Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Consumer heard a grinding noise while driving vehicle. dealer determined rear differential had to be replaced. when leaving dealership after repair was done, consumer heard the same grinding noise. on 30 jan, 2001 front differential was replaced.*ak *yh

When vehicle was in park and was idling consumer went to exit vehicle and walked around the door. she attempted to jump back into vehicle when it started moving in reverse, and she was thrown from vehicle. she suffered bruises, and was almost run over. vehicle was stopped by running into a brick mailbox. *ak *slc

As the attorney for the client stated, the consumer put the vehicle in park and exited through the driver's side door for the purpose of fastening the seatbelt on the child. immediately after getting out of the jeep, she realized it was in reverse and was going down the incline of the driveway. she was knocked down and the front driver's side tire ran over the side of her body, including her head, the consumer does not appear to have suffered any serious permanent injury (attorney for client).

Vehicle was in park inside of a parking lot, consumer got out of vehicle for a few minutes, later the vehicle jumped out of gear, and hit a pole.*ak consumer states the accident caused damage to passenger side of the vehicle, rear bumper and side door. *yh

The consumer pulled in front of garage and put the jeep in park to open the door, when walking around it consumer noticed vehicle was rolling backwards. consumer tried to jump into vehicle to stop it. as result of that front tire rolled up consumer's leg .consumer depressed brake pedal by hand. when vehicle stopped it was on consumer's leg (between knee and pelvis). please provide further information.*ak

On two occasions the vehicle jumped from park to reverse, on one of the occasions the consumer was walking behind the running car when it jumped into reverse and backed into a brick wall causing damage to the rear right corner of the vehicle. nlm

Transmission seems to shift very rough from 2nd to 3rd. if driving at speeds around that shift window (20-30), rough kick in back end like getting hit from the rear. transmission also seems to stall the engine on sharp turns. this has happened to me at least 3 times in the last couple months. vehicle has been in to dealer for first complaint at least twice. no error codes detected in pcm either time. dealer went ahead and reloaded software, but did not solve problem. also reported problem to mfg, who recommended taking vehicle to local dealer. local dealer can't fix though. chrysler not helping with problem.*ak

Vehicle was in park and not turned off. consumer was out of vehicle at the time when it started rolling backwards down a hill, across a 2 lane street, up a hill, hit a stop sign, and stalled out. consumer was responsible of $1000 or more for repairs.*ak

Vehicle's transmission was in park and the motor was running at local service station. the vehicle shifted into reverse and traversed the parking lot running into the post causing damage to both rear quarter panels and breaking the rear window.*ak

Dt: 1999 jeep grand cherokee. the vehicle has 48,677 miles currently. at 14,754 miles they resurfaced the front brake rotors and replaced the pads, this was on october 18, 2000. then on july 15, 2002, at 28,186 miles the front brake rotors had to be replaced and the pads. on may 3, 2004 at 42,123 miles, the rotors had to be resurfaced and replace the pads. on monday, july 11, 2005 at 48,502 miles the vehicle was taken in for a lube job and the consumer asked to have the brakes checked because he felt pulsation in the brake. she was told the rotors need to be replaced again and new pads would be needed. the dealership states the brakes are not covered under the warranty because they are considered wear and tear items and only covered for 12 months or 12,000 miles. after speaking with the district service manager, she was reimbursed, $211, for the work done on may 3, 2004. according to the service department, this model is having problems with the front brake system. it is due to the fact that they are no longer made of asbestos. when she called the manufacturer, all they did was read the warranty to him. *ak there was a vibration under the vehicle, pulsation from the brakes, a leaking transfer case, rear differential leak, vibration in the front end, a slight brake pulsation, regular pulsation from the brakes, grinding sound rear end, and radiator leaking. *sc *tt

The jeep was in parked in my garage. the transmission was in the park position. the keys were in the ignition. the ignition was in the off position. it was morning. i had not driven the car that day. i got out of the car to go into the house to get my wallet. the garage is in the basement level. i went up to the second floor and heard a crash. i looked out the window and saw my car. it had rolled out of the garage, down an incline into the side of my neighbor's van. the van was totalled. the car had jumped out of park and rolled out of my garage. *ak

What a lemon! we are averaging $2000/year in repairs. power windows that stop working, water pump breaks, brake rotors need replacing before brakes wear out, leaking differential, transmission, and now we're told by dealer service department we need a new transfer case. whoever designed/built/sold this vehicle doesn't have much pride in their workmanship.

My car was in park and switched to reverse by itself. i was standing outside of the car by the open driver's door and was dragged down the driveway with the car. the car turned at a 90 degree angle as i was released and rolled over in the opposite direction. much of the skin on the left side of my back was scraped off and i had to go to the hospital. there were several other minor scrapes on my arms and legs. i also developed muscle pain in my neck and lower back and was put on muscle relaxers.*ak

Rear differential rebuilt twice, thus far. dealer indicated common problem on this vehicle. am in process of tradining vehicle in, as i don't want to experience this problem again. having to pay $5,000 for negative equity, but worth every penny. manufacturer should seriously consider recall of vehicle.*ak

The seal-axle drive shaft, gear kit center differential, gear kit ring and pinion, bearing-drive pinion, shim-drive pinion bearing, seal-drive pinion, and shim-differential bearing were all replaced.*jb

When shifting vehicle in reverse it makes a loud noise and vehicle jerks. dealership replaced tranfer case twice, and rebuiltd the driveshaft.*ak the vehicle would not start due to fuel pump failure. driver side wiper blade was worn out. rear differntial was worn, also the rotors were replaced, the fule injection was serviced cleaned the throttle body, power steering fluid was serviced,tires were rotated,pinion bearings, front axles seals replaced. *yh

On three occasions vehicle has rolled from park position while parked. also, noticed shifter could be moved without applying the brakes. dealer notified and unwilling to help in this matter: feel free to provide any further details on this on this matter.. *ak

My vehicle was parked in my garage (backed in). i started the vehicle and moved forward several feet so that i could unload something from the rear storage area. i believed that i had shifted into "park" and exited the vehicle. vehicle then began moving in reverse, stopping when it struck some cabinets at the rear of the garage. rear liftgate bent and caused the rear glass to shatter. although i was fairly sure i had shifted into "park" i assumed responsibility and did not report the incident except to my insurance company.*ak

Put the vehicle in park and got out, the motor was still running and the driver door was open, after walking several step, heard the engine revving up and the car started moving backwards, the vehicle had shiffed from park to reverse.

When using cruise control and driving uphill, vehicle will downshift to first gear, causing driver to be thrown forward. dealer stated this was a known problem, and chrysler did not have a remedy. *ak *slc

Pe 01 021/inadvertent rollaway in reverse: while parked and idling in a bank drive, and while consumer was getting out of vehicle to pick up some paper with the door still open, vehicle suddenly shifted out of gear into reverse. door struck one of the metal poles and damaged driver's door. *ak *slc

Jeep lemon!!! terrible vehicle, terrible company!! this vehicle should be recalled immediately for these two issues, among others! i have almost rearended someone, by lookingback to see if i was rear ended due to the hard shift. the brakes shake so much under braking that i did rear end someone, however there was no noticable damage to either vehicle. *ak

This vehicle has had a clunking noise in the transmission ever since i purchased it. in that time the dealership has said the noise was caused by the ring and pinion which has been replaced. it has been diagnosed as the transfer case chain being bad which was replaced. it has been diagnosed as the rear gears being bad which were replaced. it has been a "tsb" which was a ball and transmission plate valve which were replaced. they also replaced the transfer case as it was bad. lastly, they removed and reconditioned the transmission. none of these have corrected my car. however, now that it is out of warranty they tell me for approx. $3000 they will replace the rear end as it is bad.

While idling in park vehicle jumped into drive, causing a collision which resulted in minor injuries to owner.*ak

I drove the vehicle to the end of the driveway, placed it in park and got out to check the mail. while at the mailbox, i realized the car was in reverse backing up the driveway. it hit my fence causing extensive damage to the fence as well as the vehicle. i never gave it much thought as to who was at fault. i was the only one there. after hearing of the problem with this car, i am convinced that i too, have experienced the car jumping into reverse from park.*ak

Vehicle would vibrate severely when applying brakes at 35-40 mph, and more severely at higher speeds. vehicle has been to the dealer on eleven occasions, and the problem has reoccurring. *ak the engine makes noise. there was a clunk noise from drive line to reverse. the vehicle would not hold in park. consumer stated that both inner and outer tie rod failed and were replaced. while driving at 85 mph the vehicle makes a growling noise. transmission makes clunking noise when putting in gear. the steering wheel vibrates while going over pumps due to front brake rotors failure, also the steering shock was replaced. *yh

First, brake related problems: mileage 2341 complaint pulsatting when stopping 20-55 mph , front brake rotors were resurfaced , complaint 2 mileage 16040 brakes pulsatting when stopping also shimmy in steering 45-55 mph, front brake rotors were replaced reason warpage due to overheating design flaw? / complaint 3 mileage 17000, brakes pulsatting , vibaration in vehicle and steering wheel shimmy when brake are applied. have not rportedto dealer at this time will schedule for week of 07/16/01. secondly, transmission shift problems: started when vehicle was brand new when stopping it felt like someone was hitting you in the rear end. first repair ,mileage 4428 consisted of tsb0300799 and replacement of rear driveshaft,also rear axle carrier and pinion bearings were replaced.second transmission repair mileage 10453 due to harsh shiffting @ 20 mph and again when stopping it felt like someone ran into the rear of the vehicle, this time the transmission yoke was replaced and another transmission update per tsb21-09-00,also during this service the front driveshaft was replaced due to a howling noise which started around 55-60 mph, complaint three mileage 10818 vehicle still has whining noise coming from drive train. in addittion, transmission problems continue with harsh shifting at times at 20 mph and 50-55mph,these shift points worsen as other problems were being corrected,dealer claims that thhis is adaptive memory and their nothing that will be done to correct it. according to casey jeep service manager daimlerchrysler does not see this as a problem only an issue. fourth complaint mileage 16040 transmission continues to shift hard at times @ 20 mph and 50-55 mph. at this time dealer show no concern in correcting this problem . in summary, brake and drive train problems with this vehicle starting at 2341 miles, and they continue be on-going. i now question the safety of this vehicle.

Vehicle dies for no apparent reason. have been told it will continue to happen even after it was in the shop for this problem. transmission jerks when shifting in low speeds.this happens on a daily basis. service techs at dealership have no answers for this problem. i get the feeling i will just have to live with it dying and jerking as long as i own the jeep. this vehicle should have stayed on the drawing board just a little longer i think. *ak

The vehicle has now had four (4) rear ring gear and pinions, four(4) sets of rear bearings, one rear yoke, two (2) sets of front ring gear and pinions, two(2) sets of bearings, one front yoke, one front drive shaft replaced since it came from the factory. it has never been in four wheel drive or driven off road. it has had one tire replaced due to vibration that would not balance (r.front), the electric windows have been repaired two (2) times and the transmission will not engage if the vehicle sits for 3 days or longer (has not been repaired). the dealer has been very good about doing all repairs (can not duplicate transmission problem). we are concerned about the number of times the ring gear and pinions and all bearings have been replaced and the potential safety issue regarding a possible axle comming out while driving. also not sure if this qualifies for a "lemon law".*ak
