshield of condensation. jeep dealer recommended replacing the control unit ($500 plus labor) turns out the passenger side blend door was broken and the heater had to be replaced. the whole dash had to be removed, a $1200 - $2100 dealer job. i had the system repaired for about $850 at a private repair facility. this should not have happened to a vehicle with under 70,000 mile on it. *jb

In the fall of 2007, the heat on the passenger side of 2002 jeep grand cherokee stopped working. i did some online research and this problem was so common that i easily found plenty of people with the exact same problem that were able to self-diagnose the problem using the jeeps internal computer to output the system faults. using the same method to enter the azc self-diagnostic mode, the climate control display output the system fault codes 52-54-56. since most of the consumers i've run into with this problem get that exact code, or have had the same problem diagnosed by a jeep dealership service department, i already know that it will cost anywhere from $1000+ to be repaired, the majority of it being labor as the entire instrument panel assembly has to be removed. to address this problem, daimler-chrysler released tsb 2400104 - new hvac sub-assembly replaces blend or recirc door components. each new sub-assembly consists of several individual components. the new sub-assemblies improve component reliability. it is recommended that the respective sub-assembly be installed if a blend air door(s), a recirculation door, a door link, or a sub-assembly housing requires replacement. these new parts cost less than $200 according to the bulletin, but i find it hard to believe that daimler-chrysler expects their customers to pick up the tab on a design flaw. especially a design flaw that is so labor intensive that even though the parts are less than $200, the final bill will be more than $1,000. a job so consuming that it wouldn't be wise to have it serviced by anything but a jeep service technician. not to mention some repair shops wont even take on the job due to the time and possible accountability of such a project. this is a major safety issue; not only because you lose the ability to defrost but of the effects extreme cold can have on a body too. the nhtsb needs to address this with daimler chrylser. *tr

In april 2007 the passenger power window of my 2002 jeep cherokee limited stopped working, now 5 months later my drivers power window has done the same thing. dealership says it's not a recall item...how is this possible? i see on all the blogs that this problem is rampant with 02 grand cherokees. *jb updated 09/26/07 *tr

I own a 2002 jeep grand cherokee overland edition with dual climate zones. when the heat is on, passenger side vents blow cold air. driver side vents blow warm air. in looking on jeepforum.com, it appears that this is happening to most people who own this type of vehicle. it is a known blend door issue. *tr

My passenger side heat is blowing cold air and i understand this is a common problem. it has been repaired before and i'm not going to pay anther $900 because its jeeps fault. *tr

Passenger-side a/c blend door is broken.*cn

2nd window regulator on my 2002 jeep grand cherokee within 3 mos that has stopped working. after calling several local parts stores in the area, i was told by most of them that this is a common problem with the jeep. i also learned that the part can only be purchased by jeep directly. i called jeep to find out if the part has been recalled, none available. this part alone is $300, with labor the repair is $459. my vehicle currently has 66,000 miles on it. *tr

Blend door is broken must be replaced, heater only blows cold air on driver side, front windshield defroster only blows cold air, causes poor visibility due to fogging. *tr

I purchased my 2002 jeep grand cherokee limited 2 years ago, and 6 months ago, the passenger side blend door actuator died as well as broke the blend door itself upon inspection. this is a problem as it takes removal of the entire dashboard, draining and refilling the ac system and draining and refilling the antifreeze. i spent greater than 10 hours working on the problem. this is not just an isolated incident as there are entire websites set up to help fix the problem (http://www.wjjeeps.com/hvac_sub_assembly.htm). there are numerous message boards relating this problem, and even a company who sells a metal replacement to the plastic part. *tr

Blend door mechanism broke numerous times, blower motor resistor burnt up twice.*cn

The passenger side vents on our 2002 jeep grand cherokee have started to blow warm air even with the a/c tuned to its lowest setting. *tr

We own 2 jeep gc laredos, and have had 3 window regulators fail in the last 3 months. the loud pop and the window dropping each time has almost caused crashes. while this wa s not currently a huge safety issue it was definitely a major design fault and jeep should act on it with a recall. also, like most people we had warped rotors and brake problems from the start , 3 times for the jeep and 2 times for my husband's jeep. *ak

I purchased my 02 jeep grand cherokee in 2004. in december of 2005, my heater went out. i had to replace a blend door. that was an $1,100 job. now my air conditioning have went out with the same problem. i am looking at another $900 job. i have very loud noises coming from the panel when i shut off the engine. i am also 7 months pregnant and cannot afford this. *tr

Heating sysytem problem in my 2002 jeep grand cherokee limited (no heat at all). *tr

Hvac blend doors fail causing inadequate defrosting of windshield and uncontrollable temperatures within interior of vehicle $1593.42 to repair. *jb

Passenger window motor broke. this was the third window motor to break within 2 years. *tr

The dual-zone climate control on the jeep grand cherokee overland stopped working. the 2 vents in the center of the dashboard respond to the climate control settings, and blow the appropriate temperature air. the remaining 3 vents in the dash, and 2 additional floor vents only blow air that is the temperature of the outside air. , in the summer time, 2 vents blow cold air, and the remaining 5 blow hot air. and in the winter, the opposite happens; 2 vents blow warm air, and the remaining 5 blow cold air. this was my second grand cherokee that has had this problem, and my brother's grand cherokee has also had this same exact problem. upon speaking with dealers, it seems like hundreds of trucks need to have this identical issue fixed. it was related to the blend doors, which ere part of the dual zone system. *ak

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the power windows failed to operate and all of them would roll down intermittently and without warning. the windows were pushed up manually and a piece of cardboard was stuck in between the windows and the rubber to prevent them from falling. the vehicle was not inspected by a dealer. the failure mileage was 69,000 and current mileage was 72,000. updated 01/07/08. *lj updated 12/12/07. *jb

I own a 2002 jeep gc limited, the passenger side vents only blows cold air, my mechanic had told me this is a very common and expensive problem, but that chrysler motors has not yet issued any kind of recall for this issue. he also told me that eventually the driver side will also fail, because the defective part is poorly made. *tr

Hvac system died, blend doors and recirc doors located under dash have failed, this is a common problem on this vehicle, $2000 to fix, chrysler should recall this problem as every grand cherokee experiences it. so until fixed no ventilation, notable defrost so windshield fogs up causing unsafe visibility. *tr

The heating/air conditioning system on 2002 grand cherokee was faulty. the vehicle has just over 65000 miles on it. i just had it repaired at a cost of over $1000 and it was still making noises that lead me to believe it will fail again. it wasnacceptable that a car company with as much experience as daimler chrysler could not design a quality heating / air conditioning system.*ak

As rolling up power window driver door loud pop which started me. attempted to roll back down and moved slowly so let up on control button. window slowly slid into door. *jb
