Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Cranked 2000 jeep drove 1.5 mile car just stops running doing 40 mph. insert key jeep will not start . randomly stops during operation. indicating key not recognized. mileage 122000. jeep will not run. car runs fine when in operation but then wham it just stops. can't control the jeep steering locks up. happened 6 times already. repairs shop tried of towing it. no know fix! going to get killed jeep shuts down at any time. no one knows how to repair. manufacturers defect.

No start

Dashboard lights and alarms simultaneously blink on and off. seems to be a short circuit in the wiring. gas tank levels off at "empty", and the fuel gauge spins 180 degrees so that it is caught under the "resting stick" at 0, therefore, no longer reading the gauge. this happens while in motion and while parked.

I was driving the jeep and took it to the repair shop to get the muffler fixed upon getting it to the shop the security key light came on and the jeep wont start also the key can be removed from the egnition when in the on position . the key can fall out while driving ... the recall was never fixed and the key wont work with the jeep now and im told its a $1,800 fix .

Car's instrument panel went wild w hen i started the car.every warning light came on and stayed on. gauges worked immediately after starting the car, but slowly lost power to keep them on, and they went to the "key off" position. nothing on the drivers armrest worked, no seat auto positioner, no window open, shut, or lock. information panel overhead went dead (blank).

Vehicle stalls intermittently, usually at the worst possible time. i understand that this is large problem and affects many chrysler models. forums have page after page of people with the same problem. it is the electrical connection to the pcm. connectors become loose and cause vehicle to stall randomly. it is a manufacturer issue! is someone going to have to die to get this problem resolved. i have put thousands of dollars into this vehicle and no resolution!

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 jeep grand cherokee. on several occasions, while driving, the interior lighting was inoperable and all the doors inadvertently locked. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the contact called landmark dodge chrysler jeep ram at (770) 968-4900 (6850 mt zion blvd, morrow, ga 30260) where it was confirmed that there was no recall associated with the vin. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the approximate failure mileage was 300,000.

Im not sure. all i know is that i purchase this vehicle few months ago, within the time had the vehicle i then purchased all new parts and still get the same result... please help

Engine stalls without warning while driving at any speed. all gauges including speed, rpm's, temp, fuel, etc. all stay for a few seconds after stalling and then all drop off. the jeep gc used to start up after a few seconds and was once in a while at first with this issue. then it became more often that he jeep would stall, the same thing with the dash for a few seconds the speed, rpm's, etc. would be at where it was before stalling with no power steering or power brakes while moving. very hard to steer on curves when the jeep stalls. put in a pcm, crankshaft sensor, & camshaft sensor. ase mechanic stumped on issue. very dangerous driving and reminds me of the gm ignition switch problems. and i have seen forums on the jeep grand cherokee on my year that there are a lot of problems with this. please look into this problem, because it seems like a manufacture defect.

Vehicle stalls after reaching operating temperature while negotiating traffic or driving, regardless of conditions or driving habits, at highway speeds or in a parking lot. has stalled numerous times at worst possible times. no codes. no warning: in traffic. at stop lights. pulling into gas stations. etc... extremely dangerous!!!!! date submitted is the last time it happened. it has happened at least 10 times just this year. looked on many jeep forums and seems to be a recurring problem!!! (see for yourself). please help!!!!

The right passenger and back right door won't unlock after pressing the unlock switch on the door panels. needs to be unlocked manually.

Although no accident yet, i wanted to say that i have never received any notice from fca about the "customer satisfaction campaign" (because although the gas tank hangs under the rear bumper, year 2000 was not included in the "recall" trailer hitch deal). i bought it new and am still living at the same address. i also wanted to note that another issue with the gc is that the brake and tail lights often stop working. the socket gets scorched and you have to go take it apart, pry the contacts up just right and put aluminum foil under them (google grand cherokee brake lights). that works for a while, then you have to do it again. i've been stopped twice in 6 months for it. sometimes the taillight works but actually goes out when you step on the brake. in any case, having a gas tank prone to exploding when rear ended along with brake light issues is not a good thing. the door locks on the passenger side also cannot be unlocked except from inside the vehicle, while the drivers side have to be locked manually (again, it's all over google. it's called the angry duck for the noise the locks make. i have been waiting for nhtsa to make a other announcement about this - the news was they were going to in a week or so, but that was 3 weeks ago. thanks [xxx] [xxx]@gmail.com information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).' *jb

The truck seems to have lost power to drive and also to provide proper to the radio which goes in and out. while driving there was no engine light that came on and the truck started hesitating to keep going. at 0 to 40mph it was acting like it wanted to shut off but as i gave it more gas it seemed to get better and the music came in clearer but then it would jerk like it was going to shut down. i have had the starter, alternator, engine and spark plugs changed and checked but it still is doing the same thing. this is unsafe with my kids in the car and no warning light to say that anything is wrong. this needs to be addressed i've seen too many trucks with similar issues like mines. *tr

My wife was driving in traffic and the jeep stops in traffic. it took her s couple of minutes to get it franked. as soon as she pulls off it shuts off again. really in friday traffic herd in atlanta. dangerous!! *tr

This is just the beginning of my complaints, it will take another 3 or 4 of these forms to touch all of them. while running the heater with the fan going it started smelling like it was burning and then the blower quit running. it turned out to be the blower motor resistor. it had melted to the point of fusing the wires into the plastic which the resistor was made of. it was a fire hazard! the part cost us $270.00 not including labor. in the middle of a huge rainstorm the driver side window quit working and wouldn't go up, upon leaving the dealership and having the window mechanism replaced, the airbag light on the dash started intermittently chiming and has never stopped. the dealership said the clock spring needs to be replaced at $395.00. since i had just had to have the heater core fixed to keep it from dumping all over the carpet, i couldn't afford to fix it or have the a/c compressor clutch which was frozen, replaced either, another $702.00. i have owned this jeep since jan of 2012. beginning with a new motor i have paid for this vehicle 3 times over due to repairs and problems stemming from the factory and the cheap way it was built.

I own a 2000 jeep grand cherokee and while driving it the car stop suddenly without any notice. car was unable to start again. took car to a local dealer and they said it was the memory that needed to be replaced. cost for the memory replacement $1000, 2 months later, jeep stop again without any warning. have not been able to fix it because mechanic cannot locate the problem that making the car not turn on. changed batteries, brakes, fuel pump etc. don't know what to do anymore. *tr

Blower motor resistor heated up to the point that there was smoke coming from under the passenger side glove compartment. after further investigation it was discovered that the wires and the resistor had both been charred and melted. not only do i no longer have any heat or a/c but i also no longer have a window defroster and this poses a serious safety issue to myself, any passengers i may have and as well to other drivers on the road. not to mention the fire that was only barely thwarted off.

Vehicle was noted with stop light activated in parked position. investigation showed fail brake switch adjacent to brake pedal. purchased napa replacement part . installed replacement switch did not fully seat into metal pocket on support bracket. replaced with jeep/chrysler dealer replacement switch with same condition. unit will be pushed out of metal bracket from quick release of brake pedal. concern is excessive heat generated by continual rear brake light activation. potential for fire hazard. i am faa certified for flight safety systems on aircraft. this inadequately secured switch would not be allowed for aircraft due to hazardous potential failure mode. switch design was made for quick assembly but inadequate securing to vehicle bracket support.

Have been noticing vibration of the radiator cooling fan when a/c turned on. while backing out of drive, heard pop noise from engine compartment. pulled into drive, opened hood and found that radiator fan had disintegrated, piercing radiator shroud and radiator. holes in radiator (radiator now leaking) and shroud. called chrysler recall center and told that this was not covered by recall 06v199000. am replacing all affected parts and performing service myself. based on online research this is very common problem with this model and should be included under above mentioned recall. *tr

I was driving on the freeway when my 2000 jeep grand cherokee v8 4.7l just stalled out without any warning. it took about 1 hour to start back up. then it died about five times after that. my jeep also stalls out when i'm sitting at a stop light waiting for the light to change than bomb just like that my jeep stalls out. most the time i can start it, but some times i can't start my jeep until the next day. i almost get slammed about 10 times already. i don't feel safe in the jeep.. i replaced my fuel pump, fuel filter, spark plugs, crankshaft position sensor, camshaft positions sensor, battery, battery terminals, and my oil pressure sensor. nothing has helped my stalling! nothing! i took my jeep to 2 different mechanics and they can't figure it out. i also called the jeep dealership here in albuquerque, new mexico and i talked to the techs and mechanics and they all said they never seen that before. i call bs on that. if you look on google and type 2000 jeep stall out, there's 100's even 1,000's of people dealing with the stall out problem. i don't feel safe in my jeep at all!! i don't even want my 6 year old in the jeep when i'm driving, sad thing is this is my only car!! please help investigate this problem. thanks 2000 jeep grand cherokee v8 4.7l. *tr

Several months ago, i get a quack sound when the door lock/unlock is activated. initially both locks worked then the rear passenger door doesn't lock but unlocks and the driver's passenger door doesn't unlock but locks. i did a search and found this: http://www.topix.com/forum/autos/jeep-grand-cherokee/tlmudaeofdb3ht8fc page where people are having the same issues. apparently it is a problem with my 2000 laredo that presents itself every few years after the fix. is there or was there ever a recall for this issue? *tr

Engine shuts off while driving. very dangerous to shift to neutral, while rolling, and try to restart with key. must come to a complete stop and shift to park to restart. not so bad if you can get to the side of the road first, terrible if you have to stop in the travel lanes to restart car. sometimes it takes up to 30 minutes to get vehicle started again. *tr

Initial happening driving a safe speed and car completely shuts down. was able to restart and drove to nearest station...which started a series of pcm replacements. i now understand that there are not new pcm's that can be installed. nothing but refurbished ones, so each time i'm getting someone else's problems. maybe not the original one i had but eventually another one comes up...where the car completely shuts off. my understanding is that it is a problem with the 2000 models. my real issue is that why doesn't the car manufacture offer a new pcm to install. now waiting for the next cutoff...have poured too much money into the car to sell. this the 3rd replacement and installed feb. 2015, first one may 2012 , the second one feb. 2014

Two or three times a year the left rear blinker will have to be replaced due to the housing melting the contacts and burning so it stops working. the two back doors will intermittently not unlock with the key remote (very frustrating!) the left back door window will stop going up and down and we are told by the one that repaired it that the wires for all of that is running through the drivers side door hinge from the dash and gets pinched off from being bent! the front end will growl when i make a left turn, i hear a howling from the rear end at speeds of 35 mph and up. when i come to a quick stop and make a sharp turn it sounds and feels like the rear end shifts forward an inch or two. the brakes have always grabbed and jerked like they were warped while coming to a stop. i have owned it for three years and have had to put two water pumps in it. the wiper washers have never worked. the spare tire well use to fill up with water when it rained and one day my husband put a screw in the bottom of the back license plate and it stopped filling up with water! my brand new cd magazine has stopped working and i'm guessing its because of the location of the deck itself. being right over the rear tire well the vibrations have probably wrecked havoc on the players eye. it seems as though over half of the repairs on this jeep have cost us at least $1000.00 each. i could go on for hours and i have receipts for every one of them! now i think i am seeing what looks to be a leak from the plastic gas tank. i want to know why my year of this jeep, 2000, was skipped over from the recalls?

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 jeep grand cherokee. the contact was driving 25 mph when the vehicle stalled with warning. the contact stated that when the failure occurred, he would have to wait for the computer to reboot in order to restart the vehicle. the contact took the vehicle to a local mechanic for a diagnostic test. the test did not indicate any problems. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign i.d. number 04v112000 (electrical system:starter assembly) but the vehicle was not included in the recall and was outside of the recalled year models. the failure mileage was 104,000.

I recently bought a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo and having done hours of research i am having the same problem as many other jeep owners. my alarm is faulty and often does not start, i have not been able to use vehicle in over a week. i have tried everything jeep told me to do to override alarm, it does not work. i also have a "quack" in my door locks. i suspect i will need a new actuator. i don't understand how their is not a recall on any of these things, i have read literally hundreds of complaints about the anti-theft systems in these cars and it costs alot of time, money and frustration to fix. i will never buy another jeep nor will i ever recommend a jeep. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the vehicle independently shifted out of park and into reverse. as a result, the contact's vehicle crashed into another vehicle. the air bags did not deploy. a police report was filed and there were no injuries. in addition, the vehicle stalled and was unable to restart. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the technician stated that it was unknown if the transmission or the ignition needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 78,000.

The power in doors windows works off and on. there will be no point to lock your door and then you can't unlock the door. the windows sometimes roll down and times they don't. the lighting on the inside of the car comes off and on without being turned on. happened on its own anytime the car is started and can't be turned off at times. the dash lights don't work sometimes blinkers work off and on any electrical in the inside of jeep is messed up. *jb

While driving my 2000 jeep grand cherokee, the jeep just stalls. this has happen 3 times in the last 3 months. once while on the highway. a safety problem. once it sits for awhile it will start again. *tr

Wiring under dash that runs heater getting hot melted box that contains electric wires. *tr

We have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo. we bought this car from florida in september of 2010. we had it here in ny for 2 days before the problems started. we lost all of our gauges, all of our warning lights come on, power windows dont work, power mirrors dont work, command center goes down, door locks work intermittently. chrysler jeep is very unhelpful. we have put thousands of dollars into this problem and have seen online that a lot of other people are having this same problem in the years 99-2005. it is giving us a p1686 code and no one seems to be able to figure out the problem. *tr

Heater blend doors broke no heat on drivers side, power wires frayed and plug starting to melt for heater power

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 jeep grand cherokee. while driving approximately 40 mph the vehicle suddenly stalled. the vehicle would stall at different speeds intermittently. after the vehicle stalled it may or may not restart immediately. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing and the technicians were unable to diagnose the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

Airbag warning light keeps going on in my 2000 jeep grand cherokee. *tr

I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee.. i have the same as all other 2000 jgc owners are having. been using coolant every few weeks needs to be topped off.. fan was replace due to recall. had to replace fan control under headlight. last year was overheating. replaced water pump/ thermostat. overheating again. just replaced thermostat today. did not fix the problem. transmission has been shifting hard for the past year and a half. i replaced parts in transmission as suggested by dealer. but it did not fix problem..replaced radiator around may of 09 still having cooling problems. i replaced so many sensors that have failed that i cant remember them all. i still have 1 more year of payments on this vehicle.. its hard to make payments when i have been buying so many parts to try to keep this car running. bad door seals, they are too small (short or shrinking) it lets water come in back passenger area. always smells musty inside.. black mold in the rainy season. taillight brake light on one only works part time. replaced 3 door latches. including one on rear hatch. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that when the vehicle was traveling at a rate of speed that exceeds 60 mph and the brakes were depressed, the vehicle would lose power or stall. when the vehicle stalled, the electrical system would illuminate and all of the components on the dashboard would fail. the contact would become trapped inside of the vehicle because the power door locks and windows would become inoperable. the vin was not available at the time of the complaint. the failure mileage was 119,000 and the current mileage was 121,000.

Car stalls while in traffic. dashboard gauges go hay wire. *tr

The hvac system on our 2000 jeep grand cherokee limited has broken and is unable to direct air at the proper temperature to the proper places. the defect appears to be related to electronically controlled dampers in the ductwork that have failed. this prevents our defroster from working as effectively as it should and is also an irritant to the driver when it's 110 degrees outside in the texas heat. googling the problem identifies it as a common breakage and is related to the use of cheap plastic materials in the damper mechanism. i believe this should be covered as part of a manufacturers recall campaign. *tr

Have owned vehicle for 4 years now. have had problems with the heat not working 3 times now and still have problems (spent over $1,000.00 in this alone) the wires connecting to the blow box get to hot and melt the plug & blow box. when it first starts you can wiggle the wires and it will work for a short period of time. ultimately you must replace the plug & blow box. last week i was pulled over getting off the express way and a guy stopped me and told me i had no tail lights or brake lights. again this was another electrical problem. this was very dangerous as i could have been in a serious accident. the tail gate sticks and will not open. *tr
