We have classified the 15 complaints from 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
I am an owner of a 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited v8. i have encountered many problems with this vehicle but some have already been resolved under manufacturer's warranty. a couple problems still exist though. one main problem is that my vehicle occasionally stalls out on me at red lights. it idles very slow (@400 rpm) and this is usually when the vehicle fails on me. i'll lose power to the transmission, but all the electrical items will still work, such as the radio and heater. when the engine dies out, the check engine and airbag lights will display. this problem has been brought to the attention of two dealerships but has not yet been resolved. another problem i have is that i will feel a big clunk when i am accelerating, usually when i first start to drive off. the second type of clunk i feel is when i put the vehicle in reverse to drive. i will feel a big bang like somebody had hit me from behind. this will specifically happen during the shift from reverse to drive. the third problem i encounter happens when i have my heater on. i will have the control settings set @80's and the air conditioner will operate. i do not have the setting at defrost mode. it is in regular mode and when i want the heat, the ac plus the heat will trigger. i would greatly appreciate it if these problems were looked into. thank you. *ak
On 3 different occasions vehicle jumped into reverse from park. engine was on. please add additional information. *ak
Several dealerships have not been able to resolve problem. front tires are grinding away the interior wall of the wheel wells. tire is now grinding on steel chasis and beginning to erode itself. chrysler has no solution after 6-8 visits for repair in 4 months. mechanics recommend the car not be driven until a solution can be found due to safety reasons...in the meantime i have purchased a new vehicle i can not drive and neither the dealership nor chrysler will replace the defective vehicle.( dot number: tire size: 245/70/r16 )
Vechile jumped from park to reverse when time of starting
Pe 01 021: vehicle was parked and idling, when it jumped out of gear into reverse and ran into a tree with 6 year old son in the vehicle. no injury was reported. dealer/manufacturer were not notified at this time. feel free to provide any further information on this matter.*ak
The transmission completely stalled within one month from date of lease. the transmission was overhauled; however, the transmission continued to shift roughly. the car was taken to the dealer 2 more times, in which the dealer made adjustments once. the transmission continued to shift roughly (i.e. there was jerky motion with a clunk between shifts). the car was returned to the dealer, in which the dealer indicated no problem. the problem with the transmission has worsen. currently, there is long stall before shifting.*ak
When shifting transmission gear from park to reverse there is a very loud noise and vehicle stalls. *ak
Racing when shifting from 2nd to 3rd, dealer replaced transmission, happening again + clunking sound when shifting to lower gears or stopping. *ak
Transmission makes loud clunk sound when shifting into reverse. very loud!
Transmission slams into gear when putting vcl in reverse. does not do this when putting vcl in drive or any other gear, just reverse. it is very noticeable, and even the original tech who we showed problem to at dealership admitted it sounded bad/wrong. but after we left vcl there for repair, we were told none were needed...this is "just how these vehicles are". i don't think so! have owned 4/4 suv's before, including a prior grand cherokee...and never heard anything like this. i am worried that this slamming could cause parts to loosen or break, and if that happens while vcl moving, could be disastrous! could this also cause problem of parts being just somewhat out of alignment, which could cause a strange wearing of parts that would not normally occur? *ak
Since date of purchase wipers did not function, air conditioner intermittently fails to blow air for periods up to 30-60 seconds. can occur repeatedly, with only seconds in between. overhead computer system repeatedly sounds alarms that the lift gate is open when it is closed. rear defroster comes on at its own whim, and at times will not turn off unless key is turned off. transmission was replaced. on board panic system (integrated with the keyless entry system) goes off at will, sounding the horn and flashing lights. occurs almost continually when vehicle is locked. the body control module was replaced, numerous attempts at investigating the wiring, replacing connectors and sensors have still left us with the defects. the vehicle is well known in the community because it simply cannot be silenced. we have been told that numerous other 1999 and 2000 models of grand cherokees have had similar problems, especially with respect to the transmission which has caught fire when it failed during driving (as related by a jeep dealer service department) we were lucky my husband noticed a problem before it reached the point of no return. please contact if additional information is needed, will be happy to provide whatever it necessary to begin an investigation into the plague known as the grand cherokee. *ak
When at a stop the vehicle lurches forward. when placing car into gear the car doesn't move.
Transmission slips out of gear while up-shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear (automatic).

Daimler chrysler has been aware of these problems, been on tsb software , but no recall but i have been continued to be mislead and now, i will proceed with either the lemon law or arbitration at this point. for a vehicle that cost $33,000 you would not of expected these types of problems, and when they occur chrysler should own up to its responsibilities and fix the issues, customers have been misleard in thinking there getting a reliable and dependable vehicle and with this last problem i have encounter , there needs to be some justice and compensation for what i have to pay out , but yet i continue to pay my monthly payments .no safety defect mentione din summary. *ak
Light out in transfer case so at night you cannot see what gear you are in. we were told by the service manager there was no light and it was a design flaw by jeep. however the light comes one intermittently.
When shifting from park to reverse, there is a long squealing noise. when we told dealer he said that is the way the jeep's with a v8 sound. the squealing is getting longer in duration when shifting.
Front rotors continually warp and transmission shifting defective. *ak
While making a sharp turn vehicle would shake / vibrate, causing loss of control. also, driveshaft yoke assembly failed. seeking help from nhtsa in this matters, the power train differential unit makes whine noise between 54-65 mph. *yc

The automatic transmission has an erratic hard clunk shift from 1 to 2, as well as a down shift from 3 to 2, dealer says this is normal. the vehicle pulls to the right, dealer confirmed that the left rear toe was out of spec., dealer slotted rear trailing arm mounting point, but car still pulls to the right.
Have experienced numerous quality problems including the 4 wheel drive grinding and jumping, window function problems, rear washerhose leak into rear compartment, rough transmission into reverse from park, oil gauge failure and engine clicking noise during acceleration. dealer on many occasions says they are normal for the truck to experience and not to worry. i don't believe them.
Intermittently when shifting from park to reverse vehicle will surge forward. dealer has replaced transfer case. chain inside transfer case and modulating valve. however, problem still exists.*ak *slc
At highway speeds of 40 to 65mph, i am hearing a whine comming from the undercarriage. i presume it is from the transfer case or the front drive shaft. would like to know how to resolve this problem. this is my second jeep, and could be my last if i can't resolve this problem.

Rear pinion seal leaking at first oil change -took to dealer - they changed out the whole rear end -noise again in rear -took to dealer they said now it was in the front - took to different dealer - tried to fix - took back vehicle till they could get whole new front and `rear end parts in - this has been over a month ago- while waiting in line vehicle died and restarted - few days later vehicle died three times at high speed restarted but ck engine light stayed on -towed to dealer- they said they replaced crank sensor - noticed new o2 sensor as well - still waiting on other parts - passenger side window does not work - vehicle surges at constant speeds -stick shift hard to shift from park to reverse and drive and visa versa - interior lights dont come on when remote turned on to open vehicle- engine feels and sounds rough- alarm system lights go on and off by themselves- once the dealer gets the parts in i will be taking it back for the 6th time with our new complaints. *ak
The vehicles jumps when coming to a complete stop. feels as if the vehicle is being rear ended (at a low speed from the rear). we have taken the vehicle to payton wells four or five times the their have been unable to repair the problem. please feel free to contract us if you require further information.
Vehicle lunges forward after coming to a complete stop.
I put the vehicle into park got out to spray windows heard a loud pop turned around and the vehicle was rolling backwards. i tried to jump in to stop it but was knocked over by the door and the vehicle ran over my right leg causing severe bruises and pulled muscles with a posible hairline fracture reasulting in my being on crutches and in a leg brace for 2.5 months and a knee brace for 6 weeks after that causing loss of work for 2.5 months.*ak
Automatic transmission continually slips before jumping into gear. vehicle has been at dealer's repair shop on six occasions, and problem still occurs dealer and manufacturer contacted. *ak *ml
The automatic transmission failed and had to be replaced after about 6000 miles. there is a lot of noise from the rear, sounds like it is coming from the differential or axle. it is loud enough to be heard over the radio. the front rotors appear to be warped. when braking at highway speeds, the steering wheel shudders. it does not feel safe. *ak
Rear-back window leaked,reseal failed,had to remove window and reseal, took 4 days. front differential failed causing front tires to hop during tight turns,diff replaced took 3 days. when stopped at a stop light truck lurches forward almost as if hit from behind, this happens 1 sometimes 2 times at one stoplight, engine revs also increase when this happens, dealer cannot fix. gas tank is very hard to fill the pump stops before it is full and many times gas spills all over truck and pavement causing a fire hazzard, also gas cap is very hard to remove.
When new ...front shudder-transfer case seal leaks...repair 4 times-transfer case whine and grind...dealer checked and reported no trouble found several times...finally failed after warranty at my cost of $1700 to repair-rear end repaired 4 times and problem turned out to be friction modifiers in quadra drive system-front rotors turned twice at my expense.*ak
Clunks constantly when shifting from park to reverse, goes in excess of 13mph and there is a electrical problem. i am on my third battery. it's been to 2 dealerships numerous times with the problem not being resolved, including arbitration!

Took to dealer 6 times for transmission problems. dealer told me that they don't know how to fix. was in a fender bender on 7-25-99 do to transmission hesitation and jerking. going to arbitration on 8-9-99.
After coming to a complete stop with the air conditioner off, the vehicle will lunge forward. consumer has determined the cause as the releasing of tension within the driveshaft. consumer has contacted the dealer, dealer stated normal operation . please provide any further details. *ak
Vehicle sag/hesitate, attempt to stall upon acceleration,dealer duplicated problem on test drive, but unable to fix. noted transmission fluid was also 1 quart low, unusual for new vehicle.

Whenever making right hand turns would get a clicking noise in cv joint. vehicle would cutoff without warning. speed not a factor. when in reverse, the vehicle would cut off. had been to dealer 15 times for problem & nothing was found wrong.*ak

4 wheel drive quadra-drive system exhibits grinding and severe shaking when turning right or left. has been in to dealer for service 2x since purchase on 1/11/99. service manager stated he has 3 other cars with same quadra-drive system exhibiting similar problems. chrusler service bulletin states to replace oil in transfer case with special oil with additive from chrysler. did this 1/29/99, had no effect on problem.
Vehicle was parked with engine running, emergency brake not applied. vehicle suddenly went backward, coming to a stop when it hit an iron post. damage to vehicle was $ 3000.00. *ak
